July’s Android Security Update Kicks Off Today With Factory Image Files, OTA Files

JULY ANDROID PATCH

Google is pushing out July’s Android security update to Nexus devices today and has done so by already publishing both factory image and OTA .zip files. They also provided the typical security bulletin as well.

As of right now, we have Android 6.0.1 files for the Nexus 6P (MTC19X), Nexus 5X (MTC19Z), Nexus 5 (MOB30P), Nexus 6 (MMB30K, MOB30O), Nexus 7 2013 (MOB30P, MMB30M), Nexus 9 (MOB30P), and Nexus Player (MOB30P).

UPDATE:  Pixel C files for July are now available as build MXC89K.

You can grab each image or OTA file at the links below. For instructions on how to flash a factory image, here you go. For instructions on how to flash an OTA .zip file, here you go.

Why am I not getting monthly security updates for my Moto X Pure?

      Because Lenovo.

Ok this fixes the recently disclosed Qualcomm issue with encryption. I guess as soon as WuguFresh got it updated, I’ll be patching.

You can manually flash this with WugFresh now.

I never figure out how to do that. Do you have a method of doing it while not wiping the data partition?

Select no wipe mode when flashing a factory image. Easy peasy.

Thanks, didn’t realize that I have the option of just browsing another factory image in the other selection.

Yep. Makes updating super easy once WugFresh is set up on your computer.

I really hope this fixes the infamous memory leak affecting the Nexus 5, as promised in the AOSP bug tracker (https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=195104#c21).

I didn’t see anything in the bulletin relating to it, sadly. I may have missed it, or it is coming in a future update. Probably N for relevant devices, and monthly security updates for those not getting N.

This was a security update, no?

And the last time this was fixed (March build), there was no mention of it in the change log too. I checked it.

Thanks Kellen, but us 1 percenters on Android N, rather not.

Every month this article comes out and I get excited for an update, but then I remember I’m on Nougat and it’s irrelevant. Now I’m sad because updates are so much fun.

Can I just say I absolutely love N? Google wrote some good ass code for this version, and it really shows in everyday usage. My 6P doesn’t hang or slow down nearly as much as it used to on Marshmallow, and that’s with a Snapdragon 810 and eMMC flash storage! Imagine what this thing could do with an 821 (823?) an extra gig of RAM and (hopefully) UFS 2.0. Just the thought of the possibilities makes my mouth water.

I agree with all of this but have noticed my battery life has suffered so much more on Android N. Are you have issues with battery life at all?

Honestly, it’s about on par with what I got on Marshmallow, which is to say “pretty average”. On a good day I can probably squeeze out 3 hours SOT, maybe even 3.5, but usually nothing more. They probably still need to do a little more fine tuning to make it just right (or maybe my 6P hardware is just aging pretty rapidly at this point). I will say that Doze is vastly improved from the version on Marshmallow. It actually kicks in much more consistently now, regardless of where I’m at or what I have open, which is marvelous. When it comes to battery life from actual usage though, it’s still pretty mediocre.

So glad my MXPE is still on the February security patch…

I used to own the MXPE. At this point, I really wonder what if any software updates Lenovo plans for this phone.

I bought one for my wife the other day when they were on sale, and it’s definitely an awesome phone for people who don’t know/care about updates. I just wouldn’t want to personally own one because I do care.

Sideloaded the MOB30O build on my N6 and it has a patch level date of July 5th, 2016.

This is my first security update since got my 5X. How long does it usually take for the OTA to hit phones?

On my wife’s 5x on VZW, the June OTA patch arrived about mid month. Unsure if that was VZW’s schedule or just when Google got around to her phone.

My June was mid month, right before i/o. Fi user. July was a day or two.

Takes usually about a week here.
