Motorola Releases Initial Ice Cream Sandwich Update Timeline – DROID RAZR, RAZR MAXX, Bionic, and DROID 4 Still Being Evaluated

by: | posted 02.15.12 | News

Motorola updated their timeline for device updates this morning, finally revealing their plans to push Ice Cream Sandwich. So far, the list is not going to excite any of you. As far as U.S. devices go, none of them on Verizon have specific details and are currently “in evaluation.” You will see that the Atrix, Atrix 2 and Photon 4G will all receive Android 4.0 in Q3, but the RAZR, RAZR MAXX, Bionic, DROID 4 and almost any other device tied to Big Red has not been given an expected rollout date. In fact, those non-VZW phones are all in development while the ones you all care about are still in the “planning” phase.

Why is that? Tough to tell. We were all hoping that the RAZRs and the Bionic would see this major update first since they were released just before Ice Cream Sandwich went live. Q3 though for many of these? Seems so far away. Then again, Moto did provide an outlook into how they update phones which we calculated to be about 6 months. I guess that would put us right around the end of Q2 or early Q3. Someone figure out why the Atrix series and the Photon would be up first ahead of the DROID brand. Carrier, maybe?

Hoping to know more very soon.

GSM Unlocked Motorola XOOM 32GB, $450 On Ebay’s One Day Deals

by: | posted 02.10.12 | Deals, News

For one day only folks can grab an unlocked GSM Motorola XOOM 32GB for $449.99. It won’t be able to work on Verizon’s network, at all, but you could throw in an AT&T or T-Mobile SIM and have a good time that way. It may be GSM, but it’s still a completely unlocked bootloader Android tablet that will be able to run the newest software at least until OS requirements render it useless. Sound like a good deal?

DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX Updates Actually Rolling Out Today, XOOM LTE Too

by: | posted 02.09.12 | News

A few reports would have led you to believe that the 6.12.73 updates for the RAZR and RAZR MAXX were rolling out a couple of days ago, but that wasn’t the mass push to all users. That was for soak test members and a few lucky devices that happened to gain access to it early. The update for all RAZR and RAZR MAXX owners actually started rolling out last night and this morning. So if you haven’t pulled it yet, head into Settings>About phone>System updates and it should be available. Here is the full changelog from Verizon.

In related news,  the XOOM LTE on Verizon is expecting a minor update at any moment. In fact, a couple of our readers have already received it as Android 3.2.6 build HLK75H. It’s minor and has to do with international travel and data connectivity. It is not Ice Cream Sandwich.

Motorola Failed to Fully Wipe Batch of Refurbished XOOMs in 2011, User Data Potentially in the Wild

by: | posted 02.03.12 | News

If you purchased and then returned a Motorola XOOM WiFi any time between March and October of 2011, there is a chance that your unit was not fully refurbished properly and then sold again between October and December 2011 on Woot.com. That means that some of your personal information including pictures, documents, usernames or passwords could have been left on your returned device and then sold again to someone as a refurbished unit.

Motorola released a statement moments ago to address the situation. They are offering potentially affected customers a free 2-year Experian ProtectMyID Alert subscription just to be safe. So if you returned a WiFi XOOM to Amazon.com, Best Buy, BJ’s Wholesale, eBay, Office Max, Radio Shack, Sam’s Club, or Staples during that March to October stretch, you will need to contact Experian to get setup with this service.

Reminder: Running Out of Time to Upgrade Your Verizon XOOM to LTE

by: | posted 02.01.12 | News

Last minute reminder emails have been sent – it’s time to get your XOOM 3G from Verizon upgraded to 4G LTE for free. After months of delays, owners of the world’s first Honeycomb tablet were given the option to upgrade their tablets and also receive a free docking station at the end of September. We know that not many of you actually purchased this device and instead went for the cheaper WiFi version, but we wouldn’t want those that did to get left behind.

Verizon gave us a 6-month time frame to utilize this free upgrade service. Being February, you have around 2 months left to take advantage.

Our buddy Pete Alfonso has released an Ice Cream Sandwich build for Motorola XOOM owners on Verizon’s network. The WiFi version of the XOOM receives update love straight from Google and Moto, but with this Ice Cream Sandwich update having to go through Verizon, it tends to make the process a bit longer. For all of our friends who are impatient, you can grab the download link just below and enjoy ICS today!

Motorola XOOM Ice Cream Sandwich Update Changelog [IML77]

by: | posted 01.18.12 | News

Motorola was kind enough to release the official changelog for the XOOM WiFi’s Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.3) update this afternoon. The push started last night for many, although according to our own Tato, not everyone is able to pull it.

The update itself is, well, ICS. Once you read the changelog below, you will understand that this is as stock as it gets, which is a good thing. The updated browser, swiping of notifications and tasks, new People/Gallery/Camera apps, and improved typing and spell-checking are all included.

Full details after the break.
