New CM7 Nightly Allows Users To Deny Permissions For Applications

Lots of people are always griping about the permissions applications ask for off the Market. Whether it be to read the phones ID, need full network access, or to send SMS messages. Sometimes, most of these applications do not need these permissions to work properly, so in comes the CyanogenMod Team and their big brains providing a solution.

Instructions are as simple as making Jell-o.

Tebee on Reddit explains -

To use it:
CyanogenMod settings / Permissions / Enable management
Applications / Manage applications / tap on permissions to revoke
Revoked permission are marked by a strikethrough.
Revoking and reenabling permissions is applied instantly. Though, at least reenabling “Network communication” requires a reboot (revoking still works instantaneously).

Just know, if you run into any problems, it isn’t the Developers fault. Be sure to make backups of your apps before trying because we would hate for you to run into any problems. You can get the new nightly by going through your Premium Rom Manager App or by visiting the Team Douche Mirrors Page. Have fun.

Cheers Michael!

Stericson “Permissions Denied” app has been in Market for at least a month…

Just put it on the droid x already! Is this a political move against Motorola for the locked boot loader to make the device less tempting to Phandroids?

  • Chris

Cool. Now i can finally deny permission to access my text messages on a text messaging app. They have no right to read that personal info.

    • Jaysckap

no you cant because your scared to root your phone

I have a very strong suspicion that Chris is just a troll.

*sigh* My D2 could die happy if it had cm7

I would like to deny VZW the permission to do anything other than count my call time, text messages sent/received and data used. I would pay a pretty penny for this…

      as usual… epic insight!

I just wish we could get CM on the Droid X.  =(

It’s a shame this probably won’t make it to the OG Droid in a stable version. Oh well, I’m just happy that I got CM7 at all in a stable form.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=705034 Jeff Simpson

The nightly works fine on my OG Droid. Why wouldn’t it end up in a stable version?

As a side-note, the name “stable”, “experimental”, and “release candidate” numbering don’t have any meaning in CM-land

“Release Candidate” generally means a release that will be called a stable + official release if there are no problems found in it. The number after the RC goes up with each subsequent change/rebuild, until the release is made. Thus, the highest “RC” is identical to the actual release. In CM-land, an RC is just another build that is named RC because they think it is more stable or close to being a release. It is not intended to be a release, thus it is really more of a “pre” than an “RC”.

“Stable” releases are made with known bugs still still in them. For example, the version of CM7 you’re running has a particularly annoying bug where if you are in an area with low or no signal for a period of time, your data signal will not come back unless you toggle airplane mode on and off again, no matter how strong the actual signal area becomes.

The only true version information is that a nightly build is built nightly and there are no expectations or guarantees. It might work fine, or it might not even boot. Generally they work fine, with the occasional exception of a new feature that doesn’t work quite right.

Summary: Just go and grab a nightly, it’s probably no less stable than the “stable” release.

Absolutely. I was thinking the same thing.

No, they’ve given us plenty of reasons not to trust them.

Can you name one, specifically? I’m curious as to what you know that ALL the people running CM don’t…

          • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

I believe that he might be talking about the issue with CM 7.0.2 but that was not a CM issue, that was a gingerbread issue that google acknowledged.

I personally do not directly use CM7 (Simply Stunning 5.2 has elements of CM).  I have never heard of a reason to not trust them.  So if you have, please enlighten me.

          • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

SS 5.2 was built from CM 7.  That is why they CM settings are built into it.  I have yet to try out 5.3 because I am having so much success with 7.0.3 right now.  That ROM is doing better than LG/GBA/SS 5.2

          • http://twitter.com/AndroidEcko Bonifacio

Correct, thats why I said “not directly”.  Indirectly…I use CM (Via SS5.2).  SS 5.3 has not released yet…has it?  If it has, can you provide a link.  I haven’t seen anything from ChevyNo1….     :-/

And did you ‘like’ your own comment?

Because if you have any doubts, you can download the full source, read through all of the code and give everything a once over with a scrutinizing eye.  Still have doubts?  Compile the source yourself.

      All cards on the table.

Because they’re people devoting their own personal time away from their jobs, families, and lives just to develop products for you to enjoy at no cost to you…that sounds like an excellent reason to not trust them…If you need one, I have a knife here for that sarcasm.

Seriously man… what’s the deal? I trust the Cyanogen Team! As a matter of fact, I gave them my social security number because I have that much trust in them:)
