Download: Android 4.3 OTA Updates for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, Galaxy Nexus

nexus 7 4.3 update

During Google’s Android and Chrome event that took place yesterday in San Francisco, Hugo Barra announced that most of the their Nexus family of phones would start seeing OTA updates to Android 4.3 almost immediately. That list includes the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Galaxy Nexus (GSM). But while these updates technically started yesterday, we know that almost everything involving software at Google these days happens in stages, so you may not be prompted to update for some time. Thankfully, we’re already finding OTA update links, meaning you can manually update today if you’d like.

Download Links (JWR66V):

Nexus 4 | Nexus 7 WiFi | Nexus 7 HSPA+ | Galaxy Nexus (“yakju”) | Galaxy Nexus (“takju”) | Nexus 10

*Note:  In order to update with these files, you need to be running stock Android 4.2.2 (JDQ39).

To update with these files, you have a couple of options:

  1. If you are stock, non-rooted – You can use the “adb sideload” command and make magic happen without root or a custom recovery. We have an entire guide to walk you through this method. It may take a minute to get the Android SDK setup, but that’s something you should have anyway if you own a Nexus.
  2. If you are stock, non-rooted and hate adb sideload – The “adb sideload” command can be a bit finicky, so another way is to use a custom recovery and then flash the OTA file through there. You have two recoveries to choose from:  TWRP or ClockworkMod. You can find a guide for flashing a custom recovery through adb here.
  3. If you are stock, rooted, with custom recovery – You can essentially flash the OTA zip files in recovery and update. If you lose root, hit up this G+ post for instructions on getting it back.

Apparently the N7 HSPA+ is available as I just upgraded.

    • omar

Can you share that update such as zip file? :)

  • Kristoff119

As I was downloading the update, a message popped up telling me that the update was ready to install!

For those seeing the “Warning: No file_contexts” message when attempting to flash the above file on Nexus 10 through CWM or TWRP, this worked for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377022

I used the deodexed version. You can flashed it through CWM or TWRP. I recommend having the latest Chainfire’s SuperSU installed.

  • phathands

Can’t find my device via adb devices command prompt on Win 7 64; after scanning through five more webpages for suggested fixes, several of them not working, I’ve decided to give up for now.

  • Cary Zuber

Link for GSM Galaxy Nexus 4.3 OTA .http://www.teamandroid.com/2013/07/25/update-galaxy-nexus-i9250-android-43-jwr66v-ota-firmware/ Scroll to the bottom of the page, download, then follow the same steps as listed in the original post.

    • Cary Zuber

I should add, i have not tested this, so if this bricks your device its on you.

No sign of the OTA for the Nexus 10?? Third day now and still nothing….. I’m living in the Netherlands. The Nexus 10 will probably be the last to be released I presume….

    • Mark Williams

Updated it with sideload, worked perfect! :-)) Couldn’t wait on Google to pump it for the Nexus, 3 days is just too long! I’m now enjoying JellyBean 4.3 :-))

  • eighteesix

downloaded this. went from rooted 4.2 stock rom. 4.3 works great. new changes are cool. except that i cannot seem to find the new emoji keyboard anywhere. ive looked all around languages and input.

  • Rafael Piton

The stock option with adb will erase my datain n4?

  • enigmaco

So I am rooted and been trying to install this for my nexus 4 and I keep getting a error the recent one I am getting now I believe is /tmp/update.zip error what am I doing wrong. I have tried it in two different recoveries.

  • Scott Wignell

how do you flash the android 4.3 to the clockworkmod recovery?

I have rooted my nexus 4 using the google nexus 4 tool kit but cannot figure out how to copy the zip file in the recovery?

      Me also

      • Nik

I have this problem too. In my case it is because i have build version JDQ39E not JDQ39 and since the downloadable package JWR667 was written for JDQ39, installation fails for JDQ39E. Trying to find out the solution badly !!

        • Nik

Google updated few binaries in JDQ39 and released it with JDQ39E not many are aware as it wasnt rolled out as an update. I bought Nexus 4 just about a month ago.

        • karthik

          JWR66V from JDQ39E –

i had the same problem but downloded the OTA update from below link under JWR66V from JDQ39E –
user NRT 1.6.4 and it works fine. Please ignore if already found

did it the next day of posting this error…followed a similar xda link…thanks for looking back :)

  • http://www.technogeekguy.com dswartze

ok, got 4.3 on my N7 – now what can I do differently!?

  • Kevin

Since updating my N7, I can no longer update or download apps on Google Play. I’m not rooted, any thoughts or ideas?

    • Cary Zuber

Log out of your google account then log back in, that should fix it. My thought is you tried to stop google services framework to force the update, this is an effect from that.

      • Kevin

That’s what I did. Logged out then logged back in,works great now. Thanks for the quick help.

    • michael

Whats the market do when you try?

    • Ray

Remove your entire Google account from your settings, and activate the account back after removal is complete.

  • michael wendling

if your running a nexus device download Nexus root toolkit from http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/, install it pick your device model and and. version then download one of the two files above save it to a specific folder and go in to advaced options and click adb sideload and whether or not you are rooted it will apply the update.

any help? message me at m.wendling.mw@gmail.com

    • Brandon

Thanks! NRT is a nice simple utility with everything you need in one place. Lots of helpfull instructions too!. I was hesitant to look at the “root toolkit” utilites I saw before because I don’t really want to root my device, but this utility is still quite helpfull for sideloading when not rooted!

  • Raven

So, what if I am stock, rooted, but still locked? I am sure, as with most OTA’s, this will remove root, but does anyone know if there is any problems with rerooting via Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper?

  • br_hermon

Of the 3 options, I’m option 3. When I tried to flash this zip in CWM I got a Status & error. What do I do?

    • JohnWinstanley

Same issue here, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

      • br_hermon

Just FYI im still looking for a fix… If I find something, I’ll report back, but I’m almost to the point where I’m going to comletely start over from square 1.

    and if you’re not stock?
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2376978
but thanks for attempting a complete article anyway.

  • Danyal

Will this keep all my current memory on my N4?

  • Windetta

I can wipe date and cache before update?

  • Batman

So… when unlocking the bootloader on my Nexus 4… is it supposed to wipe my phone? Because that just happened :|

    • Neall

Unlocking wipes the phone. Or the tablet.

  • Ryan Stewart

This wont, you will need to reflash the whole image (this is just the update) because your modification will cause this to fail validation.

    • Dominic Powell

any advice on how to revert back to stock kernel, without losing data? The only thing i changed was franco. OR rather any advice on how to return to bone stock.

      • Ryan Stewart

The only thing I have been able to do in the past was the stock image. I tried reverting to stock bit by bit but it kept failing on the update because of some issue with something still not being as expected.

Your other option is to just wait for a custom recovery version, they dont do the same checks as the stock OTA.

  • br_hermon

Not sure how I did it but.. I have two recoveries on my N7. TWRP recovery and CWM. How do I get rid of TWRP? I’m going to guess having the two is going to give me fits when it comes time to flash this OTA. Thanks!

  • http://travelwithoutmap.tumblr.com/ Georgi Kolev

I can not get the update to install. I sideload the update but then the install process terminates after “Verifying update package…” without logging anything else. I downloaded the OTA update 2 times already and both times it didn’t work.

I’m stock, unrooted and with a locked bootloader.

Would appreciate it if someone can help.

    • http://www.joserojas.org José Rojas

i am not sure, but in other sites says that we need to unlock the bootloader first…

      • http://travelwithoutmap.tumblr.com/ Georgi Kolev

I thought so too but then I saw threads about sideloading OTA updates that said the locked bootloader was not a problem.

Well I guess we’ll have to wait for someone to confirm.

        Thanks anyway @androidvenezuela:disqus

      • Cary Zuber

I just did this with my nexus4 and it worked perfectly. My bootloader is locked.

    • Cary Zuber

Just to verify you are using the OTA images from this post, correct? If you are attempting to do this with the stock images you get from Google it will fail.

      • http://travelwithoutmap.tumblr.com/ Georgi Kolev

Never realised this Cary Zuber. Thanks for the clarification. I’m currently downloading the updates from here and will try again in a couple of minutes.

      • http://travelwithoutmap.tumblr.com/ Georgi Kolev

Well this was indeed the root of the problem.

        I finally updated successfully.

Google OTAs didn’t work but the update from this page patched everything and installed without a problem.

        Thanks again Cary Zuber!

      • alex

The OTA images are the ones in the article after “Download links: …”?

I get the same error as Georgi with this file. Any ideas?

        Thanks for the help!

  • Bionic

    Hellz yeah, rebooting now

  • enigmaco

This has been a good week for android, can’t wait to get home and load this on my nexus 4.

    • sroluis

      Start working at
home with Google! It’s by-far the best job Ive had. Last Monday I got a new
Alfa Romeo from bringing in $7778. I started this 9 months ago and
practically straight away started making more than $83 per hour. I work
      through this link,>>>>>>>> www.bar28.com

      • chris420o

        please die

  • Kevin Gallagher

Tried flashing the file in custom recovery and it failed. I am stock rooted. What am I missing here?

    • kevd

Same problem. Anyone have any advice?

      • Cary Zuber

where did it fail? Did it fail in adb? or did your device fail to apply the update?

  • http://www.joserojas.org José Rojas

Do i need to have an unlocked bootloader? Or isn’t required?

  • AnotherAndroidKid

Welcome to the 4.3 party N4 and N7.

  • Jonathan Mallett

Bring on Nexus 7 3G OTA :). That thing needs the update more than my N4 (which I am side-loading as I type this message xD )

  • patelj27b

Do these instructions also work for the Galaxy Nexus?

    • Stewie

Are you really that dumb to try an OTA for another device on your GNex?

      • kretz7

hopefully, he meant, once the OTA is released for the GNex, do the instructions still apply…

    • Steve Benson

      Oh boy….

    • monkeypox69

      Derp!

  • saint_stephen

Sideloaded the OTA for my Nexus 4 yesterday and my Nexus 7 this morning.

Noticeable performance improvement on the Nexus 7.

    • Steve Benson

Could be placebo, but my N7 seems a bit snappier and less laggy after the update as well. We’ll see after a day or two.

  • http://www.giridhar.co.in Giridhar

4.3 available for the original Nexus 7 3G as flashable zip file ow.ly/njyqZ

  • CasperTFG

Thanks Kellex. Us stock N10ers are standing by.

    • BrianCherry

Wow stock N10 user. You sir are a trooper.

      • kretz7

Stock N10 user as well – just because you have a nexus doesn’t mean you have to root it.

        • BrianCherry

I’m not always Nexus’s have to be rooted. I’m just saying when I was using my Nexus 10 stock, it was unbearable.

          • kretz7

Gotcha, haven’t noticed anything too unbearable. What did you experience?

          • BrianCherry

Definitely some RAM issues. Just starting my N10 I would only get about 200-300mb left out of the 1.2 available.

          • davesousa

I have actually been considering rooting but haven’t found a good enough reason to do so. or a method easy enough to actually attempt it.

What would you say are the top reasons to root and the top N10 methods.

I rooted my HTC Hero back in the day and it took weeks of research and learning but i was eventually able to figure it out well enough that I was helping other people. I just don’t want that stress of bricking in my life any more lol….

          • BrianCherry

Actually is pretty easy now to root device. http://nexus10root.com/
Some of the reason why I root my device was better performance and battery life from the ROMs themselves. Being able to use rooted apps, like Adblock, Root Explorer, etc. More customization over the whole android device from system themes to performance tweaks. (Overclock for even better performance or underclock for an even more imporved battery life). And of course trying out different software, Ubuntu Touch, Touchwiz, Sony Xperia skin, Sense, and different ROMs; AOKP, CyanogenMod, Paranoid Android.

          • davesousa

            What is your favorite ROM?

          • BrianCherry

On a Nexus 10, for me the Most staple is AOKP. I’ve never had an issue with their ROMs. Then Paranoid Android, but i’ve had issues before updating the ROM (but definitely not a big negative). Maybe its just my tablet but CyanogenMod (what I’m currently running)has had constant issues.

          • Chidoc

Rooted my first Android (Nexus 7)….. I admit I was scared of bricking it, but the really good apps seem to require root access.

          • theboat

            Tethering

        • evltwn

Agreed, stock N7 here waiting for the update as well. Wi-Fi/3G version.

        • Ryan Stewart

Im like you. Once I got vanilla android and didnt have to wait 6 months for an update I kind of forgot about rooting.

        • starnovsky

Exactly this. My Nexus 4 is my first Android phone which I didn’t root at the earliest convenience. Why bother?

      • CasperTFG

I use GOOD for work. And I don’t want to have to hide root. My toro is unlocked and rooted.

    • Cary Zuber

Nexus 10 OTA has been posted.

      • CasperTFG

Mary, mother of baby Jesus, halleluiah!

  • Brandon Golway

Now only if I could find my Nexus 7….. I haven’t used it in two months since I got my Galaxy S4.

  • Hothfox

If these are OTA updates, it won’t wipe the phone, will it?

    • n7 master

      No wipe

  • mmoreimi

Option #3 – Stock, rooted, custom recovery – Flash OTA in recovery

I always get confused if this process will wipe the phone. Also, will this “break” root?

    Thanks!

    • n7 master

      No wipe, may break root.

      • Shrini

I was stock, root and stock recovery.

        Used NRT (wugfresh) for

        1. NRT…’Launch’…’Sideload Update’…and selected downloaded 4.3 ‘update’ file.. (approx 173mb)..succefully updated to 4.3 and…. ‘root’ broken. Then…

        2. Continued in NRT,..( select build, still.. as 4.2.2 JDQ39 in the NRT settings…so no change, despite now having 4.3) And ‘Launch’…’Flash Zip on this computer’….

( you will need to download in advance SuperSU zip for 4.3..search..it’s there)

and Boom….I’ve 4.3 and rooted and still on stock recovery…eligible for all forthcoming OTAs..:)

        • nend

Worked like a charm, same setup. Unlocked with root and everything else was stock. I lost root on the update though but the device is still unlocked. I think I will stay with no root for now anyways.

        • jewvee

thanks so much !! im glad i scrolled down to read on before i attempted this stock 4.3 ROOTED!!!

  • JoeDirt2217

    Does sideloading wipe data?

    • Steve Benson

      no

      • JoeDirt2217

        Cool. Downloading now then.

        • Steve Benson

Yeah, I did it this morning. Super easy.

After it goes to 100%, you have to wait a bit for the bar at the bottom to fill up. Mine took about 5 minutes, then it went back to the stock recovery menu and you can reboot.

  • Steve Benson

Did my Nexus 7 with the ADB sideload earlier this morning and it worked perfect.

  • Erstam

I updated it on my N7 and N4. Def speed improvements on both. Then I got annoyed last night with all of the AOKP mods that i used that didn’t exist on stock and went back to 4.2. I guess I’ll wait for CM or AOKP to update.

  • sc0rch3d

did google give an ETA when it the “old” N7 would receive the OTA update using the standard method? Yes, I can root and etc. fairly easy….just lazy today. :)

    • Tommy Thompson

It’s already rolling out. That’s how we have them to install now…

      • sc0rch3d

Check Now, Check Now, Check Now, Check Now….. nothing :(

        • Tommy Thompson

          staged rollout. ;)

        • CasperTFG

Same here. Also, wary about clearing Services Framework after I had issues accessing Play Store last time I did that.

          • Nick V

That happened to me yesterday. I cleared the framework, and none of my updates would install. The error was, RPC:S-5:AEC-0

I tried everything, but the only thing that worked was removing my account from the phone, and then reentering it. I am back up and running now with 4.2.2

          • http://travelwithoutmap.tumblr.com/ Georgi Kolev

Having the same issue at the moment! Will try reentering my account.

        • saint_stephen

You don’t need to root to apply the OTA link above. Two basic adb commands are all you need to push the update zip file. :-)
