We’ve unboxed the Nexus 5 and given you a tutorial on how to unlock the bootloader, so in this video, we’re taking a look at how it compares in hand and in terms of size to a whole bunch of this year’s flagship phones. Since we have most of them in house (outside of the G2), here is how the Nexus 5 stacks up against the HTC One, Moto X, Galaxy S4, Note 3, and Nexus 4.  (more…)

Video: Android 4.4 Kit Kat Overview and Tour

ANDROID 4.4 NEXUS 4

With Android 4.4 Kit Kat now in AOSP, the ROMs are flowing out to devices. We booted up a 4.4 build on our Nexus 4 early this morning and have now put together a tour of some of the big changes. We had initially thought that Kit Kat wouldn’t be the massive overhaul we were hoping, but it turns out that it is somewhere in between. We’ve got a new launcher, better Google Now integration, new dialer, and some other apps, but a lot of the rest is fine-tuning and polishing. It’s a great update that you all need to try as soon as you can, whether that be through a ROM or a Nexus device.

The video runs over 13-minutes, and I’m not sure this even touches on it all. Be sure to let us know if you’d like to see anything else! Also, to see the entire list of Kit Kat changes, hit up this extensive post. And if you’d like the Google Home or Google Experience launcher, be sure to dive through this list of installable apps from the Nexus 5. With Android 4.4 hitting AOSP yesterday, it was only a matter of time before the first set of stock ROMs started showing up for our favorite devices. An AOSP Nexus 4 ROM was the first to pop into our inboxes late last night, though we are sure there could be more at this point. For now though, we wanted to share this to get you into the comments and sharing others for other devices.  (more…)

Nexus 4 With LTE Stopped by Bluetooth SIG Yesterday? (Updated)

white nexus 4

A week or so ago, a rumor surfaced suggesting that Google may introduce a Nexus 4 with LTE alongside the Nexus 5. As you are all well aware, the Nexus 4 originally launched last year without LTE, something many couldn’t give Google a pass for. In a day filled with nothing but LTE, the lack of it in Google’s flagship smartphone was inexcusable. But what if they were to re-introduce the phone again this year, only this time with LTE on board? According to a Bluetooth SIG filing that dropped yesterday, there may be a chance of that happening.  (more…)

Nexus 5 vs. Nexus 4 [Specs]

NEXUS 5

Thanks to a leaked service manual for the upcoming LG Nexus 5 that arrived over the weekend, there really is very little we don’t know about the phone outside of a release date and price. Well, the name “Nexus 5″ is still not yet 100% confirmed, meaning Google could end up going “Nexus 4” again like they did with the 2013 Nexus 7. We continue to see references to both names here and there. But either way, we feel as if we have a pretty good grasp on all things new Nexus phone.

Below, we’ve put together the most recent set of specs, pulled from FCC documents and the service manual. None of this is official until Google announces the phone, it’s simply info gathered from a number of leaks.  (more…)

Images Reportedly Show Android 4.4 “Kit Kat” UI Changes – New Dialer, Messaging, and More?

android 4.4 kit kat

Yesterday, the images we have included in this post were sent to 9to5Google as a potential first look at Android 4.4Kit Kat.” Are they real or are they fake? That’s the big question on the tech media’s mind right now. The images show a familiar wallpaper, newly redesigned flat icons, and new UIs for both the dialer and messaging application. So are they the real deal? I don’t think anyone really knows. They could be a brilliant troll job or they could be an early enough look at Kit Kat that shows all sorts of inconsistencies for Google to tidy up before launch.  (more…)

Nexus 4 16GB Now Sold Out Through Google Play as Well

Screen Shot 2013-09-16 at 4.52.57 PM

Space has officially been cleared for the arrival of the next Nexus. Both 16GB and 8GB variants of the Nexus 4 are now sold out through Google Play, neither of which is likely to return. After a price drop of $100 for each phone, it took less than a week for the 8GB model to sell out. Here we are two weeks later and the 16GB version has joined the party.

We still don’t know the official name of the next Nexus, but we do know that it will be made by LG and look a heck of a lot like this. And this. Oh, and this.

Hopefully you had a chance to pick up an N4 before they sold out this afternoon. Even after being on the market for a year, it was still one of the best smartphone deals on the planet.

8GB Nexus 4 Now Out of Stock on Google Play

Well, the $100 price drop less than a week ago certainly worked, as the 8GB Nexus 4 is now sold out through Google Play. If Google was trying to push out remaining inventory before they announce a new Nexus phone, they only have the 16GB version left to worry about. At $249, I’d imagine it won’t last long either. There is still a small chance that the 8GB version returns, since the listing does say “We are out of inventory. Please check back soon.” However, that seems unlikely at this point.
