DROID ULTRA, DROID MAXX and DROID Mini Have Locked Bootloaders

droid ultra black3

A Motorola rep has confirmed to us that the bootloaders on the new DROID ULTRA, DROID MAXX and DROID Mini devices will in fact, be locked. No surprise here, folks.

  • joejoe5709

Not surprising and just another reason why it’s always Nexus for me.

  • Nick

Perhaps you mean they have a signed bootloader? All phones have a locked bootloader, even Nexus phones.

  • abuelo56

    Was JLO there?

    • Sirx

Duh! Who do think they got to pick all the new faaaaaahhhhhnnnnts, and the coluuuuuuuuurrrrrrs?

  • David Narada Brown

    well there went that ship!

  • FeMan

    Gasp! Oh wait, it’s Verizon… 🙁

  • David Wanless

Of course it’s locked, even nexus devices have a locked bootloaders when they are shipped. The question is whether they can be unlocked.

the answer to that question is probably still no though

  • Steven Webb

I cannot believe this! I didn’t think Verizon would do such a thing….

    ….said no one ever

  • MichaelFranz

Someone get djrbliss on the phone now……we need to unlock this bad boy ASAP!! I would not be surprised if there is a crazy bounty. In my opinion right now this phone (Maxx) beats out moto X. Shun me if you want but the 5 inch screen and same specs make it more appealing to me. I am still going to wait until after the X is annouced to see what happens. I have 2 upgrades due so i may end up with both.

    • Ryan

After looking at the specs, seems Motorola used mostly the same parts for their new Droid line that is also in the Moto X. Course, the main difference of the Ultra and Maxx is a bigger screen and different batteries. But since I don’t want to be holding a pseudo-tablet in my hand, I think the Moto X will be perfect for me. But I’m sure all these new phones will be fairly successful, especially if the user experience can beat out even the most current phones like the GS4 and HTC One or LG G2.

I do wonder whether his Motocalypse or MotoChopper (whatever it was he called his last two before exiting stage left) exploits would be effective on these devices…

  • Bi0nic

Just got info from Sarge. Today is Tuesday and my farts still smell.

  • ToddAwesome

Water is wet, the sky is blue, women have secrets. No surprises here.

  • Chris Schmucker

The first developer to change the voice file on the phone to Jarvis’ voice from Iron Man will be my hero

  • DanSan

somebody go get my surprised face…

  • Scott Wood

Going to the Ubuntu Edge and not looking back.

    • See you in 10 months.

    • ROS

It does look sooo nice imo

  • William_Morris

Knock me over with a feather.

  • antinorm

Will Motorola’s bootloader unlock program cover these devices?

  • speraider430

Where’s my boy Bionic with the unlocked bootloader prediction?

    • Bionic

I said that for the moto x

      • For once, I hope you’re right.

      • jose

Just got off the phone with Sarge. He said it will be locked on Verizon.

        • Ej McCarty

Just got off the phone with Sarge. He said he will have to call me back because he was about to “enter” Bionic.

  • yummy

    Cartoon: Three backroom
    gangsters, G, V, and M, dividing up a huge
    pile of cash.
    Caption: “Unlocked bootloaders!”
    Cue maniacal laughter./////
It would be funny, if it wasn’t, you
know, so the other thing. Sad. Yeah, sad.

  • Uncle Paul

If the Note 3 is Locked or other shenanigans,
    I’m Audi 5000 with VZW…

    • Brandon Golway

You should just do it now and stop waiting, you know it’s going to happen.

    • Fozzybare

the note 2 was locked…Adam Outler saved us

  • UpdatesFromHTCAreAJoke

So this is basically a refresh of the 2012 line. Lame

    • Blue Sun

We all knew pretty much knew that months ago. Nothing shocking here.

      • UpdatesFromHTCAreAJoke

Yeah, not really, but there was a glimmer of hope within me that El Goog being in the play would change things

        • ddpacino

Verizon contract. Hoping Moto X doesn’t serve same fate, outside of Verizon though.

          • UpdatesFromHTCAreAJoke

Yeah, that would be a pity. The mighty El Goog felled by evil Verizon 🙁

  • schoat333

Developer edition then? Oh wait, that won’t be out until 2014 and be sold out in a week.

  • LiterofCola

  • Verizon

    • Lucky Armpit

Don’t care about locked bootloader. Just want root. 🙂 But you’re 100% right, no great surprise there.

  • Iron_Catastrofe

Hopefully no one acts all shocked about this. This was very much expected, even phones like the S3/S4 had locked bootloaders prior to any methods released on unlocking it.

  • Ramana

Sadly, all this control showed by verizon just dampens hope for me on the x phone on verizon. It ll be there, but it ll be locked, insanely priced off contract and probably loaded with bloat.

    • hkklife

Locked, yes. Insanely priced off contract, yes. Loaded with bloat, no. That is the one area where I see Google being able to squeeze Verizon a little bit

      • UpdatesFromHTCAreAJoke

So great, we get a locked over-priced version of a device we won’t have control over! But hey, no bloat, right?

        • NexusPhan69

          You forgot delayed in there.

      • sski66

According to Android Community & other sites the MotoX is suppose to be $300- $350 16g-32g, OFF CONTRACT on all [4] carriers.

    • David Narada Brown

These are the “DROID” family of phones. verizon pratically owns them. The “X” phone is seperate from these devices. It wouldnt make since for Moto to make an X phone for verizon if it werent different from these droids. The X phone will be just as stated in the post. it will be the same across all carriers.

  • Mike

In other news, Grass is still green.

    • Sequence of Sound…

      literally, but not metaphorically. 😛

    • michael arazan

      MMmmmm Grass

      • michael arazan

I have had purple grass before from the Kona Coast of Hawaii

  • Lucas Tetrault

    And the hits keep coming!

  • Guy Pierce

    For now!

    • staticx57

Having a phone that is nothing special and a locked bootloader is not a way to really jumpstart development on it.

  • s23

hahah tim gotcha. Best article ever

    • Bastard! lol 😉

    • CasperTFG

Saw it…classic. Was about to comment but, the post was pulled.
