New YouTube 5.0 Update Incoming – Entire New Card UI, Watch-While-Browsing Feature, and More

A new update to the official YouTube app on Android has started rolling out as version 5.0.21. To put it simply, the update is huge. It introduces an entirely new card-style UI, a way to continue watching videos while your browse, and more. A reader just tossed it over to us, so we’re digging through with jaws dropped and drool all over our desk. But so far, I think I can safely say that you’ll all be impressed.

It’s rolling out slowly through the terribly obnoxious new staged rollouts app delivery method, so if you want it now, you’ll have to sideload with the link below.

Great update, but YouTube STILL hasn’t updated the comments section to allow for replying to comments, giving thumbs up/down and most importantly, seeing the highest rated comments at the top, similar to the desktop version!

  • disastrousrainbow

I really dig this update in the same way I dug the huge Google+ update. I just wish Google would standardize this look across all its service and especially with the Nexus lineup, particularly the Play Store, Gmail, and the Calendar. Hell, I wouldn’t even mind a card-influenced UI if done right (kind of like webOS but a million times better).

  • saint_stephen

Any way to have the sliding bar to the left show subscriptions by the collections in which they are organized as they are in the web interface rather than just listing all of them?

  • sirmcintyre

    I’ve made $64,000
so far this year working online and I’m a full time student. Im using an
online business opportunity I heard about and I’ve made such great money.
It’s really user friendly and I’m just so happy that I found out about it.
    Heres what I do,www.Jℴℬs34.cℴℳ

  • Steven Vona

I noticed when he opened the chromecast menu that his items were named. Mine says “Google TV1”, “Google TV2”, etc…. How the he11 do you name these things so I know which is which?

    • duke69111

You can rename them using the chromecast app on your phone. I named mine upstairs and downstairs.

      • Steven Vona

I have two Google TV’s… Is there a way to rename them?

        • duke69111

Open the chromecast app, click the first chromecast under your network. At the top it says name, click it and then rename it whatever you want. Repeat for the second one.

  • Thanks Kellen. I don’t know why it’s taking like forever to make it too my phone. The update rolled out yesterday, and I was still sitting on that crappy 4.5.17 update.

  • Jo

thats y i luv android bitches! sideload 4eva

  • Eric Bright

Thank you. I installed and the app looks really so nice.

  • Ryan

Stop introducing yourself in every damn video. We know it’s you. holy ef.

    • Trevor

Male sibling and/or friend, angry is you?

    • Steve B

Dude, he’s being professional. You should try it.

      • Ryan

Yo dude man it’s a blog. Nothing professional about this at all.
You want professional try getting some video production skills, and equipment to properly show off what you’re reviewing since eh that’s what this blog is about right?

Not hating, but just annoying as ef – hey it’s blah blah. Every time I have to skip the first 20 seconds of any video posted on here because I know what’s coming. Just review the damn thing don’t get personal with us.

        • Steve B

A blog that Kellen makes his living off of. Also, he’s not the only one who makes videos for this site, Tim makes them too. It’s common practice and professional to introduce yourself at the begging on a video. Sorry you don’t grasp that. Either way, it doesn’t matter, he’s not listening to your worthless opinion.

          • Ryan

OMGAWD There are standards for doing a video!?!?!? Wow and all of those tech bloggers on youtube have been doing it wrong ever since. Yikes; I’ll refer them to you for the guidelines so they can look professional. Thanks.

FYI if you make your living doing something and you want to be reflected as professional at it then you’re results should reflect it. Refer back to my latter reply about the equipment and production skills. Introducing yourself should be the last of your worries if that’s the case you’re presenting to me.

          • Steve B

            You’re hopeless.

  • Simos Katsiaris

so this the signed version that gets the play store updates?
it’s not modified in any way?

  • Richard Yarrell

The influence of Samsung rules again. You tube is cooking with crisco definitely

    • squiddy20

      1. It’s spelled “YouTube”. It’s spelled right in the article title, throughout the article, and you probably see it multiple times a day since you have nothing better to do with your life. How you screw that up is beyond me…
      2. Wow. So Google took one feature of Touchwiz/Nature UI out of the hundreds of crap options that virtually no one uses, and Samsung “rules again”? What a joke.

  • PuzzleShot

Now if only they’d make it so that the minimized video player stays on screen over other apps like Chat Heads. I’d imagine that you could swipe it up or down to move it around, and swipe it up from the top or down from the bottom to go back to the Youtube app.

Or some Google engineer could figure out a better way to do it.

  • Matthew Mascarenas

    This is way better!!!

  • Mateusz Trocha

    Google who?

  • Mateusz Trocha

Meanwhile on WP8, MyTube is more awesome!

  • Capt. Crunch

I love showing off all my new apps before any of my friends get them. Thanks DL!

  • Knlegend1

I just want to be able to respond to comments better.

    • QwietStorm

      I can’t believe it still doesn’t have a dedicated reply button/feature.

      • Knlegend1

Exactly I hate having to go to the computer to search for the person who responded to me.

  • LionStone

Nice…In your ‘Uploads’ now a much nicer layout…you don’t have to miss that tiny little corner 10x to edit or delete an upload.

  • Ztw1217

Landscape mode for nexus 7 is soooo much better now as well!

  • nsnsmj

Staged rollouts aren’t obnoxious. It’s just that they’re better for developers than they are for end-users. It’s better for an update with a terrible bug to only reach a small amount of users than it is for the problem to reach everyone. They just need to give people the option to opt-in to receiving the updates early.

    • Steve B

Stages rollouts are fine, but if we want to go into the play store and pull the update manually, we should be allowed to. Clearly, if we’re trying to do this, we know what we’re doing. Keep the other 98% of Android users on staged rollouts. Google should allow this.

  • The last 2 staged roll-outs have been merciful to my device. Got G+ and YouTube updates on the first day itself.

  • dgoin21

Why can they put a volume control on screen like Netflix

  • Chippah

When you start a video and shoot it to GoogleTV,
a tiny control window pops up so you can queue the next video,

  • vincent scala

maybe this is kind of a preview of what Android 5.0 might be more like i heard it could be more google now card style which isn’t so bad

  • Mike

How come you didn’t use the Moto X for the app review?

  • Bojan Tomic

Amazing! 🙂 So smooth and the animations are awesome!

  • Chris Lo

Is it just me or do the videos don’t seem as high quality?

    • LionStone

check your settings? It looks like you have to set to start up in high quality…

  • XvierX

I just sent a bug report last night about a problem I was having with youtube on my Note 2. This update fixes it. Nice work Googs. I also love the redesign when watching on my N7.

  • Jon

Wow…I love it. Nice work. Google must have some cool stuff coming this winter for Key Lime Pie. Can’t wait.

  • Kelly OBrien

This is why the DROID LIFE TEAM IS THE SHIZZLE ! We get things like this first ! Thanks DL TEAM

    • Thank the community. If we didn’t have awesome readers sending in these staged rollout updates, we wouldn’t be able to share. 🙂

      • EC8CH

So how do you even pull an apk when the update is sent to you?

That would be an awesome “how to” post that would educate readers and help ensure we can all share in the updates goodies asap.

        • squiddy20

The first (and pretty much only) thing you need is root access, or at least the ability to pull stuff out of /data/app (I think some file browsers are capable of this, even without root). Then it’s a simple matter of uploading the apk file to a file sharing site.

          • Justtyn Hutcheson

All you need is a file browser, no root required. Copy/paste from /system/app or /data/app (depending on if it was a pre-loaded app or not) to your sdcard, then send it to anyone via email. It takes no time at all 🙂

          • squiddy20

But if I remember right, some file browsers aren’t able to even access anything other than the SD card, though the number of those apps is slowly declining.

          • EC8CH

So it’s not like grabbing a system update before applying it. You are just copying the entire APK file after the update has been applied.

            Good to know.

          • Omar

yeah, you need root for that. just reading the data partition requires su or system privileges.

      • Eric Bright

To Droid-Life.com, I’ve updated using your shared APK file and everything is fine. But I have one question: will I be able to receive the real update when it gets rolled out to my region? I’m saying this because I’m currently on the old YouTube app in the “My apps” in Google Play. Thanks.

        • Steve B

When the update is released to you, it will magically appear in your play store. The reason it’s displaying as the old youtube is because your account isn’t supposed to have it yet. Check in a couple days and it should be up to date.

          • Eric Bright

Thank you Steve. I’m in Rwanda and I’ve received the update overnight. As you say, I’ve checked in the morning and it was magically there.

          • Steve B

Yeah, no problem. What are you doing there?

          • Eric Bright

It’s my home. I’m Rwandan and Google addict.

          • Steve B

            Ah gotcha. Cool.

  • blackjaguar25

Damn. That new watch-while-browsing feature is golden. Very nice.

    • Justin W

It’s nice, but I only see myself truly using it if I’m listening to music through Youtube or something like that (on my phone at least). Otherwise, it’s too small for me to actually see what’s going on and it’s a set size, so you can’t force it to be half the screen. I can definitely see using it on a tablet, but I think on a phone, it needs to be similar to Samsung’s mode that can be moved around the screen (is it Air View? Not sure).

  • chris

It would be nice if video’s did not pause when the screen was turned off. Sometimes i just want to listen to a song and not watch the video.

  • BOB Dudek

Dont forget your OLD YT login. ..Uses Google acct to log in.

    • Justin W

What’s the difference? Your Youtube login and G-Account login are the same now unless you opted to not make it the same whenever it was that they did that. I’m pretty sure though by this point Google’s forced everyone to log in with their G-Account.

  • BRIM

Damn…maybe I was the only fan but now it won’t auto rotate even when I have it turned off for the rest of my phone. I hate rotation and never have it on but loved that YouTube still ignored it and rotated.

    • blackjaguar25

That sounds like more of a bug than a feature. So sorry that it’s fixed :/

  • Godzilla

Yahoo weather and new youtube are my favorite apps in a while. I havent even played with youtube yet but just the look of it.

  • Tom Worville

  • EC8CH

    Oh boy… this looks awesome.

    This demands to be sideloaded!

    • EC8CH

Um yeah… so this update is legit.

      Sideload…. DO IT NOW

      • Love self-replies. 😛

        • michael arazan

Roses are red, Violets are blue, I’m schizophranic and so am i

          • sk3litor

You can talk to yourself, you can even answer yourself, it’s when you say -“HUH?”- that you need to worry.

  • BRIM

    Still no comment interactions. Damn.

    • Godzilla

that does suck. They need a disqus style comment section

      • Justin W

This so much. I hate Youtube comments – there’s no clear way to sort or default sort, and I hate that I can’t see a streamlined comments section. Sort by Best, Old, and New would be amazing to help content producers reply and see what suggestions the community is making.

  • kurichan

app icon also changed in the update

    • Omar

      looks much more… subtle.
      Me like.

  • Jroc869, Nexus-Life

this is a really nice upgrade. the flow of the app is so improved. wish there was a way to expand the watch as you browse window but that would be my only complaint.

    • But if you grab and swipe up or stretch it
, it gets bigger or do you mean something else

      • Jroc869, Nexus-Life

well if you swipe up it goes back to normal view, I was kinda wanting to be able to make it bigger at the bottom of the screen and still be able to browse

  • Tyler Casilio

I wonder if we will see the Desktop version taking up this Card look. Me hopes so

    • BOB Dudek

      • Timothy McGovern

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Can we get a dark theme? First think I looked for in the settings was a dark theme…which wasn’t there …womp.

Will check out the app when I get off work though.

  • Tyler Casilio

THIS is what I have been waiting for! Yes!!

  • Daniel

The new app still lets you UPLOAD videos, RIGHT?

    • Tyler Durden

      of course

      • Daniel

you say that, but the iphone app no longer uploads and makes you download the Capture app instead, which also uploads…but yes, it would seem obvious to let the main app do it too

        • Christian

My friend (iPhone user) was telling me about this the other day and I didn’t believe him at first. I don’t know much about iOS, but it seems like the reason for making two separate apps could be to accommodate some weird iOS restriction or API function.

Then again, it could simply be to get iOS users to have more Google apps on their devices.

        • Tyler Durden

          I’m using it, you fool

        • LionStone

yea the YouTube app on the iphone got freaked out or something recently. I sent my buddy a YouTube link and he couldn’t even open it. I said, come on, it’s just a link straight from YouTube…and he got all pissy saying, “sure, it’s always on my end…” He uninstalled and reinstalled from the app store and he could open a link but said it also will not upload.

  • Godzilla

  • Mordy Festinger

Uploads on to youtube are back thank god.

    • LionStone

      Never knew it was ‘off’?

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

When you thumbs up does it auto +1 to g+?

    • Simos Katsiaris

that is actually in the account settings and you can disable it

  • Lsutigers

I wish the Google plus card layout was like this. The transitions are a lot smoother

  • T4rd

Can you reply to comments or click on in-video links yet? Those are two glaring ommisions from the previous YouTube app.

    • Tyler Durden

      • T4rd

        Well that’s a huge oversight then. =(

        • Tyler Durden

yep, hate getting a reply then i have to get on my computer to reply back

  • jbdan

    Terrific! thx

  • Jeff C

Link needs fixing…can we sideload this if not rooted?

    • Tyler Durden

yes, just make sure to go into settings and make sure it’s set to let you download outside sources

      • Jeff C

        Thanks, works like a charm.

      • Festus Haggen

        Offers help. Gets downvoted. LOL

  • Ryan Stewart

The download link just takes me to twitter, which redirects back to this article.

  • Tyler Durden

finally. needed this a long time ago

  • Eric Lega-c Smith

    Umm…Your download link.is wonky..

  • Phil Oakley

    Well this is pretty awesome.
