Verizon Employees are Already Getting Marshmallow on the DROID Turbo 2

turbo 2 marshmallow

You know how we first caught wind of a soak test on the horizon last week for the DROID Turbo 2 and wondered if it wasn’t Marshmallow? It may very well be. Owners of the DROID Turbo 2 Employee Edition (read: Verizon employees) started receiving a new the update over the week that weighs in as Android 6.0, software version 24.11.13. Yep, that’s Marshmallow alright.

So what’s new? Probably all of the same as the goodies in the update for the Moto X Pure Edition that started rolling out last week. And in reality, that just means you get what Google introduced in Marshmallow a couple of months ago, along with Moto’s suite of apps, which no longer includes Assist.

You get Doze, which might be the most underrated new Android feature in years. With Doze, your phone can sit idle for days and not die, as it simmers down and consumes little energy when not in use. As an example, just look at this screenshot from my Moto X Pure that I took a couple of days after it sat idle post-6.0 update. Pretty awesome, right?

You also get direct sharing with nearby folks who are on Marshmallow, better volume controls, easier word selection (cut, copy, paste, etc.), and almost everything else listed in this screenshot.

Let us know, non-Verizon employee Turbo 2 owners, if you see the update this week.

Did I read that right one of the best things about the Motorola phones is asist and no update. That just sucks I use that on a hrly bassis CRAP ON A CRAP STICK.

  • Am I the only one who checked out the Screenshot and Missed out where Doze kicked in, The battery life was great but Thats more due to How MXPE is.. Doze didn’t even kick in, If it would have It would have been real awesome

  • chris_johns

excited…but would be more excited if we were getting 6.0.1…i want my damn middle finger emoji!

  • Genkidama

Did the star wars wallpapers ever get extracted from the Droid Turbo 2 yet?

  • Jeff “BIG RED”

Weird that it didn’t launch with marshmallow.

  • romma

    Waiting patiently.

  • I know it’ll have a lot of bloat, but this weekend i decided to sale X2 and get the Turbo 2. To me, subtract the bloat and it’s what the X3 should have been. AMOLED, 5.4″, massive battery, shatterproof. Marshmallow this quickly puts icing on the cake.

    • tomn1ce

I’ve been thinking the same thing, but I’m still going to pick up the MXPE in a week or two. I’ve been debating over the MXPE and D-Turbo 2, but the MXPE because it’s unlocked has won me over. Just leaving too much control on vzw paws to tinker with the D-Turbo 2 and disable things like they always do on cellphones has me unease. At least the MXPE is unlocked and can be used on any carrier. If vzw pisses me off I could just walk away and not need to buy a new phone to use on another carrier by getting the MXPE. I just hope that Motorola continues to make phones like this and others OEMs take note and do the same.

      • I’m not planning to leave VZW any time soon. Still on unlimited. I bought it out right from Motorola, not Verizon. So it’s unlockable if I wanted to go anywhere. I”m past the point of rooting and changing things. The last phone i rooted was the Galaxy Nexus. Pretty much had to on that phone. Also, though, I had to get rid of the X2 bc of the whole “not going to update to Marshmallow on carrier versions”. I know some say, “if you’re worried about updates you shouldn’t have bought the carrier version.” If anyone reads this and plans to reply with that statement, don’t, because the unlocked Moto X 2nd gen wasn’t offered with CDMA radios. It won’t work on Verizon.

        • tomn1ce

Unlimited is the only reason why I’m getting the MXPE. When I said unlocked, I meant that you can use it on any carrier not for rooting it. I hear that after an updated vzw killed off the use of FoxFi on many if not all the Motorola phones. That’s why I’m not getting the D-Turbo, because that’s vzw baby and they can do with it as they please. Now with the MXPE as far as I can tell vzw has no say on the software that it will receive, I’m not too sure to what extent. By Motorola unleashing Android 6.0 on the MXPE and all at the same time looks very promising in that the carriers are not messing around with the OS.

          • unlocked: understood, that’s what i meant too. the rooting part was separate convo. I had FoxFi working on OG Moto X, but only through USB and not very well through Bluetooth. On that phone it didn’t work on wifi tether. I need to test it on other phones. I got a OnePlus X I can test it on. I’m holding on to unlimited for the streaming data. I’m not a big tether user anyway. But I stream musing and podcasts and youtube podcasts in the car all the time.

When you get your Moto X PE, set it up without the Verizon Sim Card installed. Once you have everything set up, go ahead and install the SIM. This will insure that the hot spot feature won’t be blocked. If you install the SIM, boot up the phone for the first time and go through the whole setup process, hot spot will be locked.

          • I assume this method will NOT work on the Droid Turbo 2. Can any one confirm?

          • tomn1ce

            Thanks for the heads up

      • pol

The Droid Turbo 2 comes unlocked as well; all Verizon 4G LTE phones have for some years now. Obviously, you may not have full LTE support depending on your carrier, but it’s worth noting.

        • tomn1ce

I know vzw phones come GSM unlocked but they may lack the other network LTE bands to work properly on other carriers…

    • Raven

The bloat is not so bad. I have only disabled 3 apps on mine so far:
      DT Ignite
      NFL Mobile
      VZ Navigator

      • patt

dt ignite on verizon phones is the worst it installs apps/games without your permission

        • Raven

It “can”, which is why it was the first thing I disabled, but I have yet to hear of them actually doing it.

          • patt

it does try doing a factory reset and don’t disable it for like 30 mins you will see bunch of crap like uber, candy crash etc lol it also does it job when you are first activating new phone, and after factory reset

    • Duffman

Omg! It’s “sell” not “sale”. I cringed reading your post.

      • Please, tell me how it feels to have never made a single mistake in your life!!!
But seriously, are you one of those people who read the morning paper, highlight the crap editors miss, and then mail the highlighted mistakes back to the newspaper editor? I had an English teacher in college, who was old as Jesus, that did that. She had nothing better to do with her retired time. What’s your excuse, @disqus_Q8fWCYTFNs:disqus?

        • Duffman

No excuse. I was educated through the United States worst educational system (arizona is dead last) and reading these comments blow my mind sometimes. The second you read the comment, it should jump out at you. I also have to proof read engineering documents on a daily basis, so my eyes just pick up on things like this and it bugs my OCD.

  • schoat333

I’m still trying to figure out why it launched with L.

    • Honestly, after the crap Lollipop update the X2 and OG X got to 5.1, I’m glad it launched with 5.1.1. (I had both, and 5.1 was indeed a crap update.)

  • Raven

Makes me feel even better about buying 2 of them on Cyber Monday 🙂 Can’t wait!

  • koftheworld

it’s a good thing that the Turbo’s bootloader was unlocked recently! Too bad that Droid-Life refuses to post anything about it.

    • patt

Turbo1 😀 and yea they were so bashing turbo1 for not getting lolipop but when bootloader was unlocked they didn’t give a damn.

      • koftheworld

Exactly the Turbo 1 had it’s bootloader unlocked by @beaups. @jcase posted a beta version of sunshine on xda for this purpose.

      • TylerChappell

That’s because nobody gives two shets about the Turbo, especially not Verizon.

        • patt

Unlocked bootloader which has been hacked has nothing to do with Verizon lol

          • TylerChappell

Lolololol but Verizon & Motorola aren’t going to be in any rush to push an official build out that isn’t as buggy as CM.

          • patt

            it’s ok.

    • Marco Studenski

DL has made their stand on rooting pretty clear over the last year or so. They post news for the rooted and non-rooted alike, not the small, rooted community (I understand that you are referring to unlocked bootloaders, and not root access, but you understand my point). I can’t say I blame them… There’s always news in the developer community. That’s why we let sites like XDA handle that news.

    • chris_johns

      say what now?????

  • Desertwhale

I hope turbo 1 gets it soon after 2! I have a sneaking suspicion it won’t be and I’ll just have to flash marshmallow when CM13 drops for turbo.

    • patt

I assume you unlocked bootloader on your Turbo1 you could flash CM 12.1 on it but I see volte does not work. (I don’t have this phone) was just browsing xda

      • Desertwhale

Yep I’m aware I can flash 12.1, but I’m pretty happy with my current build. However MM has some nice features that would push me to upgrade.

    • Did the Turbo 1 Lollipop update get 5.1 or 5.1.1?

      • Desertwhale

        5.1

  • Dingus

Impressive, if true. The phone still should have launched with it. And they will probably wait a nice long while for 6.01 (or whatever follow up Lenovo grants users). Sitting here with a Turbo hoping the rumored February release is possible since they did this.
