Video: DROID X Gingerbread Walk-through

When the leaked Gingerbread (Android 2.3) builds for the DROID X and DROID 2 were released last night, we couldn’t help but dive right into them and see what Moto had changed.  At first glance it looked like a lot, but after playing with this DX build for a few minutes you quickly realize that alongside the few eye-popping cosmetic changes there are some back-end things that really make the difference here.  The performance increase you’ll see will have you excited even if the new blue Blur isn’t your thing.  We go hands-on after the break.

Anyone know where to get the honeycomb looking wallpaper on the screenshot above?

  • guest111

Hi, would you please share ur wallpaper? it’s awesome! I love it!!!!!!! Thanks!

  • digsoreos

BTW, it still has the timestamp bug! If you use an SMS backup app, incoming messages may not get backed up as they will appear to have arrived hours in the past. One message I just received shows that it “arrived” 5 hours ago. On the phone, it will display the correct time. However, if you back up SMS/MMS messages with an app like SMS Backup+ it will show the message as arriving at whatever the time was in Greenwich Mean Time. This seems like a simple enough fix. Not sure why it wasn’t fixed. Maybe it will be in the official release?

  • digsoreos

Anyone know whether they added the feature that allows you to take screenshots or screen captures directly with your phone rather having to connect it to your computer and the SDK?

  • Chris Nimon

Man that runs smooth. Where’s our Droid-Life rooted version like we got when Froyo leaked 😉

  • Paul Tatum

I keep checking for updates “GingerBread” but reports (No updates at this time) You are up to date.

Has anybody noticed any missing apps that cant seem to be located in the market?

  • Dustin G

I tried to use the Bootstrap app and load the file that was linked above, it said that there was an error in extracting the zip error code 7 and then installation was aborted, i rebooted the phone now its stuck on the motorola logo. Any advice please! I rooted my phone no problem, but dont know why there was an error in this process. As of right now I think its hosed or bricked.

  • Christophernapier

Where can I get that blue honeycomb wallpaper at??

    • a quick search on the droid life site will lead you to it just search “honeycomb wallpapers”

  • dshizzel

To be specific — yes, in order to get this to load to your device, you need to be rooted. Once it’s on, there is not currently a root hack for it, so you’re only way to get it back to stock for OTA is to do a SBF load. Like BNL says: It’s all been done!

  • dshizzel

OK, I had to do a wipee-poo, but after that, all was fine! Oh, and a reboot, too, to clear the low volume sitch. But, it’s fine now. Likin’ it!!!

  • Guest

im assumimg you have to be rooted to install this?!

    • tomNasty

there is no root yet….this is pure as a babys ass

  • Mygixxer

Can someone make a video on how exactly this is done? I know I’m not the only one that is scared about messing something up.

I could have sworn he said his phone WAS NOT ROOTED and was able to install gingerbread??? I’m not rooted but am wanting to do this. Is it impossible without being rooted!?

    IM MISSING SOME APPS

  • Troyschmeling

anyone else having major battery issues after running this??

  • Has anyone else run into this issue? If I click menu>Settings>Sound>Notification Ringtone, I get a message that says “Sorry! The application Settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.” Basically I can’t set a notification ringtone. If I go through Text messaging>Menu button> Message Settings>Select ringtone, underneath is says unknown ringtone, and if I click it it brings me back to the Text messaging main screen. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • vinnie

Has anyone had any issues adding apps to the home screens? It wont let me. Unless the new blur has some way of doing it that I’m not aware of, that might be the bug that it was rejected for lol.

    • Uncle Paul

Long press – menu pops up + to home and then Booyah

      • Socal_jnunez

nope long press /shortcut/applications pick and then your done

  • Ugh double posted :/ accidentally

  • Just forgot 1 thing
In the app drawer [I think it only works in the app drawer idk], there is new cool animation when you switch between portrait and landscape.
Also in the settings, menus etc, screens dont just pop up instantly without any zoom animations anymore. They have a zoom animation of around 75%
Keep the vids coming ! 😀

  • JagoX

Man who knew that Motorola could actually do a nice job with a skin after the mess they caused with the first MotoBlur & the version that shipped on the DX. This thing is FAST!

Loaded this up on my phone last night to see how the battery life is without being able to run TB, SetCPU & Autostarts. The only thing I do hate at the moment is the blue status bar…hope someone themes that ASAP back to black 😀

My only issue so far is the phone is not charging properly maybe that’s why verizon sent it back to the moto

    • Do it again and wipe

  • Arthur

Hate the new dock, vanilla Gingerbread looks better, compared to the Nexus S Droid X’s new Bionic look is fail. Other than that it seems like its moving in the right direction performance wise. If I do upgrade, I’ll probably wait till the ota gets here (if ever) really wish it looked more like Gingerbread than it does the Bionic.

I’m sure a stock gb rom will come out for it eventually.

  • somethingwired7

I’m not too big of a fan of all the eye blazing white… otherwise looks good

  • Has the FM Radio app changed any?

  • The350zWolf

Nice work by Moto, but it is totally not worth the upgrade to GB unless it gets rooted. I’m not giving up my root access regardless of performance enhancements. Although is not the same using Titanium and RootExplorer to remove unwanted blur on froyo compared to the professionally optimized GB, I can make my D2G run fast enough for the task at hand. Once GB gets rooted, I’m all in for an upgrade.

Does the new Blur now continually sync your contact photos with Facebook? Old Blur didn’t keep them updated, you had to unlink/relink your Facebook account to update the contact photos. Also, the old Blur’s Contact widget would distort/delete the photo sometimes on orientation change, screen load, etc… hopefully this has been fixed as well.

  • Jerald Danganan

I saw someone on Android Central say they got 6 hours of battery life does any body else have the same problem?

  • What about the lock screen animation when locking the phone? Does it have the CRT style blip out?

    • did u not watch the vid? he said its not there.

    • Anonymous

No, but I haven’t checked to see if there is a setting to enable that or not.

    • Nope.

  • Anonymous

Not going to install this. I have heard from two guys so far that know their stuff – both phones are bricked.

    • your lost. this is pretty wicked dude 🙂 im loving it.

      • I’m loving it too way better my x is awesome now kuckily I returned that POS thunderbolt

    • They obviously didn’t know their stuff. This is 101 material.

    • If they bricked their phones, they obviously don’t know their stuff. Next to impossible to brick a Droid, with the SBF readily available.

  • digsoreos

Anyone try the Netflix leak to see if it works with this build? Just for s&g.

    • Well, before going to GB it would force close before i could even browse. Now with GB i can browse and manage and. . . . . nothing else, damn

  • tim1984

Okay, so I’m on stock 2.2. I just downloaded ZRoot, Kouch Bootlooader, and the GB update…can anyone help me from here? Thanks a burnch.

    • you cant root yet if you installed gingerbread.

  • Anonymous

Noob question. I’m rooted, used bootstrap to make backups before etc. But I’ve never flashed anything to my phone. I want to try this out but am concerned about losing text message history, photos etc. I have titanium backup but I know that will be inaccessible for now since there is no root. Any one have a good suggestion on the best way to back up everything/restore it assuming I have to do the factory restore during the process?

    • RickX93277

Doing this update is like upgrading your pc. I did it and didn’t loose anything. So far I’m pretty happy with it.

bummer. they didn’t fix the unlock screen lag. the most annoying part, imo

  • Eazy

battery life is pretty good so far

  • JayDee

Noob question. I am rooted now (z4), I know I will loose my root if I load ginger bread. My question is how do i go back to my old rom and being rooted again(dark slide 4.2)? Also to all the people that have tried it, hows battery life?

    • Eazy

sbf to froyo. its the only way cause you lose root when you apply this update

  • Javonte

Can you flash back to a rom.if you dont like the leak?

    • Mmm77

No. You need to sbf back to 2.2, then flash a backup.

  • B-do

Yeah, does it still “fly right through” when you are flipping through if you are actually using the blur-widgets?

    • I had FB, Twitter, corporate email and Gmail all confgured through blur, and still as snappy as Launcher Pro was on 2.2.

  • Anonymous

anybody having problem with launcher pro!!?? scrolling threw apps something wrong there

  • Anonymous

anybody having problem with launcher pro!!?? scrolling threw apps something wrong there

    • wheels

yeah, i actually wound up uninstalling it. the blur launcher works very well, i think. the problem i was having was solved by not using the 3d drawer

      • Anonymous

The 3D drawer doesn’t work in gingerbread.

  • Chad

Anyone else notice that they removed the led notification from GMail? That sucks!! And the lights on the four bottom keys seem brighter.

    • Jeyrivera89

I noticed the hard key lights being brighter… but my notification LED still flashes with gmail.

  • I am now in love with Blur!!!! ♥ It has been greatly improved! Loving the lock screen controls! The rotation animations are pretty nice also! Im also loving the whole new color scheme because it actually matches the DROID 2’s color! I basically love everything! lol

  • Jeff

My first benchmark score was 1584. I am using my launcherpro plus with gmail widget and this phone is just humming. Great job guys!

    • Sillygirl71

mine is at 1685. I’m not using any other launchers.

  • tim1984

Do you need to be rooted before you do this or can u be on stock?

    • I believe so since you need to go into clockwork recovery to load the zip.

      • tim1984

        thank you

  • Figured out my benchmark score problem! I had a 1599, used acCleaner and advanced task killer, ran the test again, and got a 1750

  • DroidzFX

Mine does not say verizon wireless in notification bar…..hmmmmmm

  • I was not going to put this on since there is no root yet but I can never resist trying something new. I am glad I took the plunge even for just the text editing alone the cursor is MUCH improved. I also like the profiles where I can now have up to three different desktop configs. Moto has got this right and I hope that they and VZW push this out to the masses soon.

  • is anyone else really hating the blue? new blur is faster, but i cannot stand the look of it.

  • is anyone else really hating the blue? new blur is faster, but i cannot stand the look of it.

  • Anonymous

The screen rotation animation is worth mentioning as well (from portrait to landscape or vice versa). It is a nice touch and the best-looking/most-fluid I’ve encountered yet on Android.

  • also, can’t get active sync to turn off

    • Anonymous

Did you wipe data/cache? People who didn’t seem to have this problem. You’ll lose all your data and have to resync but doing a factory reset in the settings should fix that.

  • Anonymous

Still downloading…. 🙁 thank you bad data connection downtown.

  • I didn’t wipe before I updated to this and my corp sync acct is there but isn’t showing under settings > my accounts. Anyone know any other way to remove it so I can re add it under settings > my accounts ?

  • Anonymous

It might seem stupid to people who did the update but I really want to wait for root. If only because the bloat garbage. Hopefully someone will figure it out soon enough.

    • napes22

The bloat garbage is annoying, and I’m sure there is a ton of it. Would losing root really be that big of a deal if you saw the performance increase listed by Kellex?

      • Anonymous

I’m pretty happy with the performance on Liberty 1.5. It doesn’t feel lacking at all and all the screen transitions and drawer icons run smooth. I’ve been tossing it around in my head and I just finished a nandroid backup. Going to see how I like it and sbf/restore when I get home if I don’t.

        • Anonymous

Bloat can be hidden in the drawer by doing the custom group. Immediately what I don’t like is that you have to have 7 home screens, unless someone can tell me how to get rid of a few.

        • Anonymous

I upgraded from Liberty last night FYI. I’ve been very pleased. Only thing is miss is the WiFi tether for root app. The battery life has been pretty good FYI, and I was running ULV profiles with underclocking whewhen the screen was off.

      • GNO

I say yes. I love being root and I don’t want to move into Gingerbread until that is an option. To be honest, the phone is still fast under 2.2 No prob with games or lagging or anything. While increased speed is always nice, I get a lot out of being root and I’m still hitting 1300+ Quadrant scores (without trickery :-).

The thing I was impressed with the most was the fluidness of screen transitions and scrolling if thats hard to believe.. Call me crazy but it does look like the performance has had a nice boost… Before the screens were all laggy and even scrolling in the app drawer was not too great…

    I’m impressed

    • Anonymous

if that’s the case then I’m going to be super impressed with this build. The one detriment everyone hears when they let an ifan play with their android phone is that “it’s laggy” or “not as snappy” as the i*hone…

  • Thrlckdkn

Quick question guys – if I were to upgrade to 2.3 would I lose the apps on my phone that aren’t on the SD card? Does the new operating system wipe the old apps?

    • Lilsoccakid724

You will not lose apps 🙂

      • dudearonious

If you follow the instructions as listed, and are forced to do a factory reset and data wipe, YES, you WILL lose your apps.

    • Lilsoccakid724

You will not lose apps 🙂

    • dudearonious

I was stuck at bootloader, and had to wipe all data/factory reset. I lost all of my apps. At first I was all ticked off about that, but now I’m actually kind of glad. It’s a much, much nicer UI than I had, and now I can clean out some of the scraps. Just remember to back up your phone, contacts, and all of that jazz first, and then copy the data from your SD card to your PC just in case.

  • How are your benchmarks so high?! Mine is maxing out at 1599, and my phone is not bogged down at all. Is there something I need to do to optimize my performance?

    • Lilsoccakid724

      TJ,

I am not sure what made my benchmarks go from 1500 last night to 1800 this morning. I could be wrong, but it seems the longer i play with 2.3.3, the smoother it gets.

      • Thanks. I’ve been playing with it all morning and last night, but I’ll give it a bit, maybe use ATK and a cache clearer and try that out

        • Lilsoccakid724

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe a reboot as well?

          Good Luck and enjoy 2.3.3!

      • Ahh, okay, had a feeling, but as always, wanted to make sure first. I think I may install this later today when I get home, possibly, but not quite sure yet. From a lot of the people who have already installed it, it seems that they are quite happy with their choice in doing so.

Kellex… have you had any issues adding apps to homescreens? Everything is working great, except that I cant get apps on my home screen. PLEASE HELP!

          • RickX93277

I just tried, when you long press the app from your app list (not an app already on another screen) it asks if you want to add to your home screen

          • I figured out the problem a little while ago… Gingerbread doesn’t like Goto Lock. I uninstalled the app and then was able to add apps to my home screens. Before I reinstall it, I’ll just have to get my screens the way I like them. Kind of a hassle, but well worth it for the performance boost.

          • Elgatofelix79

Do you have any launchers such as ADW? If you do make sure your desktop is not locked. At your home screen, press the menu button and within the options menu, you should know if your desktop is either locked or unlocked. Unlock it.

          • Actually, rap technically is not music. Sometimes it has singing in the chorus, and that is an exception. However, rhythm does not make music music. You need the notes to be in key with each other, which is not done in rap

I enjoy some rap, so I don’t consider myself as biased as many people, but I just wanted everyone to know the facts

          • Kierralj

Music is organized sound…the end. Refer to any Music 101 teacher.

          • NDean

I normally don’t respond to trolls, but you did pull out the “technically” card…

            where are your technical facts?

Music is an art form whose medium is sound. Common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike), “(art) of the Muses.”

            hxxp://www.merriam-webster.c0m/dictionary/music

          • Samuraimke

Although “technically” maybe rap can be considered some type of music, I think what people mean is that they don’t agree with the insinuations and the messages that are found in most rap music….violence, prejudice, hate and inmorality. All of which have contributed to today’s morally bleak society. Rap is mostly listened to by “young” people. Most are inexperienced in life and driven by strong emotions that they do not understand and cannot control. Anyway, Droid rules.

          • Actually, rap technically is not music. Sometimes it has singing in the chorus, and that is an exception. However, rhythm does not make music music. You need the notes to be in key with each other, which is not done in rap

        Rap is not music. Period.

    • You are a tool. Music is music. Grow up.

    • Ehhh I never liked mainstream rap much. Underground hip-hop is a lot better IMO. To be perfectly honest, I was about to be on some “Eww, Wiz Khalifa” shit too, but then I remembered I have a life and don’t need to bash other people’s taste.

If you hate all rap/hip-hop as you seem to, I don’t see why the hell you even bothered to comment dude. It’s not like anyone is forcing you to listen to it, and shocker: most people don’t listen to music they don’t like.

For the people out there like me, who were very nervous about trying this out.

I was rooted using z4root and i decided to go for it. Downloaded Droid X Bootstrap ($2.00) and did a recovery and then loaded the zip file. After about 5 minutes (of sheer panic), it slowly but surely got Gingerbread loaded. It was crawling for me for the first 10 minutes, and I thought I just ruined my phone. I was wrong, and after giving it some time, it was up and running, and i must say i am VERY impressed with the new BLUR (I know, never thought i would say it either). my initial full quadrant benchmark was 1500 or so, which wasnt impressing me, and i thought i would miss my low voltage 1.3ghz overclock while waiting for root access, but this morning i was getting scores around 1800, and the phone runs smoother than ever.

If your nervous about taking the plunge, i completely understand, and i felt as if i made a mistake trying this along the way. But everything went very smooth, and am very happy with my choice.

Hope this can help some people out!

Do you have to be rooted first or can you do it from stock?

      • Lilsoccakid724

I believe you are going to have to hold onto gingerbread until people get this rooted

Try using Gingerbreak 1.1 That is what I used.
