Motorola CEO: Web-top App Not Exclusive to Atrix, Headed to High-end phones 2nd Half 2011

Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha is currently speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference and just dropped some news about the Atrix 4G’s web-top application that should make future DROID BIONIC owners happy.  He made mention of the web-top application not being an exclusive product to the Atrix and will come to all of their “high-end” devices, hopefully in the 2nd half of 2011.  The BIONIC was not announced with web-top accessories at CES due to “timing.”  Jha pointed out that it wasn’t possible to focus on developing web-top for both devices initially and chose the Atrix as the device to launch with it.

He also talked about the performance of the web-top accessories that seem to be getting below-average reviews on the Atrix.  They are aware that the experience is currently below that of a real desktop, but they feel that it can be brought up to speed in the near future.

+1.

I wonder if you will ever be able to install other apps via webtop?

The decade that Apple reigned supreme is already over. Let us welcome 2011 with the new king, Motorola! Having the docking accessory is a milestone for this company but being able to interchange models from this dock is such a genius idea. Sooner or later, other companies will try to imitate what Motorola has accomplished. I’m also excited to see the answer from Apple after seeing Atrix. As of now, all they can do is think and start from scratch because even iPhone 5 can not compete with this genius innovation.

Dont care. After playing with the Atrix and features im not sold. Great device don’t get me wrong. I would rather have a phone without the locked bootloader. I can see my Thunderbolt running CM7 in the future sitting next to my Tablet (whether its be the Xoom, HTC Flyer, or whatever I decide to get) and that’s good enough for me. Screw web-top.

  • Sputnick

Locked Bootloader = Sput not buying it

  • http://twitter.com/zachattack112 Zach

So, the webtop requires 1GB of RAM, right?

    • Mr.Joe

      Maybe it just needs DDR2.

    • The Om3ga Man

My thoughts too, or perhaps the additional 512MB is in the device but hidden from the OS (since supposedly the OS doesn’t utilize it) until Motorola could get around to enabling the WebTop code.

  • SamIam

Unfortunately this post is wrong about Bionic. Jha said high tier devices released after June would have webtop, this does not include Bionic. Changing something so major only a couple of months before release would have been disastrous.

    • The Om3ga Man

I don’t know all of this is a direct quote but this is what I saw from MobileBeat:
“Motorola will be bringing its Webtop apps and their corresponding docks to all of its high-end smartphones in the second half of this year, CEO Sanjay Jha told investors today.”

The specs for the bionic are pretty much the same as those of the atrix, save the ram, radios, camera, and the bio scanner. Even the USB/power and HDMI connectors look to be in the same general configuration and location. Coincidence?

      • The Om3ga Man

I stand corrected on the atrix and the bionic connectors, they are on the same side but in different locations.

All I want to be able to do is to plug my phone into my computer, and have it open a window on my computer that lets me interact with my device… because yes, I’m that lazy 8-)

Download Droid VNC Server, it’s free

Get Rid of that Moto Blur, or have someone like Koush do some magic on it. No wonder it’s geting bad reviews!!!Moto has been at this Blur thing for how long?? And, it’s still junk!!! Moto needs some seriuos help :P

Webtop will probably suck a little until google builds it straight into the OS, which would be a badass ballsy idea, and would cut off OSX L*on at the knees

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=545634778 Alan Paone

The Webtop should just be another homescreen app to take advantage of the bigger screen, imagine gingerbread on your phone and then an entirely separate honeycomb-ish desktop when you dock the phone. It’d be even faster than chrome OS, adn could still load something like the honeycomb browser, which is basically chrome OS anyway…

would rather have a phone and a tablet than a phone and a laptop that needs my phone so that it can run.

    • Penabl

my understanding is that you can also make phone calls in Lapdock mode. I dont own the Lapdock yet but I was given a demonstration via a video that showed the user making a phone call while in Lapdock mode. I dont know what else you feel that having two separate items that give you access to phone and one to internet is better than having it rolled into one when combined.

      • Anonymous

I am referring tobthe fact that the lapdock is essentially useless if it doesn’t have the phone plugged into it. I can be on my phone making phone calls while my buddy plays on my xoom, they are also not connected so if I need to go into the other room I can and he still has the ability to be on the tablet. Don’t get me wrong its a cool thing but it just seems limiting. Also one thing I have been wondering if it can be on the phone while using data? I know the thunderbolt is supposed to have this feature over 3g but was unsure about the atrix/ bionic because if it didn’t that would also be a huge deal breaker, because the XOOM has its own internet connection.

  • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Ive been saying this since the atrix ‘was announced everyone shot me down well told all of you

  • Anonymous

I had a feeling when the Atrix dock was announced that they would be doing the same for future high end devices. It’s a good idea and will be great when the devices are fast enough to handle it without hiccups.

  • Wctaylor79

So if the Bionic gets the webtop stuff then it has to split its 512 ram DDR or not with the webtop as the Atrix splits its 1 gig.. yeah.. pass. for me.. Thunderbolt will be rooted and rocking by the time this all comes down the tube..

    • DBK

You mean Bionic’s 512 MB of DDR2 Ram to Atrix’s 1G of DDR RAM, which end up being the same thing. Yeah, go ahead and pass, more for the rest of us.

      • Anonymous

I’m pretty sure that their both running DDR2

        • http://twitter.com/zachattack112 Zach

          yep

        • DBK

          *Feels like an idiot*

I retract that first sentence but stand firm on the second. :P

    • Lolwut

Worried about memory? Pssh. Obviously someone’s never used Linux outside of Android.

      • Mr.Joe

        Most people haven’t.

    • The Om3ga Man

Im guessing that an additional 512MB will show up when the WebTop code does on the phone. Imagine the complaints if 512 MB of RAM showed up on day one and you could use it for anything because the webtop code was not yet available. People would cry about battery being used for nothing or try to hack the system to utilize it for the Android OS.

Note: This is my speculation; based upon what I would do if I were doing the engineering over at Motorola.

To bad the laptop dock is $500ish.

  • http://www.youtube.com/lanech Lane Chaplin

When is the Bionic supposed to come out again? I was pretty sure I was going to ditch Moto and go Thunderbolt, but the all the drama with the latter has me worried. I may cancel my pre-order.

    • DMBatCOFC

Last I heard was the end of Q2… correct me if I’m wrong people!

      • Anonymous

        You are right, Q2.

        • Anonymous

The beginning of Q2 is right around the corner. I am another person that jumped on the Thunderbolt when I heard it was going to be coming out first and that the Bionic will have a locked Bootloader, but now I am back on the fence. The only question is when will VoLTE actually make it to all of the 4G devices.

  • BloodiedWraith

Now this is good news. It’s just a shame that Motorola isn’t listening to the rest of the complaints and feedback from the community…

*Cough unlock the bootloaders and stop using Blur cough*

    • Networkpimp

I with you, for the most part, about being against Blur – but I’m wondering if it’d be better to just focus the protest on the locked/encrypted bootloaders, and leave Blur out of it… once, we’ve got the bootloader issue untangled, the presense of Blur is moot, and those who don’t care can live with it, those who don’t can live without it. The bootloader, it seems, is the real underlying issue, and I’m think that bashing Blur doesn’t necessarily engender any real good will on the part of Moto.

      • BloodiedWraith

Oh I agree wholeheartedly. Those of us who root our devices and are comfortable with putting another ROM on there can’t really complain about Blur on the device if it ships with an unlocked bootloader. That is a sacrifice that I am fully invested in making. I just say get rid of Blur as well because no one likes it lol

        • Chris Nimon

I hadn’t played with the new blur till my brother got his Atrix. I can now say IT SUCKS. A few hours of playing with it and comparing to my DX and he bought Launcher Pro. Moto, please give us the option to sign off the warranty and get an unlocked bootloader option on all your phones. :)

          • TheDroidAbides

I’m pretty sure the the Atrix isn’t running the new version of Blur that will be on the Bionic.

          • DBK

It’s not. The Bionic will be the first with the new Blur (supposedly).

          • The Om3ga Man

As near as I can tell it’s functionaly the same non-moto blur that exists on the droid x. It just has the green and blue icons on the bottom and some slightly different widgets. I don’t have an Atrix (D2 here) so I don’t know if there’s deeper social media intergration than that, like the real Moto Blur UI.

      • Anonymous

Thank you for using “moot” instead of “mute.” Plus 1 for you sir.

        • Anonymous

Moot: an anagram for Moto. If they keep locking the bootloaders, Moto will be moot to me, but I won’t be mute about them. :-)

  • DMBatCOFC

    Holy moly batman!!! Too…. many…. choices…. sensory…. overload…. must…. have…. new…. technology….

  • Anonymous

i really hope this isn’t true, webtop sucks and its only going to delay the release of android updates on Moto devices even more.

  • Anonymous

Have it run Chrome OS in laptop dock mode and I’m sold. Oh, and unlock the bootloader while you’re at it. And remove blur.

You know what, on second thought, I’m not sold.

    • Anonymous

Or you could just buy a chrome OS laptop…

      • Anonymous

Already got a Cr48. I’m just trying to help Moto realise the err of their ways (oh, and have less devices rather than more; especially since one phone device = one data plan).

    • Anonymous

Me either, what a crappy phone.

      • The Om3ga Man

        Why troll here?

  • Anonymous

For some reason, each time Sanjay Jha says something, I want to believe the exact opposite.

PS: Are you “aware” of your errant “away” in the last sentence. :P

    • Anonymous

      Bah. :)

For some reason, I constantly think your icon is a Poliwrath. Bah.
