Samsung Announces the Galaxy Round With 5.7-inch Full HD Curved Display

samsung galaxy round

We’re only hours removed from a leak of Samsung’s first device with a curved display and the company has gone ahead and made it all official. The device is officially called the Samsung Galaxy Round and is available in Korea in “Luxury Brown.” No international availability has been given, but Samsung has said to expect new colors in the near future.

Sporting a 5.7-inch Full HD Super Flexible AMOLED display that is curved, the device weighs in at just 7.9mm thick and 154g. In terms of other specs, we’re looking at a Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 3GB RAM, 32GB of internal storage (with SD card support), 13MP camera, LTE, 2,800mAh battery, and Android 4.3.

From a software standpoint, the Galaxy Round features special software that can take advantage of its curves. For example, you could tilt the phone to check to see if you have missed calls, the time, or battery life. This sounds exactly like the air gesture baked into the Note 3 and Galaxy S4, which we would prefer over having to actually touch your phone. You’ll also be able to tilt the device from side to side to change tracks while music is playing or manipulate the phone through one-handed operation.

In other words, this is a Galaxy Note 3 (faux leather stitched back included), but with a curved display and a couple of extra gimmicky features. We still aren’t seeing a point. But hey, curved display! Roll me!

Press Release

Samsung GALAXY ROUND Pioneers the Curved Display Smartphone Experience

New device presents world’s first commercialized full HD Super AMOLED flexible display

Seoul, Korea – October 9, 2013 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today introduced GALAXY ROUND, the world’s first curved display smartphone. Samsung has been a mobile display innovator by introducing color TFT-LCD, AMOLED, and Super AMOLED flexible display for its mobile product. With this pioneering curved display technology, GALAXY ROUND blends the latest smartphone screen innovations with unique design features. The sleek and thin Samsung GALAXY ROUND whichequipped with a 5.7” Full HD Super AMOLED with 7.9mm thick and weighs 154g offers a comfortable hand grip feeling to user, and exclusive experiences of curved display.

As a result of its unique curved design, users can take advantage of round integration experiences like the Roll Effect that enables user to check information such as date, time, missed call and battery easily when home screen is off, and the GravityEffect for creating visual interaction with the screen by tilting the device. For music, the Bounce UX enables users to control their music. When the GALAXY ROUND’s display is off while the music player is running, a short press to the left of the device will play the previous track while a short press to the right will play the next track. For pictures and videos, the Side Mirror feature enables users to gain access to list of the album content with a left and right tilt.

The large screen size of the GALAXY ROUND provides additional benefits to users. Useful One-Hand Operation features bring a user’s most desired controls closer to a preferred side of the screen. The device enables enhanced multitasking capabilities that allow users to fully utilize the larger screen through Multi Window, a feature that enables users to open more than one application on the screen, run simultaneous multiple instances of the same application or to easily share content between applications.

Samsung GALAXY ROUND is available in Korea with Luxury Brown, and more color will be available soon.

  • yummy

Put some boobs on it, and you
    got yourself a winner

  • They had to beat LG to it… and looks like they barely did it.

It looks super cool, definitely the first of it’s kind, but I fail to see how this is useful at all. I’ll stick with a Note3.

  • Sacrifist

I can’t imagine trying to play landscape-oriented games on this thing. Or games at all.

I don’t want curved display. I want metal aluminium body.

    • flosserelli

With expandable memory and a removable battery.

      • Liderc

        And no physical home button.

  • Milind Shah

It will be very difficult for you to take pictures on a rock with this thing 😛

Is this supposed to be innovating? I mean, Samsung was the one that made the Nexus S. This phone is simply curved in the other axis. I would prefer a fully flexible phone, not stationary curved.

  • shamatuu

I highly doubt it will come to the US. Maybe until next years. Probably never though.

  • NexusMan

    Galaxy Dumb.

  • percysnow

They dont want the Gs4 to breathe at all…

  • Ben Myton
  • percysnow

Did they steal an idea again? Cmon samm let the Gs4 breath some…

  • staticx57

The Samsung Salvador Dali would be more appropriate.

Although to be completely fair having the speaker on the back with the curve is actually quite useful.

  • Destroythanet

    The Samsung Galaxy Useless

    • NexusPhan

Why is this not at the top?

      • StuckOnVerizonForever

        Because it’s stupid.

        • NexusPhan

I think it’s hilarious. You’re just mad all the time because you’re stuck on Verizon.

          • Adrynalyne

To be fair that would piss anyone off.

  • hkklife

This would be the PERFECT platform to launch/test a new ”lite” version of TouchWiz, similar to how Moto and HTC have been gradually refining and reducing the obnoxiousness of Blur and Sense over the past few years.

For what its worth, I am glad to see a large screen Samsung device that’s not a Note and with beefier specs than the Mega models. Reasonsn for optimism all around!

  • Ian

    More faux leather….

  • JoeyKhache

The back looks like the HTC HD2.

  • Droidzilla

It needs a capacitive S-Marble for Super Innovative Navigation.

  • EnX$$

    Samsung Galaxy Taco 🙂

  • John Clausen

Whoever is naming these Samsung products needs to be fired. Galaxy Round? Bloody awful.

    • zurginator

Seriously. Galaxy Curve or Galaxy Arc would have worked better.

      • Reginald Jefferson

Curve was already taken by BB, but Galaxy Arc? I think you’re on to something with that one.

        • zurginator

Technically taken by Sony (xperia arc). Still think either could be used considering different first words and the time gap.

          • Reginald Jefferson

That’s right. I completely forgot about that little guy. It was a sharp phone despite having such a small screen at the time.

      • Liderc

Galaxy Curse is 10x better, nice job. Round is terrible lol. This is probably staying overseas, doubt it makes it to the US.

  • 213ninja

    at this point……………………………………………dumb.

  • jbdan

This almost makes me hate on my GS4…..this “first to market tech” is a turn off

    • Tim242

Somebody has to be first. Would you rather it be apple so that everybody can yell “Copy”?

      • jbdan

Never. And I love my S4. This just caused some temporary negativity towards the brand name on my S4 earpiece. Got N3 yet?

        • Tim242

Waiting impatiently for it. It says delivery is Thursday, but I’m hoping for tomorrow. Memphis is only two hours away. A boy can hope haha. I guess I should cherish my last few days with my S4.

          • jbdan

Hope you get it today T! Curious to hear your thoughts vs your gs4 🙂

  • a3uge

This product makes as much sense as those Google Play vending machines in Japan. Kind of cool, but…???

    • flosserelli

Which is why this phone will sell in Korea/Asia, but nowhere else.

  • Ian Smith

this is hilarious. at this point, samsung makes so much money that they can actually develop and release devices just to test if they sell.

    • interstellarmind

you have to admire them for using their money to truly try and innovate. (unlike Apple).

      • AbbyZFresh

        Samsung? Innovate?

        • JoshGroff

They usually do so on the software front, but yes, they do innovate.

      • jkr

Just doing something without reason or purpose is not innovation, it is throwing sh*t at the wall and seeing if anything sticks.

        • StuckOnVerizonForever

This is innovation. Example: unbreakable screen.

          • jkr

            Unbreakable? We’ll see about that.

        • Adrynalyne

          Kind of like the Continuum.

      • Jarred Sutherland

What are they innovating on? I’ve owned several Samsung devices and all I have seen is gimmick after gimmick after gimmick. The majority of the tweaks to their TouchWiz UI came from other developers work (control pull-down for example).

    • JoshGroff

If making them out of plastic saves them enough money to do stuff like this and bring random innovation, I can deal with that. Nothing a case can’t fix.

      • Tim242

The cases are plastic : )

        • JoshGroff

Not all of them. 🙂 I had a nice bamboo case for my S4 but it came in after I got bored and traded for the One. Shipping from China takes forever… >.> It is an awesome looking case though.

    • michael arazan

Coincidence the day after LG press release of their new display?

  • Doobsky

what is the point of a curved screen: better image quality, better viewing angle, or gimmick?

  • the_guest

Can’t Samsung just stick to releasing 3-4 phones a year just like Motorola and HTC than all these 8-15 somewhat flagship phones a year.

    • crazed_z06

Yes.. That’s a great formula.. Look how great HTC and Moto are doing these days

    • JoshGroff

That would be nice, but they really are trying to hit every niche with their devices. Kind of hard to do with 3-4 phones a year.

  • starnovsky

Curved screen would totally make sense in smartwatch (or other wearable tech). In a phone – not that much.

  • moelsen8

    this is half-baked

    • Tim242

      It’s a Note 3…with curves.

  • Danny Dodge

Note 3 without s-pen, whatever the actual thickness of device, the perceived dimension is thicker, unnecessary curve. Same price or more than N3 for less, except uncrackable screen.

  • radiohead14

    go home samsung… you’re drunk

    • Tim242

LG is doing it soon. Maybe you just need a few drinks.

      • Diablo81588

        Try harder dude.

      • tomn1ce

Hopefully LG flexes their device vertically or wraps the side of the device with the curved display. They already placed the buttons on the back might as well stretch the display to the side of the device.

  • Samsung – We Build Everythang!

  • Krzysztof Bryk

where to hell did You get this press release

  • Keagan Littlefield

Looking at the camera modes and they added a few (compared to galaxy s4). Does this mean that the gs4 is getting these features with the 4.3 update this month?

  • cwillen

    Samsung’s Manifesto:
    Step 1: Make it work
Step 2: Figure out why we made it.

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

I’m really starting to think this. They aren’t solving any problems, just making “why the fuck”‘s.

      • JoshGroff

They do a good job at creating market share for things you didn’t know you wanted. The again, that is how the tech industry works.

      • Tim242

The Note series was a “big” “why the f*ck.” I’m so f*cking glad they did!

        • crazed_z06

Seriously.. Its a good thing internet tech blog nerds don’t get to design devices or else wed all be stuck on OG droids in 2016.. They seem to yell “gimmick” at every new thing that comes out.

          • Tim242

Yeah, it’s a gimmick just because they don’t like the idea of it. Anybody that disagrees with them is just a troll. Sigh! Oh well. Like you said, it’s a good thing design isn’t up to them

          • JoshGroff

Most of the ones shouting gimmick are those refusing to run anything but stock who don’t accept that many features in stock were added because of so called gimmicks. Sure some features, especially the eye tracking are a bit gimmicky, but there have been some nice software innovations that stock users have benefitted from. (Active display anyone?)

          • Weber

How dare you come on the internet and have an opinion. Not OK, sir! (Active Display ftw)

          • whoa

I wonder if it be curved like that would make it easier to use one handed than the note

          • j

It’s a half gimmick, for sure. A gimmick is something intended to attract attention, but doesn’t mean that something is worthless. Just like the curved GNex screen, this registers as serving next to no purpose, but is gaining a lot of attention. Half gimmick, half design experiment, half tech beta.

          • Adrynalyne

“Anybody that disagrees with them is just a troll. ”

Yeah, and you do this a lot.

          • Jarred Sutherland

            “No I don’t, you’re just being a troll!” 😉

          • Daeshaun Griffiths

I’m pretty sure your not coming at me and just making a general statement but i’m responding to you anyway. i’m amening cwillens manifesto. Because thats what it seems like. Said device looks like they made the hardware, put it on a table with a people in suits surrounding it, then said “ok what can we make it do”. If they put this on the note 3, and emphasized on making it feel better in hand(because note 2’s are not so easy to handle) then i would’ve been claiming they are gurus. Their execution was weak, should’ve thrown it all in one and that would’ve changed things. I’d be in the note 3 cult. Like someone said below, Stop making 15-20 devices and make like 4-5 and wow people. One thing I do like about apple is that they keep silent all year then have a big event that puts the world on pause. But i also do like how google makes changes throughout the year. (forgive me for bringing up apple.) so i guess my “whyTF” is really “whyTF is there another 5.7 inch device in their line up?”

          • Big_EZ

I suspect two reasons why they have another 5.7″ device. First, they are testing the demand for this from consumers. Second, this is new tech, and they can’t mass produce it just yet but want to be the first to the market with it.

          • T4rd

But an OG Droid with a Snapdragon 800, 2-3 GBs of RAM and a 720p 4-4.3″ display would be AMAZING!! =p

          • tomn1ce

without the bottom chin would be even better unless they decide to put front facing speakers on the chin.

    • RoninX

      Step 3: Profit!

    • James_75

      See, supply does drive demand!

      • cwillen

So rarely do you get a good economics joke. Bravo sir, bravo.

    • stewie

Step 0 – In most cases, determine what Apple feature we wish to copy.

    • Adam Truelove

Step 3: F it up with Touchwiz.

  • James_C_L

    Bitches love the curved hardware

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

the one thing they found to make it useful is awfully slow.

  • hyperbeaster

    • Larizard

  • shecalledmejay

I think my Gnex as lost it’s curve over the years lol

  • @GoogleGoliath

To me it looks like a phone that’s been in a hot car too long.

  • green

should have made it with four curved sides and water resistant so i could eat cereal out of it

    • JoshGroff

The Galaxy Bowl, I’d preorder that.

    • michael arazan

Make mine a Beer Mug version

      • palomosan

In all seriousness, I know most people are hating on it but if this was Apple everyone would be saying it’s the best thing ever.

I know Samsung does copy a lot of Apple stuff and it comes out with some gimmicks but that’s what makes them strong, they’re taking risks by releasing devices to test the market, so far…they’ve made millions.

        Galaxy Note, example 1.

        • Stewie

I’m going to go out on a limb here – IF Apple had made it the curve would have been on the correct axis, not what Samsung has done with this atrocity.

        • Jarred Sutherland

They’ve made millions because people on the Android side are just as gullible as people on the Apple side. People will buy this because it is different and looks interesting, it offers zero new features besides the curved glass.

Hey to each his own .. people will buy it, just like they always do. But don’t forget about the gullible on both sides thing .. people are dumb everywhere you go.

        • embydextrous

bhai tu to senti ho gya..

    • Jeremy Gross

      you win the internet today

    • Kane Desousa

      Lol , good one !

  • Dorian Brooks

I was gonna say Galaxy Nexus & Nexus S were curved….. but this is actually a different kinda curved.

  • bluemon

Does it come with a curved Verizon logo? If not, no deal.

    • El_Big_CHRIS

      came here for this.

    • Naj

    • Pierito

Verizon had them flatten the surface where the check mark is because they felt it looked too much like a smile. They don’t like those.

    • Jeremy Miller

  • Sherlock Holmes

How about updating that touchwiz look…just hideous.

    • blahblahblah

Because that hasn’t been said a million times. Don’t like it, don’t buy it.

      • Butters619

And it will be said a million more because TW still looks like it’s stuck with Gingerbread styling.

        • Haroon Dar

my three year old droid charge agrees with u good sir

    • DaManfittyGrand

I’m getting sick and tired of the “touchwiz is hideous”…”ugly”…ect..ect….Millions of people including myself accepts Samsungs Touchwiz…It’s on the SGS4, Note 1 – 3….It’s here for as long as Samsung wants so get over yourselves….Also, on some you can root……However, the curved screen i’m not sure of the purpose??

  • jeff manning

    Lol at this device

  • Alexander

Gimmick Phone. Nothing really special, but it is a step toward more curved displays

  • Ben Murphy

But does it come in gold?

    • Maxim∑

No it comes in plastic leather for 300$ more unlocked then the Galaxy Note 3!

      • tyguy829

it’s the same price as the note3….

      • Justin W

That’s the price of the Note3 in Korea. They would probably be the same price in the US if the Round was released here.

        • Maxim∑

Yeah that would make more sense

    • Should have called it the Galaxy Thigh. The first super-phone to hug your thigh when it’s in your pocket.

      • Adrynalyne

The first phone ever to actually have a wrong way to put in your pocket.

    • M0nk

Luxury brown? Came on Samsung… Maybe gold is a better option.
The massive round screen may fit better in the front pocket rounding the leg, but seems overkill to me.
It also have a smaller battery than the note 3, so seems that they can’t do round batteries yet…

      • Jarred Sutherland

I always think of luxury when I look at the giant I just dropped into the toilet bowl. Ahh, that smells like LUXURY!

  • @GoogleGoliath

I thought I wanted a curved display until I saw it. I’ll take an unbreakable flat display please.

  • 918273645ams

uhh except all of those motions would work with any phone if they put a curved back on it.. not very impressed.

  • BPStroh

I believe my gnex also has a curved screen and was manufactured by Samsung. Have they forgotten about this device like Verizon has?

    • Porkchop

There’s a difference–the Galaxy Nexus has curved glass, not a curved LCD. The LCD is actually just a standard one.

All in all, this device just looks like a stepping stone. I wouldn’t see a reason to get it over the Note 3, even if it was available in the US (which it may not be).

      • Matthew Merrick

Except neither of those devices use LCD screens. 😛

        • Porkchop

          Um. Well. Yes. Technically. *cough*

          Flexible/Non-Flexible AMOLED. Yes. Quite.

I tend to use LCD interchangeably with screen due to working on monitors/laptops a lot. Must stop that!

  • Godzilla

  • Thomas

The battery is smaller than the Note 3, so no thanks.

    • Maxim∑

the phone is also a little bit smaller.

But spending 1,000$ for a curved display… might as well get the Note 3
