Archos has a new device this week, set to be shown off during next month’s IFA trade show. Called the Diamond S, the smartphone features a 5″ Super AMOLED HD display and well-designed stylings, priced at an affordable £159.99. When converted to US dollars, that is about $250.
Other specifications include a MediaTek octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, microSD card slot, dual SIM slots, 8MP front-facing camera, 16MP rear-facing camera, 2,300mAh battery, and Android 5.1 “Lollipop.”
As of right now, there is no exact availability known, but it seems likely US consumers can expect to see this device later in the year. If there is no official launch in North America, we don’t see why you can’t import it, depending on the LTE bands it ships with.

Budget-friendly device fans, rejoice!
Paris – August 25, 2015 – Today, the French brand ARCHOS is excited to announce its newest addition to the ARCHOS Diamond line: the ARCHOS Diamond S.
“There is an enormous demand for superlative smartphones like the ARCHOS Diamond S at prices that the average person can afford,” explains Loic Poirier, CEO of ARCHOS. “We’re happy to be releasing this product that furthers the mission of technical quality for everyone.”
ARCHOS: a story of high-technology democratization
Through its releases of 4G/LTE and impeccably-designed products, ARCHOS has established itself as the foremost democratizer of top-rate technology. Recent high-end ARCHOS smartphone releases have included the ARCHOS 50 Diamond and the newest ARCHOS Helium smartphones, which have been well-received by critics and customers. The new ARCHOS Diamond S embodies this same democratic high-tech spirit and builds upon its legacy with its powerful octa-core processor, exceptional specifications, and sexy design for under £159.99.
World-class features, one device
The ARCHOS Diamond S has a 5” Super AMOLED Gorilla Glass 3 screen that puts the smartphone in the premier leagues of screen quality. Its flat, glass-finish design is a perfect external manifestation of the outstanding technology inside the device. Sleek and slim, the phone slides easily into a pocket and nestles comfortably in the palm of a hand with its 118 grams. With just once glance, the design hints at all the brilliance that lies therein.
It also features an Octa-Core processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage, so music, games, and content can be enjoyed without compromises in speed or storage. To complement this performance, the smartphone comes installed with Android 5.1 Lollipop, Android’s newest operating system. Battery management, push notification display, and user interface are all improved in this new OS. It also has fast charging capability to be fully ready as soon as possible.
The ARCHOS Diamond S offers dual cameras with impressive specs, so there is no need to settle for mediocre picture quality when using a cell phone to snap shots instead of a standalone camera. The back camera captures scenes at 16 MP and the front-camera takes 8 MP pictures for excellent selfie and videochatting visuals. As is customary for the ARCHOS Diamond line, the ARCHOS Diamond S will offer 4G/LTE connectivity for the fastest download speeds available on cellular networks today.
The ARCHOS Diamond S will be presented at IFA in Berlin, beginning September 4, 2015. For more on the ARCHOS story and the brand’s products, the ARCHOS booth will be in Hall 4.2/121.
The ARCHOS Diamond S will be available in November 2015 for the impressively low price of £159.99.

Capacitive key and lame SCAMOLED. lol the colors on these things are horribly oversaturated. They usually look like super green or super red, etc. AMOLED greens lack color balance, and have a shorter lifespan than SLCD or related technologies. Truth be told Samsung uses them because they’re dirt cheap, easy to produce, and they know that you won’t notice the difference. Motorola switched to LCD for a good reason…
Owned a old Archos Jukebox mp3 player that was modded with Rockbox on it. Still have it somewhere. It was pretty cool back 15-20 yrs ago. Makes me wanna go dig it up and give it a go again…..
….
Actually…doesn’t look bad. My gamepad is a broken pile of poo though so hopefully they’ve figured out some quality building techniques in the last couple years.
It’s 2015, why would you put the micro USB port on the top left of the phone? Why?
The date has no bearing on a design decision, good or bad. If you’re going to throw a non-sequitur in your statements, at least make it a funny one.
Oh but it is. It is reminiscent of the early days of Android, when OEMs were throwing ports left and right and top and bottom. Early Windows Phone 7 devices were no different,as some had micro USB ports on the top, as well.
Nope, that’s just plain wrong. You may not like their reasoning but they had to have had it, and I’m quite certain that “We don’t know what year it is” isn’t it.
Given that they’re a French company, it’s most likely that the majority of the French market prefers it that way.
Seems like a good place for it to me. Better than at the bottom anyway. I usually use wireless so not a big issue.
I love the “5” Super AMOLED Gorilla Glass 3” screen. The rest is pretty Meh.
This article doesn’t mention that it’s only 720p though.
edit: the 3D render states the screen is 5.5 inches not 5, so 720p is definitely going to be noticeable
Is that a glass back I see? Premium materials FTW!
(Cue the glass- and metal-hating trolls…)
Why exactly are they trolls?
Not hugged enough as a child i suppose?
I meant are they trolls just because they disagree with you or? because from what I’ve seen they make some pretty good points
Having opinions and expressing them is fine. They’re only trolls when they are incessant and unyielding about “being right” regarding phone materials.
It ain’t Ralph though
2300mAh? Nope
Not a total deal breaker. Bought an Alcaltel One Touch Idol 3 4.7 (one of the worst names of any phone) after I shattered my Nexus 5 to hold me over for a month or two, it has a smaller battery than that and gets me through 8 hours of streaming music at work.
The Idol 3 5.5 has great battery life at 1080p/2900

All you do is look at the batteries. I bet if you strap a 10,000mah battery to a turd you will love it. The reason why I wouldn’t buy this garbage is because they make crap. I’m shocked their still in business. They need to keep selling that garbage in France were it belongs.
they’re*
I’d support the company for using bigger batteries. I’d then criticize them for using worse specs.
Archos was my first android tablet. Loved that thing until I got the Galaxy S Player and realized how poor the build quality on buggy the software was compared to the Galaxy S Player. I have not seen much come from Archos in the US since then, hope they have improved their software!
I did like their video player app.
I use to have some of Archos first media players but it became a money grab because they wanted you to buy codecs to unleash their full potential. And they just never caught up to the Android spec war. Plus their quality is garbage especially their LCD tech.
Mediatek – LOL
Why is that funny? Just because it’s not used in flagships, doesn’t mean it’s bad.
This one is beast http://m.gsmarena.com/mediatek_helio_x30_chip_packs_ten_processor_cores-blog-13384.php
That is a 10 core though, the one in the Archos is an octa-core. Not saying either is bad or good. just your link is pointing to a different processor than what the Archos has.
It has been a while since I tried a Mediatek device, wouldn’t mind giving it a try to see how much they have improved.
I’m just saying they are stepping their game up
It took about time for Mediatek to step its game.
