Video: Quick Look at the New Gmail for Android App

Today, users are finally able to get their hands on the all new Gmail for Android application. There are a few new things, so we figured it would be appropriate to go over those in a short hands-on video. Folks will notice the shiny new navigation bar on the left-hand side, allowing for quick access to your various labels and other accounts, among a few other little things. It’s not the craziest re-design or anything, but it is better than what it was.

If you have not been prompted to download the update through Google Play, you can find a link to download the new version right here.

  • Aex

Nice S4 bro. got the same one

  • hat

the trash can does not appear in the new app……please help??

    • Dan Perlman

Two options it turns out – Delete is in the pull down menu at the upper right now, or, you can go into Settings and change the default “Show Archive only” to “Show Archive & Delete” and you get back the trashcan.

  • Dan Perlman

I can’t figure out what possible use the new “Recent Labels” section provides – just because you stuck something with a label recently doesn’t mean you want to jump right into that label to see what else is there. Unfortunately, it’s currently non optional and non movable. Thankfully the new letter boxes can be turned off, as it’s not only pretty useless, but means that each message takes up more vertical screen space, so you get fewer emails on the screen.

    • Dan Perlman

Oops, sorry – should have researched the last bit – you can re-enable the delete button in the settings under the Archive configuration.

  • mrjayviper

only downside (albeit a small one) I can see is that the delete button is not front and center like the previous versions.

    • steveP

This is a setting you can fix under general settings in the app.

      • mrjayviper

Never knew there’s settings option. Hehe thanks

  • 213ninja

I don’t know anyone who has this yet…..

  • Ztw1217
  • Ian Smith

why do you have to use that weird voice when describing something?

  • C-Law

Why did they move the trash can!?!? Ahh! It’s so annoying. Now I have to push menu to get there. Why do they not want you easily deleting ur stuff?

    • umbrellacorp

Seriously. I feel the same way. I hate the new app and miss the trash can and other icons at the bottom of the screen.

    • tallevan

Soooooo annoying. I delete about half my emails the moment I get them. The new app makes me go all the way to the bottom of the screen for the menu, then back to the top for “Delete”. Very inefficient!

  • I do not think this video just once.

  • Drummer62

Anyone else notice on their Galaxy S4 on Verizon that Gmail no longer shows up on Dashclock widget? I cannot for the life of me get it to show again. I also noticed on GS4 that Lightflow accessibility cannot be used and also have the air gesture, motion gesture accessibility at same time, seems to be one or the other. Am I missing something? Anyone else notice these things or possibly have a fix for me?

  • enigmaco

I updated mine and it isn’t giving me the option, actually is auto-updated by itself didn’t have the option uninstalled it and re-installed it and still nothing using it on a nexus 4.

  • Steve

an apk link would be nice

  • duke69111

I wish they would let us turn off conversation view in the app.

  • Tony Byatt

Isn’t there an “empty trash” option available now?

  • LiiIiikEaBau5

    I LOVE IT!

  • SkylaC90

loving the new gmail app, but one thing has always bugged me. why isn’t there an option to swipe left to archive and right to delete? (or vise versa) it would be nice to have the option instead of being forced to pick one or the other.

    • Daniel McKenzie J.

I think apple has patents on swiping to delete.

      • Kie

You can set swipe to delete or swipe to archive, it just can’t do both. The setting is general settings->archve & delete actions->delete only to turn on swipe to delete. This will also change the expanded gmail notification to give the option to delete instead of archive

        • Andrew

Thanks, I’ve been trying to figure out how to get my swipe to delete back…..not intuitive….feels like this new app was made with zero user feedback…..

      • SkylaC90

tch apple has patents on many things they didn’t invent or don’t own that are latter usually invalidated. you can change the settings in the gmail app to swipe to delete, swipe to archive, or swipe to archive and delete however if it’s not on swipe to delete then it’ll just archive. The gmail app can’t do both atm even though it says it can… that’s just annoying and uncool

      • EC8CH

        wiping ones a$$…

        now owned by apple.

    • Andrew

So obvious…..I agree. Seems like ppl at Google are going the Apple way of not getting any user feedback for updates?

  • Neomastermind

All your emails are belong to us.

  • Adrian Sciutto

The first letter of your name icons in the new gmail is something Google has been using in the shared Google Docs for a few weeks now (not for google Apps users however). When in Google Docs (or Drive) and in a document that is shared and is currently being viewed by another user, the same icon with the letter of their first name is found on the top right of that document as well.

  • gbenj

Starting to wonder if Droid-Life has made a commitment not to post links to leaked .APKs. I don’t know if the subject has been previously covered, but I’m used to seeing links to where the stuff is hosted other than the comments or on other blogs.

    • T4rd

Probably because the links break quickly sometimes and they don’t want broken links in the article.

      • gbenj

I understand why they’d do it. Could also be that if they want more respect as a legitimate news site, they might not want to be hosting .apks pulled from user’s devices without any verification, but whichever the reason is, was just wondering if there was a stated one from the site runners.

  • 213ninja

“If you have not been prompted to download the update through Google Play, you can find a link to download the new version right here.”

FALSE. That link goes to the Gmail app in the Play Store and if you ain’t a so called “lucky one”, you’re beat.

  • T4rd

On camera, it looks like the GS4’s motion sensor is a notification light and it’s freaking out, hah.

    • Kyle

      Noticed that as well….

    • n900mixalot

It has a strange way of lighting up on my Note II. Kind of eerie.

      • T4rd

Oh yeah, I’ve noticed that on my Note 2 too actually. It must be the light sensor then. I have no idea why or how it would give off light though. I don’t remember what situations it lights up it, just seems to do it randomly.. it is kind of eerie.

        • akazerotime

It’s actually how the eye-tracking works on the S4 when it’s enabled. The Note 2 also tracks motion and i thought had the same eye-tracking software enhancement. I knew it shows up in video but didn’t think you could see it happen. Odd.

          • cjlee89

If you use your phone camera app and point your IR remote (TV, bluray, receiver, etc) at it while pressing a function on the remote, you can see the IR diodes light up. Maybe same sort of technology?

Side note: This is a good way to see if a remote is still working.

  • They broke “multi-select”. You used to be able to hold down on a message to select it, then just click on other messages to add those to the selection and then delete or archive them all at once. Now you have to click and hold on each one of them. Just clicking on a message, even when in “multi-select” mode, just opens the message.

    • Seth Merritt

you have to only click on the contact icon, not the text area.

    • Greyhame

Not if you just press the photo or letter at the left.

    • Michael Forte

Actually all you have to do is tap on the left side of the messages where the letters are to select messages.

    • Bigwavedave25

OR… If you do not have the category labels active on your gmail account (no letters or icons are present), long pressing to multi-select will still work. Ok, that should cover it. 🙂

  • shelderman

It looks like you didn’t enable the new categories(promotions, social, etc)

    • EC8CH

      tim don’t want that junk.

      • shelderman

Since that’s the biggest new feature, it might be good to show it in the video. 😉

        • EC8CH

Yeah I know, I’m just joking cause he ranted about it on the DL show.

It’s like people who still leave negative comments about gmail in the play store cause it doesn’t pinch to zoom. Funny google makes you enable these new features in the settings instead of defaulting them on.

    • When you do turn on the new categories, be sure you update your Apex Notifier (or related for Nova, etc.) to monitor the new labels. The generic “Inbox” label is gone, and so you’ll lose your overlays once you turn on the categories…

    • jeff manning

How do you turn it on.?

      • shelderman

You have to go to the web to turn it on. Setting and then Turn on Inbox I think it is.

  • There’s also swipe down to refresh!

    • Yes, that is there. For some reason I totally spaced it and didn’t show it off! It’s true, I’m an idiot.

      • EC8CH

        MKBHD should produce DL videos.

        • T4rd

Hellz yeah, someone needs to get MKB a jerb! He could easily work at the Verge or maybe go breath some more life into Engadget.

          • EC8CH

While I do read the Verge, those guys come off as asshats sometimes. I think MKBHD deserves better company.

          • T4rd

Hah, yeah, esp. David Pierce (I think?). He’s so fidgety and critical in his reviews (esp. his GS4 review, I hated it), it annoys me. I like Josh Topolski and Chris Zeigler though.

          • n900mixalot

They really do … but he does too, sometimes. I think he’d fit in w/ Das Verge. Droid Life is kind of nitty-gritty grass roots, hands dirty. Not posh NYC tech elitism.

          • Jimneezy

He cant work at Engadget, he’s not biased to Apple products

      • Tyler Casilio

        No your not lol

      • michael arazan

Thank you for the post Big Timato

    • Given that it supports push notifications, it seems like they could have just made refresh a menu option rather than a pull down. I hate accidentally triggering a gratuitous refresh just because I scrolled too far…

    • Kane Desousa

  • Hothfox

I wish they’d come up with a better implementation for contact avatars for senders not in your contacts with their own personal picture, or has their own picture via G+

  • Guest

If that “personal” email address is real, you defeated the point of having a fake one.

    • Hothfox

Only a total asshat or very thorough spammer is going to take the time to abuse that. They’ll probably get sent to his spam anyway.

  • Greyhame

Swipe down to refresh.. great addition.

    • Greyhame

Category labels are new as well. Enable them by configuring your inbox using the gear setting button in a browser. Adds Social, Promotions, Updates, and Forums and automagically filters emails into those categories. Sweeeeet.

  • Guest

Are you sure you wanted to leave your personal email visible in the video?
