Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy S3 Gets Kit Kat Update Today, Galaxy S4 Mini Too

Today, is apparently Samsung Kit Kat update day for a couple of carriers. Joining Sprint, Verizon has now approved Android 4.4.2 updates for both the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 mini.

Both updates bring that Kit Kat fire, which includes a revamped lock screen, restyled notification areas, expanded emoji support, wireless printing, default SMS chooser, and Samsung KNOX 2.0. Isis Wallet is also now pre-loaded on the Galaxy S3 and a bunch of bugs have hopefully been squashed for both phones.

You can find the full changelogs for both below.

If your device does not see the update today, be patient, these things typically rollout over the course of a week or so.

Ok I still haven’t gotten this update? Someone inform me why please?

  • Purplerose76

I’m having issues with my S3 since the update. My gmail won’t sync and the play store won’t load.

    • Purplerose76

After posting this I turned my phone off and back on instead of “restarting” it and now everything is working.

Major issues with Kitkat on Verizon S3s according to various media outlets. Issues including non-Samsung chargers not working properly 8+hours to charge a phone. Missed calls and texts. T-mobile and Sprint also have issues related to connectivity and wifi connectivity. Also people are complaining about issues with GPS features

  • Dan

Once again, the update has made things worse.. Which I knew would happen, but as always, I have no choice- they force you to install the update.

Now the GPS button is completely gone, replaced by a ‘location’ button. So before I could leave regular cell and wifi location on all the time, and easily turn GPS on and off as needed. Now you have to go deep into the the settings to choose which ‘location mode’ you want. And every time you turn location off and on, it resets the location mode regardless of what you had before, and there are now two annoying dialog boxes that you can’t get rid of!

I never thought I’d say this, but I’m starting to think about switching to an iphone..

  • Rusmir Kajanija

hello to all,is a true that verizon lied about kit kat for samsung sch i535 I got update vrucnc1 but that is jelly bean 4.3 not kitkat software, anyone got a idea what is that?? somebody here is a liar…..

  • Hien

I’m rooted on a Verizon S3 at 4.3, it won’t let me update. Is it because I am rooted? And if so, how do I fix this?

  • MustKillMoe

I have a S3 myself. I downloaded the new update today, it seems the battery icon is not changing anymore when the phone is plugged in to charge. Are you or anyone else getting this problem?

    • la

Yes. I using a iPhone charger block and a HTC rhyme cord. It use to charge my s3 fine. Now since update. I’ve been having a charging problem. Show it charging but percentage on battery keep dropping. Plz help if you find solutions. need to undo the update.

  • JPB

Wow. With all the whining they did on this forum about it, you’d think Droid Life would have noticed that tap and pay now works for Google Wallet, not just Isis!

It really does, just used it this morning.

  • Ryan Chapman

Anyone else getting some errors? Had my camera unable to initialize (reboot fixed for now) and when I am using navigation in the car with it charging my battery just shows a red x through the middle of it (but the % goes up, so apparently it is charging)

    • Mudokon83

yeah i saw the RED X thing, i guess thats the new icon for charging WTF?

    • It looks like they are now detecting non-Samsung chargers, after trying 3 universal USB supplies I had here, it only seems to charge using the original Samsung charger. The red X on the charge indicator otherwise….damn.

      • Sequoia

Oh so that’s the problem. My official S3 USB cropped out on me months ago. Guess I’ll be seeing the red X until I get a new one.

        • Seems to be OK on DC charging, I’ve been using a Moto charger and an external battery pack, both work fine, the limitation seems to be with AC powered chargers. YMMV. 🙂

    • Michael Yater

It appears to have something to do with a non-oem charger. I had a warranty replacement phone so I kept my original Motorola charger. The phone displays the Red X whenever you plug in a non-oem charger. It shows a red X when I use my Rayovac charger that I’ve been using for months, or a certified-Samsung charger from work, but It would show that it was charging with my Motorola charger but I plugged it at 83% and it charged to 52% yes it discharged even showing that it was charging. It also showed that it was charging with an HTC charger but same issue it was actually discharged, I plugged it into my Verizon home and car chargers and they both show red x’s as well but the car charger shows that it goes up but very slowly much slower than previously. I can charge my phone via the micro usb cord and either my external cellphone battery pack or my laptop. These seem to be the only 2 that are actually verifiably charging the battery with no issues. I called Verizon they were not aware of the issue and their entire system is down and I leave for a trip in 2 days. So I have to drive 8 hours with no gps on my phone or hope my battery makes it the whole way there and back…

  • Mudokon83

Looks like new WHITE ui status bar and a camera-only lock screen option.

  • FortitudineVincimus

    I still use 4.0.4 and don’t care.

  • jzwerlz43

just downloaded. seems faster and refined. enjoying it so far however its not allowing me to turn my pattern unlock off and go to just a swipe to unlock. does anyone know how to fix this?

    • Guest

here is a screenshot of my issue

    • stacyadell

Did anyone reply to you? I’m having the same issue as well after the update

      • jzwerlz43

I don’t think so I think you are the only one who has replied to me lol I’ve tried finding a forum about this but no luck

        • stacyadell

I found this in Android central and it worked, the other lock screen options are no longer grayed out. I deactiveted Andriod Device Manager, Lookout & SeekDroid. I have yet to turn them back on but plan to.

First go to Settings > Security > Device Administrators.
          Deactivate all programs there.
then go back to Security and click clear credentials at the bottom of the page.

          • jzwerlz43

Did what you said and it worked for me! Thanks a lot 🙂 I don’t use any of the administrators so I don’t mind having them off. Glad u fixed ur phone too

      • John

FoxFi works just fine after the update, it has been working for the S4 with kitkat and now the S3 with kitkat.

  • blackcatroad

Maybe I’m having a brain fart, but the software version in the above photos is the exact same as the current 4.3 build that is loaded on the phone currently. And no update love yet, I just checked.

    • Kevin

This. No update available to me, but the software version matches up (and it’s not KK).

  • crazed_z06

    Update all the things!

  • chris125

    Updates for everyone today

  • Tobi De la Cuz

My question is… why is Tmobile late in the S3 Kit Kat game?

    • hkklife

Because they had/have TWO GS3’s…..one is the Exynos-powered, 1GB, HSPA version from 2012. Then it was gradually phased out mid-2013 for a 2GB RAM, LTE, Qualcomm S4-based version like all of the other North American carriers have. Since #1 cannot officially handle KK and TW, TMO will, IMO, quietly let the LTE GS3 stay on 4.3 so they don’t have to go through the trouble and expense of updating a device that they sold for 1/2 the time and in far fewer quantities than the other domestic carriers. I was in BB last night and they still were selling new GSIII’s ! Heckuva run that device has had!

      • Guest

No American carrier has the Exynos unit. Check those facts of yours.

    • Guest

Who knows. Both the T999 and the T999L got 4.3 so I think perhaps this month they’ll finally get to release it. Both of those units have 2GB RAM so they will get KitKat. Don’t pay attention to hkklife below.

    • michael arazan

My friend has had it on his S3 sprint version for almost 2 months

  • Wayne

    Finally! You did good Verizon!

  • Mudokon83

  • Dan_17z

I wonder if it fixed the lag that 4.3 “update” brought on the SGS3.
2 weeks ago I finally rooted and flashed a few custom 4.3 roms, still not happy with performance.

    • kilbasar

Have you tried Cyanogenmod? Been running that on my VZ S3 for a while, it’s incredibly fast, zero lag even with dozens of things installed and copious multitasking. I use Nova as my launcher (it’s amazing how much difference the launcher makes in how fast your phone “feels”).

CM 10 (Android 4.3) is rock solid. CM 11 (Android 4.4) has some random reboot issues, but is also extremely fast and mostly solid.

    • e_droid

I run CleanROM 8.2 on my GS3, it is a sold ROM. Buttery smooth.

  • Mike Aurin

I like this. It means this poor sap on a tiered plan and a two year contract just may get the next major iteration of Android on his S4. Or not…since Verizon.

  • Ryan Chapman

I will enjoy it for the couple weeks until the new phone sends this one to the trash can

    • Dan_17z

This. My upgrade is in 3 weeks. But I may hold on to the GS3 a little longer now. Maybe wait for the SD 805 phone to hit….. or maybe just settle on the LG G3 at a lower price.

      • Ryan Chapman

I will be ordering the LG G3 as soon as it hits…And leaving big red behind when it happens

      • Julian Coronado

My upgrade is in 1 month, I’ll be enjoying this last month using KitKat! 🙂

  • hkklife

What a great run of support the 2GB LTE S3 has had. That device has been on the market for a little over two years now, giving it pretty much an unprecedented run as far as updates and support, especially for a non-Nexus device.

    • Droid Ronin

…and being on Verizon to boot.

    • Dark_Laser

It was the first flagship Android available on all carriers. I knew it would be supported longer than the exclusive phones because the carriers would have to compete on update availability, which is a major reason why I bought it.

      • JustEric

Umm…the original Galaxy S was available on AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint, plus a bunch of other U.S. carriers no one’s ever heard of.

The GS1 was noteworthy at the time specifically because of its lack of exclusivity. Granted, they all ended up with weird names (Captivate, Vibrant, etc.) and they LOOKED different, but they were all the same phone, save for the normal differences you would see across carriers (GSM vs. CDMA, for example).

  • Liquidretro

ISIS is preloaded but a vast majority of S3 owners don’t have a SIM that is compatible.

    • Mike Aurin

I have an S4 and still don’t even have a compatible SIM.

      • Liquidretro

Ya if you got a phone before the ISIS push you won’t have one. They are free to go swap out at a VZW store. However in my experience ISIS payments work less than 25% of the time. I have yet to try one with my Note2 after the latest update which is supposed to enable Google Wallet tap and pay payment.

        • rawr

Just watched someone struggle to buy their lunch with it, almost wanted to just swipe my card so I could get going.

          • dvschnk

Must be their phone. Mine works everyday. And with the sign up bonus and cash back bonus from AMEX Serve, ISIS has been paying for my soda and snacks from the vending machines at work everyday for the past 2 months. And with every five taps…$5 free at the snack machines…my co-workers love me because i’m just buying stuff with the credit and giving it away. Haven’t actually used ISIS at an retailer however, so not sure how the scanner works there.

    • PoisonApple31

I have a Verizon Note 3 and I couldn’t care less about Isis. Maybe I’d use Google Wallet if Tap & Pay was available after the OTA.

      • Liquidretro

Ya in my experience it’s a POS. No one wants to have to fund a prepaid card to make this stuff work.

        • PoisonApple31

I enjoyed Google Wallet on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus at first, but now its been a couple years and the Tap & Pay stuff hasn’t really gained much ground.

          • Liquidretro

Ya I am afraid that with out Apple and Android supporting the same standard tap and pay will be very slow to catch on. However with Chip and Pin becoming the new standard machines are going to have to be replaced anyways at stores and I can’t see this tap and pay adding that much additional cost.

          • rawr

Or perhaps have phones adopt the credit card standards as well.

    • FoodForThought

Also note ISIS is the initials for the terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria overtaking Iraq right now. Food for thought.

      • Liquidretro

Ya I wondered if they were going to rebrand because of this. It’s terribly ugly purple thing anyways.

  • Kyle Null
