And Just Like That, Kongregate Arcade is Gone From the Android Market

When you launch a massive gaming application like Kongregate did yesterday, you should probably read the Android Developers Distribution agreement which clearly states that you can’t provide an app that allows people to download other apps.  And since they didn’t, their app and its 300+ Flash-based games is gone and will probably not be returning any time soon.  Google definitely frowns upon anyone looking to distribute apps through other apps that they might have downloaded from their market.  They have zero control over anything when this happens, and while they are pretty lax for the most part, this is a serious enough situation to warrant such a removal.

You can still download the app here.

Gone from the market? It was never there, when I read your post I clicked the link and nothing came up!

    R.I.P. Kongregate :^(

Easy come, easy go, as they say. Still..the 300+ “Games” within the Kongregate Arcade App isn’t really apps perse, but just flash games. I don’t know why Google would get upset over something like that. It’s not like they are losing money.

Whatever the case, it’s not like them removing the app from the Marketplace did anything anyways. People can still download the app from Kongregate’s site. Now..let’s just hope Google doesn’t try to get them to remove the app from the servers so it doesn’t work even if people download it elsewhere. Now that would really suck.

It didnt work anyway on my DX, all games either did not load or were white screens.
    m.kongregate.com works fine however.

I have a Droid X and the app works 100% fine..even though one game did reboot my Droid X, but it might have been the fact that I haven’t restarted it in days, so who knows. Could have been something else though.

Article should still state it’s available on their site and measures will be taken. Flash ftw. :P
    It’s a great app!

If you cant have an app that lets you download apps, how does AppBrain get around it?

    • lobbydizzle

It just references your phone to the Market (Although, the market page is not brought up).

But also, what if I use the Dolphin Browser to download APKs? Isn’t that kind of the same deal?

      • Anonymous

I think it’s different, if not for common sense reasons, then because all Dolphin Browser does is download an APK, which you then run. It doesn’t handle any of the actual installation and they’re taking no part in the distribution of said APKs. Kongregate’s entire purpose was to download and install games and the entirety of the process was done with in the app itself. I don’t necessarily think that makes its removal right, but I can see the difference.

I do wonder how Kongregate got removed but obviously IP-infringing applications such as ROM Gripper manage to stay around.
