Official Nexus 7 Flip Cases Hit Google Play in Four Colors, Steep $49.99 Price

nexus 7 case

Google pushed out brand new “official” Nexus 7 (2013) flip cases to Google Play this morning that run $49.99 a piece. The cases come in four colors:  red, blue, white, and black. The red and blue  versions are mostly grey suede, though, but have red and blue interiors for pops of color. Each case also features a lower-left positioned Google flag, so you’ll never forget who designed your protective cover.

This case is the “first tablet case designed by Google” for your new Nexus 7, which features a built-in stand and a body that is “made to the exact specifications of your Google-designed technology.”

I’ve got to say, that these are indeed quite pretty cases. The price is throwing me off a bit at $49.99, but we have a couple on order already to report back to you with. Also, don’t forget to check out our mega-comparison of various low-priced cases that can be had through Amazon for as little as $5.

I feel that I have pretty much every case for the Nexus 7 2013. I have the Poetic Strapback, the Poetic Slimline, Official Travel Cover which is garbage, Official Premium Cover and lastly the rooCASE. I guess I don’t have them all as I don’t have the Moko. I liked the Official Premium Cover the best originally because of the feel of the case it felt just like the device but then I dropped the tablet and it would never fit in that case again. One corner would always pop out. The rooCASE is similar in feel but the front cover is too flimsy in my opinion. The Poetic cases are nice but in my opinion they still feel too cheap but I can’t really complain as it was $5. This case however easily looks the best but the price is hard to justify.

Too late, already went to Amazon.. LOL

  • Kisuk3

Picked up the Poetic Slim case you guys reccomended and absolutely love it!! Great tip

    • Trevor

Was just about to post this. The Poetic case is wonderful! I don’t need anything else.

  • joejoe5709

For an official and very nice looking case, I would have easily paid $30. $50 is too much. I think I paid something like $15 for my Moko and even that was higher than what some people paid. For the price, the Moko has been pretty great. So why can’t Google drop this down a smidge?

  • JWells

I guess if millions of people vote with little or no information to guide them, they will buy without money-saving knowledge as well.

  • John Simonelli

Apparently Google’s policy of “High performance and low cost” doesn’t co-exist with their accessories.

  • duke69111

It acts like google tries to possibly make up some of the lost cost on production with expensive accessories.

  • ToddAwesome

    $50 for a case? ‘Merica!

    • wh1te_mag1c

Are you kidding me? We have the lowest prices on most consumer goods, especially electronics-related. Stop being such a spoiled little *****. You have no idea how good we have it. Look at prices of electronics in Europe, for comparison.

      • ToddAwesome

        Dude, you have some issues.

        • JWells

          I’ll say . . .

        • wh1te_mag1c

Bah.. I’m sorry that you can’t handle the truth.

          • ToddAwesome

Did you order the code red?

      • Kisuk3

Yah stop being spoiled brat and pay $50 for a case worth $4…. You don’t’know how good you have it! Lol

        • xyz1111

That’s not the point. The case is obviously overpriced, but it has nothing to do with ‘MURICA.

  • jbdan

Definitely looks sharp, nice design. I would think with the right side of the actual case running full length it will have magnets and “turn on when opened” working. I have the Poetic slimline and while the price was right and it works decently, it screams “cheap”

  • yummy

Case to tablet price ratio bad, no donut

  • Detonation

So what, does Google try to make up the lack of profit margin on the devices by gouging customers on the accessories? I can’t think of a single instance where a Nexus accessory wasn’t overpriced (not to mention release well past the launch date)

    • http://randomphantasmagoria.com/ Shawn

They have to make it up somehow. They’re not making jack on the actual tablets. Accessories and sales of Google Play content have to make it up.

  • Shane Redman

    Love the design….but that price

  • fauxshizzl

Both my rooCase and Poetic look better than this and I got both for under $15.

  • http://randomphantasmagoria.com/ Shawn

This is interesting because Asus makes an official “premium” case for the 2013 Nexus 7 as well. I have one and I like it. Similar price point. A lot of people with first-run manufactured WiFi-only Nexus 7s found out that it doesn’t fit. It fits all LTE models, however, and later WiFi-only models as well.

No wonder Google decided to make their own version of the case after that fiasco. haha The Asus case is nicer, though. It has actual buttons on the case rather than cutouts like the Google version. The only thing that sucks about it is that it doesn’t auto-wake the device.

    • tyguy829

does the asus case turn the screen on/off with magnets?

      • http://randomphantasmagoria.com/ Shawn

Unfortunately, no, it doesn’t. But it’s a very solid case and adds almost zero bulk to the device. Plus it’s a trifold front cover kinda like the iPad cases, so that’s nice too.

  • Jerry

Will wireless charging work with the cover on?

    • Detonation

probably. works with the cases i’ve used (poetic slimline & cruzerlite tpu) and this doesn’t look any thicker

  • Bigsike

    Digging the Ohio State colors!

  • Bowen9284

Hard to justify buying one accessory that costs nearly 20% of the total tablet cost.

  • Jack3D
  • Pierito

$50?…does it come in a pack of 3?

    • palomosan

At $12-16 I’ll stick with the Poetic Slim case.

      • Pierito

I’ll continue going naked………I mean the device will continue!!! THE DEVICE…NOT ME.

      • Andrew Neuman

Does your Poetic case mess with your n7? I have both the original and final version and the magnets in the case cause my n7 to freek out and become unresponsive. I’ve gone naked and the issues have subsided.

      • akileese

I was shocked as hell to find out how fast they sold out of everything but red/white. That’s WAY too steep no matter the quality.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Hmmm looks nice. Is there a magnet that keeps the flap closed?

  • Matt R Carner

I have the Poetic Slim thing, and it does the job, but it’s not nearly as attractive as these. I really like the white/red one. And I hate the “Poetic” logo on my current one. It’s as bad or worse than the VZW branding on their phones.

  • conrad owens

It looks like a pair of socks… A $50 pair of socks :|

    • Adrynalyne

Haha, I thought the same thing.

    • Ian

Or sweatpants, for your lazy tablet

    • michael arazan

For that price it must be sold exclusively at Verizon, King of the bloated prices.

  • Josep Reis

I got one for $17 that looks much better,

  • ITGuy11

    Poetic Slimline $5 FTW!

    • Kisuk3

Yah try $21 with shipping now ;)

Still worth it tho, absolutely love mine.

  • Tony Byatt

No new HP Chromebook 11 love?

  • Greg Morgan

They’re nice, but my case that’s pretty much the same is better at $4 from Amazon.

  • StuckOnVerizonForever

Ew Google, sure know how to make devices cheap but not accessories

  • Jerry Huster

Does it contain a magnet to turn the screen on/off?

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Doesn’t say, but I would hope so. We’ll know for sure in 2 days when ours arrive.

      • Jerry Huster

I think that would be the very first “official” case for a Nexus 7 (old one included) to have it, if it does.

    • RayLovesick

It doesn’t. Just got mine and I can confirm that there is no magnet.

  • Butters619

    These cases look awesome!

….but not awesome enough to justify the $40 premium over the Amazon case i have that does the exact same thing.

But this would be an awesome thing to win in a Droid Life giveaway *hint hint* *cough cough*
