Download: New Stock Camera App From Google Play Edition Phones

New Android Camera

After posting the new boot animation and SunBeam live wallpaper from the new Google Play Edition phones, we made mention of the camera app with its new UI being the next on our list to get a hold of. At that time, it wasn’t available, however, we knew it wouldn’t take long with this good of a community. Late last night, the camera .apk from the GPe phones was made available, and appears to work on any phone without root. I installed it on my HTC One without issue (pictured above). In fact, I was able to snap a Photo Sphere, Panorama, video, and regular photo like you would hope.

This camera also comes with the stock Android gallery.

To install, download the file to your phone tap on it when it finishes, and then install. It should show up in your app drawer with the stock camera icon. If you have a Nexus, it will more than likely replace your current camera.

I am not able to use photosphere and it makes my Note 8.0 reboot. Does anyone know how to uninstall it?

  • ankur

i have a android 4.2 phone but its stock camera app does not have photosphere feature
when installing, it says app not installed
it might be because the camera provided is of the same version
can you please change the internal name of apk?
    thanks

  • michaeljc70

I have a Nexus 4. Is this the same camera I have or what does it add?

  • Alvin

Photo Sphere not working on my Xperia L… just have 3 modes…

  • Corey Marrier

Does it freeze for anyone else when switching from photosphere to normal? Happening to me on GS3 running CM 10.1. On the plus side I can at least use the new gallery to view all my G+ backed up photos without another app.

  • Maxime

    Won’t install on Nexus S (i9020)

  • bari khan

Update is most awaited one, I always had problem with the camera. I slide it get into gallery and end up with camera settings.

It will be great if few more features like micro snaps added to this, S3 is bundled with many such features.

Thank you for the update, I’m lovin it…;)

    Waiting for android 5

    Nexus 4 User.

  • Christopher Garofalo

Works great on razr hd but no way to set the save location. Boooo

  • droidrazredge

Has anyone been able to figure out how to add this camera app to the lock screen and replace the default camera app that comes with 4.2?

    • joejoe5709

I’m not sure… My Nexus replaced the lock screen too.

  • Khary Anderson

For those running CM10.1 (and I presume other AOSP roms), you have to first delete the gallery2.apk from systems/apps before you install or you’ll get a force close when taking a auto focus picture. Someone explained the exact method if you scroll down to the other comments.

  • jessica

On nex7…lost ability to use camera, no app icon anywhere…help

  • DavionHarvey

Can someone please tell me how to install this !!!

  • Cory

I’m getting a FCC when trying to edit pictures

  • vlkers7171

Am I the only one who can’t find HDR. Is that removed in the camera app?

  • Dennis

How to set the save path for the pictures? I want them to be saved in sd card.

    Thanks

I am searching the google play store on my motorolla razor M what keyword search will get it? When I do ‘camera’ I’m just not sure which one to choose.

  • DavionHarvey

It won’t install! Can someone please explain or help? BTW I have a Galaxy Nexus CM 10.1

  • Clean Toronto

Worked great on an older motorola Xoom tablet running 4.1.2. Photosphere perfectly functional!

  • Trevyn Beck

Won’t install on Asus tf300. Help?

  • Dave Carr

Finally one can use a real button to take a picture now. :D

  • Carlos Rivera

Say’s App didn’t install… Any ideas why? Verizon S4 on PacMan Rom.

    • droidrazredge

Try installing it again I got that messages the first time I tried to install it as well. You might also have to disable the stock camera app. Try the former first then the latter.

  • blackmagick20

Anyone know how to save the images to SD with this app?

  • Mauricio Sanchez

I have a rooted Galaxy S3 running CM10.1. The .apk won’t install on my phone, I guess it doesn’t work for non-Nexus devices? :(

  • KDC

working great on my stock gs3 been waiting for photosphere since it came out in November.Google needs to keep it up and let everyone with a capable phone be able to download and install the newest features that they add to their apps

  • Carlos Frias

Just installed this on stock Razr Maxx… Gosh that Moto Camera was ugly.

  • Jaxon Wright

Well, I got this working on CM10.1 on my razr….but now my camera saves to my internal storage, and there’s no option to change. :

  • Roger W Turner

Appears to update Gallery. Doesn’t do anything to stock camera. What am I doing wrong? (N4 on stock 4.2.2)

  • PhilyP

I can tell that these photos are cropped 8mp using this camera. The stock touchwiz camera has a wider field of view.

  • WickedToby741

If this works without a hitch on unrooted devices, doesn’t that almost certainly mean that Google is looking to move more standard Android applications to the Play Store? First was Google Keyboard, next up Google Camera, Google Launcher, and Google Lockscreen? If Facebook Home can takeover the look of skinned Android, what’s stopping Google from doing the same?

    • Steve Benson

      It’s looking very likely.

  • Gardner

still the horrible lag when rotating the camera. what’s wrong with Google? they got it right in 4.1, why break it?? the camera is so slow now

  • Roberto Catalani

Question: how do I set the new Gallery app as default? is quiet anoying that everytime I try to for example upload a photo in Whatsup, it asks me everytime which app uses (stock SII gallery or this new gallery).
    Thanks for the help!

  • Eric Matthew Woodrum

Tried installing on my rooted S3 with Cm10.1, and it’s telling me that it won’t install because there’s another app with the same name. Anyone have similar trouble?

    • Steve Benson

Yeah, you have to disable the existing gallery before you can install.

  • Steve S.

Way better than what is on my stock Razr, but common’ no photo sphere? Why’s that?

    • Knlegend1

Really then I’m not going to bother with it.

  • DavionHarvey

I can only launch the camera via the lockscreen widget but when I unlock my phone and try to use the app it crashes as well does the galley! Anyone else expierecing this problem? Is there a fix perhaps??

    • droidrazredge

What phone are you using ? I just added it to the lock screen and tried to launch it just now but I have been launching it from the apps menu since I installed it earlier this afternoon.

  • Marc C

Can’t seem to get photosphere working on my bionic. Anybody?

    • Steve Benson

It’s because you have a bionic. Sorry bro.

    • droidrazredge

Our phones don’t have a Gyroscope which is required to access and use the features that Photosphere has.

  • AngryTurd

I’m not getting the photo sphere option on my D4 with this. Is there a way to do that?

    • Steve Benson

      Too old.

    • endurotech

It does not work because the D4 does not have a gyroscope

  • Matt

Works on my Droid DNA :)

  • Justin

Photo Sphere does not work when downloaded to original Droid Razr :-( I was really hoping to check out that feature and play around with it, I do like the time lapse option in recording mode though. I can make some cool videos of the sun rising or setting and other ideas I have :-) Thanks DROID LIFE for the .apk download link :-)

  • Michael Villalobos Gomez

How do I zoom in and zoom out? What about GPS tagging?

    • Steve Benson

      Pinch to zoom.

For GPS tagging, tap the menu button or hold on the screen > More options > location.

  • Mark Faustino

Downloaded and successfully installed on OG Droid RAZR. No Photo Sphere though :(

    • droidrazredge

I’m wondering if it is because we’re not on 4.2.2 but I’m not entirely sure. What are your thoughts ?

      • Mark Faustino

Can features be tied directly to the OS version? If so, I guess that’s our answer…

        • droidrazredge

It can’t be our hardware because the G-Nexus can use Photosphere and they have similar hardware components. I thought it was software but some guy down below said it works on his Razr HD so now I’m at a lost for why it does not work :(.

          • KDC

if the phone doesn’t have a gyroscope photosphere wont work

          • droidrazredge

That would be the reason why. Thank you kind sir :).

          • KDC

            no problem here to help.

      • Steve Benson

You don’t have to be on 4.2.2. I’m on 4.2.1 and stock touchwiz and it works fine. As long as you’re on some form of JB, it should work.

        • Knlegend1

That contradicts everything you’ve been saying about their phones being too old.

          • Steve Benson

I should add, your phones hardware needs to be able to support photosphere. Is your device ARMv6? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1596800

Photosphere won’t work on those devices.

          • droidrazredge

That could be why my phone does not support it and the Razr HD and Razr M does. >.< That sucks for me then :(. But then it works on the G-Nexus. Isn't that similar hardware to the Razr(OG) ? They both use TI OMAPS.

  • Willie D

Cant download it, I get a parse error.

  • CiDhed

On CM10.1 I had to put it in the System directory on my One. Photosphere doesn’t work and it loses all of the CM10.1 features such as voice activation and JPEG quality settings.

    • Steve Benson

That’s because the CM10.1 isn’t the stock google camera. CM builds its own camera.

      • CiDhed

I’m aware of that. I was just making sure other people who try to use this on CM know that the CM camera is better.

        • Steve Benson

Ha, it works my friend. If you’re trying to make sure people are informed why don’t you give your device so people can make an informed decision. For most people, with capable devices, this app is working perfectly fine.

          • CiDhed

Actually, I did give them information on how to do it. It would not install on the latest M7 CM10.1 nightly. I had to rename the gallery2.apk and move the apk to the system directory to get it to work. The “On CM10.1 I had to put it in the System directory on my One. Photosphere doesn’t work” part of my first post stated all this. I accept your pending apology.

          • Steve Benson

            NM.

          • CiDhed

            “System directory on my One”

            I did.

  • Jimmy Debacher

    Does it not support HDR?

  • Newb

Is there a reason I’d want to use this over my stock GS3 camera?

    • Droid Ronin

Samsung camera > Google camera. If there is anything on Touchwiz that is worth keeping, it would be the camera.

    • William Pomeroy

Photosphere. Google is the only one that has that feature. So I’d use this camera alongside the GS3 one.

      • Newb

Thanks. I’ll have to Google this photoshere feature to see what the hype is about.

  • Droid Ronin

Only 5 megapix limit on this camera, whereas my stock camera is higher.

    • Steve Benson

8m here. That’s a limitation of your hardware.

  • http://ramonnavarro.tumblr.com Ramon Navarro

No HDR mode, Scene mode is completely messed up with wrong labelling, is this how it looks on Google Play Edition Galaxy S4 and HTC One phones? ….but i’m seriously loving PhotoSphere mode!

  • Khammy

Well, took the leap and installed it on my Rooted Bionic running 4.1. No photosphere, as expected, but the rest is looking nice.

  • Timothy Sternig

I really don’t like how when selecting options how the next option keeps stacking on top of the previous one. Unless you start from the bottom of the camera screen most times your options end up going off the top of the screen. Kind of sucks. I think the previous circular options was a better way of doing it.

    • Steve Benson

Seriously? People always need to bitch about something. Three options: 1) change the way you hold your phone. 2) Use the menu button at the bottom, to the right of the shutter. 3) Don’t use this app.

      • Timothy Sternig

        Let’s see… I’ll go with what’s behind option #3 Mr. Douche!

If I find something on this site that is useful or that I like I’ll say what I liked about it. If I tried something and I didn’t like it I’ll say what I didn’t like about it and give an explanation why.

If I was just “bitching” it would be more along the lines of, “That camera is a P.O.S. I hate it.” There would have been no constructive criticism. Just a hateful rant.

I’ve shown this camera to a handful of people now and they’ve all agreed with what I said about the controls. It’s something people are going to “bitch” about, so I guess just get used to it…

  • Ted Ellis

Still a no go on my S3 running CM 10.1 (even side loading and moving the app didn’t work).

  • RoadsterHD1

I love this camera. Real nice edition to my Bionic. Works GREAT!!!

    • Khammy

      I agree! :)
