XOOM Android 4.0.4 Update Rolling Out to All, Trick to Force It Early

The Android 4.0.4 (iMM76L) update for the Motorola XOOM 4G on Verizon is rolling out to all owners this very minute. Earlier in the week it was arriving for testers, but according to the flood of emails in our inbox, everyone should be in the money.

If you have not received it, the same trick that we used to force it onto the Galaxy Nexus apparently works on the XOOM as well. Instructions below.

1.  From your tablet, head into Settings>Apps>All.
2.  Search for  Google Services Framework.
3.  Once found, tap on it and choose “Force stop.”
4.  Then choose “Clear data.”
5.  Back out of Apps to your About page in Settings and check for the System update.

If you are unable to force it, you can always manually update it using our instructions here.

Cheers John, Dean, Brian and everyone else!

Just got my update, so excited to try it out.

I’m happy with this update. I had Team EOS’ v1 version of ICS which ran very well, but this build seems a bit snappier. Now awaiting ICS for the Droid Razr.

I am using Xoom 3G (MZ601) ICS update for this is in air or not? I can find Xoom 4G every where but not Xoom 3G. Doest it work for MZ601 as well?

I’m running a xoom 3g non-activated and the update came through today.

does this trick work on MZ601 model?

I had about giving up on the Verizon Xoom, apps fc like crazy, slow etc. But now since the update it’s like having a new tablet. Loving it so far!

Does anyone know if the family edition xoom will get the same update?

  • akazerotime

According to a email, says it should also install on the non-upgraded XOOMs. Not sure why anyone would have left it as a 3G device..

Easier trick: go in and change your date/time to set manually and move it forward a day. Then switch it back to the right day and hit auto again and check. Changing the date and time manually causes it to search for updates like it would normally on a new day.

Few of hints for those getting the upgrade.

NetFlix and Kindle need to be uninstalled and re-installed or they will lock up when you try to use them. CoPilot 8 locks up. You need to upgrade to CoPilot Standard or premium which are both paid upgrades unfortunately, but with off-line maps coming to Google maps soon, and TomTom coming to Android, you may not want to bother (I personally think the UI of CoPilot is great, but the maps and routing algorithms suck compared to Garmin Navigon. YMMV).

Backspace key on Swiftkey Tablet X and the Beta version, and on Swype occasionally copies the last several characters or word instead of acting as a backspace. Switching to the standard keyboard, finishing the backspace action and switching back usually solves it for a while. Seems to only happen to me on web forums, but not other apps.

When docking it will now start the clock, or give you a choice window if you have other dockable apps. If you don’t like this, the free “Dock NoOp” app on the Play store works fine.

Rolled in by itself on mine, installed and working ok. Still not smooth, and still as jittery as Honeycomb so I guess for me it’s the device and not the os. Camera is nice though, got the pano ability. Still nicer than before but I wish the whole thing was as smooth as my nexus. Upgrades rock either way, so it’s a good day.

This time I was one of the lucky ones, I received the update the day it came out.

Been using it since Monday as well. Really happy with how smooth it runs, just wish we had the launch bar. Bad marketing on Verizon’s part there!

  • Ricky

    I got mine.

Looks like everyone will be on ICS soon. Actually I’m surprised after 6 months that more don’t have it.

  • mbaldwin85

Got it at 6am EST. Well at least that was when I checked it and it was there. I’ll be playing with it when I get home from work.
