Verizon Will Honor Upgrades From This Past Weekend, Unlimited Data Shall be Kept

verizon logo

Well, we heard back from Verizon with regard to this past weekend’s unlimited upgrade extravaganza, and the news is going to excite those of you who upgraded, that’s for sure. According to Big Red, they will honor orders which were approved over the weekend, allowing customers to retain unlimited data and receive devices at discounted prices. Yep, you read that correctly.Β

Here is the statement we just received:

Over the past weekend, there was a software issue involving some orders for customers seeking to upgrade their devices.Β  A number of customers who were upgrading devices were able to maintain an unlimited monthly data feature while paying a subsidized price.

Verizon Wireless will honor those orders that were approved this past weekend, allowing those customers to retain their unlimited plans for the duration of their contract and receive their new device.

Verizon Wireless corrected this software issue today (9/30).Β  The company no longer offers unlimited data plans and customers who want to retain existing unlimited data plans, must pay full retail price for a replacement phone.

We still aren’t sure why some are seeing cancellations on orders or with 2GB $30 plans in confirmation emails. All we know is that Verizon had a software issue that has been adjusted, yet are still willing to honor “approved” orders.

So, there you have it.Β Thanks, Verizon.

My 2 iphone 5s arrived today did the activation online, everything went through smooth and I still have my unlimited data with no issues.

  • Da Moose

So I got my two Iphone’s today. WOW was it a battle with Verizon. They tried everything to get me to drop my unlimited data. But after an hour and half on the phone they finally honored my old plan. Thank good. Man theses phones are FAST. Loving it.

  • Rudy

I finally got my iphone 5s, activated it and I still have my unlimited in tact. No issues at all!

  • HVerizon

IPhone 5s arrived today. Did phone activation with no issues. After it activated I still had Unlimited Data.

  • apollo4

I ordered a Note3 during the glitch and saw when the phone arrived that I was getting knocked down to 2GB so I called Verizon to keep unlimited. After having no luck with the 1st line rep I spoke with a supervisor and I wanted to let you guys know that according to this Verizon customer support supervisor who claims his name is Zach with ID # 159023 this story about Verizon honoring the upgrade and keeping unlimited is a lie that droid-life made up and that everyone here and on other websites posting they have been able to keep unlimited are liars.
I had somewhat better luck with online chat and another rep and we will see how it works out but I wanted just wanted to share some info.

    • Stephen Lucas

I was fortunate I think, the first person I spoke with didn’t know anything about it supposedly, got bumped up to a supervisor that said I was the second call he received, asked for me to forward my e-mail receipt, looked it over then attempted to change my plan, which he was allowed to do. Had no problems at all.

  • greg

can i get a copy of that e-mail i ordered a iphone 5son the 27 and i am trying to activetit but they wot help me i have a copy of my e-mail Confirmation with it saying i haveulimited data

  • bluefolder

I am planning to sell the phone I ordered (iPhome 5s), deal with my Gnex for a bit longer, and use the cash for a off contact purchase in a few months (maybe a Motomaker Moto X). Does anyone know what I should do before selling the iPhone to someone else?

Do I need to call and activate the iPhone (and possibly this 2GB issue) then put my Gnex back on after? Can I just sell the phone without opening the box and activating it?

    • AvalancheRyder

You’ll probably need to activate it. I did this to use a family member’s upgrade a while back and needed to activate the phone on their line just for a few minutes before putting it on my account. Basically, if you order a subsidized phone and the first activation is on a different line than the line associated with the account, it won’t go through. Unless they changed it, this was in January 2013.

  • AvalancheRyder

Is anyone else having trouble keeping their unlimited data despite taking advantage of this glitch? I pre-ordered the Galaxy Note 3 and just received it today. My email order confirmation said unlimited data, but the paperwork that came with my order said it was a 2gb plan. I called and customer service told me I would be dropped down to 2gb if I activated this phone, and a manager confirmed it. Then they said that this statement Droid Life is saying they received was never issued by Verizon.

    • Burbank

You aren’t alone. You can read my experience below, among others. It’s not as simple as we had all hoped, but it is possible. It would certainly help if there were a link to an official Verizon statement instead of the quote here on Droid Life, but if you keep working at it you’ll keep your unlimited plan.

It will likely help if you have screen shots and e-mail confirmations from your upgrade process listing unlimited web and e-mail as part of the package since they seem to have printed something entirely different in the shipped paperwork.

      • AvalancheRyder

Great, thanks! The comments weren’t sorted by “newest” so I didn’t see anyone else’s comments on their experience prior to posting my comment. I will try the online chat with customer service and provide them with links. Which links did you provide them with? Just this Droid Life page?

      • AvalancheRyder

I just spoke with Kay on Verizon’s online chat service and she helped me. She activated my phone and my line changed to 2gb temporarily, but before the chat ended, she was able to change it back to unlimited which was reflected in my account page. Thanks!

It’s a shame that we need to contact them multiple times until finding the right person who can help us though,

  • Burbank

I upgraded from a 3G Droid X (over 3 yrs old) to a 4G Galaxy Note 3. Automated activation methods failed so I went to the site for help via chat. I just completed an 80 minute chat session with VZW. Here’s the scoop: Don’t give up. Be persistent and firm, yet polite.

The rep I chatted with had no idea how to allow me to keep the unlimited plan. His system was requiring a new 2GB plan to be chosen before he could activate my SIM.

Ultimately I had to send him links regarding the glitch and Verizon’s statements about allowing it, then have him ask supervisors and colleagues if they had information. He eventually found information on the glitch but said it was fixed before my order was placed. I mentioned that I had screen shots and e-mail receipts showing the date or the order and confirmation of my unlimited data plan. Suddenly, there was a way found for me to keep my plan and have my new phone activated.

I got the feeling that this was partly a case of reps not being aware of this issue, and partly supervisors with the power to help just waiting to see how determined the customer is about keeping the unlimited data. The ultimate solution did require a supervisor to step in and make the changes during activation.

One other thing. I see some people being made to wait days before the 2GB reverts back to unlimited. Moments after my phone was activated (while still in the chat session) I logged into my account and checked my plan. It showed 2GB. I informed the rep and he told me to refresh the page. I logged out and back in and it showed unlimited again, so I’m not sure why some people are having to wait so long.

In the end the rep said his entire team is now aware of the situation and how to handle it since he asked everyone for info while trying to help me. I don’t know how many various call and chat centers VZW has, but this is an issue of either successfully educating the rep you deal with or just going with trial and error of trying to get in touch with someone who has already dealt with it.

I hope this helps someone else. I put off upgrading for 3 years because of the plan change requirements. Maybe this whole thing will send a message to VZW that loyal customers are built with unlimited data. πŸ˜‰

Coming from a note 2 I was just going to swap my current sim into the note 3 & be on my way. How is everyone activating their phones?(online, using pre installed sim or customer service?). Really not in the mood to fight with Verizon today if my data gets changed to 2gb otherwise I’ll try to activate tomorrow or Saturday when I have more time.

    • jfaypm

if you need to have unlimited data available now, don’t do anything until you have some time to be on the phone with verizon reps. I read some comments of people removing the preinstalled sim card and replacing it with their current sim. I did not see those comments until after I activated with the phone while I was talking to a rep, and it changed my plan to 2GB. To remove the sim card you need to pull out there is a small groove on the part of the sim card that is visible that you can place your finger nail or some small to drag the sim card out. Again info was to late for me. Now I have to wait 3 business days for someone to change my data back to unlimited

  • Thi

Paperwork shows 2Gb in the slip that comes inside the package. Tried to secretly activating the Note 3 myself online and….Voila!!! 2gb pops up to show that I’m 4gb over limit!!!! Isn’t that crazy? I called and argued but the phone rep. just wouldn’t budge, and he refuse to receive my forwarded email as a proof. He kept insisting that his system shows that since the time of my order until now, it has always been 2Gb, and I was notified that Unlimited Data would be deleted from my account at the time of the order. We went back-n-forth for another 30 minutes before he put me on hold to go “discuss” with his boss. 15 minutes later he comes back and said he can restore my Unlimited Data….BUT….I will be subject to audit and they have the right to strip my Unlimited Data and put me back to 2Gb at the time. I was out of option at this moment, so I let him help. I mean, worst case I’ll have to fight all over again when the audit eventually comes.
Very frustrating to deal with Verizon rep. I’m starting to believe that Verizon is actually pulling a “bait & switch” trick on us this time.

  • Phillies3429

Got my Note 3 today…on paper contract it comes up 2GB plan! Hopefully they don’t give a hard time when I call.

  • 07aspenx

For those who ordered the note 3, check your orders online. I checked mine and it says there was an error. I’m on the phone with VZW and they said that the sim on my Galaxy Nexus is not compatible with the Note 3 and the only way to fix it is to cancel the current order and reorder it with a new sim card. I asked him if I would still be able to keep my unlimited and he said he’s not sure since it was glitch. He is calling his helpline.

    • Nathaniel_G

By not compatible do they mean the Note 3 uses a nano sim? If so you can just cut your micro sim from the Nexus.

  • Moto2Note

So I jumped on this on Monday, got the Moto X picked it up in store and kept my max data. Question I have is what do I with my buyer’s remorse once I got to see the Note 3? Any suggestions?

    • Iyvin Benjamin

You have 14 days to return or exchange the device, so if you fall under that you are in luck

      • Moto2Note

But if I return it and then pre-order the Note 3, won’t my new (Moto X) contract be voided, and a newer (Note 3) contact be written, which would then remove my max-data?

        • Iyvin Benjamin

That’s true, but what I meant is that when the note 3 come out would your 14 days be over?

          • Moto2Note

Right, I would be within the 14 day window; right now you can pre-order the Note-3, the website says it ships on 10/10. But my main question is: If I return my Moto X in-store, and then try to pre-order the Note-3, would I be stuck signing a NEW contract? A contract that would cause me to LOSE my max-data?

          • Iyvin Benjamin

You might lose your current plan, but it worth calling them and checking whether you would lose it or not. You can just go to the Verizon store on the 10th and exchange your phone

          • Moto2Note

I spoke to 3 different customer reps over the past day, and they all said the same thing:
When I return my Moto-X, that contract is voided, and my upgrade date goes back to what it was prior to last week (March 2013 was my old upgrade date). If I then tried to pre-order the Note 3, I’d be forced out of my unlimited data plan.
            Help!
            Any suggestions?

  • dishtestman

“We still aren’t sure why some are seeing cancellations on orders or with 2GB $30 plans in confirmation emails. All we know is that Verizon had a software issue that has been adjusted, yet are still willing to honor β€œapproved” orders.” – this did happen to us. I think it could be because we did an upgrade transfer from one phone to another instead of a straight upgrade. Rest assured, if you have your receipt from the original transaction and if you keep calling (and finally get a rep who can do investigative research)..you can get them to restore the unlimited plan (as I did).

    • Burbank

Agreed. The key part to all of this is getting a rep you can do investigative research.

  • Nick

Noticed this morning they changed my plan to 2GB. Called customer service and at first she didn’t know anything about the glitch. She put me on hold to look into it, and when she came back I was told they were going to switch my plan back to unlimited and that it could take 48-72 hours for the change to show on my verizon

  • GT Hulk Smash

Can you post the email. Verizon changed me to the 2GB and is refusing to honor it.

    • Chris Hannan

Keep calling back until you get a rep that will help you.

  • Diar

Nice and Smooth. Got my Droid Maxx today. Called in to CSR, explained the situation, forced him to talk to his manager just to be sure, activated phone, it switched to 2GB plan and then he switched it right back to unlimited. 15 minute call. Checked website, unlimited is still there, except they call it unlimited data now, now unlimited web and email. Excellent.

    • Chris Hannan

Ooh that makes me nervous. If there’s a distinction, I could see those with unlimited data having some kind of problem that unlimited web and email users won’t have in the future. 😐

  • Daniel Clifford

Update: They gave me back the unlimited. Took 23 hours from activation and a grand total of 2 phone calls.

  • truthful

I’m seriously hoping that in two years time Google will have launched their own wireless network and offer unlimited data as long as you purchase their phones. That would be amazing. I occasionally Google “Google Wireless Network” in hopes for some news regarding something.

    • M3D1T8R

      This. Yes, please.

  • brad0383

Received my Moto X last night. Activated with the included SIM online, never mentioned changing data plan. Worked flawlessly and still have my unlimited data. Thank you Verizon software glitch and Droid Life for reporting it!

  • frankkatz

Worked smoothly on my new Moto X. Still unlimited!

  • jrbmed08

So if the activation with the pre-installed sim card worked, I should be able to return my sim cutter to amazon, right? Is there any reason why one might need a sim cutter otherwise?

  • Consumer Watch dog

The way I read this “allowing those customers to retain their unlimited plans for the duration of their contract and receive their new device.” is once the contract ends, they lose unlimited data. Am I reading too deep.

    • jrbmed08

Could be, but I’m fed up enough with how expensive and locked down Verizon is compared to other carriers that I’d jump ship if that happens. Sprint and T-mobile now have 2 years to beef up their LTE networks before I leave.

    • M3D1T8R

I don’t read it like that. I think after the contract ends we will continue on month to month. Of course they could take away our unlimited any time if they wanted to p.off a lot of customers. I actually think it would be easier for them to take it away when we’re not in contact (that we specifically signed with Unlimited data). This quote seems to confirm that they won’t take it away at least for two years now. That seems like a big win to me.

  • Brett Seybert

Mark another tally in the mysteriously (and surprisingly) easy column. Got my Moto X last night, activated via MyVerizon with the pre-installed SIM, and was never prompted to select a new plan. Also, neither of my receipts (the one I received via email and the one that came in the box with the device) mentioned anything about either unlimited or 2gb, and both simply state “2 year contract renewal.” Fingers crossed that nothing changes when new cycle begins in 4 days.

Thanks to Droid Life for the tip and everyone who’s posted here for the shared experience.

    • Thksnow

I had a very similar experience. Used the pre-installed SIM on my son’s MotoX, charged the phone, and then ran thru the phone set-up (as much as we could do before activating). Then we did the activation via MyVerizon. There were some aspects of the activation process that didn’t match what was on the phone, but everything worked in the end, and we still have Unlimited Data, so we’re very happy about that. I must say that I was not too happy to find out the delivery of the phone required a signature, which required me to go to the FedEx place at 8PM last night and pick it up. Is it too much to ask for Verizon to put this information in their shipping notification email???? I haven’t had to sign for a package in years, so I never even thought about it until I got the “Unable to deliver” email.
Hopefully the activation of my Note 3 (to be shipped on 10 Oct), and my other Son’s IPhone5S (to be shipped on 20 Oct) will go as smoothly as the MotoX!

      • M3D1T8R

When I placed my order I clearly remember seeing “indirect signature required” at some point. Maybe during the shipping selection, maybe in ye tracking. I’m pretty sure Verizon always has required a signature. Good luck with your N3. Will be interesting o see if preorder devices go as smooth as most of our normal (Moto X, etc.) orders went.

  • Jay F

Update: Verizon just restored my unlimited data this morning from the 2gb plan. Took them a few days and a few phone calls but they eventually honored it. If there giving you issues, keep calling until you speak with someone who is knowledgeable about the glitch and the memo that was sent out.

  • droidify

My GF and I both upgraded this weekend and our receipts have unlimited data. When I activated the new sim it switched to 2gb on both our accounts. The GF called VZ and spoke to a supervisor who said that they wouldn’t honor it so she hung up to avoid confrontation. I called right back and told them about the error this weekend and that verizon had issued a statement online saying they would honor. He put me on hold, came back and said that he was told that as long as my order was placed on 9/29 or 9/30 they were honoring it and he fixed both of our accounts. So the moral of the story is, keep calling until you get a good rep and they will fix it. But be upfront and tell them that there was an error that allowed you to upgrade and that vz acknowledged the error and is honoring. The supervisor my GF spoke too said that she would have had to selected the 2gb plan or she couldn’t have completed the order. So apparently some reps know about the error and some don’t. Just keep calling until you find the right rep. In my case it was 2 calls.

  • truthful

I just wanted to update everyone here with my situation that happened to me yesterday. I got my phone in the mail yesterday. Opened it up and looked at the order receipt and it stated that my contract was now 2gb for 29.99. The receipt from the email pre-confirmation stated UNLIMITED 29.99. I took screen shots through out the entire process this happened. I also had screen shots from the conversation asking the Verizon Chat agent telling me I could keep my unlimited. I called yesterday and they tried to say that I couldn’t have unlimited as I updated and played stupid. Then I explained all the screen shots and they told me to go to the nearest Verizon store. I went to the nearest Verizon store which is an authorized dealer which they rep said I could go to. He couldn’t do anything for me. He called another rep and I had the same run around and they told me to go to a corporate store which is 20 miles away. I drove there walked in and the Verizon greeter said there is nothing she can do while I was showing her my evidence. Another salesperson said the same thing. So I went out into my car and called verizon again and this time VERY UPSET by the sound of my voice emphatically saying I just drove 20 miles and I have evidence I have a Chat ID session from your agent stating I could keep unlimited. I have the entire screen shot process. They then put me on hold briefly and honored the situation. I used the new sim card as I had an old bionic and upgraded to a S4. I wasn’t about to back down from this situation as being told by a Verizon agent online and a checkout process of stating you can maintain unlimited and then trying to change it is FRAUD. All I can say is the amount of stress and run around I had to deal with yesterday was worth it in the end. I’m unlimited.

    • M3D1T8R

Congrats. Good job not backing down.

  • Stephen Lucas

I pre-ordered a GN3 on my wife’s upgrade because my phone wasn’t eligible, I plan to switch the phone when received to my line, whats the safest and fastest way to do this without any problems? Has anyone upgraded this way without issue? Both lines are unlimited just one was capable of upgrade on Sat.

    • Sundeep S

Some users have reported simply using an existing sim on the new phone and activating the phone on verizonwireless.com. that may work just fine in your case.

      • Stephen Lucas

        Thanks for the response πŸ™‚

  • Daniel Flores

Ok…got mine last night as well. To avoid hassle, I just put my old SIM from my Gnex into my New G2. Works like a charm. Love the battery so far on this phone. I’d like to thank all those who made this possible:
The software Tech at Verizon for screwing up.
    Verizon for honoring their ‘glitch’
And MOST OF ALL the Droid-Life site and Kellex.

Very happy with Verizon at the moment. Without getting into too much detail. They have been fantastic through all this and other issues I’ve had recently. Plus now I got a company discount that lowered my bill from 222, to 177…awesome.

    • Sundeep S

Congrats Daniel. I remember you were very hesitant to pull the trigger a few days ago! i’m glad that you’ve taken a chance and it’s paid off!

  • Manhattan123

Ordered a Moto X on Saturday for $165, it arrived today and the receipt in the box confirmed my unlimited data plan remains in effect. Thank you Big Red. For deliciously screwing up.

    • M3D1T8R

      Me too. Awesome.

  • jmich

So, I got my phone today. Here’s a tip, if you don’t want to deal with the BS that I just went through, just swap out your sim card from old phone to new. I decided to activate the phone with the new sim card. When I went online just to make sure my unlimited data was there, it was rejected to 2gb. I called verizon immediately, spoke with the first guy who tried telling me something I wasn’t going to hear, so never let him get his statement out and forced my story on him, telling him that I have my reciept in hand, video’d my online transaction, and need to speak with someone who is higher up than him. He immediately back peddled, didn’t want to involve anyone higher up, put me on hold, told me to log back into verizon and check my data….UNLIMITED FOR THE WIN

    • mec

I activated the new sim and my unlimited was untouched. but before i did, i went on customer service’s chat and confirmed they were honoring.

  • Michael Valadez

Got my Moto X tonight. My receipt showed Unlimited data, and sure enough after the automated activation process, the Verizon website shows my new phone and unlimited data. Pretty awesome so far.

  • rww

Moving from Gnex to G2 and it didn’t work. My receipt showed unlimited, but the website wanted me to pick a new tiered plan. The call-in number seemed to work w/out demanding a plan change, but the phone wouldn’t activate. I swapped the SIM cards and it’s working great (and online it shows G2 and still says I’m unlimited).

  • Thksnow

Just picked up my new MotoX from FedEx (Verizon of course didn’t say anywhere that the shipment had to be signed for, which is very frustrating). Starting the activation process. The instructions say to call the automated number first, and then fully charge the phone before turning it to start the activation process. Is fully charging the phone really necessary? I don’t see why it would make a difference, and I don’t feel like waiting another 45 mins or so. Also, I see from many of the posts that folks have been going online to activate, not calling the number. Does this really make a difference? It sounds like the phone number is an automated process, not involving a rep at all.

    • jrbmed08

I was told in store that the current battery technology doesn’t require charging before using. However, take that with a grain of salt because it was a Verizon rep…

      • Jacwhite22

Have heard the same. I did not.

    • chris13417

Speaking from experience, do not call the number and do not do the online activation. I thought calling would be automated, but my call was directed to a sales rep so I hung up (didn’t want them to tell me that I was going to be switched to 2 gb). Tried online activation and when I put in my sim card ID# it tried to force me into a tiered plan. Luckily I ordered a nano sim card cutter when I ordered my moto x (coming from a GNex). Cut my sim from the GNex, popped it into the phone, turned it on and was activated in seconds. Still says unlimited on myverizon.com.

      • thksnow

So if you recommend not calling the phone number and not doing the online activation, how do you activate the phone?

        • Jacwhite22

Yep. I second that. I put my cut sim in….powered it up and was good to go.

        • chris13417

Just put the old sim in and turn the phone on. It will do the rest.

        • M3D1T8R

Yeah I was “upgrading” to a Moto X from a DNA so my sim wasn’t compatible with the Moto X’s smaller sim, which came pre-installed (I didn’t want to have to cut mine since I’ll be going back to the DNA, don’t want to have to use a converter). I was worried about being moved off Unlimited from the sim change, but it worked fine going online to my account and “upgrade device” and it already had my Moto X there ready to confirm.

If I had upgraded to a different new phone with a normal sim like my DNA I would have just swapped sim’s (like I did when I went from my Galaxy Nexus to the DNA a few months ago), and that’s all to it.

          • Jacwhite22

Why would you go back to the DNA?

          • M3D1T8R

Because the Moto X isn’t a big enough upgrade for me from the DNA. I want my next device to have 64GB+, or 32 at the very least. Other than that I really like the X. I may sell it and buy a dev edition (32GB) for $100 or so more, or maybe a Motomaker version with 32GB when/if it comes to Verizon. Or more likely keep going with my DNA until I see what’s coming next year. I really want 64GB+. The final decision maker was that the Moto X signal strength is ever so slightly worse than the DNA. They’re both much better than all the Samsung phones, but this was surprising because Motorola’s radios was one of the main things I was looking forward to in the X. Maybe because it’s a smaller device it doesn’t have quite as large antennae, I don’t know. Testing the Droid Maxx by comparison the Maxx did seem better, best of all actually. Finally, the DNA has been fantastic in just about every way again other than the 16GB limitation (only 11 usable, same as Moto X), so I have no big reason to upgrade now since there are not any good 64GB options for me currently. Hopefully Moto X next year..

      • jrbmed08

It never asked for my sim card ID (for my new Moto X). Just asked me to verify the order number and turn off my phone, and then it said I was activated. Checked to make sure unlimited was still there, and it was.

        • M3D1T8R

          Same.

    • M3D1T8R

Mine was at half charge when I got it, and I didn’t charge it. “Activation” online only took a few minutes (I definitely was not going to call in to activate) and I was all good. At no point was I prompted to change my data plan. Now, several hours later, my account still shows my new Moto X on my line, and still Unlimited data, and a contract end date of Sept. 30, 2015.

  • fireMJG

If any is having issues, I advise you to call the activation number provided in the box if your receipt states that you are supposed to keep your unlimited. Upgraded my wife’s RAZR and my GNex to a G2 and HTC ONE online… I was prompted to switch to 2gb for both lines… Before doing so, I called that activation number, told the lady I was having a problem with my activation and that it was prompting me to switch my data package. She said that if you upgrade, you have to switch. I told her Verizon had a promotion this weekend allowing unlimited customers to upgrade and keep their unlimited. She had no idea so she transferred me to online order support… I explained the exact thing to her, she pulled up my order and then put me on hold… Not even 2 minutes and she came back and said that they received a memo today from corporate that upgrades would be honored to the individuals who upgraded before the glitch fix. She stayed on the line while I activated the lines, told me that I would have to select the 2gb option, I did, she immediately switched us back to unlimited. Conversation was recorded and she assured me that nothing would change. My plan still says unlimited and that was at 4pm eastern time today.

I also am in the clear. 2 successful LG G2s activated! I used my old sim cards out of our nexus and s3. I’m also on a old alltel plan so i don’t have the unlimited.. it’s built into my plan.

  • jrbmed08

IT WORKED!!! Turned on my Moto X and went through the setup wizard, then logged onto My Verizon and did the “activate or switch device” thing. No calls required and no switching/cutting of the sim cards. I just turned it on with the preinstalled sim. And now My Verizon shows up with my phone on there and unlimited still intact! My receipt in the box also said unlimited. Thank you, Droid-Life!!!

    • M3D1T8R

Exactly the same situation here. Very happy with this.

  • ElecEngineer

I upgraded from G-nex to a G2 just inserted my old sim and turned it on. I did not call or go online to do anything. “MyVerizon” page shows the new G2 and unlimited data. πŸ™‚

  • Robert Kuhlman

Got my G2 in the mail this afternoon. Instead of going online to try to transfer phones I called in directly. I told them I bought the phone during an online glitch which Verizon had later said they would honor. She put me on hold for about 2 minutes and spoke to her supervisor because she didn’t know what I was talking about and he told her to honor it and I still have unlimited. Thank you VZW!

  • Maria Trippe

Got the G2 today, activated it (online) with it’s new sim card and my plan showed 2GB. So I called Verizon and the rep was very rude, said he had no idea what I was talking about, and said the email I received from Verizon saying to call and get the plan reverted back to unlimited was fraudulent. I hung up on him, called right back, and got a very sweet girl. I read her the email and she said “well if it says that, then I’ll try it.” She pulled up my account and said although she had never seen it before, mine still had an option of unlimited data. She made the change, I thanked her, then logged in and she had indeed put me back on unlimited. Bottom line, keep calling until someone helpful answers πŸ™‚

  • ElecEngineer

Everyone that that is having problems. My guess is that your current/old phones are 3G only. Am I right? An unlimited 3G plan is different in the verizon system then an unlimited 4G plan. So, the unlimited 3G plan is not compatible with a 4G phone. I upgraded my wife’s phone early just before they dropped the grandfathering. Even if this is the case they should still honor it. Who is upgrading from a 3G phone and having problems?

    • MC

Me. Yes, you are right. I have a Droid 2 and attempted to upgrade on Saturday, via the website. The Droid 2 is a 3G only phone. I have my receipt from that order that states I bought an unlimited email & web for smartphone plan. Beneath that, it states 4G Data Transport, 4G Internet Access and 4G Application access as well. However, while trying to upgrade, I get errors from every angle, on the 877#, the website activation methods, and going to the local VZW branch. All of them tell me I need to revert to the 2gig plan. Not sure what to do.

      • MC

NVM, contacted VZW online chat yesterday and saw that my new phone activated with unlimited 4G. Just use the online chat, people. Tech Support. Rochelle.

  • Hm….

This is BS!….I just received my phone and the plan switched backed to 2gb. Called Verizon they said they do not know about honoring the glitch and will not honor it.
Guess i’m stuck with 2gb and 2 year contract. what a bad business ethic…..

    • Daniel Flores

Oh Hell no…I would not take that. If you ordered during the glitch…Keep calling and complaining till you get someone who will honor it. I’ve read from others that it’s a hassle, but the kept escalating the call to someone higher till they got to someone who knew what they were doing and knew of the glitch orders.

    • Diar

No, just return the phone within 14 days and go back to your previous phone and plan.

      • Joseph A. Yager

Success for me – are you sure you aren’t trolling?

        • Diar

lol…no. As you see I added another reply above giving advice on fighting.

          • Joseph A. Yager

Ha, sorry – meant for that to be for Hm, I misread!

    • Diar

But I would really try again. Get copies of your order receipt which showed unlimited data, any screenshots you took of the order, and your confirmation e-mail which may have also showed unlimited data. E-mail customer support or call Verizon and battle it out.

  • Chad Baker

I just received my new phone today and the unlimited is still intact …
    woooooooop wooooooooop

  • Daniel Flores

Glad that people are posting their experience here…I will do the same when I get home and activate mine. I’m just gonna put my Gnex SIM in my new G2.

Any chance this glitch happens again in 2 years? Now that’d be the coolest. But I’m sure I’ll be happy with the G2 for the next 2-3 years.

  • Diar

NIRVANA!! After canceling my order on Monday because a phone CSR said I wouldn’t be able to keep unlimited data (on the same day Verizon said upgraders could) and then after a few back and forths with customer support by e-mail, I just got an e-mail saying my canceled order has been reinstated, the order has been completed, but I don’t yet have a tracking number because the order hasn’t shipped. The e-mail also said “a request” will be made to add unlimited data when the device is activated. I don’t like that “a request” language but I’ll triple-check before I activate the phone anyway and have the e-mail transcripts and online receipt showing unlimited for back-up. If there are shenanigans, I’ll send it back. But it appears Verizon is serious about letting folks have it so I don’t anticipate a problem.

It looks like a nice Droid Maxx w/unlimited is headed my way!!! (Though I was seriously contemplating the Galaxy Note 3 if they let me resubmit the order but I’m not arguing over that.)

So my advice: never, ever, EVER listen to a CSR for any reason about anything except the most basic aspects of your account. It is astonishing how little they know. Also, anyone who upgraded over this past weekend and got an e-mail confirmation but are having issues keeping unlimited, keep fighting until you reach reasonable folks.

Verizon gets major props for this (even as folks theorize they’re working some unseen angle). I don’t know if this quite makes up for the Galaxy Nexus fiasco, but they’ve earned my respect and loyalty for these next two years.

    • Diar

They just sent a confirmation which shows 2GB data but again the rep I’m working with said it’ll be changed to unlimited so I’m not worried……yet.

  • William Nadeau

Received mine in the mail today:

Came with a sim card pre-installed, as well as another simcard with NFC in it. The receipt that came with my phone showed unlimited data, even though my online order confirmation did not

I went online to activate, the number from the activation was for the non-preinstalled SIM card, so I popped that one out and put it in. Activated online, didn’t ask anything, and I’m up and running

    • Joseph A. Yager

I wonder if this means they’ve figured it out on their end, or if it’s just luck of the draw. Still waiting on my G2 to show up today, so this is good to know!

      • William Nadeau

I got the G2 as well, hoping a lot of devs were able to take advantage of this too! Although, so far I don’t mind the ui…. a little overbearing coming from AOSP, but I may be able to get used to it

        • Joseph A. Yager

I’m excited to try out the UI for a while before I think about rooting and ROMing – though it’s usually only a matter of time before I do so. I do see there are a few ROMs available on XDA, so here’s hoping it catches on.

          • William Nadeau

I used scotts cleanrom when I first got my rezound, he had one of the first roms available for it. Basically cuts out all the verizon crap, it was great!

  • kevinh52

Just got it…,,, so far so good…I cut my SIM card that came out of GNEX and put in MotoX.
Just didn’t want to chance the other SIM.. But others have had no problems with using the SIM thats preinstalled.
Account shows new phone, contract date(2015) and still unlimited.

    • chris13417

So did you just put the sim in and turn on the phone to activate or did you call the number like the instructions say to do?

      • kevinh52

Yeah,, Just put old SIM in and Powered on. Hit next a couple of times… Then it said “Phone activated Your New number is ######” Which was my correct number. Able to make calls and hit the internet…

        • chris13417

Perfect….looking forward to doing the same tonight once my cutter is delivered. I tried just powering on the phone with the sim it came with but it didn’t work. Online activation tried to make me switch plans. I wonder if i should factory reset the phone now before putting in my old sim.

          • kevinh52

Not sure how you would reset without getting pass the setup wizard at first power on..Wish you luck in whatever way you do it.. Keep all of us posted..

    • Timrob

Got my moto x a couple hours ago. Left the sim that came in it in the phone. Activated it on line. NO issues. Receipt says I have unlimited. Contract end 9/30/15. Same thing on my verizon. No worries, happened the way it was supposed to.

  • rww

Thanks to everyone who’s posting their real-time experiences here. I’ve been monitoring it for the past two days. My phone was just delivered to my home, according to my wife. Fingers crossed…

  • RedXander

As a followup, I got my Moto X this morning. New SIM card was already in the phone. Activated it online without ever needing to switch to a new data plan.

    • JoeTi

Sweet! Hope I get the same result. I need to pick mine up at FedEx. I will try the online activation and post back the result.

      • JoeTi

I just got my new phone, follow the instructions on the paperwork and activated it as instructed. The unlimited data is intact. Also, if felt really good seeing unlimited email and web on the paperwork that came with the phone. Thank you VZW for your little glitch.

  • Daniel Clifford

They are trying to get rid of mine. Trying to get the plan changed.

    • kevinh52

What? How? . Is your new phone already working and activated. Dont let them.

      • Daniel Clifford

Yup. Activated already. Said it should be all set to keep. When I checked online it now shows I am 1.5GB over my 2GB limit. Unlimited is nowhere in sight.
Of course they all act clueless as to that there was a glitch over the weekend. They also say they have received nothing from Verizon about honoring such purchases.

        • kevinh52

Sorry to hear that. After i got done,, online still showed unlimited..
Just keep calling them,, get it back… Hope you do..

  • sampleja

I activated mine last night. The automatic activation when booting the phone wouldn’t work and I couldn’t get through on another phone. So I initiated the activation from the verizonwireless.com site through the β€œActivate or Switch Device” link. It was completely
automated and it never even asked me about keeping or switching plans. I used
the new SIM and it my account still shows Unlimited this morning.

    • chris13417

I tried the same method online, however after I put the sim ID# in it prompted me that I need to switch to a new data plan. My sim cutter will be delivered today so hopefully using my old sim will be the answer.

      • sampleja

I was ready to cancel the process the second I saw anything about data plans and cut mine also. I ended up being surprised the activation was so quick and that plans were never brought up. – Good Luck

    • jrbmed08

Really good to know – I was planning on doing the online activation and just deciding whether to try activating it on the new sim vs cutting. Guess I’ll be waiting for the sim cutter to arrive based on the other replies.

      • jrbmed08

Update: This worked perfectly for me. Used the pre-installed sim and activated online.

  • Daniel Flores

Hoping to hear what everyone’s experience is today after getting their device. I won’t be home till tonight to try to activate mine. But, I’m still leaning towards just using the same SIM.

    • Jay F

Definitely use your same sim. I Activated my phone with the new sim and it took over an hour. I called vzw and the system automatically makes you choose a tier data plan. He stated that he received the memo about honoring the upgrade but there is no way for the rep to get around so they will have to escalate. I got knocked to a 2G plan πŸ™ hopefully for not too long, but save yourself the hassle.

    • Jacwhite22

I already cut my sim down and put it back in my galaxy nexus to make sure it works……I will be moving it over to the new device.

  • mendy817

So first I went to the store yesterday and had a giant argument with the assistant manager, who basically called me a liar and told me I’m just “trying to take advantage of the system.” It wasn’t pretty.

Then I called customer service, was forwarded to a supervisor, who told me it was just a glitch and there’s nothing that can be done. I was asked to forward my email confirmation, which I did. She then ensured me that I would receive a call from HER supervisor within 24-48 hours. I called back twice yesterday, with no luck each time.

I called again this morning, still no luck. Then one more time this afternoon and the woman who I talked to this time was MUCH nicer, left to speak to her manager, came back, and said that I was absolutely right and Verizon messed up. She ensured me that I could go pick up the phone, sign whatever contract they gave me, and she would call me back later today and reset the data to unlimited. I asked her to give me something in writing that says that, which she did via text message.

Went to the store, picked up the phone, signed the contract (which actually stated “unlimited data”), the Verizon rep actually called back later in the day, and all is good!

If they’re still giving you a hard time, just keep bugging them. They’ll eventually give in.

    • Suralin

Glad to hear you managed to get yours. This entire episode just shows that there’s some internal miscommunication going on.

    • Mario

Hey buddy I have already called Verizon 5 times without any luck.. Any chance you can provide me with the e-mail or the phone of the person you spoke to ?

      • mendy817

unfortunately I don’t have a phone number since they don’t have direct numbers in the call center :

  • Jacwhite22

Yeah……from what I’m reading……no chance in hell I am using the SIM they are sending me to activate…..I will be cutting down the one I have and go that route…..

    • kevinh52

+1– Just what you said.. Snowballs chance in Hell.. — I have a cutter ready to go tomorrow. Fingers Crossed…

    • jrbmed08

Won’t Verizon then charge us the full retail price if we don’t activate the phone their way?

      • Jacwhite22

My understanding is only if you don’t activate it on your account. Don’t have to do it a certain way.

        • jrbmed08

Good to know. Phone is due to arrive today, so we’ll see what happens.

      • Joseph A. Yager

Shouldn’t matter as long as your contract says unlimited, that’s where it counts. Normally it would have switched to a tiered plan when ordering the phone. You could have chosen to use an old SIM that route, as well, I would think.

  • Justin Fosco

I pre-ordered the note 3 and I’m hoping they still honor this when it arrives…I’m nervous. I got the email showing I’m still on unlimited and I’m using my SIM card from my current note 2. Crossing my fingers they don’t cancel before the 10th…

  • David

After an hour on the phone, I’m left with emailing a supervisor the email receipt I got from Verizon. I also emailed him 3 articles regarding the glitch at Verizon. It really sounds like they are trying to either wear people down or they really have communication issues internally. I’m not normally that assertive, but since I have the paperwork that says unlimited data and they have my money, I refuse to accept anything other than that. The supervisor says he’ll get back to me within 24 hours. We’ll see.

    • Mario

Hey David, I am having the same issue, I just activated my phone and was placed on the 2GB data.. can you send me the e-mail of the surpervisor you got? I have been on phone with verizon for 1 hour without any luck.. Thank you

  • darryldroid

Don’t go to the store in the mall in Montebello, CA. Idiot mgr was rude and short and acted like Verizon doesn’t make mistakes.

  • Andrew Davis

The language of Verizon’s statement scares me. “Retain unlimited plans through the duration of their contract.”……So will I lose grandfather status as soon as my new contract is up?

My old contact was signed a long time ago. I’m worried about signing this new one and losing unlimited the second it’s up. My Moto X is coming and I want to know what I should do when I get it.

    • jrbmed08

The way I see it, if VZW forces us off in 2 years, that’s 2 more years for another carrier to improve their LTE network (which is the only reason I haven’t jumped ship yet – VZW still has the most LTE coverage). Or I’ll go to Straight Talk.

    • Jacwhite22

They could kick you off tomorrow if they would like. There is nothing guaranteeing you unlimited data as it is.

  • Brian Tibbetts

Just to chime in: I called to active my new G2 and he told me it wasn’t possible for him to do it, blah blah blah. Hung up, put my old sim card in from my Gnex, and it activated. Online, it now shows my G2 as my phone, and with unlimited. Not sure if this will be a headache down the road, but for now it’s working!

    • William Nadeau

I guess worst case I can cut my rezound sim card and try that, but I noticed on my shipping confirmation it says “NFC SIM”.

Does that mean if I don’t use that SIM card I won’t have NFC? (not that I would probably ever use it anyway)

      • Maria Trippe

I asked the chat rep if I could use my old sim card out of my GNex and he said it would work fine in the G2, I just wouldn’t be able to use ISIS mobile wallet. But you never know if you get someone knowledgeable or not.

        • William Nadeau

Fine with me, I don’t want isis!

    • chris13417

Just tried to activate my Moto x with the sim they sent. I thought it would be a completely automated process and when it tried to connect me to a representative I hung up because I didn’t want him to switch me to 2gb. I tried to activate online with myverizon, entered the new sim number and it produced a list of tiered data plans i’d have to choose from. My nano sim cutter will be delivered tomorrow so hopefully popping my Gnex sim in will work.

Did you just put the sim in and then turn the phone on to activate?

  • William Nadeau

Still nervous about the wide array of answers people have been getting. Really feel bad for the people that were completely turned down while others obviously had no problem at all. My phone will be delivered to my house tomorrow, and I’m dreading πŸ™ I’m hoping the receipt that comes with the phone will state unlimited data. I stupidly didn’t take a screenshot of the checkout process, but my receipt shows a “contract renewal”.

Did the people that received their phone receipt showing unlimited data also have it shown on their order confirmation e-mail? ALSO, would it be worth getting in chat with verizon tonight and seeing if they can put a “note” on my account like they have others? with the support being all over the place I don’t even know if its worth it

    • jrbmed08

My phone is due tomorrow, but I’m with you in feeling a little nervous about what I’ll see. My order confirmation also says nothing about data, but I did have the foresight to grab a screenshot while I was ordering, so hopefully I have a leg to stand on if they try to take it away.

    • Chris Hannan

You didn’t get an email confirmation? I did, and it shows unlimited on there.

      • William Nadeau

I got an email confirmation, but this is all it says:

Plan DetailsMonthly Line Access: LINE ACCESS W/TEXT $9.99 0711-$9.99
        One-time Activation Fee:
(charge and credit appears on first bill)FREE
        Contract Renewal: 2-year contract

        • Chris Hannan

I got all this on mine.

          • Chris Hannan

            Uh oh. πŸ˜›

You should be fine though. I mean, Verizon said they’d honor the upgrades, so even if it’s removed from your account, someone should add it back if you contact them about it.

          • William Nadeau

Hopefully “Verizon” said it. Not that I don’t trust the internet…. but we’ve yet to see an actual statement from Verizon, and some people have been flat out turned down

          • ToddAwesome

Got the same thing here, did you happen to order yours Saturday night? At that point the online system was so broke it just had a page for “current” and “new” plans, both said Unlimited, so I pulled the trigger. I noticed on Sunday there was actually a page that let you select Unlimited as an option. I’m guessing we’re fine, maybe, who knows.

          • William Nadeau

I saw the rss feed Saturday night, added it to my cart and was all ready to go, but chickened out. Checked back later Sunday afternoon and it was still there, so I figured it couldn’t be a glitch and ordered

          • ToddAwesome

Oh, and it also listed my new Unlimited plan as costing $26.99. Ok, suuuuuure.

          • jrbmed08

If you have a work discount, it’s reflected in the price there. Mine came up as $23.99.

          • ToddAwesome

Haha, I always forget about that silly discount!!

        • jrbmed08

Got the same, but hoping the screenshot and this page is enough leverage.

    • paradyme

      Yes..

  • Maria Trippe

Just got the following email from Verizon:
    Dear Valued Customer,
Your order has been completed but a tracking number has not yet been
assigned. You will receive an email with your tracking information once the
package ships. We apologize for the delay.

***Please note that your order is being processed with the 2 GB data package
for $30/month due to system limitations. Once you receive and activate your
equipment, a followup will be done on your account to reapply the $29.99/month
unlimited data feature as per your order confirmation.***

Thank you for using Verizon Wireless products and services. We appreciate your business.
    Sincerely,
    Justin
    Verizon Wireless Internet Order Center

    • Jacwhite22

I’d be scared as hell to activate that thing. I got $20 says you have a hell of a time getting it back.

      • Maria Trippe

Yeah I know what you mean. I’m hoping that mine comes with a receipt like other posters have reported that reflects unlimited data.

      • Craig Rohwer

Just talked to Rich (another guy), and he confirmed the process as accept under 2GB limitation, call the 866-338-7390 number after activating the device, and have the plan reverted to the unlimited data. That’s what I’m doing, and I believe it’ll work.

        Thanks for $20 πŸ˜‰

    • Craig Rohwer

I’m in the same boat, hoping because I accept the T&C’s with the 2GB (due to system limitations) they won’t screw it up. The email says they won’t, but doesn’t make me any less nervous.

    • Nathaniel_G

      What phone did you order?

      • Maria Trippe

        G2

  • Thksnow

The MotoX I ordered arrives tomorrow. The phone it replaces is a 3G Droid Incredible 2. I’ve seen talk about cutting SIM cards in other posts and using them in their new phone, but from what I’ve read there is no SIM card in a 3G phone, so I have to use the new SIM that is coming with the phone. Can anyone confirm? Thanks.

    • Guy

Correct… the 3G phones don’t have a Sim, you’ll need to get one to use the phone.

  • Suralin

I just got my device. Receipt clearly states “Email & Web Unlimited $29.99” on the receipt that came in the package. I’ve already went through the automated phone activation part. I’m just waiting for the phone to charge to 100% before I power it up. For the Moto-X, the nanosim is already inside the phone (fyi for those that didn’t know).

    • Jacwhite22

Yes. You can just take the one out of your old device and use that though…….I am debating which to do. Keep us posted reg your data.

      • Suralin

Activated. I have service and it’s downloading my data. I’m looking at My Verizon, it still says I have Unlimited Data. Looks like a success, although I’m going to check again tomorrow. When I click on Change Plans and Data, it is saying their records show my device hasn’t been activated.

Edit: And this is with the nanosim they shipped me.

        • Thomas Ng

Great news! I’m going to try and fulfill my in store pick up tonight. When I chatted with an online rep, she told me the store would just charge my card and I would be out. No need to discuss about my plans. We will see how that goes…

          • optimus

did in store pickup today. the in store system is apparently completely different then the online (ship to home) system, so when you go in store they have to re enter all your plan info to activate and charge you. the store couldnt keep my unlimited no matter what so i called verizon customer service while in store and the guy was aware of the glitch and swithced me back to unlimited once my phone was activated. checked my verizon and it looks good. i will check my account again next week before the 14 day return period ends

        • Joseph A. Yager

Appreciate this update. This whole SIM thing seems silly, so hopefully this is how it will work out for everyone

          • Suralin

Yep. And icing on the cake, my friend at Verizon checked my account and was amazed it hadn’t changed. πŸ˜€ Congrats to everyone that got this to work.

  • da Moose

I have a chat session that I just finish and the rep stated ” We received a email this morning from management stating , that Verizon is going to honor all orders that toke place during the glitch and that unlimited data WILL carry over to the new phone” I have a copy of my chat session. My order is still intact and so is my plan. I hope this helps. If they tell you otherwise, take it to management. Make sure you have a copy of your receipt and chat sessions.

    • WOOHOO!

      AWESOMESAUCE!

      • rmh5280

Can you post the chat session?

    • Suralin

Do you know if the receipt or confirmation email should actually say unlimited data on it?

      • da Moose

My receipt just states that my new phones will have my current plan and yes it’s says unlimited data.

        • Suralin

Well, that doesn’t bode well for me. Attached: Left is email, right is the receipt on MyVerizon. πŸ™

          • Da Moose

Was that in store ? Mine was done online. But I have not received my new phones.

          • Suralin

            No, I did it online.

          • Da Moose

My receipt looks just like the one endgaget posted.

          • Suralin

I got my package just now and I have the phone plugged in. The receipt that came with the package has “EMail & Web Unlimited $29.99” in the features section.

          • Da Moose

            @Suralin, that’s great news !

          • Joseph A. Yager

Duh, ignore my other comment! This is great news and I see you’ve with the new SIM, too. Great news for sure!

          • Joseph A. Yager

Mine says the same thing, but my wife’s phone did clearly state that it will keep unlimited data. I think since it doesn’t say anything about moving to a new plan we’re okay.

          • jrbmed08

My receipt and order also look like yours, but I took a screenshot of the order page before I hit “continue to cart” to finalize it, and it clearly has the device name and unlimited. Hopefully I can use that as backup if they give me crap.

          • Suralin

The receipt in the package listed “Email & Web Unlimited” clearly in the Features section. The way I see it, if it doesn’t say your plan has changed on the confirmation e-mail or MyVerizon document, you have a pretty decent case.

          • jrbmed08

Here’s hoping my receipt says that when it comes tomorrow!

          • jrbmed08

Well, neither the confirmation email nor the my verizon document show a data plan at all with mine. However, my current plan is listed as unlimited and a contract end date in 2015. And it seems to have worked for you – so really I just have to be patient until tomorrow and see what my receipt says before I freak out.

  • tommyj2062

Just received my new LG G2 popped in my old sim and it’s active with my unlimited data plan still in place. It also said unlimited data on the receipt that came with it in the box.

  • mthr1

So Verizon is only going to grant unlimited data for the duration of the contract, given their quoted statement? What happens after the contract ends…they automatically switch you over to one of the tiered plans?

    • Suralin

Yeah… semantics, huh? Although changing your plan would involve a new contract, no? Otherwise, you’re month-to-month and free to leave. I was planning on going to T-Mobile at the end of this year anyhow until this glitch came up.

      • Scott

Same here, that gives T-Mobile another two years to beef up their network. Heck, maybe Big Red will get management that is customer service oriented in two years.

  • peezwizz

I went to voice my concerns with a Verizon Sales Rep this morning and she told me that Verizon would NOT be honoring those who upgraded during the glitch, and that they would be switched to a tiered plan when they go to activate the phone… has anyone encountered this or can confirm it to be a lie?

    • Jacwhite22

Just let it go. I think it’s been heavily advertized the reps are clueless and have no idea really

      • peezwizz

Yeah I gave up. I’m not a huge data user anyways but it’s always nice to have the peace of mind.

I got on the phone with customer support with someone just asking why Verizon is honoring the lucky ones, and he couldn’t give me an answer until he got an email from someone saying the same thing that the chat rep told me, that those who upgraded would be tiered.

I’m not really upset I lost it (I was well aware I was going to). I just feel completely cheated that others saved 600+ dollars getting a new phone and retaining it.

    • dcesq06

I called Verizon last night and was told that I could keep my unlimited data and that she would note my account. However, when I went this morning to pick up my G2 at the store, they refused to do it and said the rep I spoke with made a mistake. The store manager showed me an email from two levels up quoting the droid life article and saying that it was incorrect. Upon leaving the store (without my new G2), I called customer service and I spent an hour arguing with a supervisor. He admitted that there was an error in the system, but said that no matter what I would have to go to a tiered data plan.

      • peezwizz

Yeah they don messed up. I’m so pissed (jealous) that Verizon let this happen I think I might return my device, go back to the gnex with unlimited and leave it streaming 24/7

      • Sundeep S

Have you placed your order when the glitch was on?

  • RonMoses

I wonder if there’s any connection between this and the fact that my phone (with grandfathered unlimited data) has no mobile data connection this morning?

    • Suralin

Most likely not. Verizon’s support feed is going crazy with people having data issues.

      • RonMoses

It wasn’t. Thanks for the reply!

  • makewayhomer

So when I get my phone in the mail, can I sell it as new? Do I need to activate it or anything? or do I need to activate it on my account and then sell it? basically how do we sell a phone that was just purchased?

    • socarwolverine

I believe you still have to activate it to accept the terms and conditions on the account or else they charge you the full price of the phone.

      • Adartilth

        Correct

  • Jacwhite22

Am I the only one that is still thinking about cutting my SIM instead of using the one they sent because I am worried they are somehow going to screw me and switch it? Also….I ordered the X but halfway had buyers remorse……Spec wise feel like the LG G2 is a better phone or should have gone Note 3……Then again…..I am wondering if they will honor it on the preorders……Guessing if I try to exchange it they will mess with my plan and screw me…..anyone with any insight?

    • Steve

cut it, i did and bought an adapter to switch between phones..

      • Suralin

Can you give a link to the adapter you’ve chosen?

        • Eric Soriano

I use a Noosy, search for it on Amazon or ebay. Switched to a Nano SIM and used the adapter to use in an HTC One.

    • jrbmed08

I ordered a sim cutter too, just in case.

  • peezwizz

I upgraded last wednesday and lost unlimited…. what a kick in the beans :/

  • Jeff

All I see is quotes on different sites. Does anyone have anything official from Verizon?

    • Suralin

I’ve been keeping an eye on various verizon new sites and twitter feeds. The twitter feeds are definitely ignoring the unlimited data issue that occurred over the weekend.

      • Jeff

I just want something more official. This way if something calls through like it usually does at Verizon you have something to backup comments.

  • Dylan

Drat. I was out of town camping last weekend.
I’m ready to leave my GNex behind but I haven’t found a phone I’d want to spend
full price on yet. I’d feel less guilty just settling on a Maxx if I was paying
a subsidized price and getting my unlimited contract extended for 2 years.

  • David Tyler

Maybe it was best to place your orders through best buy for in store pick up. When I went to pick up my htc one, there was no questions asked. I was a bit nervous so I told her that my order stated that I would keep unlimited. The rep then told me whatever I did online is what I would get. She didnt have the power to change anything. She activated the phone and I was out.

  • Ray

I share the sentiment of the others about it not being an “official statement” I mean if they press back and cancel or push me to teired, I dont really have any ground to stand on to push back. “Oh yeah, well Droid-life said you would let me keep it!” sounds kind of weak.

    • Ray

Don’t get me wrong… I am cautiously optimistic. My Moto X arrives today and I will see what happens. I did not get a confirmation email or anything after the purchase. My fingers are crossed.

      • Suralin

I hope you get it. The lack of a confirmation email will put you at a disadvantage if something goes wrong.

    • Suralin

Yeah, but other sites have picked it up and some aren’t mention Droid-Life as their source. You can probably get away with pointing out CNET’s article instead of Droid-Life.

    • Steve

did you print your receipt and order #? Mine has unlimited clearly stated.

  • donkeykong85

verizon needs a nexus and unlimited data or i will always think they are terrible. sorry i am stuck with them for now. keeping my gnex at this point – just do not think there is anything better in the last 2 years except nexus 4 which of course did not come to vrzn.

    • Steve

Nexus on Verizon is not what its cracked up to be.

  • fitzgerald52

Even though I always rock Android, I bought an iPhone 5s for another phone on my plan. It’s on backorder but hopefully they honor the unlimited as I do have an email that shows me keeping it after buying the phone at discount.

    • Chris Hannan

Kinda wishing I bought an HTC One or Droid MAXX now. Still waiting for my 16GB white 5S order to go through. It’s supposed to ship by the 14th.

  • cwperkins1985

I ordered an iPhone 5c for my wife, and a separate order for a Moto X for myself. The iPhone was shipped no problem with unlimited data and will arrive tomorrow. I received an email from Verizon yesterday, saying to call about the Moto X order. The rep told me I would have to pick a tiered data plan for the X and they could not switch it to unlimited, even after complaining to a supervisor that the order went through with unlimited. I told them to canceled and bought a Galaxy S3 off eBay last night.

I’m getting really sick of Verizon! At least I got the iPhone for the wifey

    • Suralin

You said you placed a separate order. Did you do them at the same time?

      • cwperkins1985

I ordered the iPhone first on Saturday at 1130 pm to see if it would work, and after it did I ordered the X for myself 7 minutes later.

        • Sundeep S

Did you get an email confirmation indicating that you will have the unlimited plan with your new device? if you did, i think you should escalate it to someone higher up with the email confirmation.

  • M3D1T8R

Maybe it’s just because I like taking risks, but I went ahead and did this Sunday early AM, despite having two other basic phone lines on my account I could have used that method to upgrade with, just to save the hassle of that I first transferred one of those upgrades to my (Unl) line, then put in my order, to be shipped to me. Guess my gamble paid off, as tracking shows my Moto X on schedule for Wednesday delivery! Thanks Droid Life!

  • heyyo

I think there may be difference between “approved” and “placed” orders. I placed my htc one order sunday afternoon while the glitch was up and got an order confirmation with no info about data and then monday morning I got another order confirmation that it’s 2gb data with a different internet order number and all. I also got an email quickly after the first confirmation that the order is in queue to be processed. The internet order number tracking only works for the first “glitch order.” I called them this afternoon and they confirmed that it’s 2gb and said I can send it back when I get it but this was before verizon made the announcement. Now I’m worried that my order wasn’t “approved” in time….

  • Sundeep S

I actually want to go to a verizon store and see if they would fulfill my pending order even though I didn’t opt for an in-store pickup. but then again, reading from other reviews here, i’m afraid that some idiot at the store may decide to cancel my order on their system to prove it to me that unlimited plans are no longer offered! I’ll wait for my iphone 5s and not mess with the order i guess.

    • Chris Hannan

Yeah I’m almost wishing my 5S would take even longer to get here, since the longer it takes, the later my contract renewal will take, and the longer I’m “guaranteed” unlimited data.

  • outgoingbot

Bahahaha!! Cant wait to read these comments. Soo many pussies afraid to click an OK button. LOL

    • frankbean

      haha thats just wrong.

  • spark

“retain their unlimited plans for the duration of their contract and receive their new device.”

Am I the only one that read that as “we will remove your unlimited data soon as your 2 year contract is over”?

    • primarchlion

That might be true. But that also might be longer than people that are going month to month at the moment.

    • Sundeep S

I think it means that if verizon should decide to end Unlimited plans for good within the next two years, these users will still be able to keep it until the end of contract…

    • Tim242

Did you miss the last sentence/

  • Cody

Anyone else feel like they’re somehow plotting something even more evil than normal with this tactic?

    • Tim242

No. Take that tin foil hat off.

      • Cody

This is how I imagine their corporate hq is run.

        • David

          YES! That’s fantastic!

  • Thomas Ng

So did anyone have any luck when going in a store to pick up your order today?

  • wellhayhay

I wonder if this “glitch” was really a test to see how many people would stay/come back.

  • jon

    Verizon can go F-themselves

    • Tim242

I guess you didn’t get in on the fun? Don’t be mad bro

      • jon

I did but when I called to confirm the order on Sunday morning the customer service rep said he would look into what was going on. He said he’d call me tomorrow morning at 7AM with an update but basically right after he got off the phone with me canceled my order. Now they won’t honor the purchases.

        • Tim242

I would escalate that all day, until they honor it.

          • jon

I spoke to a manager… they said they can’t do anything. Got any other suggestions?

          • Tim242

I would call back and escalate even further up. There are many levels. I would even go to the store and show them this statement and see if they will honor it. Maybe if they are understanding, they will contact online sales to correct it. You may try calling them first. The number is (866) 338-7390. Have your preorder confirmation and order numbers ready.

          • jon

Thanks, looks like they’re closed for the night. Will try again tomorrow.

          • Sundeep S

They shouldn’t have cancelled your order without your authorization (unless the order go thru or something). keep calling back until you find a reasonable manager. Sorry, I’d be pissed like crazy too if this happened to me.

          • David

Call back. Talk to someone else. Insist on talking to a supervisor. If you have the receipt stating unlimited data, refuse to accept anything else. There seems to be so much variety depending on who you talk to.

  • Lee McLaurin

I’d like to start by thanking God, through whom all things are possible, I’d also like to thank the fans, for without you I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’d also like to thank the Academy, just because. Finally, I’d like to thank Droid-Life, for without you this never would have been possible. Thank, you. thank you so much….(tears).

    • Tim242

I’m not sure where I fit in that list, but you are welcome.

  • jon

Are they releasing an official statement about this?

  • jon

Why is it that when I call to find out what’s the deal with my order from the weekend that they canceled no one at Verizon knows what they heck they’re doing?? They don’t know that they’re honoring purchases from the weekend?? What gives?

    • Suralin

There isn’t an official statement. All we have is what VZW sent Droid-Life, but there is no statement anywhere. Any news articles about this are all referencing Droid-Life as their source. We have to sit tight and get an official statement. I have a friend who works in CSR so hopefully they can provide me some info tomorrow when they get to work.

      • Chris Hannan

It’s tomorrow. Don’t forget to let us know.

    • JAg1208

      Same here

    • Steve

did you print your receipt? did you keep your order #? if so whats the problem?

  • pstu

    D.L. , Kellex !! Thank you !! I’ve had droid incredible almsot 4yrs now. Note 3
on the way ..wish the One Max and Nexus 5 were out and on vzw when this happend but
I am one happy mofo now !

    • jdroid

      Your note 3 is shipping?

      • pstu

        Yes

  • StevenB

Upgraded a friend’s son’s phone last month at Best Buy using her upgrade
(from a unlimited line) His line was, and still is 2GB, her line was,
and still is unlimited. It’s been 4 weeks and a billing cycle and
account still shows unlimited. (not that she goes over 2GB herself
anyway) I thought for sure that when the new bill came out, it would
change, but no. This “glitch” may have been around for longer than
    anyone thinks.
Interesting to note that the Verizon site was forcing a change, but later that day when I did it at BB (they were cheaper), it went through keeping the unlimited data.

  • [A]dri[A]n

What? Verizon is doing something for the customers? That is definitely new…

  • I just shipped my phone!

  • s0uth

    awesome!!! thank you verizon!

    come to me note 3!

  • Craig

Boom! I’m impressed with Verizon for doing the right thing. They have earned my business for another two years and I can’t wait to activate my Moto X on Wednesday!

    • soccerburn55

      Same here.

    • Craig

Big thanks go to Kellen and Droid-Life as well. I would have missed this if not for the site.

      • jrbmed08

For real! Thanks, guys! I had my heart set on the Nexus 5 and was just coming to terms with the fact that it probably won’t have radios for verizon’s network. On Sunday morning I decided to google “keep unlimited data on verizon” to figure out how I can dump my battery hog GNex, stay on unlimited, and pay as little as possible. I had no idea what I would find, and I really can’t believe my luck for starting my search on the same weekend that Droid-Life posted this. Might be time to go buy some powerball tickets…

  • Matthew Yourchisin

Just got my shipping notification for my S4, order was placed Saturday. Yea… I did a littlehappy dance …. In my pants…

  • RaptorOO7

I have to say I am surprised and please by their decision. For those lucky bums congrats, for those like me who lost unlimited a while ago due to modems and other mobile device consolidation its a bummer to not have it any more.

  • Jason Parr

So glad I jumped on that one! Note 3!!!!

  • BusinessCustomer

That’s just great! I tried and tried and tried, but because our lines are linked to a business account, we couldn’t do it. I called today, and the business reps claimed to not know anything about the glitch and that it was impossible. I think after years of being all pro-vzw i’m evaluating my options and it looks like i’ll be able to save over $2k annually across 11 lines on T-Mobile.

  • yellowsnow

Kory: no where did it list I’d be bumped to tiered data. It maintained the unlimited data as seen and pointed out in the picture

Joel: Yes, I see it here.

Joel: Kory, thank you for your patience. I’ve double checked and confirmed that you are correct. you’ll be retaining the unlimited data plan with your new phone.

Joel: I’ve also noted your account to follow up and make sure that it does stay active with the new activation of your phone.

Just talked with this guy on Verizon. Congrats to everyone!!!!

    • dcesq06

When I called customer care and made the same argument, they said I would have to go to a tiered plan. I have a g2 waiting for me at the store, but I haven’t had any luck at the store or customer care with getting them to honor unlimited data.

      • Suralin

Ask for a supervisor. Keep getting it elevated. Or wait until an official statement comes out of Verizon.

  • GotSka81

“A bug in our systems temporarily gave our customers what they want. The bug has since been corrected and customer satisfaction has reduced to normal levels. We apologize for the convenience.”

  • JAg1208

My preorder yesterday of the Note 3 that would have allowed me to keep my unlimited was cancelled this evening. No explanation. I called VZW, and they can’t tell me why. SMH

  • Rich Robinson

    Happy New G2 owner FTW – Thanks Droid-Life!!! $139 + Unlimited = steal!

    • Rick Comer

Same scenario here. I ordered my G2 Sunday morning online with the 30% discount code around 9:30 am choosing in store pick up. They called me about 10:15 am telling me that my order was ready. I was at the VZW store when they opened at 11am and was out the door 15 minutes later with my new phone and unlimited data still intact.

  • Sean F.

Yahoo!!! Still happy to have unlimited.

  • dizel123

Verizon is now officially the greatest carrier on the planet. I think soon they will go back to offering unlimited for everyone. I love Verizon and hope they can become an international company and a global dynasty!

    • Suralin

      You’re trolling, right?

      • dizel123

Why can’t i love Verizon? They have great phones, great coverage and I pay a great price. And now they’re doing the right thing. What’s not to love?

        • Suralin

          You’re good…

          • dizel123

Not as good as Verizon…but who is?

  • KleenDroid

I am happy to see there are still so many that still have their unlimited data.

I thought many of them were tricked into tiers long ago.

Unless these are all the Gnex owners.

    • David

That’s me, for another 2 days – until my new S4 and G2 arrive (one for the wife, one for me – not sure which I’ll keep).

    • Craig

Gnex owner here lol. Soon to be a MotoX guy…

  • xrzx

Droidlife, you guys made my weekend, seriously…If it wasn’t for this blog, I would have never been able to upgrade and save several hundreds of dollars. You rule! BTW, the ONLY reason Verizon is allowing this is because there would have been a shitstorm rained down upon them the likes of which they have never seen before…Yeah I know they can do whatever the F they want and get away with it, but I’m just so glad the consumers won this time.

    • s0uth

i found out on engadget. i placed the order in a heart beat. so glad i did!

  • ImmaDroid

@kellex So they fixed the glitch and will no longer work?

    • Michael Martin

      correct

      • ImmaDroid

dammit, it would probably be still working if every tech site didn’t contact them to ask them why… I saw a bunch of sites say they’ve contacted VZW to find out if it was a glitch or not, etc..

        • Jonbo298

With the absolutely insane amount of people using chat and contacting customer service directly (seriously people, paranoid much?), it was inevitable.

        • fritzo

They were only doing their jobs. Good work Kellex! Verizon would’ve caught on eventually, and maybe even denied everyone their unlimited plans. who knows really.

          • ImmaDroid

well for one I wasn’t talking about kellen or Droid Life specifically. I was talking about multiple tech sites combined. Two, you just said it they would of found out eventually. Which maybe would of bought people an extra day or two. I think you’re getting a little too excited over the fact that they did contact them, which is odd..

          • fritzo

these blogs/tech sites write about rumors, secrets and such all day long. what if this was a breaking news story and DL had the jump on it? they have to let it play out while reporting it.

          • ImmaDroid

All I’m saying is I have a feed on my phone of multiple tech sites, which all reported this story, and all said they have contacted vzw or have contacted them multiple times to find out what’s going on. If so many tech sites didn’t contact Verizon regarding this there may have been a chance the opportunity to upgrade an keep unlimited data would last longer. you make it like I’m bashing Kellen for contacting them, which I’m not whatsoever. Its a total valid reason for Concern. John doe calling some inexperienced customer service agent would just say They Were not sure because they really wouldn’t know the answer. But major tech sites and multiple of them emailing them will raise a red flag

          • fritzo

didnt mean to say you were bashing Kellen, sorry. but part of their job is to be a “go between” (between us, the readers and carriers/manufacturers). They are the press and they have to get confirmation on stories. if there’s a potential story there, verizon would be the only people who would know whats up. i wouldn’t visit this site if they just reported rumors and then had nothing to back up those rumors. I’ve been asking about this Unlimited thing since thursday with reps and message boards, and got no answers. It wasn’t until DL had this story up that convinced me to make my purchase. almost every other vzw rep had no clue. no one forced us to jump on this “glitch”. and verizon didn’t have to honor it. i and many others are happy we took advantage. and if we didn’t, ah well, on to the next one.

  • antinorm

What this means is that there will be people on unlimited data contracts for the next two years. Hence, it will be less likely that Big Red will (be able to) simply eliminate unlimited plans. This could be a win even for those who didn’t take advantage of this, as long as they still have their grandfathered unlimited plans.

    • crazed_z06

There’s probably not that many unlimited holdouts around anymore.. most likely the reason Verizon just let the orders go through. It’d probably take more man-hours to have someone go through all the activations from the past weekend and kill the ones that got to keep unlimited.

      • kevinh52

Another thing, wonder how many Sales they had….. Could have been one of their best selling weekends. Think about it around $180 a phone…. They could have sold 1000s or More. So they made alot of money.

        • Tim242

Most people preordered Note 3’s. With tax and upgrade fee, $360 per phone. I upgraded two lines.

  • William Nadeau

I honestly don’t feel bad at all. I saw this happening Saturday night, didn’t pull the trigger. Woke up Sunday morning and it was still going on, so I finally bit the bullet. I don’t feel like “a douche” or I took advantage of Verizon at all. I figured a critical “glitch” or “bug” would have been fixed quickly, not an entire day later, so I thought this was a quick way to get a cheap upgrade and keep my unlimited. I don’t use nearly as much data as some people (usually 3 – 8 GB a month) but I do fluctuate, and wanted to have my unlimited just in case.

My G2 has shipped, but the receipt shows nothing about a data plan, just a “contract renewal” which, I’m no lawyer, but would assume I renew my current contract for 2 more years. We’ll see what happens when it arrives Wednesday

A similar thing happened to United, they had a glitch that allowed users to get very cheap plane tickets. United honored those tickets.

    • fritzo

same here. i wasn’t trying to cheat verizon. everyone understands that unlimited would be lost with upgrades. its just that no one knew what was going on this past weekend, so, us “early adopters” jumped on it. for all we know Verizon could’ve brought back unlimited data and hadn’t announced it yet. i was almost willing to buy a phone a full price just to keep unlimited. just chatted with a rep and i still have unlimited. Also, does the moto x come with a sim card or not? the chat rep said yes, i’m skeptical.

      • William Nadeau

If it’s 4G it has to have a sim card

      • 6stringslinger

I initially upgraded my GNex to a MotoX at a VZW store. They were going to take the sim card outta my GNex and put it into the MotoX, but it was a different size so the rep just put a different sim card in the X.

      • Suralin

It’s a different size, so your MotoX will most likely come with a nanosim.

      • jrbmed08

My order shipped with a nano sim.

  • Rodeojones000

Darn. I wish I had been paying more attention over the weekend. My wife and I both have available upgrades and she desperately needs a new phone. Keeping unlimited data would have been great. I assume this “error” has been fixed and there’s no chance of getting unlimited data anymore.

    • Dr. Tobias FΓΌnke, Analrapist

look like you really “blue” this one

  • JDotAdam

Hmm. Looks like 1/4 of the people who got their information from reps were right. Imagine that πŸ™‚ Enjoy the devices, everyone! Off to eBay I go!

  • jrbmed08

I’m still somewhat perturbed at the guy in store who wouldn’t let me go through with it, but it’s just a delay. I’ll have my moto x on Wednesday!

  • thedonxr

I hope Verizon has another “glitch” in two years so I can upgrade and keep my unlimited data again. πŸ˜›

  • nj86

I didn’t place an order over the weekend because a supervisor said it won’t be unlimited and I would lose it. So I called back today because of the news and they said that because the supervisor spoke to me and that no one knew what would happen I can order the note 3 but have to pick the 2gb plane and when the phone arrives they would change it back because of situation. So if anyone here was gonna order and spoke to someone on the phone and hopefully they noted your account they can change it back to unlimited for u. So now I just have to decide if I want a black or white note 3.

    • asorrentino

      good luck with that plan

      • ßen Murphy

Just wanted to say, Go Broncos! πŸ™‚ Fellow Denverite myself.

        • asorrentino

Playoffs will be here before we know it

    • dizel123

you are what they call in the business a “sucker”

  • RoadsterHD1

    I’m going demand a refund…. I paid full price damm it….

    • regret

Now now, you are among the lucky ones who did the honorable thing and purchased your phone with honesty and integrity..the rest of us will have to live with the repercussions of our actions this weekend for the rest of our lives…or maybe a year or two.

      • morpheus282

I had some major guilt over taking advantage of the “glitch”. Then I saw my bill for the month and multiplied it by 24. I’m surprisingly guilt free now.

      • RoadsterHD1

        LOL. thanks man…. πŸ™‚

      • Jonbo298

I foresee problems in 2 years for those of us who upgraded with this “software issue” over the weekend. Hopefully T-Mobile is still relevant at that time.

        • Tim242

Nahh, just back to full price.

          • Jonbo298

That’s the assumption but reading between the lines on this response can make it look like they’ll decide things when the contract is up.

          • Tim242

The end of their statement says that people wanting to remain on unlimited plans would have to buy at full price.

          • Jonbo298

I read that keyword of ‘existing’. It can be interpreted certain ways from how I can see it.

          • Tim242

People buying full price are paying double. You are paying them the equivalent $700 in overages per phone.

  • tabsaz

Are we positive this applies to the Note 3 pre-orders too?

    • Scott

I sure hope this holds up.

    • 6stringslinger

      Yep, positive. Relax.

  • Preach2k

Yes!!! I am glad I held out until this evening!!! This is Great News!!!

  • Chad Baker

I just received my shipping confirmation . Should have my new phone on Wednesday.

  • Ronald Bernard

    Ronnie likey….woo hoo!

  • Wooooooooo note 3

Hopefully that doesn’t change with the pre-orders. They haven’t even taken my money so hopefully it works

  • michael daikalo

I’m getting my moto x Wednesday…I think I should have gotten an lg g2 instead….you think Verizon will do a swap at the store or should I not chance it and just keep the moto x

  • fritzo

anyone else’s orders not shipped yet? I ordered my MOTO X saturday night. Delivery should be Oct. 3. Wondering why the status hasn’t updated yet.

  • David Molina

i just got a confirmation email from verizon with my unlimited data intact. looks good.

  • Joshua Hernandez

Nice to see Verizon stepping it up and admitting their fault while still honoring the unlimited data to those who upgraded. Verizon still has somewhat of a heart.

  • Caveman

We will see. I received order confirmation email for wife’s 5s, everything looks good, shows unlimited at 29.99 on it. However, when I check the order status it says “We received your order and it is in process. Expected Ship Date: 10/28/2013” Is this technically “approved” or not, who really knows. Will find out soon enough I guess. Same boat as the Note 3 guys. I could easily see them cancelling the pre-order since it is still “in process”. I’m okay either way, wife only uses like 1gb per month, my son and I still have unlimited, average 8-10gb per month.

  • w

I ordered mine this morning and still was able to keep my unlimited data. Order is still being processed from the last status check. Wish me luck.

  • TheOneGuy

If only I didn’t get the droid maxx full retail on release day.. ugh.. Coulda got the 5s and sold it for 600

  • kyle

this site rock…android is the tits…..to all the trolls/ haters… suckit!

  • chris125

Is there any where we can get the official “tip” you got kellex? I know you don’t want to blow your sources spot, but it would be nice to have something from verizon internal or not in the case when the phone arrives they try and pull a fast one

  • Jaxon Wright

If only my upgrade wasn’t in May….

  • jrbmed08

Unlimited Data cancellation brought to you by mine.

  • Thomas Ng

So is there anything official I can take with me to the Verizon store? I went yesterday and they told me I would have to switch to a tiered plan. But now that they are honoring the upgrades, do I just ask them again?

    • Alexander Garcia

Any screenshots of the upgrade process where your Unlimited Data was approved would help. Others took screencaps of conversations with online reps where they confirmed that the unlimited data would be honored which is even better.

      • Thomas Ng

Yeah I saved the chat but my order confirmation doesn’t have anything on it about my plans. I’ll just go into the store and raise some hell

        • Alexander Garcia

          Sounds like a plan! =)

        • Suralin

If you bought online, you can pull up the receipt on My Verizon. Just click on your Documents and Receipts link on the left navigation and pull up your receipt. It should clearly say what has changed on there.

          • Thomas Ng

I did buy online but chose in store pick up. So there’s nothing on my account yet. But during the checkout process nothing was changed so it should just be like everyone else’s.

  • Marco De Paulis

Verizon. You proved everyone wrong, including me..Thought I was going to have to send the MotoX back in… Awesome move VZW….Now I need to sell my OG Droid and GNex on ebay as package deal..ha ha…..Sorry T Mobile,, You will have to wait 2yrs for me…

  • WCM3

    Wow so jealous you guys..

    This news made my day

On another note they messed my order up cause I picked my phone up in store yesterday and got an email this afternoon saying my device has shipped and will be here tomorrow.

    2 Moto X’s anyone? lol.

  • Zack Kolev

Is verizon “unlimited” data still any good? When I left VZW, they had admitted that they throttle top users, without notification and no concrete limit of what constitutes top users so you cant know if you are actually in the being throttled. If you are getting benefit from the “unlimited” data then you are possibly being throttled. If not, then you don’t really need the unlimited data.

Also VZW was fined for blocking tethering apps for customers on tiered data plans but still have the right to block tethering for unlimited customers.

btw, I’m with T-mobile now and much happier with their policies, data and pricing.

    • crazed_z06

Ive used over 15 gigs before and it was still fast. No throttling ever.

    • M3D1T8R

Used 50GB this month, didn’t seem to be throttled, though Verizon’s 4G here has gotten a lot slower overall in the year we’ve had it (used to be near 30 at launch, now around 3-8 usually, as the network gets more and more clogged). My understanding re throttling is that was on 3G, they can’t throttle you on 4G.

      • Zack Kolev

Yes, perhaps it was the congestion. Earlier this year, I couldn’t get anything over 8Mbps on VZW LTE. When they first launched LTE (HTC Thunderbolt-time) I was getting 40+. Maybe T-Mobile is going through the same golder age with new network/fewer users right now. With T-Mo i get ~25Mbps where I would get 3-6Mbps on VZW.

    • Colin Huber

      Haha.

    • RoadsterHD1

The throttling you speak of is only 3g data, and only on busy towers. I use about 30 to 50gigs a month and no throttling.

    • Craig

I’m poor right now so both my wife and I tether in our home. I use anywhere between 75-150 gigs a month and have never been throttled.

  • crazed_z06

How I felt when reading this..

  • Alexander Garcia

On the last post, I stated that Ol’ Big Red would force people who upgraded and renewed their contracts over the weekend to one of the tiered data plans. My “insider” just told me that they’re gonna honor the unlimited data plans to avoid any backlash and bad PR. The glitch is a real glitch that they overlooked, but a very very small percentage of their subscribers actually took advantage over it. So ENJOY you UNLIMITED DATA everyone! =)

  • Masta Marc

the only thing keeping me from upgrading is the no more unlimited data. my 3G phone says i use about 4GB a month… since LTE is faster.. wouldnt this be doubled? i hate verizon but they’re the only company that has signal in my parents town

  • Masta Marc

which phone is this working for? none that i pick are allowing this

nevermind i just re-read the article— oops

    • Michael Tate

Dude … it’s over … it’s been over … you had to order this past weekend.

    • You don’t like reading do you…

    • La2da

      None. Its done.

  • VerizonLoyaltyRewards

Well now I’ve finally been convinced to leave Verizon after considering it for a long while. Funny how everyone used the “PR disaster” reason for why these upgrades should go through for the people who took advantage, but how about public relations in regards to the much larger majority of customers who didn’t jump through this loophole this weekend and instead have paid or were considering paying full price for their next device? We’re worried about public relations with people who knew they were taking advantage of a glitch, but not for the rest of your paying customers? Someone commented on an earlier article this weekend something along the lines of “Verizon, where the most loyal customers get treated the worst”. That’s been true all along while new customers walking in off the street can get better prices through promotions than someone who might be ready to renew a 10 year old contract, and it’s true now again that a bunch of people who were well aware that they were taking advantage of a mistake are getting rewarded, while the rest can either buy a full price phone or go from $30 for Unlimited to $30 for 2GB, or leave. I’ll go with option C. I’ll get my G2 and unlimited data through a different carrier where I will be asked to pay the same price as everyone else, not three times as much as someone who just happened to purchase 12 hours earlier than me while there was a glitch in the system. Or better yet wait for the Nexus 5 instead since I’ll be off the carrier that, speaking of PR, has such horrible relations with Google for their crappy business practices, that they won’t even be getting it.

    • Diablo81588

      Cry baby.

      • 6stringslinger

        He’s mad, bro.

  • Dudikus

Saved my backside! I just killed my DNA’s screen and I had an upgrade sitting there calling to me. I didn’t have to choose between $450 discount and Unlimited data.

  • Anthony

In a bit of breaking news, I just spoke to a rep about vzw honoring the unlimited data. I placed my order around 6 pm last night right before the fix so it must have been in limbo. I received 2 Verizon Wireless Internet Order Update emails: one last night saying it was processing and one today saying my order is officially on hold. I called up and asked why it was on hold. The rep mentioned I have to choose a tier and I told her how the order process said I can use my existing plan and had screenshots. I also mentioned the official statement from vzw and how droid-life mentioned it. Asked to speak to supervisor and forwarded him proof. Looks like I have to fight for it but it may work. I advise any people who ordered and had their orders placed on hold to call 866-338-7390 and forward proof to supervisor, [email protected], immediately!!!!

    • Craig Rohwer

I just was speaking to a rep, as I had the same situation. He said it was on hold until resolution, as I stated I would not accept a change in plan. Maybe I should call back and get someone who will do something about it.

Did you get your order approved after talking to the supervisor?

      • Anthony

The rep only gave me the supervisor’s contact info and said she would make a note of the situation on my account. I called right after the news broke so they were also waiting for official word. Sounds like we have a strong case though, provided you have screenshots.

      • Anthony

Just got off the phone with a vzw rep. She said they WILL honor orders for unlimited data that were placed on hold but no time frame was given because unlimited data was “not in the system”. She advised me to keep calling back daily to check on it. So if your order was in limbo like mine, I’d suggest taking a few minutes out of your day to check on your order and we should all receive our phones shortly.

        • Craig Rohwer

Just got an email with this note:

***Please note that your order is being processed with the 2 GB data package for $30/month due to system limitations. Once you receive and activate your equipment, a followup will be done on your account to reapply the $29.99/month unlimited data feature as per your order confirmation.***

So there. I have in writing, even though the system is crap, they will honor my unlimited retroactively. And I have to activate, as going from a 3G to a 4G SIM.

    • Maria Trippe

I got the same order-on-hold email, and the rep I called said I should “do nothing” and wait a day or two until they get the official word. Let us know if the supervisor was able to get it moving for you please because the lady I got said there was no way I could keep my unlimited data.

      • Anthony

Are we the only two that got stuck in order-on-hold limbo? I called this morning and was told my screenshots would be forwarded to marketing for a decision.

  • mendy817

fyi, before anyone heads to their vzw store, I just spoke to 2 separate people from customer care and neither of them have seen any press release. I’m assuming the note sent to kellen hasn’t been officially released to customer service, and until that happens there’s no promise you will keep your unlimited data.

    • dcesq06

Yep. Looks like we will need something officially from Verizon on their website.

    • 6stringslinger

Good grief, man, what further proof do you want? Verizon officially responded to Droid-Life with a promise to honor all who upgraded and kept their unlimited data. Would the Clydesdales parading down main street with Verizon’s promise branded into their sides while the Blue Angels wrote it in the sky make you to believe it? Relax, good happens occasionally!

      • mendy817

Its not me who wants further proof, I believe it’s legit.. it’s Verizon that won’t simply take the word of a non-Verizon website, which isn’t a shocker obviously. Until official word is passed to the actual people who have to ok the transaction it looks like we’re SOL. Patience is a virtue my friends.

  • dcesq06

I ordered a G2 yesterday for store pickup. I just called Verizon customer care after seeing this article and the rep told me that I would have to go to tiered data and that Verizon has not published ANY statement saying that I could keep my unlimited data plan. She said the memo she got today said that, upon activation, I would be put on a tiered plan.

Not sure what to do now.

    • chris125

I was told the same thing yesterday

    • asorrentino

just stop calling and go get you’re phone and print this story out if you must….inside people dont know anything stop asking them….some arent even in this country!!

      • chris125

eh this story wont really hold any value since it’s not “official from verizon” so they will be like well anyone could have said this. Until something from verizon comes out saying yes they can keep unlimited it probably would be best not to activate the device or risk losing unlimited.

        • Tim242

There is no activating device. Insert SIM, and go. These aren’t the *228 to activate days.

          • chris125

It’s still activating. *228 or not there is activation going on otherwise the phone wouldn’t work. Plus even using the sim you have to accept the terms and everything which potentially would be where they would get you

          • Tim242

Devices with SIM’s don’t activate, they just read from the SIM. Case and point: Verizon can’t yet activate a new SIM for a Nexus 7, but if you put your current active SIM in, it works just fine.

  • M3D1T8R

Yay! Great news. So glad I jumped on this. Waiting on my Moto X in the mail Wednesday. Probably going to sell it and stick with my DNA til next year, or possibly buy the Dev edition for the 32GB.

  • Biyobe

dang it why was I out in the woods camping…. no cell signal and missed opportunity…. dang you nature!!!

  • Do me right DL!

I’m going to have Droid-Life’s baby

  • tech247

Damn i missed out. I did not trust Verizon enough to do the right thing. The optimist in me is thinking that this was intentional on their path as the threat of losing folks to GSM with the new nexus 5 was too much so they decided to have a “glitch” to lock them in. Yeah, probably not true but it makes me feel better…….

    • chris125

plus it was the last day of the quarter so what better way to boost sales then this “glitch” and make it look good since tmo has really been doing well lately

  • vcwx

What about phones that won’t be shipped for a few weeks. For those of us with pre-orders, will these be honored also? Right now my contract still just says month to month Nationwide Talk/Text 450 w/unltd data.

    • Tim242

Their statement said ALL weekend orders will be honored. The contract doesn’t get set until it is shipped.

  • chris_johns

leaving right now n going straight to verizon to try to hussle a moto x with unlimited data…hooooraaahhhh wish me luck lol

  • Rob

Lesson #1: gotta check the RSS feed on the weekend. πŸ™

  • Bill Hewins

Of course this happens the weekend that I don’t check Droid Life and had no idea this was going on.

    • M3D1T8R

What, you don’t check DL eight times a day like me? (…I have no life, but at least I have Droid Life.)

  • Tim242

    Good move Verizon!

  • chris_johns

F U VERIZON F U FUFUFUFFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFUFF….soooooo mad i didnt know about this and didnt get to take advantage!@!$!%125

    • James Cliff

I’d be saying the same thing. But hey…if you have your unlimited plan that’s all that really matters. These phones will be a lot cheaper in several months on Ebay / Craigslist.

      • chris_johns

glass half full kinda guy eh? lol ty for the positive outlook

    • Alexander Garcia

I’m actually on tiered share everything plan with my wife ’cause quite frankly we both never go over 6GB combined monthly. We’re pretty much tied to wi-fi for the most part. Plus I have that employee discount that knocks 25% off of my monthly bill. =) However, for those of you that DID take advantage of the weekend glitch, Congrats! Enjoy your Unlimited Data! =)

    • Tim242

You knew. You were just scared bro : P

  • mqmoon

Does anyone know how long we have to keep a subsidized phone on our accounts before we can resell them? do we have to activate them at all? I bought two iphone 5s’ during the glitch, so that i can obtain maximum resale value. i have no intention of using anything besides my dev edition Moto X πŸ™‚

    • Sundeep S

Activate and resell, as long as you can get it unlocked! Some features on verizon online are disabled until you activate the new phone (i tried to change my minutes plan this morning, and i received a message indicating that the new phone needs to be activated before making any changes.).

      • M3D1T8R

What do you mean by “get it unlocked” ? I’m planning on selling mine and want to be sure I do it right. I just put the sim card in, wait a few hours, and then go back to my old phone and sell the new one (after factory resetting it)? Will I need a new sim for my old phone when I go back to it or can I use my current one again? (New phone has smaller sim so I can’t swap w/o cutting).

  • sylent101

Maybe they would still be letting people slip through if you guys didnt make a post about verizon grandfathering unlimited data. Kinda told the world there and brought attention to it lol. But anyway I upgraded back in may, even chose the 2gb option and it was still unlimited

    • Tim242

Think about what you just typed. If they didn’t post it, we wouldn’thave known about it. Hush.

      • sylent101

Hush? I’ll pass..Understand that by posting it, they’ve also brought attention to it causing Verizon to put a halt to it. Before it was largely unnoticed online and was silently being taken advantage of, now its over. Im not mad at dl, I don’t care my data is still unlimited lol, I just thought it would be better left as one of those quiet deals. Thats all I was saying champ, no need to get testy over blogs, phones, and data packages.

        • Tim242

I’m not being testy. You were basically saying the blogs should hush, I think you should : P My point is, by them posting it, many more people got to take advantage of it. I have bought 3 phones on my account full price to keep unlimited. Due to their post, I got to upgrade 2 lines to the Note 3. I paid $360 each, so it was basically BOGO. For that, I’m thankful.

    • Sundeep S

That’s true. but you cant hold anything in the internet world! they’ll know it one way or the other. our only option was to upgrade it before they fixed it!

    • Ian

So you wouldn’t mind if you never got wind of deals like this again? Welllllllll alrighty then……

    • Alexander Garcia

      You ungrateful sonova…

    • Lonetree

I don’t mind the post, I mind the hordes of people that called/chatted customer service to try to confirm. The reps don’t know anything, it just brings glitches like this to management’s attention and kills the deal sooner. Just pull the trigger and hope for the best, pay the restocking fee worst case scenario.

That being said, I took advantage of the deal in time.

  • Sundeep S

What does “orders that were approved this past weekend” mean? does it just mean all the orders that were placed and got order confirmation emails?

    • 6stringslinger

If you placed the order, got a confirmation email showing your plan is the same, including unlimited data, then you are good to go. Not to worry.

      • Sundeep S

        #CoolBeans!

  • asorrentino

Got a pretty little white Moto X on the way now and i can switch it up daily with my S4 i bought full retail price about a month ago….this just set me up for all future phone purchases…can always sell one for a good price and have plenty to throw down on anything new i want at full retail again!!!!

  • Ken Bosse

    Good Guy Verizon

  • Diar

AAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!! After being forced to call in and told I’d need to pick a new data plan I just canceled the order. Then I see this…..dammit. I got an email confirmation that said if you didn’t mean to cancel the order call this number. I called and the guy said I’d have to resubmit online, which, of course, is now impossible and he couldn’t do it either. I’m still trying to complain via phone and email but give myself a .0000000001 percent chance of success. I should have waited a couple hours instead of canceling so quickly.

    • DailyPlunge

Yeah, there were a few people cancelling and telling others to do the same. If Verizon didn’t honor the price you can always return it.

      • Sundeep S

Exactly what I was thinking. There wasn’t anything you could lose! return within 14 days, and get your unlimited plan back! it was worth taking a shot, and i did! yay!

        • Michael Tate

WORD!! I thought exactly the same and picked up two new MAXXs!

    • dreadnatty08

I got the same thing, man. I cancelled when getting to the store because the sales associate said I needed to change my plan when I activated. Called just now and said they could have honored it had I not cancelled (because I ordered yesterday). FU Verizon.

      • Michael Tate

You should have held out … your worst case scenario would have been to return the new device and revert to your old plan/device. Pretty simple IMO.

  • Colin Huber

Man, Verizon sure showed a lot of readers what’s up.

  • Stephen Rajek

Perfect timing! I’m at the VZW store now picking up my new X with my unlimited plan intact!

    • chris_johns

how when u ordeR? id go right now if ic ould keep it!%!@%!@

      • Stephen Rajek

I ordered mine online yesterday and opted for store pickup. I showed the rep this Droid Life article while I was there. He wasn’t aware of any “glitches” over the weekend but gave me no grief and went on his merry way of firing up my new phone. I even got a new nano sim rather than cutting and reusing my old one and my account still shows unlimited data. Now this X is going on Swappa to be sold since my Dev Edition is on the way πŸ˜›

  • drudometkin

If this works out for me, droid life you got a tip coming your way… you guys rock.!

  • Scott

Is this statement somewhere printed out on VerizonWireless.com so I can use it at the store?

  • Suralin

What I want to know is how often was DL’s site getting hit since their initial story…? Also, Kellex, do a poll and see how many of us actually got a chance to take advatange.

    • Ben Baird

I’m curious how many of us danced with the devil on this as well…

      • Michael Tate

        I danced … twice! πŸ˜‰

      • cg

I dunno about danced, but I just had the tip out. I did not fully consummate the deal…

I just wanted to see with my own eyes (my account on VZW.) I saw the unlimited, but did not pull the trigger.

  • Disneyland27

So even if you use the new SIM that’s pre installed it will let you keep unlimited?

    • Joseph A. Yager

Yes – why and how wouldn’t it? I keep seeing this comment, but I don’t understand how that would even work…would it pop up on the screen of your phone or something?

      • Disneyland27

Because your plan is tied to your SIM. But I have a Droid 3 and it shows up an ESN on my account but I took advantage of the glitch and ordered the Droid Maxx and they are sending me a new SIM.

        • Joseph A. Yager

How horrible would that have been? I’m thinking with the statement that they will honor it with the new SIM, too

          • Disneyland27

People had been saying if you use the new SIM that you will be kicked off unlimited.

          • Joseph A. Yager

I’m showing that my contract, with unlimited, has been extended to 2015, so wouldn’t that be what my new SIM is based on?

          • Disneyland27

It will come into play when you activate the phone with the new SIM. Not right after the contract extension.

      • rdcamero

I agree. Why would the new sim change anything. You plan retains unlimited data and the sim is tied to your plan. The sim just identifies and authorizes your device on their network.

  • Mayoo

Did Verizon actually just made people happy? Where are we? What is this world? Who are they? SHAPESHIFTERS, REVEAL YOURSELVES!

  • speed_phreak

C’mon everyone, join in “Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya…”

    • Scott

      Ugh no.

  • Scott

I hope nothing bad happens while we’re all waiting for our Note 3 pre-orders to be filled.

  • Phillies3429

I hope they see how many upgraded who we’re not willing to give up unlimited data. And see how much money they will make keeping all those customers for at least 2 more years.

  • Michael Tate

OH YEAH!! The wife and me are lovin’ our new MAXXs even more so after this news!

THANKS Kellex and Verizon!! Woo Hoo!!

  • Joseph A. Yager

Gamble taken and WON! From a GNex to a G2 – should be a pretty sweet upgrade. I was starting to dread switching to another carrier, so glad someone spotted this and DL reported it!

  • Asimoalex

Ugh of corse this happens on the weekend I’m super busy with wedding stuff… Any chance they will let me in too lol

  • David Tyler

This is Good News! I am glad I took that risk. HTC One from best buy for $50.00. I couldnt have it any better.

  • cg

I’m legitimately happy for those who took a gamble (and believe me, that was a gamble) and actually WON!

I am glad I didn’t do it…I have no qualms doing to alternate upgrade on two basic lines and keeping my unlimited data lines off contract.

Congratulations to those who took that gamble though!

  • Jim Kalista

    WOO HOO!!!!!!!

  • Clark White

How will this be done for people who haven’t picked up the phone/shipped? I tried to go today and they wouldn’t put it on unlimited.

    • mec

go pick it up and call corporate customer service?

    • chris125

it wont work unless you ordered over the weekend since the “glitch” is fixed and they are right that unlimited no longer shows in their system

      • Clark White

I ordered over the weekend but went to pick it up today. So i received the email stating it kept the unlimited.

  • ASV505

Jokes on us. Watch a new Nexus be announced for Verizon in exactly 15 days

    • mec

      hahahahahhahahahahaha. probably.

    • P

No biggie, just sell your new phone and buy it off contract.

      • ASV505

Which is what I would do too. I know it’ll be the same as the g2 but I don’t know if I’m sold on the back buttons. Nexus won’t have them

        • Ian

It’s not the same. It might have the same SoC, but that will likely be it.

  • Awesome stuff, I’d love to see a poll… Try to figure out how many people were able to take advantage.

  • chris125

Wow verizon doing something right for a change. Touche

  • interpol

Well well.verizon makimg it right. Starting to like this new verizon.

    • Scott

Woah wait a minute. They haven’t changed a bit. They just aren’t willing to piss off a large number of their users over an error on their part.

  • AndrewScottRox

Didn’t upgrade. Still glad I didn’t. Kudos to all of you that did. Enjoy your new gear!

    • Marco De Paulis

      Why are u glad u didn’t exactly?

      • p_droid

Because then he’d be stuck on vzw for 2 more years!

        • Marco De Paulis

I see. Well, I don’t see the problem as long as I still have my unlimited intact

          • AndrewScottRox

p_droid is correct. Verizon just doesn’t have the phones that I want. The only way I can get something that I really want is to switch carriers. I’m probably going to drop my unlimited to go to a prepaid plan on a GSM carrier. Hello Nexus devices!

          • Marco De Paulis

Well, I’m hoping a Nexus will come to Verizon within the next two years, even thought it’s a long shot

  • Craig Rohwer

This has calmed my biggest fears. All weekend it was nail biting nervous, especially when pushing the “Submit Order” button. Now I’m ecstatic!

    • cg

You are a stronger man than I am…I don’t have the heart for that kind of risk….

I protect my Verizon Unlimited Data like it was a child…don’t want to put it at risk…especially when I have two basic lines that I can upgrade anyhow.

      • C-Law

I did the same. I baked out of hitting submit twice

  • Eikast

I guess that there is a God after all (sarcasm. I believe in God but you know, I wasn’t being serious).

Great timing. My birthday is on October 3rd. Thanks Verizon.

    • Ben Baird

Mine is the on the 2nd

    • Tim242

I don’t believe. It’s funny you bring up “god” when excited about something the devil did.

  • florious80

For all the wrongs Verizon has done to its customers, kudos to them for actually acknowledging their own problem and granting the wishes of their customers, instead of being corporate scumbags that many have come to associate with Verizon. Congrats to all who’ve upgraded this weekend.

  • Pdewet

I am so glad I took the risk and did it… I don’t know what made me more nervous, potentially loosing my unlimited data or ordering a $300 phone in the spur of the moment without checking with the wifey first πŸ™‚

    • jose

      I’d fear the latter more.

    • 2001400ex

Totally losing the unlimited… But the wifey was a very close second. Haha

    • obvious

Your data may be unlimited, but now your love life isn’t.

    • Steve Bennet

this. our conversation the next morning started with: “honey, before I tell you what I bought, know that we can cancel it if we have to”

  • mec

can we get a source link or a screenshot of said email…. or something?

    • drose0

      +1

    • cg

      +1,000,000

What, are we supposed to just take you at your word, Kellex/Droid-Life??? πŸ™‚

  • Jay F

    Alhumdulilah!!!!!!! #TEAM NEW PHONE UNLIMITED

  • rmh5280

    Wow, pigs really can fly!!!!

  • duke69111

“retain their unlimited plans for the duration of their contract and receive their new device.” I wonder if it will get striped at the end.

    • AdAdObEc

I doubt it. “customers who want to retain existing unlimited data plans, must pay full retail price for a replacement phone.”

  • Wow, Verizon did the “right” thing?

  • Daniel Flores

This shall be remembered at the ‘Verizon Glitch of 2013’

  • crazed_z06

Nice……. cant wait to molest dat faux feather on the Note 3……

  • drose0

I so hope this is true… I discovered this Friday night and took advantage of it to replace my beloved Gnex.

  • Can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I love Verizon right now!

    • Daniel Flores

      LOL….me too!…and Droid Life…hell, I love everyone right now.

      • Jason Downing

I’ll chalk up another one for DL… Verizon comes in a close 2nd in THIS CASE!

    • DroidzFX

      I would not trust Verizon.

Whats more interesting is this may push the date they force everyone off unlimited data. Even those who are going month to month.

Or Verizon does not care and already has plans to change the terms of service on Everybody sometime down the road.

      • chris125

probably will try and change it with VoLTE since that would require all new plans with everything being data and no longer need seperate voice and message plans

        • kashtrey

Yeah, VoLTE will be when everyone finally has to accept tiered data. We’ll see though because with VoLTE there will be truly portable phones that should work on any carrier (depending on radios). If Sprint and T-Mobile are still offering cheap relatively unlimited plans, Verizon will have to do something to keep the power users.

          • chris125

I agree. I think at first we may see better pricing and plans like when lte first launched and they let users keep unlimited. Until they got a much larger and more reliable lte network then they really started hosing customers. Hopefully by then sprint and tmo have somewhat comparable coverage and unlimited to put a little pressure on verizon

    • David Molina

      YEAH! …right now..

    • Pedro

I wonder how long that ‘I love Verizon! I just signed another 2 year contract because I love them!’ mood will last when software updates come and go, unlocked bootloaders are available and super awesome phones are non-Verizon exclusives. But you got the unlimited…

      • I’m only paying $60/mo for unlimited data, unlimited texts, and 450 minutes – so I don’t really care πŸ˜›

        • DER

how is your plan so cheap?

          • $69.99 for the talk, text, data promo, so basically I’m paying the $59.99 for 450 minutes and unlimited text, and $9.99 for unlimited data + 20% employer discount. I never want to give up my plan, haha

  • Wooohoooo!

  • howlovely

Look at everyone celebrating their dishonesty. Congrats, you’re a dirt bag! Hope none of you consider yourselves good honest people. Enjoy that phone that the rest of us pay full price for.

    • Joe

      You jelly mayne?

    • Nathaniel_G

Sounds like somebody was too much of a puss to pull the trigger and now is jealous…

    • Ian Smith

      i luh dis shiiii

    • Sean

You need to learn the difference between honesty and opportunity or you will never be successful in business, sport, etc. Good luck.

    • David Tyler

      Someone is sour?

    • Caveman

Would you like some cheese with that whine good sir?

    • Andrew

I jumped on this. I saw reports that verizon was allowing upgrades on unlimited with a subsidized phone price.

Since I has already preordered the note 3 at full price the system would not allow me to upgrade to the note 3, but I noticed if i went with the note 2 I had the reported option of keeping my unlimited. Since I really wanted the note 3 I started chatting with online support. I told them the site was allowing unlimited upgrades on other phones, but not the note 3. She told me it was due to my pre-order and proceeded to help me cancel the preorder. Once she canceled the preorder I was able to continue with the purchase. she asked to stay on while I completed the order so she could verify. After getting a confirmation number I asked her to verify i still had my unlimited (i did). I offered extreme thanks…end of process.

With that chain of events I don’t see anything dishonest. I knew it was possibly a glich or a promotion based on various information (it was really fussy when i jumped on it), but verizon worked with me to complete my upgrade and mentioned nothing about it being a glitch

      • 6stringslinger

That is PRECISELY the same scenario for me yesterday. CSR was polite and helpful. No problems.

  • moelsen8

and this shall henceforth be known as the day the entire internet upgraded

    • NIGHTSCOUT

Except me. I upgraded last when the S3 was released. That’s when they cut off the unlimited data. Had to buy a used Note II to stay with the times. I’m crossing my fingers, and hoping Verizon has another “glitch” when my account is able to be upgraded.

      • Rafy286

Me 2. The Likeliness of that occurring again are slim to none.

      • NastyEmu

What’s wrong with just keeping the S3? Mine’s still going strong.

        • Taylor Abrahamson

S3 running CM10.1. No issues. It’s faster than my friends S4’s (that are running the crap stock rom)

          • michael arazan

Anyone know of a vzw SG3 stock 4.2 Rom? I got a SG3 replacement from Asurion for my GNex, and I can’t seem to find one yet.

          • BTLS

whoa whoa whoa… Can I ask why they gave you an S3? Could they be out of Gnexs completely?? I was just about to turn my gnex in with Asurion for a cracked screen and I would MUCH rather get an S3!

          • michael arazan

yes Assyrian is giving out gs3 if you request one for a replacement GNex or they will try to pawn off crappy LG devices but you can request a different device just say you hate LG devices

        • NIGHTSCOUT

I wanted a larger screen, higher cap battery, and a faster processor. The Note II is a winner. I get 2 full days battery with moderate use. 1.5 days with heavy use. I’m not constantly looking for a wall outlet anymore πŸ™‚

          • ImmaDroid

When I had the S3 I thought the battery life was just fine. Now I have the S4 and thats even better

  • gociaran

I bought a Verizon Iphone 5s at upgrade price through the glitch, maintaining unlimited data. Got a confirmation email stating the same but when I go to try and find my order on myverizon it just says “shipping 11/11”. Is it likely that these orders will be honored too? I feel like given the time Verizon has now before these ship, some other clause will be thrown in there to close the opportunity for us. Any help greatly appreciated, thanks so much for being a great resource not only for Android users but Verizon customers generally.

    • vzcx

Was also wondering the same thing around phones that won’t be shipped for a few weeks. For those of us with pre-orders, will these be honored also? Right now my contract still just says month to month Nationwide Talk/Text 450 w/unltd data.

    • xrzx

I got my iPhone 5S today…I’m afraid to call and activate it, but eventually I’m going to have to. Will probably try it tomorrow morning. I’ll post back and tell you what happens…also if you have any updates, please post when you get your device. Thanks πŸ˜€

  • metropolis

I AM THE ONE WHO UPGRADES.

  • burkett375

    wooohooo!!!!

now we need some LG G2 developers to get some CM on that sumbitch!

  • Suralin

Yay!!! High five to everyone! Although I’ll be getting a MotoX, I suspect I won’t miss the unlockable bootloader and custom roms with an optimized MotoX.

    • mec

im hoping thats the case. mine will be here in a few days, too

      • Suralin

Android has come a long way from the days when custom roms actually offered new features and optimizations that you definitely couldn’t get on stock Android. I’ve been using stock Motoblur (but rooted) on my 16GB Razr and it’s taught me that I can still access system files if need be, but I certainly don’t need custom roms. I will most likely get an app to replace the launcher, but not much more than that.

  • Joe

Got to give Verizon props on this one. Glad I went ahead with it!

  • Artune

I really feel bad for people who didn’t jump on this “glitch” which i think was purposely done by verizon. The worst case senario was that you had 14 days if they announced they were not honoring it. I loved my Gnex and I’ll keep it as a back up if my LG G2 breaks or gets stolen.

  • Jason Downing

Well I’m glad to hear that… Got my LG G2 up and running and all is good. I wonder if they’re going to send ppl who placed orders an email as well to confirm this

  • Mon

I loved my Verizon service, but I hated the price and the fact that I lost my unlimited data. I just, in principle, cannot be with a company that gives you less than others give you, and charges you more money. I left Verizon but I do admit they have the best service and reception. Congrats to those who upgraded though.

    • Wendy

What? You can’t be with a company that “gives you less than others give, and charges you more money” and then go on to admit they do have the best service and reception… Verizon is able to provide that service and reception because they are a little more expensive than their competitors.

  • TuckandRoll84

So what happens if I don’t like my Moto X (not likely) that is on the way and decide to exchange it for a G2? Do they cancel my contract and start over or do they just switch devices?

    • rwp5028

Sell online for full price and just pay full price for a G2

  • YEE-HAW!!! Lovin’ my new blue HTC One!

  • Jon Drain

Seems ironic that they fix this “software issue” on the last day of their 3rd quarter sales.

    • New_Guy

      You, sir, are a genius.

      • Jon Drain

hahaha. I am far from that.

        • New_Guy

          Stroke of genius?…

  • Little G

I hope all of this chaos doesn’t have an effect on those of us who recently placed preorders using available upgrades from other lines.

  • P

Where are all those jealous fear-mongering trolls now?

    • thatsok

I’ll never be jealous of people lacking character enough to take advantage of a mistake and act like an entitled hipster at the possibility that it might have been cancelled. You can have your phone and dishonesty, I’ll keep my dignity.

      • Joe

        Hipsters? You mad bro?

      • d-rock

aww…someone is jealous. I’m sorry but ANYONE feeling bad b/c they pulled one over on Verizon (or AT&T for that matter) need to pull themselves off the teet.

It’s not like they aren’t paying for an extremely overpriced service.

      • jose

        HAHAH what a loser.

        • Adrynalyne

Who is a bigger loser though? The person who used a glitch to get ahead?

Or the sorry chump who thought they were getting ahead and instead became Verizon’s b*tch for the next two years?

          Tough call…

          • jose

I have no problem being Verizon’s b#tch, have been for more than a decade. Until other carriers have a network worth a damn, I’m sticking with Evil Red.

Like somebody on DL once said: If I’m gonna get f#cked, I want it be good.

          • Android Spy 007

take a your blood pressure you maybe having a heart attack lol

          • John

Dang that was nice. Im using this line.

          • rdcamero

Me either. With my discount through work nobody can beat the price I pay for the coverage they provide.I don’t see myself going anywhere in the next couple years.

          • 6stringslinger

Stick with Verizon, you’ll get it good numerous times in the future, I assure you.

      • Eikast

And I’ll never respect a American wireless carriers for taking advantage of their customers and over pricing their plans compared to what Europeans pay simply due to the fact that there are only two large carriers and two smaller ones that have a decent subscriber base.

      • Yes, I should feel horrible that I am giving Verizon my money for a guaranteed 2 years in exchange for a subsidized phone that everyone else can get, including those with grandfathered unlimited data on AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.

        • 6stringslinger

          You sarcastic, bro??

      • 6stringslinger

You mad, bro?? I will feel sooo sorry for you as I enjoy my new Note 3 for only $300, while keeping BOTH my unlimited data AND my promotional $20 monthly credit from Big Red.

    • cg

I wasn’t jealous; just very cautious. In my opinion it could have gone either way.

I am happy that this worked out though. I am sincere in that. I just didn’t want people losing their Verizon unlimited data, which is much more valuable than any phone on the market or will be on the market.

    • Adrynalyne

      Not jealous.

I didn’t want another contract tying me to Verizon…unlimited or not.

      • jose

        • Adrynalyne

Thanks for contributing. I read a lot into that …

          πŸ˜‰

          • 6stringslinger

If it’s Miley, she’s already bent over, no need to request it.

      • Feed Jake

I didn’t want to go to the prom anyways. You gotta rent a tux and buy dinner. I’d rather sit at home alone and masturbate.
Yeah I’m not jealous either. But no worries. When my Note 3 gets here with 4G and network coverage pretty much everywhere I’ll be sure to put myNote 2 on eBay so you can bid on it.

  • Tim Swann

I really wish I saw this “error” over the weekend, because I would have bought a Moto X or a GS4 without even thinking twice if I knew I could keep my unlimited. Bummer.

  • Mike Hilal

Welp, that’s what I get for helping my sister move. I missed the boat to get a cheaper note 3

  • howlovely

Guess I’ll switch carriers then. I’m not about to pay 600 for a G2 to keep unlimited that a bunch of dishonest customers who knew it was an error took advantage of this weekend. Ah life in modern society, the jerks always get rewarded and the honest people suffer.

    • dznk

      You mad bro?

    • ASV505

How did this change anything for you? Cry baby

    • Daniel Flores

I know your mad…but calling us ‘dishonest’ for taking advantage of a situation is wrong. I’m not a jerk simply for reading Droid Life and taking advantage of Verizon’s Glitch…

    • Suralin

Yes, because Verizon clearly is an honest carrier who doesn’t take advantage of its users with things like 2GB for $30…

    • Phillies3429

No? I’ve paid full retail for devices. If the option is there, I’m taking it. How is that dishonest?

    • schoat333

I would agree with you if VZW was a good company, but they are crap, and deserved this.

    • Ian

I enjoyed your other rant on the last post too “hahanelson” GTFO

    • TuckandRoll84

Yep Verizon is completely fair to their customers. Like how some people can get 6 GB to themselves for $30 while others can only get 2 GB to share with their family for $30.

    • 6stringslinger

It was not a “glitch”. Verizon knew about it for 2 days! It was an unannounced one time promotion that Big Red used to make quota for the 3rd quarter. It still provides them with total deniability. I can assure you, there is nothing dishonest about taking advantage of this legitimate deal. I had 2 separate CSRs admit that it was a planned, legit promotion.

  • Gerry Ng

coming from a Droid X2 to a newly purchased LG G2, hell yea!

  • Gnex

They’ll find a way to screw us, I’m sure.

    • ToddAwesome

Be happy for once, damn you!

      • Gnex

But this is Verizon we’re talking about. VERIZON !1!!!1!!

        • cg

That’s why I didn’t do it…and I knew about it. I’ll alternate upgrade. I still save, though not as much.

    • chris125

well they will have to wait for another 2 years at least lol

    • Adrynalyne

They already did. They got you to commit to another two years.

  • mec

happy birthday to me. I ordered on my birthday and have been patiently waiting and hoping to see something like this.

thanks for the $400 gift verizon πŸ™‚

  • Manuel Alvarado

    ULLLLTTTTRRRRAAAAAA COMMMMBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

    • Android Spy 007

and yet others were porting out to sprint wimax 4G hahaha (sarcasm)

    • David Molina

more like a COMBO BREAKER! gave verizon that HADOUKEN real good.

    • Steve Ballmer

Yeah boi! Kinda odd how almost every android blog that reported on this cited Droid Life as a source, yet Android Central once again ignores that Droid Life exists. They suck.

      • Anon

Even the regular tech sites like CNET and Engadget cited Droid Life. Pathetic of Android Central.

        • michael arazan

I have seen AC cite DL, Once….. Once

    • Manuel Alvarado

So what’s the word guys? Has anyone received their phone order through the mail and attempted to activate it with the new sim?

      • hm…

This is BS!….I just received my phone and the plan switched backed to 2gb. Called Verizon they said they do not know about honoring the glitch and will not honor it.
Guess i’m stuck with 2gb and 2 year contract. what a bad business ethic…..

        • Jim Hughett

You said switched “back”. Were you on on the 2gb plan before, or unlimited? What did the paperwork say in the box? Did you check that before you activated? You can always cancel and go back to unlimted. Just have to send that new phone back.

          • Apprentice

yes you definitly need to keep on calling because for me i had unlimited data before deciding to upgrade and then they changed my data to 2gb when i activited my new phone. I called twice cause the first time the lady wasnt helpful … but the second time i called she was really helpful and got my unlimited data back on my account right away. on the spot!

        • tbuchs2001

you need to keep calling, I had to call 3 times

    • Manuel Alvarado

So a bit of an update for us worrying about activation. I talked to a rep, they know all about the glitch and honoring the unlimited. The rep simply said to just activate it over the website and all will be well and, most importantly, untouched.

So, assuming the rep is correct, there shouldnt be a need to cut existing sims and what not. Just activate via the site.

This was a billing rep btw.

      • Manuel Alvarado

Ok guys, gonna recommend just cutting sim if possible. I am currently having an issue activating the new sim, and even though they are honoring the unlimited, it is nothing less than a pain in the ass getting this preinstalled sim activated.

  • Seth Merritt

The timing of this is certainly interesting. Seems pretty convenient.

  • EC8CH

Any chance there will be a similar software issue that will let us order a Nexus 5 on Verizon?

    • Pedro

That would be a hardware issue.

    • Tim Swann

any chance that the Nexus 5 is compatible with VZ? NO! yea…I thought so.

  • Ben Baird

    Hell yeah!!!

  • Phil

I am soooo happy my GNEX is Dead and now I can return the sim cutter also. Kellex is there some sort of official doc from verizon stating this?

  • Nathaniel Newman

Dang! Well atleast I still have a upgrade in June 2014!

  • moelsen8

and now they’ll cancel all of them hahaha.

  • Daniel Clifford

    HELL YES!

  • Jim890

    Is this real life?

    • vwbeetlvr

      Or just fantasy?

      • OnlyNexus

        Caught in a landslide,

        • Adrynalyne

          no escape from reality.

          • FreddieM

            open your eyes…

          • Daddo0711

Look up to the skies and see

          • Droidzilla

            Boom.

          • Adrynalyne

            You broke the chain.

            smh

            πŸ™

          • Droidzilla

If it makes you feel any better, you did manage to get that song stuck in my head. So the combo continues . . . in our hearts.

          • Adrynalyne

            So true…

          • Sean

            I’m still unlimited

          • Charles Hobbs

Best damn comment thread on here ever lol

  • Beto

Of course this happens the weekend I’m away in Vegas.

    • KleenDroid

Yes but if you won a bunch of dough in Vegas you can buy your phone and still be ahead.

  • Dustin Foreman

    Thanks Verizon! Lol

  • Phillies3429

    YESSS

  • Michael Hammond

So is this kind of a heads up that later, even after purchasing retail, unlimited will go away permanently?

    • Dustin Foreman

How do you get that out the statement? It will be just like it was when vzw axed unlimited data 2 years ago. You go month to month on your current plan and buy full retail.

      • EC8CH

because you need to read statements from VZW like you statements from the NSA.

  • Sheneneh Jenkins

    I missed out.

  • ASV505

    Woo-hoo! I love you DL

  • JsinLegacy

This include those who pre-ordered the Note 3?

    • Blue Sun

      Was your order approved?

      • JsinLegacy

well its in process ..they won’t take the money till it ships..but everything went through

        • Jacwhite22

Be interesting to see…..I went with the x because I was concerned about a preorder vs a shipped device.

        • Blue Sun

I hope you get it with your unlimited still intact!

        • 6stringslinger

I also pre-ordered the Note 3. Got an email saying my unlimited is still on the plan. Even got a text from a CSR I talked to about it confirming that I WILL retain unlimited data after I get the Note 3 around Oct 10th.

  • Daniel Flores

    LOL….YES!!!…AWESOME.

  • ßen Murphy

Hmmm, duration of the contract?? Does that mean they can kick you off after?

    • Jason Downing

There’s always that option if you’re month to month so doesn’t really make a difference

    • Phillies3429

      I was thinking that yesterday.

    • chris125

well isn’t that always the case? The effects last the entire contract, after that its no holds with what verizon or any carrier can do

  • PaulSchroeder

    I jizzed.

  • skylog

kellex, can you point to where this was declared? you personally? i would love to have this in case there are some issues. thanks man! for allllllll of this!

    • Verizon PR sent over that note. It’s official.

      • skylog

that is great, was just hoping to see a word publicly. thanks again….for everything! can’t wait for the show this week!

      • mendy817

I just called Verizon and they denied it. I’m sure they sent it over to you Kellen, but they haven’t passed the message to any employees yet, anything I can show to them?

  • vwbeetlvr

I wonder what happens after the two years….. “allowing those customers to retain their unlimited plans for the duration of their contract “

  • Open1Your1Eyes0

This was definitely a planned “issue”. That’s all I have to say.

    • David

you think that they opened a hole to trick unlimited customers into getting into another contract right before we all jumped ship for new nexus?

      • moelsen8

it was too coincidental. end of quarter, waived activation fee. a “glitch” that lasted a day and a half before they shut it down. they’re a huge national corporation. someone has to have access to quickly shut down the site if something this big was happening. suppose someone hacked the site and posted some kind of child porn on the home page or something – you think they’d let it go for 36 hours before finally being able to fix it?

        • drose0

          No waived upgrade fee though.

          • chris125

the waived activation fee comes within 2 billing cycles it said on their site over the weekend

          • drose0

Unless I’m wrong activation fee is not the same as upgrade fee. Perhaps I’m wrong, but my understanding is the upgrade fee is assessed to current customers who upgrade, whereas the activation fee is for new customers. And at the same time, the activation fee waived was for $35, the upgrade fee was $30.

          • chris125

whoops I was thinking of the upgrade fee. Yeah makes sense.

          • 6stringslinger

I had to pay the upgrade fee also, but this morning I called CS and asked them to give me the “VERIZON30” discount that I was not able to enter when I ordered the Note 3. The rep said ok, and just put a $30 credit on my account. Already checked. It’s really on there. Today, just for today, everything is beautiful and I love Verizon.

          • drose0

I couldn’t get that to work either for my Maxx. May try to call them and see if I can get something too, thanks for the tip!

          • 6stringslinger

            Yes sir. Good luck!

    • Colin Huber

I talked to somebody who said it was a promotion, but who the hell knows. Point is, UNLIMITED BABY.

  • Dominic

    Woo! Thanks Verizon

    • dreadnatty08

Went to pick up mine today, said I had to go to tiered. Didn’t push much, probably should have. Oh well.

      • rdcamero

Call customer service.Don’t just roll over.

      • 6stringslinger

Yeah, call customer service and get your unlimited back. If the rep won’t do it or is confused, get a supervisor on the phone. Do NOT back down on this one, upper management at VZW has agreed to let us keep unlimited data.
