This Concept of Instagram With Material Design is Stunning

Instagram with Material Design

We are still waiting for most major Android apps to receive a Material Design makeover, so much so that we have found ourselves checking out developer concept videos on Google+. The latest comes from Emmanuel Pacamalan, who has published a very polished concept video of Instagram, redone with a Material Design layout. It looks awesome.

The overall look of Instagram with Material Design is flat, properly laid out, and perfectly utilizes the new circular button in the bottom righthand corner. Check out the video below to see the whole concept in action.

Will IG on Android ever see a look like this? Highly doubtful, as the company would rather it look more like an iPhone clone. But regardless, our fingers will be crossed.

Hey, Instagram, hire this dude.

And this is why I changed from iOS to Android this month, in anticipation for L. Designs like this are beautiful!

  • DonEmu

Reminds me of all the Holo concepts of Instagram that existed, then it took them almost 2 years to release an update(only because iPhone went flat with iOS7) which was merely a slightly modified version of the one they use for iOS7.

So as nice as this is, would be extremely surprised if this ever happened.

Hey I know a couple of those guys profiles on IG! :-)

  • mattb

    Double tapped and liked!

  • Colin Zack

Maybe its just me, but it kind of drives me insane that he spelled “Trying” wrong at :43 and then at :46 its spelled correctly

  • scastro87

I think words like stunning and breathtaking get used way too frequently now. I get it though, it’s a blog and you have to sound excited.

    • joe23521

I find my agreement with your stunningly insightful comment truly breathtaking.

  • http://www.geordienorman.com/ George Byers

In your dreams… That will never happen, the instagram devs are lazy and just port the IOS app…

  • Carlyle C. Wilson

This is how Instagram should look from the start.

  • Maxim∑

    Material design is good however…

For 2 years I had to hear how iOS users are obsessed with animations and bright colors and now that Android is adopting it its suddenly no longer a problem.. To bad probably only a few developers will actually take the time to follow these design guidelines. Also to bad Google cant make the app submission process more strict

    • Jason Downing

I hear what you’re saying, but we’d lose a lot of great apps if the guidelines were more strict. A lot of these developers are one man teams and their strong suit is code, not design. Sure a beautiful app makes you want to use it, but if it doesn’t function properly or efficiently, I will uninstall.

      • Maxim∑

Yeah I see what you mean. Making apps takes a pretty long time by yourself. It’s not completely the developers fault either I think google needs to stop relying on eclipse as much and take Android studio more seriously

  • Cael

    Get that job

  • ajftl250

that looks like rudy apps kinda guy that makes 6tag for windows phone

  • MikeSaver

You guys, this isn’t real though. J

  • Kree Terry

“We are still waiting for most major Android apps to receive a Material Design makeover.” You’re kidding right? We are waiting for the actualy L release. We can’t do anything with these redesigns until we get an updated OS lol.

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

Apps can be released without Android L, since they’re all separate from the OS. We have G+, Chrome Beta, etc. It’s up to developers, not Google. :)

      • Kree Terry

True, but to take full advantage of material (including animations and elevation) you have to be on L as far as I can tell. I could be wrong though, wouldn’t be the first time.

      • zurginator

Considering Google explicitly stated that apps are not to be updated until L releases, it’ll be a while.

    • youssef jbili

the OS is gonna be updated , and we’re sure we’re going to receive it , but for the apps , we can’t tell if they’re going to receive the material design makeover or not

    • Josh Oleksyn

Actually, developers can update their apps with true L theming right now and push them to the Play Store. Anyone running the L preview (devs and custom ROMers) will see the updated themes, while everyone running KitKat and below will see the older styles. Backwards compatible theming has always worked this way on Android.

    • trixnkix637

The dialer on my Moto X, and the interface of my Google Drive app says you’re not all the way correct. The design can be achieved without the OS, ask anyone on Nova Prime Beta.

  • Cesar

    Materialization Nation, anyone?

  • DC_Guy

It really does look good. I’m excited for al, of the Material Design awesomeness. I just ordered a GPe device and will be experiencing “stock” for the first time on a phone. I say first time because I didn’t keep my Nexus 4 long enough for it to count.

  • TheRunner024

    I love the animations.

  • L is for Losers

Material design is very underwhelming in and of itself. However, this designer did some eye-catching things with it.

Perhaps Google should hire him to do something with the catastrophic pukefest that is Android L…

    • flosserelli

      “Catastrophic pukefest”?
Do you have any first-hand experience with it?

      • L is for Losers

Yeah, I have a Nexus 5. Installed the preview. Sh!t sucks. Notification system is garbage and ugly as well as recents. I unistalked it after about 3_days. Went back to 4.4.4

        • trixnkix637

That’s probably why they called it a preview my friend.

        • Aboud Scott

It’s so simple and amazing design, the best so far but it’s just a preview it ain’t complete! Expect way more when it’s released..

  • http://thebeeobee.com/ thebeeobee

    The animations were impressive.

  • http://www.about.me/kendallseabury Kendall Seabury

The day Instagram follows Android UI/UX guidelines will be the day hell freezes over.

  • MacNificent

    Wow. I love Google+!

    • Suicide_Note

      I love cheesecake.

      • MacNificent

        I love lamp!

    • flosserelli

      I like turtles.

  • Disqus_n00b

Is anyone else getting tired of flat everything?

    • Suicide_Note

      No. Next question, please.

      • http://www.about.me/kendallseabury Kendall Seabury

What is the deal will airline food?

        • https://www.heartbleedbug.com/ Intellectua1

Never had airline food but the real question is what’s up with the dang crappy drink selection.

        • siddude11

          I am eating Pasta.

      • MacNificent

When is the flip phone gonna make a comeback?

    • Phil Stout

I think it is nice, I’m, just tired of the news… since it’s not news worthy

    • flosserelli

I got tired of flat everything when I hit puberty.

      • Jordi Agricola

Your profile picture makes this all the funnier.

  • Nathan Bryant

The thing I really like about L is that the animations make sense. They’re not there just for lust, but they make sense in the actions you make. The other visuals are lovely too, like the depth and flat look at the same time.

  • hyperbeatser

    holy cow that’s amazing

  • Justin Van Nostrand

Holy crap. This is the kind of thing that will impress people who have never used Android before and still remember it as the ugly and slow platform it was back in the Gingerbread days. Very cool.

    • EdubE24

Then they buy an S5 and it all comes back….

      • Nathan Bryant

Haha true. You only experience a taste of Android through third party apps on Galaxy devices.

      • siddude11

Haha you sir didn’t made my day. :)

      • ClickFire_

sadly yes. most ios switchers go running back to ios. I can’t wait until he Day Samsung bails on Android for Tizen. HTC, LG and Motorola Deserve more limelight and marketshare.

  • Phil Stout

Tim, you are officially the #1 material design fanboy

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

      I’m cool with that lol

      • Phil Stout

I really just don’t get why all the hype. I mean, yeah the design is nice and all – Better than before, that is for sure. Is it because of the summer tech news lull?

        • Bryan Mills
          • Phil Stout

I am saying that I am tied of this material design news. It is not news worthy. Droid-life keeps posting this crap every time anything might get material design or has been announced to get it. Give me a weekly update. I don’t need play-by-play news here

And look at that, another material design story has been posted to droidlife… http://www.droid-life.com/2014/07/29/google-docs-sheets-and-slides-get-material-design-styled-web-home-screens/ …. FML

          • youssef jbili

if you don’t like it , don’t read about it it’s that simple

          • http://www.twitter.com/cltnwd Colton

            *hates Material Design articles*
            *links one for other readers*

        • joe23521

I’m with you on this one.

I think the design looks good. Really good, actually. But hyping it like it’s a revolution of some sort is just beyond my comprehension.

          • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

I can see why you might think we overdo the talk about Material Design, but the UI guidelines for Android are an important part of the ecosystem in which we report on daily. It’s cool to see what designers and developers are looking to create for Android, so as long as we are an Android blog, we will probably keep talking about it.

          • joe23521

It’s not even the fact that you guys are talking about it constantly. It’s just that I don’t get what the big deal is with this new “material design”. It is very clean and modern, yes. But it really is more evolutionary than revolutionary, IMO.

          • Jason Downing

The user experience on Android is one of the most argued topics because let’s be honest, until recently it wasn’t that exciting. It was appealing to techies because of the ability to make it whatever you want, but if you want to appeal to the average user you have to make it beautiful and easy to use. Android is steadily moving in that direction and I think these articles are important to Android since they’re not one to advertise it themselves.

That being said… It’d be one thing if this was all they were reporting, but that’s not the case. They report the news that comes across their desks or computer screens for that matter…

But that’s just my opinion and you’re of course welcome to your own.

          • Ryan O’Neill

Thank you. And the more Material Design gets talked about, the more it will be implemented as the new standard. Maybe developers will notice the publicity that comes with an app redesign and do it for their app too.

  • Alan Paone

love too look at cards and whitespace instead of full-bleed images

  • ToraRTC

Wow. That was amazing. Great work.
