DROID Bionic 5.9.902 Update Rolling Out to Testers, Here is the Changelog

The mysterious 5.9.901 update for the DROID Bionic that popped up only a week or so after the officially massive bug fixer looks to have been a tester build. How it made it into the public is beyond me, but we just received word that the 5.9.902 update is headed to testers tonight. The changes are not all that significant or different from the .901 build, but grabbed the new bits and threw them into a list for you below.

  • Remove VCast Music preload
  • Add Amazon MP3 app preload
  • Motorola Terms and Conditions screen automatically enables data collection/location details
  • Google security patch to block access to change Home panel icons
  • After factory reset, location consent screen shown on activation screen
  • Change “Terms and Condition” screen title to “Motorola Terms of Service”

Nice of them to remove one piece of bloatware and at least swap it out for an app that we use on a daily basis, Amazon MP3. The other stuff listed there though, is a bit odd. From the info that we have been given, we cannot tell if Moto is now automatically enabling data collection/location details or if they are removing this auto feature. We also are not exactly sure what Google’s security patch to “block access to change Home panel icons” means. We will hopefully know more this evening.

To see the full changelog from .901 to .902, be sure to check this post.

after waiting months for them to “fix poor connections etc” i told them to shove it and send me another device that matches mine and they said thunderbolt and the first razr..i said the thunderbolt is older than bionic and the razr is not the maxx version so they gave me the rezound.. perfect 3g connection/4g.. sense is ok but it is the 3.5 version and the HD 720p screen blows the bionics screen door pentile out the water.. so i waited to long for a fix.. just wanted to let you know there is options if you decide.. i mean we are under contracts and they will try to make you happy just if you do dont settle for the other phones i mentioned.. who knows they might over more now.. i did this like two or three weeks ago.

  • Ctnerd

Any updates on this actually rolling out?

    • Dime-Baggins

I don’t think so.  I have been keeping an eye out on this and everything else out on the web points back here.  Kellex – any thoughts?

  • Skeetch79

Matt (forums manager at motorola had this to say:
“ What the heck are you talking about? Why would we do this?
Guys, this is all just rumor. You know the soak tests have credibility when they post my confidential emails on the tech sites, right?”

His post can be found on the following page: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/40cc13fd3f?post=40cc13fd3f&start=91, post 92.

  • Dime-Baggins

I think it’s a haox. I call shenanigans on this one!!

  • dquicknc

    Hey Kellex,
Have you heard anymore on this .902 update?

    • Skeetch79

I agree, any news? There isn’t any fresh news about this anywhere! Don’t leave us hanging!

  • Anonymous

Hey Kellex — how about an update on this? It’s been 2 days and no signs of this update appearing anywhere…

    • Skeetch79

Yeah really…all the news about the 902 update on the web refers back to your posting a few days back. No other mentions. What is the word, thunderbird?

    • Dime-Baggins

I agree.  Has anyone gotten the update yet?

For those that say .893/.901 fixes the connectivity problems… I reverted back to my stock .901 build today while at Miami airport. I never acquired a data connection during my entire 2.5 hour layover. My phone signal was 1 bar, except when I made a call, it jumped to 3-4 bars. I thought that maybe the network was down, or that I was too deep in the building, then the woman next to me in the terminal pulls out her 1 week old Droid RAZR, she has four bars, and 4G LTE Data. WTF!

I switched over to my Safestrap Liberty ROM with .901 update installed.

I almost lost it. When I reached my final destination, I decided if I don’t get a connection, I’m going to head directly do a Verizon store and ask for a new phone.

6 minutes after my connection landed, 3G popped in. Ten minute later, it acquired a  4G signal. Twenty minutes later, 4G signal lost, no data for 20+ minutes. I’ve about had it with this phone. I really wish I had some recourse. I’m ready to put it back to bone stock and turn it in for another one.

Remove VCast Music preloadAdd Amazon MP3 app preload

Why “pre-load” either?  You can just donwload it if you want it!

I currently have 893, I am always having data issues. If I install the 901 version that  moto accidently released shortly after the ota push of 893 and someone posted the download link on this site…. is that going to take me off the “ota path”?

  • eddieonofre

SO when is the Bionic gettinh ICS?
    Ohh yeah NEVER

I just called Verizon and demanded a new phone with a extended battery shipped overnight because since November i have been dealing with 3g connection issues to where rebooting the phone was insane.. even with the December bug fixer update it still sucks.. i love Motorola and the voice quality and noise cancellation is top notch but i had enough!!  I had to pull over on the interstate because i lost signal for directions for an exit i had to take and thats when i said enough is enough. I must have rebooted that phone 30 times in the last month over that problem. I never owned HTC and i know sense is a battery hog so i hope the extended battery helps a little.. they offered me the Razr and i was like no, you cant remove the battery and the maxx is almost out anyway.

    • BionicCommando4231

That’s what happened last week to me that finally made me lose it. There was an accident blocking the highway on the way to work so I pulled off to take a backway. Part way through, it dropped data and the map wouldn’t update. I was in BFE, now late for work trying to cycle airplane mode, then reboot, trying to figure out where the hell I was. Finally got it back, but a BS exersize none the less.

Never made it all the way to work w/o Pandora going down at least once. Old 3G phone never had a problem. VZW is f’ing this 4G thing up a bit so far.

      • Anonymous

I know what you mean, i did everything erasing data, factory reset etc.. back in November they promised it would be ok with the December update and no luck, i waited patiently and gave up today.. Verizon said Motorola is working on the problem but this changelog has nothing to do with fixing the connection issue.. so i told them im not waiting no more .. so i sealed the deal with Rezound so far every youtube video has positive reviews.. the extended battery cover is horrible ugly but im not loosing connection while navigation ever again.. i thought it would have my directions cached in memory long enough if i did loose connection and that didnt happen because the connection was lost for a long time.  Not to mention i have google voice and my voicemails wouldnt show up if i rebooted… my old 3G Lg Dare was better than this lol… i used to own OG Droid and Droid x1 and never had these problems.

        • BionicCommando4231

Lots of deja vu there. Got one foot out the door to the rezound, but haven’t bailed quite yet….

  • Daniel Dlugos

I’d like to know what the source of this is, because it seems like all of the soak testers for .893 are reporting they haven’t received information on the .902 update.  I guess time will tell.

Yeah, yeah, but when will Motorola and Verizon fix all the problems they caused with the Gingerblur update to the Droid X?

Ok, yeah, I give up…I guess I might as well upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus. Too bad Moto, you could have had a loyal customer, instead you have yet another disgruntled customer who will tell everyone not to buy Motorola phones because you don’t support them when you screw them up.

FYI: DO NOT BUY MOTOROLA PHONES, MOTOROLA SUPPORT SUCKS. THEY WON’T EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEMS THEIR UPGRADES CREATE.

    ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. BOYCOTT MOTOROLA!

      No, just no.

My DX is still @4.5.596 and the only problem I had was the keyboard. Didnt really matter too much since I use Swiftkey X anyway.

What problems are you referring to?

I am on my third replacement bionic which is on 893 and was still having issues until I swapped the SIM for a new one a week ago but now I am starting to have signal drop issues again. I put the .901 leak on my last bionic and it didn’t fix anything…   I love this phone when it works but it doesn’t work too often to forgive moto for dropping this bomb. Everyone who has it should be given a chance to exchange for something else.

  • Jake

I only carr how my Bionic looses it service way too much. Most of the time I have poor or to no service at all. I will be upgrading to a Galaxy Nexus in March.

    • Illinipoke98

Give 902 a shot.  The leaked 901 fixed all of my service issues.

      • Anonymous

I have been running 901 since it appeared with P3Droid’s “get back on the path” fix and I must say I am very pleased with things now. I have had one or two (at most) data drops with 901 installed and I use this thing a LOT. I will say that battery life has gone down a tad with the new radios but I use the extended battery so I don’t take too much of a hit.

I just am eager to get ICS on this sucker and that’ll hold me over until a Tegra3 or similar device appears.

  • Jswede

Too little, too late. I already made Verizon replace my Bionics with Rezounds due to the data drops.

    • Anonymous

same hear i saw your comment and called and im getting the Rezound..

i don’t like the sound of “block access to change home panel icons”

Yea sounds a little iPhone-ish to me.

I’ve been trying to find a direct answer to this question elsewhere, but can’t find the answer, if you know… please help:

Is there a way to go from the leaked 5.7.893 to .901 yet?

    • Anonymous

Yes. Its been around for a few weeks. Hit up Rootzwiki. You’re in the wrong place for current DROID Bionic news here.

  • BigOSwi

I havent even got to .901 yet! I am still on .893. I am not rooted, anywhere I can get .901?

    • Jordan Webb

.901 was the leaked version of .902

.893 is where you officially should be until .902 is released.

      • Dave12308

It actually seems more like .902 is .901 with the included bloatware slightly tweaked. And a couple of security tweaks.

  • QtDL

    Bloatware removed?!? That’s shocking. :)

    • Daniel Dlugos

Not really … more like replaced.  They removed vcast music and replaced it with amazon mp3.  Its not a verizon branded product, but its still bloatware.

  • fartbubbler

all I want is the ICS update on my Bionic.

    • Bionic

A bit off topic but does anyone know if the
Motorola SJ1620A Travel Adapter for Access to the Webtop Application can connect to a non-HDMI monitor. i have a regular VGA and DVI monitor and have a HDMI to DVI cable and i’m thinking about buying the adaptor but not sure if it will work. I tried just the cable and it did not work, does the adaptor fix that?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000106808261 Keith Sumner

before you get that far, realize that a HDMI to DVI cable will only CARRY the video signal, it will not CONVERT the video signal, you may have to get a HDMI to VGA/DVI CONVERTER.

AKA this is far too much trouble/too much money for what you’re trying to do.

      • Anonymous

So what you’re saying is that i actually need a HDMI monitor to use the adapter? So what good is the adapter for? I can hook up a charger and a HDMI cable and achieve the same thing…. Right?

  • Anonymous

Seeing this change log makes me excited that I returned this phone!

    The Bionic has bugs?

    • Anonymous

VZW prefers to call them features. :-P

No, thats the fruit company. :)

  • http://twitter.com/_Averix Derin

Anyone figured out a way to get this 902 update onto a phone that strayed off the standard update path?

  • Metalface20

im loving .901. i am hesitant to take this update when it comes due to the data collection service….

    • Anonymous

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.  As long as there is nothing significant I probably won’t be upgrading anytime soon. My bionic is working just fine.

    • Illinipoke98

Ditto, loving mine with 901. It’s a solid phone now.  Not seeing a reason to go to 902.

Hopefully by the time ICS comes out there is an easy way to get back on the official upgrade path, or there is a great ics rom.

      • Metalface20

going to .901 should have put you back on the upgrade path

        • Illinipoke98

          Ahh very good!

          • Enkrypted17

That’s false does no one read forums? Not saying there will be no fix for you but unless. 901 was pushed to you technically you could be off the path.

  • John

“Google security patch to block access to change Home panel icons”

    wtf? security?

    • Jim

I THINK it is a fix to prevent rouge apps/websites from adding icons or changing icons on your home screen.

      • John

        Aww..makes sense

  • Anonymous

aah the bionic.. have to remind myself that i don’t have it anymore when i see a post like this.  i wish motorola had unlocked it like they promised, it was a nice phone.

    • Michael Forte

I feel the exact same as you, so much potential…

    • Jordan Webb

My thoughts as well. I’d have kept it if it hadn’t been buggy for so long and locked up tight. It was a nice piece of hardware.

  • Charlie

So, can those of us on 901 take the OTA to 902?

  • BionicCommando4231

All I care about is the stupid data drops. Hopefully this goes far to fix. The leaked version shows promise.

De-clusterf’ing the camera would be great too.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000106808261 Keith Sumner

I haven’t had data drops or camera problems since 893, and I’m on 901. Those issues have been resolved already on these versions.

      • BionicCommando4231

on OTA 893, and I get data drops all the time. Not the only one by any means. Pondering doing the leaked 901 to fix, but don’t want to get off path like the 7.893 people and have to the whole workaround to fix, plus had to ensure compatibility with the DT’s Kinetixs ROM.

        • Anonymous

893 fixed both for me as well.  I am currently on 901 rooted and won’t be upgrading again (it was a pain to get root on 901) until a stable version that i know will hold root is released.  Honestly most updates end up on here before pushed OTA anyway.  I would say you could try p3 path fix to get back onto upgrade path and try out 901, especially if you’re not currently rooted.  If you are rooted do forever root and make sure it’s in there after a couple reboots.

        • John Dixon

.901 doesnt get you off the path, it was sent out by moto by accident, so it has to be remedied and part of the path. .901 fixed all my issues i had, i have not had 1 data drop since i was on it. I have done 4 Bionics and upgraded all of them to .901 and none of them have dropped data. Stock camera is faster but even faster is the update plus dX camera app.  I am running Eclipse RC1 2.01 official rom and my bionic is screamin’.. i’m happy as i can ever be with my bionic and this phone will definately hold me off till the quad core phones come out. People want unlocked bootloaders but i can’t see a huge reason why. I had a bricked bionic i used the 893 FXZ files to fix it and then updated to .901 with forever root and its running better then it ever did. Its a fast phone also and 4g is smokin fast on it. I dunno about others but i am lovin’ the bionic…

          • Anonymous

the whole upgrade path nonsense is a sh*tshow right now on motorola devices.. that’s one big plus for the unlocked bootloader argument.  it’s a big relief knowing that at any moment i want, i can put everything completely back to stock and always have root and not have to worry about a path.  not trying to be a nexus fanboy.. just commenting on you not seeing a huge reason why with regards to the bootloaders.

          • Anonymous

You can do the same thing with the Bionic…..just sayin.

          • Anonymous

not without a lot of work and people like p3droid working over time to try to get everyone’s mismatched radios, kernels, and other crap realigned.  it’s a headache.

and for argument’s sake, try using pete’s root tool once you upgrade to 893 and then revert to “stock”.. you have to worry about stuff like that with a locked bootloader.. poof.

          • BionicCommando4231

It also shows how stupid the locked boot loader is. Its not stopping any dev work, it just makes it much harder than it needs to be. People are accomplishing all sorts of work arounds, so what’s the point?

          • Anonymous

well said.  it just wastes everyone’s time.

          • Anonymous

How do you like Eclipse? Im still on [S]hifter Bas3 and loving it. No data drops(that I know of….maybe it does in my sleep) or problems that I can tell. I thought about jumping to [K]inetix but support seems to be pulled for it to work on ICS.

Also thought about overclocking my Bionic too…..cuz we CAN OVERCLOCK THE BIONIC(that will never get posted here on DL)…since mine is pretty stable on supposedly unstable builds Im pretty sure mine has a good yeild and could handle 1.3Ghz

          • John Dixon

I have mine Overclocked to 1.2 stable, i can’t tell much difference over stock but the quadrant scores are much higher. I love Eclipse and currently is the only rom tha is getting Bionic love. I switched a while back from Theoryrom stuff to Liberty due to the fact that Liberty ran super smooth but also had so many add on features built into it and the UI was super clean. Add BGills Synergy Theme for Liberty and i was in heaven (with my ICS touches, i created). Eclipse on the other hand is the only one truely supporting bionic with 901 update system so i am running it and love it. I am running just the stock ROM, haven’t modded anything on it. I do miss the built in screenshot option in the power menu from Liberty though.

          • Enkrypted17

You’re statement is false. Accidental release to some doesn’t mean a fix pushed to them will goto you. In time we will see what they do but. 901 was never intended for the public.

          • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

I would agree that .901 was never intended to be public.  However, while Moto may not be the most trustworthy at the moment, they at least seem willing to correct their own mistakes.  My guess is that there will be two updates placed on the server, one from .893 to OTA and one from .901 to OTA.  Or, keep the .893 to .901 on the server and release a .901 to OTA patch.  Either way, the path would be restored for everyone, and in a few months we’ll all be enjoying some ICS :-)

        • Anonymous

I had a serious amount of drops on .893, I made the jump to .901 about a week ago and I have not had a drop yet.  Its like a night and day difference, its 893 is giving you problems I would try 901

        • Anonymous

Dude its easy to get back on the upgrade path if you want to. I have to ask though….why would you want to stay on the upgrade path? You can grab updates literally MONTHS ahead of when Verizon says “Ok release it Moto”.

Most people JUST got 5.5.893 what like begining of december? Ive been running 5.7.893 since October when it was built and I can go back to the uograde path if I want but I see no reason to. Im not having any issues with 5.7.893 so I see no reason to update.

          • BionicCommando4231

Its possible to get back on the upgrade path now, but from what I was following, that was only accomplished a few weeks ago with the new tools. There was def a time where folks who had flashed the cheesecaked 7.893 were stuck when the OTA 5.893 came out and were in despair they would be stranded off path.

I want to stay on the upgrade path as I want to get ICS, especially now the dev community has moved away from the Bionic. Yes I know there are a few still there and working on ICS even (tho 3G/4G is not working yet..) More than anything, I just prefer to be more conservative with it since the bootloader is locked and its not certain what fixes will become available.

I’m also using safestrap, so I keep my “non-safe” rom as the stock OTA pathway, then flash the custom ROM in the “safe” system. That way I can just switch back and apply whatever OTA, then reboot back into the custom ROM (assuming its compatible.)

          • Enkrypted17

Trust me 901>893 and with you’re current leak you aren’t getting. 901 or 902. You have no choice to get back on track if you expect to go further.

          • Anonymous

Cool story bro. But if Im not having any problems with 893 and it gives me great battery life…..why would I need or want to upgrade? Im happy right where I am.

Ill stay @893 until a decent ICS ROM comes out.

        • Anonymous

I haven’t had data drops per say, but I was having trouble connecting to a 3G/4G network period when I was going in between or coming off WiFi.  I found that if I unclick the data roaming box, I connect instantly.  Guess it is a bug but that could help people if they have data roaming enabled.

        • Wayles

I continued to have many data drops after 893 so I upped to 901 and I  saw a 95% improvement…

        • Natecfs

Had massive data drops… go to 901.. I de and haven’t had one issue since. -bionic-
