The hunt for the missing R2-D2 Droid 2 plans came to an end yesterday and today after the last 2 sections were unlocked. You can now head over to droiddoes.com/r2d2 and check out all of the exclusive content this special edition D2 has to offer. Well, some of it you’ve already seen from us like the live wallpapers, static wallpapers, and boot animation, but there are still a few hidden gems that might surprise you.
Verizon made the R2-D2 Droid 2 official today a set its price tag at $249 on 2-year contract after $100 mail in rebate. No mention of full retail price, but we’re thinking $649 assuming they’ll even let you buy one at full retail. As we all know, the special edition Star Wars device comes out on September 30th, with some stores opening at midnight on the 29th to get the release party going.
Oh, they also plan on releasing a special edition Empires Strikes Back app, but no date was given.
We finally got our hands on the R2-D2 Droid 2 launch party store list! For those of you hoping to be part of Droid 2 history by owning this special edition device, here is your chance to dress up and get down with a jawa. Some stores are planning huge events which start at midnight, while others I’m told, like the downtown Portland store, will open at 6AM.
And apparently you can snag a free R2-D2 t-shirt and poster just by purchasing any Droid phone on the 30th.
A little number of the special edition R2-D2 Droid 2 will be released in stores on September 30th, but the dummy phones are already appearing. As you can see in the shot above, we are also expecting custom packaging to go along with this one of a kind device. It’s such a tempting little toy isn’t it? (more…)
Verizon stores are starting to prepare for the September 30th launch of the special edition R2-D2 Droid 2, some with full on midnight costume parties. The device will go on sale 9/30 (pricing to be determined), but around 100 stores have been given the opportunity to open late on the 29th to bring in crowds and create buzz around this one of a kind device. As you can see from the photo above, we’re starting to see stores in early preparation.
Supply will be limited and we heard a couple of months ago that only 50,000 special edition models were made, so these could fly off of store shelves pretty quickly, especially knowing how the Star Wars crowd loves collectibles. Oh and on that front, apparently it is possible to purchase the device and activate it without removing it from the box or packaging. So for those of you looking to stash it away unopened hoping it’ll be worth gajillions in 20 years, you are in luck!
And anyone wanting to buy 15 to sell on eBay, you are out of luck. Verizon is going to do their best to limit each customer to two phones.
We’re digging to find a listing of stores opening at midnight.
Check out his post acknowledging the amazing group of people working so hard on this R2-D2 secret plans hunt here. As we posted earlier, Dan unlocked the boot animation through a process I’m not sure I can even begin to explain. Amazing work.
More R2-D2 Droid 2 secrets have been unlocked and the latest might look strikingly familiar to a lot of you. The official boot animation can now be seen at the droiddoes.com/r2d2 page, but you have all seen it already due to a leak last week. Unfortunately though, Motorola keeps requesting that links be taken down so it can no longer be downloaded at this time. Actually, good luck finding any of the leaked live wallpapers either or anything else to come out from this device. (I’ll reserve further comment on the situation.)
Update: DL Forum member danruawas the winner! Congrats on the win Dan! Check out his post thanking all of the hardwork and group effort put in by the community here. And the official announcement tweet from @DroidLanding!
On a related note, the new custom lock screen is viewable and pictured above. Nice touch throwing in the Rebel symbol, right? You have to admit that the creators of this device did a great job of adding in little details here and there to make it pretty special. Geek or not, you’ve got to respect the work put in.
Another day, another leak from the special edition R2-D2 Droid 2. Can we drag out the releases of these any longer? Should we expect widgets tomorrow? I will say that the Boba Fett paper up above is pretty much 100% amazing though. There are 14 in all, I’ve highlighted a few in the gallery after the jump.
