  • Parallax effects have been used in early 2D games to create illusion of depth… It dates back to at least 10 years ago while I was playing Super Mario Bros on SNES. Some certain smart guy came up with the idea of using this on mobile phones, either Android or jailbroken iPhones. By the way, the credit should go to THAT GUY who actually came up with the idea, not AN ORGANIZATION like Apple or Android. Poor thing.

By integrating it into iOS, Apple’s real contribution is to bring it to the surface (i.e. normal users who never bother going out discovering innovations-scattered-on-the-net themselves — how many have heard of this before WWDC?). Whether that is a big contribution or not, well …

  • “you can say you’ve had it the whole time. Wink, wink.”
Pathetic. Sums this place up. If I tell you something is black, you will tell me it is white, right?

    • While I hate that many fan sites (Apple or Android) promote the Us vs. Them mentality, it is just saying there is little that iOS can add that Android hasn’t already done or can do currently. Truth hurts.

  • Wow. Android fans are getting seriously defensive about iOS 7. (Really? Nitpicking the origins of a gimmicky wallpaper effect?!) Apple may have hit some nerves with this one.

  • Hey, I have a question. This looks like a JellyBean ROM on that tablet and yet some of the popup windows and the highlight is still yellow instead of Holo blue and look like the ones from back in the day. How come this happens. I’ve noticed this on some of the ROMs that I install on my S3. Some of the screen elements are still old school and I have to install a JB theme in order to get rid of them. Why are these old components still showing up in JellyBean ROMs.

  • You guys are funny. Let’s find the truth together.
Apple didn’t invent the parallax effect – it’s true. Android app you mentioned, didn’t invent it to. They just steal the idea and sell it in the Google Play. Who invented parallax effect then? I don’t know..But i do know 2,5 years ago there was a cydia app with parallax effect: watch?v=bCc5oar7gik

You can see from the comments that at the moment it was released, there was no android alternative of this app. Thus android brings nothing new, and even if apple took idea from cydia, they had explicit rights for it.

  • I’ve had GyroSpace 3D Live Wallpaper on my Asus Infinity tablet for quite some time now. It has that same parallax effect as you tilt your device around. Apple is just taking things from the Android ecosystem at this point.

  • This was also a jailbreak app on iPhone years ago. I had it on my 3G. So yeah….it isn’t an android invention either. 😉

  • “…when your iOS friends start trying to show off this Fall, you can say you’ve had it the whole time.”

Actually, I HAVE had it this whole time. I got to laugh as I was watching WWDC and this “new” feature was announced while I was looking at my home screen (with this LWP enabled).

      • You should go back and re-read the article. This is, in fact, an app. It’s a live wallpaper, not an operating system.

        • Yes, I agree, the iOS7 Parallax isn’t an app. However, this Android thing is an app. There’s a massive difference.

          • Well…not really. The parallax wallpaper is an app. It’s what’s known as a system app (just means it’s baked in to the OS). The live wallpaper function in Android is a system app as well, it just has added functionality (e.g. allowing you to run third-party live wallpapers like this one).

There is no real functional difference between the two. Both function as active (rather than static) backgrounds, both can respond to user input and both can run behind “transparent” apps (which is a really cool effect that I wish more app devs would use…maybe now they will…gotta love the benefits of stiff competition).

Anyway, I’m glad you guys are getting this feature. It looks as though it’s being implemented well. Enjoy.

  • I’ve had something like this before on iOS as a jailbreak tweak and as a live wallpaper on Android….nothing new.

  • There’s a pretty good chance I’ll be switching to iOS when the new iPhone is out. Looks like it’ll finally drag me away after having had 6 Androids.

  • I think that I had this like two years ago on my droid x. Works really well with raindrop on glass background images.

  • Apple didn’t invent it neither did any android dev. I had this tweak on my jailbroken iPhone 3G 4 years ago!

  • OG DROID Anyone?!?!?!?!?!

I, and many others, had 3d wallpapers that reacted to orientation on the OG DROID

    • Here is a Droid-Life post about Live Wallpapers that change with orientation and direction FROM 2010….almost 3 years ago.

      Welcome to this decade, iOS

        • So what you are saying is that Apple is introducing something they had 4 years ago and calling it revolutionary again… huh how weird.

          • No, it was originally written by somebody of the Apple jailbreak community (Ryan Petrich, one of the best). Just like how android app developers have written it for android. Now Apple has taken the idea and baked it into the OS. Not unlike how Android has baked in many ideas created by app developers (without the due credit they deserve) Both Google and Apple should be scolded for presenting things they take from app developers and passing it off as new things IMO. But just in the grand scheme as it comes to this wallpaper, technically it wasn’t done by apple or android first, but an Apple app developer. Now if he took the idea from something pre-smartphone, I do not know. But to the best of my knowledge his was the first to appear on a smartphone.

          • wasn’t dogging the statement, just like how apple calls it new and revolutionary all the time when they clearly ripped it from someone else and call it their own.

          • What kind of idiotic response is that? You said they claimed this feature was revolutionary, I asked you to prove that they said that. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at the low level of intelligence on this board. Disappointed, but not surprised.

          • apparently you were born without a humor bone nor the ability to recognize sarcasm at its finest. So, with that said please before you open the gap you use as a feeding portal understand how apple likes to make everything they put into their phones and other products and use spin doctoring to make their products sound like they were the 1st to come to market (see lawsuits filed against other manufactures) and it was revolutionary.

  • WWDC always pulls the lamest haters out. Oh apple “stole” this from Android. Oh Android has had that forever. Who really gives a care? It’s obviously not affecting either company’s business.

    • The point is that Apple will get credit for “inventing” these things. I don’t personally care what phone anyone uses, but let’s give credit where it’s due. Android has been innovating, Apple has been imitating. In 2007 it was a different story.

I’m going to buy both this and the 3D planet wallpaper just to let the dev know that his work is appreciated. Apple just takes credit for the idea and doesn’t give the poor guy a dime.

      • Just gonna piggyback because I know other people have said that it isn’t new–this specific background looks extremely nice. Like one of those little McDonalds toy holograms from the 90’s, but with infinite frames and not just a few.

  • I can’t believe this was already in the play store. Does Tim own a Android phone and just buys up apps to see what features he can steal?

  • So does that mean if I download an icon pack, buy a live wallpaper and some apps that add some features, I can have a press conference too?

    • Yep. They were just showing off Jelly Bean, on an Android phone, with a iphone case over it to make it look like an iphone.

    • I assure you, having the clientele Apple has, you need far less than that. An empty cereal box with “innovation” written on it, would suffice. Apple customer is surprisingly easy to please.

  • Ha. This guy is going to make a bundle on this live wallpaper now (it already looks like he has with thousands of downloads).

This app is getting shoved into the limelight because of the iOS 7 feature. I say good for him.

    • You do know what is going to happen, right? Apple will come after him for all the money he has made off them.

      • Probably! We’ll just have to wait and see.

The only problem is that 3D parallax live wallpapers have been around for a LONG time. I’d like to see Apple travel back in time and make it their own (not)!

    • So it was something you could do if you jailbroke your iDevice and installed third party software. Great. Remember that the next time you argue that something Android could do for years doesn’t count as being original to Android because it was just a third party ad on and not original from Google.

      • Not arguing bro. I’m a full blown Android nerd and enthusiast just like you (Rooted/ROM’d OG Droid and GNex). Just saying that it took Apple this long to apply officially what the jailbroken community developed years ago. Nothing big from Apple once again!

      • Remember if it’s on Android it’s OK and can not be copied. If it’s on Apple, different rules apply.

  • Android is going to make a big difference. just keep your fingers crossed.

  • There is a tweak on Cydia that adds this effect to your iPhone that’s been available for a couple of years now. There are also tweaks available that add Control Center functionalities as well. Overall I think the new look is clean and attractive though. The icons look a bit goofy to me. Safari and the Game Center icons specifically.

    Sent from my Nexus 4

  • Anyone know of an app that is similar to this but supports 4.1 devices? want to get this on my stock ROM for my bionic

  • An older version of Google Music used to do this with the album covers when you had a lot of them on the screen tilting the device would make them rotate a bit to give a similar effect.

      • I loved that gallery! You could let photos shuffle from one touchpoint to another another if you pinched your fingers out when over a stack of photos.

It was like watching a deck of cards fly through the area. Only the cards were you pictures!

  • Just smashed my phone… Will give it a try on Wednesday when replacement gets here. 🙁

    • How dare you. Apple invented everything. They are god. No but that is what Apple really does. Take other people ideas, patent it and sue everyone and claim they made it

    • And when did Apple even claim it invented this?

The whole invention thing is just a straw man you guys bring out anytime Apple releases anything. You are just looking for things to be upset about.

    • 1. The same innovation can occur independently, look at the birth of photography if you actually want to educate yourself.

      2. For some reason it is only Android fans that feel the desperate need to claim everything as their own invention, I wonder why that is?

      • clearly you have never read a article with Apple and Samsung both in it where Apple users threw the first stone claiming Android is a stolen product and Apple invented the touchscreen despite everyone knowing IBM and LG did. Its just a bunch of jokes being thrown around. Both sides know no one can claim the right to a single invention since it takes a team. Its just all jokes and fun
