Download: New Stock Camera App From Google Play Edition Phones

New Android Camera

After posting the new boot animation and SunBeam live wallpaper from the new Google Play Edition phones, we made mention of the camera app with its new UI being the next on our list to get a hold of. At that time, it wasn’t available, however, we knew it wouldn’t take long with this good of a community. Late last night, the camera .apk from the GPe phones was made available, and appears to work on any phone without root. I installed it on my HTC One without issue (pictured above). In fact, I was able to snap a Photo Sphere, Panorama, video, and regular photo like you would hope.

This camera also comes with the stock Android gallery.

To install, download the file to your phone tap on it when it finishes, and then install. It should show up in your app drawer with the stock camera icon. If you have a Nexus, it will more than likely replace your current camera.

  • Hoochimus

Does any know if this fixes camera connect issues with the CM10.1 release for verizon gs3? it’s a long shot but i’m curious

  • Jacob Wilson

I can’t get it to work with cm10.1 on oppo find 5

  • housetiger77

Works great on the HTC Rezound. No problems, so far.

  • master94

Anything is better than the motto one

  • binqker

Installed this on my S4 and I tell you, Its freaking awesome! love the Sphere mode! No Issues so far!

    • jessem1323

Did it install along side the Touchwiz camera or did it replace the Touchwiz camera?

  • Andy

Sort of works on my S3. Only thing is, when i click different options on screen. It’s like off a little bit.

  • PhillipNorris

This won’t install on my note 2 running Liquid smooth 4.2.2….trying to install it from dropbox if that matters.

  • DMBatCOFC

Any idea how to save to SD?

  • Alexander Anteneh

this is all i needed from 4.3…this and bluetooth 4 but they can take their time now and i dont care

  • Jon

Is it worth like it for the gs4 I kinda like the fact you c an use both cameras at once on it, what do you guys think

    • DanSan

ill use it just for photo sphere, but stock samsung camera for everything else

      • beerme828

i would give anything for JUST a photo sphere app. I actually prefer the samsung camera app, but photo sphere is too damn nice.

Meh. More than happy with the stock camera app on my GN2. Can someone post a reason as to why this might be better? I’ll certainly consider it…..

    • Ajmcnicol

Sphere mode is awesome..its 360 panaroma

  • jeff manning

Quick tap where you want to change the focus point

  • jeff manning

Quick tap where you want to change the focus point

  • br_hermon

So this can get installed on 4.1.2 right?

  • br_hermon

So this can get installed on 4.1.2 right?

  • Evan Jenkins

just keeps saying “app not installed”

  • Kyle DeVaney

I wonder if this will work on my Droid X? I sure do miss my GNex.

  • http://www.twitter.com/SexciiP JaQuez Avondre

All in all I just wanted it so I can utilize the photo sphere feature without root :-D

  • Seth

Works great on my Razr HD. Shows up as a separate camera app and a separate gallery app. Although HDR is available in my phone’s stock camera app, it is not available in this new camera app.

    • droidrazredge

Are you getting the photosphere too on your Razr HD ?

  • valapsp

    Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_CONFLICTING_PROVIDER]

    Nexus 7.

  • Lakerzz

Any way to get messages to show up as a sharing option in the gallery on the HTC One? Love the stock gallery, but can’t share with messaging app from the gallery.

  • ~dArK.AnGeL

    OG RAZR;
Download will only install the Gallary;. No camara! HELP

    • http://labs.webdiastutoriais.com/ Hugo Dias

Check your app drawer again.. theres a new camera icon.

  • Roberto Catalani

Just a question, is ok to have just 4 different kind of Scene Modes? in my stock S2 camera app I had like 6 or 7 can’t remember…

  • valapsp

    love u droidlife.

  • Chad Brockman

Gallery has a new edit option on the bottom left

  • Josh Blaylock

Installed on my Atrix HD just fine, but no photosphere…..that stinks

    • Josh Blaylock

I suppose the lack of a gyroscope is to blame.

  • Ben Pasternak

It works on my RAZR maxx HD and I disabled my stock camera and gallery and now the new camera shows up on my lock screen short cut totally awesome

    • Josh Blaylock

Ben, do you get the photosphere option? I didn’t on Atrix HD.

      • Ben Pasternak

        Sure did worked perfect!

  • Steve Benson

HOLY S! Works on my stock rooted GSIII (VRBMF1).

Photosphere, pano, video, they all work! Wow, seriously impressed Google. This has gotta be heading to the Play Store.

Now on to test out quality vs. stock TW camera.

Edit: The picture taking animation is nice and smooth too!

  • Ryuuie

    Hey guys.

Hit the Volume Button when in the Camera app.

    You’re welcome. :3

    • Steve Benson

      Wow, nice find!

      • Ryuuie

Can’t take all the credit. :)

Found it after a couple people posted it on G+.

        Certainly is awesome though!

        • Steve Benson

Yip, people have been asking Googs for this for years.

        • IrishSid

Just tell us what it does

          • Ryuuie

            Um…it takes a photo. ._.

Nexus devices now have a sort-of dedicated camera button.

          • IrishSid

Oh, like every other phone? K

          • Ryuuie

Yes, like every other phone that’s not a Nexus. :v

            …until now!

          • oxy-moron

What a bitch….you just like one of those broads …when you whip out the anaconda..they say “10 inches…thats it??!”…whore

          • Rob

            Like my SGS3, right?

    • Chris Stuart

Nice find. I actually like the onscreen shutter though because when u click the volume it moved the phone a little. It’s just not a soft enough button

    • Chris Stuart

Nice find. I actually like the onscreen shutter though because when u click the volume it moved the phone a little. It’s just not a soft enough button

      • Ryuuie

Yeah, that is true. I suppose this is good for super quick shots (I’m not 100% sure on this)? I like the on-screen button too but this is also nice. :)

      • Waschlappen

You can hold down the volume button while it focuses and it will snap the image upon release. I think this makes it a bit softer. On GS3

    • Brandon Golway

I’m currently on a TW ROM, what does it do? Zoom in and out?

      • Ryuuie

        It takes a photo. :)

        • Brandon Golway

Thanks, I saw that in the other article title that kellex posted :) It’s about damn time they did this, I missed the dedicated camera button on my OG Droid.

  • Bretton Key

Does this camera come with a voice command option for taking pictures?

I find that feature very handy in my S3 and Note 2.

    • Pratik Holla

Nope, has a new timer feature though!

    • Ricardo Rodriguez

No those are samsung features. This is stock basic Android camera.

  • http://aesirgaming.com John Cantrell

It works on Verizon GS3 non-root!!!! YAY!!!

  • Pratik Holla

Running Tmo gs3 here. No issues so far. Nice thing is, no need to manually focus before taking a pic as i had to do before with previously flashed 4.2 camera from XDA.

Can anyone tell me if there is anything missing feature wise compared with the nexus/GE phone versions?

Also quick Tip: you can do a complete photo-sphere now regardless of orientation. So no more gaping holes on the top and bottom.

    • sean carey

how? never saw photo sphere option

      • Pratik Holla

Click on the camera icon on the lower left. The top option is the photo sphere mode. Works best on newer devices though

  • PhilyP

    few questions.
    1. How do I set my default gallery app.
    2. How do I set the location of where my photos are saved?

    • DanSan

if might have to freeze the original gallery apk and this will take over.

as far as the storage location, cant find a setting for it. all the photos are being saved to internal storage. not surprised since nexus devices dont have expandable memory

    • droidrazredge

Yup DanSan is correct you have to freeze the original gallery apk and camera app so this will take over as the default for everything.

  • Ricardo Rodriguez

pretty cool. worked fine with me. for the most part. i wonder if you can save photos to SD card?

    • PhilyP

yes sd card…how do you get your photos to save here?

      • Bojan Tomic

You can’t, because Nexus devices don’t have SD cards…

  • BeLogical

    Works on stock verizon S4

    • jessem1323

Did it install along side the stock camera or did it replace it?

      • BeLogical

        Yep

  • http://www.getintonursing.com/ Jon

I hope that Google separates out the Camera App from Android as a Play Store download. They are doing so well getting all of their apps free from Android.

I’m still looking forward to the SMS and Camera apps to make this transition.

    • carlisimo

There’s a difference though… the camera app might be the only one where Touchwiz and Sense are widely believed to have better equivalents. The stock app isn’t nearly as popular as the other stock apps.

  • Androphoner

Work it with the Nexus 7 to?

    • geedee82

      ? lol

    • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

The Nexus 7 has a built in camera application but it is just hidden. You have to download an app from the Play Store called, “Nexus 7 Camera Launcher” (it is completely free).

  • Rocketjrb

Shutter lag, transition lag, and the video quality is awful even at 1080P.
I’ll stick with the S4 stock camera app for now.

  • DanSan

downloading right now, curious if it will work on my stock, rooted VZW GS4

    • DanSan

Installs fine, photo sphere works, panorama works.

Video is the only thing that is horrible. the quality is complete crap.

      • DanSan

also my original gallery app seems to have been renamed since there is a conflict of gallery app names

      • Pratik Holla

Same here, video quality is very grainy. Dont know why….. :(

        • DanSan

yea no big deal. i love the stock samsung camera app, i will only be using the AOSP one for photo sphere

      • Steve Benson

Must be something up with the S4. Video is crystal clear on the S3.

        • anezarati

video quality good on my n4

  • Lupe Fiasco

Is anyone getting the HDR mode on the app? I installed it but I don’t have the option for HDR.

    • Christian

Most phones don’t have support for Google’s HDR in the stock camera app. What phone do you have?

      • Lupe Fiasco

        Galaxy Nexus.

        • Christian

Me too. Unfortunately our hardware doesn’t support it, so it won’t be enabled :/

          • Lupe Fiasco

            Ah ok, that sucks Lol.

          • Pratik Holla

Not just a hardware issue, it just wont be enabled if its not a nexus device. I have a GS3 and its more than capable of taking HDR but i dont see the HDR option either.

Resorting to HDR camera + app right now which has more fine grain image tuining anyway.

          • Christian

The Nexus 4 is the only Nexus device that has hardware-level HDR support for Google’s HDR implementation. Even though your GS3 supports HDR, it doesn’t support Google’s HDR. Basically, the camera driver for a given device has to have a flag set or else HDR won’t show up in the stock Camera app. There are a few apps out there that have universal HDR support, and I think CM also has universal HDR support now.

          • Lupe Fiasco

Yeah, Cyanogenmod has HDR, but it performs horribly in my opinion. There are a lot better alternatives in the Play Store.

          • Lupe Fiasco

Yeah, Cyanogenmod has HDR, but it performs horribly in my opinion. There are a lot better alternatives in the Play Store.

        • http://flavors.me/nightmarejunior David Melendez

The stock camera app on the Razr HD has an option for HDR, but now it’s missing in this new camera app.

  • John

Not a big UI update from 4.2 camera. Lag on orientation change not fixed.

Hope Camera JB+ app updates soon to include this 4.3 UI and new live photo FX:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tOA6YOizWY

    • Jason

That lag has less to do with the camera and more to do with the priority that android gives the screen manager as I understand it.

      • John

Not sure. It seems that since Android 4.2 every phone rotation reloads the camera app. On Android 4.1 camera app this issue does not happen.
Also found a bug on panorama mode on my Nexus 4, the frame is flattened.

  • SlenderSniper

    What I keep getting.

    • evcon

I had to download on my computer then sideload onto the phone

      • SlenderSniper

        Don’t have a computer

        • chris420o

          dell.com

          • SlenderSniper

I know where to buy computers. If I had the money to get one, I would have gotten one and not replied to evcon’s reply.

    • Robert Macri

I would try downloading it again…. you may have a bad download.

      • SlenderSniper

        Tried at least 3 times

  • psuturtle

Anybody know if this app (or the 4.2 camera app for that matter) have a quick link to let you switch to the gallery directly from the camera app? Really annoying to take a picture and then have 10 taps to make to get to the gallery to attach the pic to an email.

    • Christian

Swipe from right to left across the camera – it’ll take you to the last picture you took. You can also keep swiping to go through all of the pictures, or pinch to zoom out on a picture to see a filmstrip view of all pictures. (P.S. It has been like this since 4.2)

      • psuturtle

thanks….I figured it had to be simple as it was always easy in ICS. I was looking for an icon :)

        • Christian

          Haha no problem! :)

  • evcon

For anyone asking, this installed on my HTC One alongside the Sense camera and gallery…it didn’t overwrite. This doesn’t bother me, it’s actually what I was hoping!

    • Chris Schmucker

Is there any difference in image quality between the two?

      • evcon

I just tested it and it doesn’t appear to be that much of a difference, though office fluorescent lights do weird things.

      • Pete Townill

I’m doing some comparisons now. Big difference in indoor and dim lighting, which the HTC One does much better…

    • jessem1323

Did you do anything special to get it to install along side rather than install on top of the Sense camera?

      • evcon

Nope, my guess is that if you don’t have stock Android it will just install alongside.

  • Roberto Catalani

Will this work with my Samsung S2 or I will brake something? hehe

    • Pete Townill

No reason it shouldn’t work, if you’re worried when installing it clear your defaults for installing APK and then use the Google Checker

      • Roberto Catalani

Thanks! already using it and I love it!!!! I love all Google stock apps, keep them comming please! hahaha

  • Paul Hansen

Won’t install on my GS4 running CM10.1 just a heads up.

    • Shack

You need to remove the old gallery apk from the /system/app folder. Should work after that.

      • Jeff C

Can someone confirm if this works. im too lazy to rely on a should, no offense.

        • D.J. Harbaugh

I ended up doing the same thing suggested in the wallpaper and boot animation article. Move the app manually to /system/app, change permissions to rw/r/r and reboot. Worked like a charm.

          • Jeff C

            Good looks

          • Matt Bell

Is your video quality poor as well?

          • D.J. Harbaugh

Yes, it’s absolute crap, and unacceptable. Stock app going back in. Glad you mentioned that, because I wouldn’t have noticed it until I went to take a vid and then been pissed!

          • Matt Bell

Hopefully this will be fixed if they release it on the play store!

          • Caldroid

I’m running AOKP Milestone 1 (4.2.2) and for some reason the camera freezes after taking 1 picture unless u hit the focus manually. I want to go back to the original camera but I have no idea how to do this. Can anybody help me please?

          • Khary Anderson

stock camera doesn’t play well with AOSP ROMs cameras since introduction of photosphere

      • Matt Bell

Can confirm this. It does work! Also, I’ve got a Verizon GS4 running CM10.1.

        • Matt Bell

On my first install, whenever I would take a picture with the front facing camera, green lines would show up all over my picture (very matrix-esque). All I did to fix that was uninstall the new apk and reinstall it. Works great now! *knocks on wood*

      • Paul Hansen

Yeah, there’s a flashable zip floating around too for those that are lazy. Was more just pointing out that the “click and install” method doesn’t work.

  • Pete Townill

EDIT: Link appears to be fine after a dangerous looking pop up.

I now have the stock camera and gallery apps on my HTC One, thanks!

  • http://www.hammertechnologies.net/ Chase Johnson

What are the differences (other than UI) than stock 4.2 camera? Are there new features or just a new look.

    • r0lct

just new menu layout, no additional features

      • Razormike

Actually the gallery seems to have a new edit feature, if you edit a photo and then swipe either horizontally or vertically you can see a preview of the original unedited photo to compare. Also there is the new timer feature.

  • Kiril Vatev

Is this an update to the stock camera app, or is it a separate app? As in, does it install over the stock camera, or alongside it?

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

It did install over the top of my Nexus 4 camera. So yeah, if you have a Nexus, this will replace it.

      • Kiril Vatev

Hmm… so we should be expecting this in the market soon?

        • WickedToby741

          That’s my take.

      • Jaxon Wright

which also means if you have CM10.1?

    • Ryan Powell

Confirmed on the Verizon GNex. Replaced the stock camera app with no issues.

  • Raj Bhatt

I wonder if my GNex can handle it. It’s been showing its age lately.

    • Ryan Powell

I’m with you. In the past two months my GNex has slowed down with every task. Now I’m just hoping a good Verizon phone option comes out by November.

      • Hothfox

Same. It’s still a good phone, but it’s a little bit slower and choppier than it used to be. I’m really crossing my fingers for the HTC One.

      • emrikol

I just got myself an S4 and put AOKP on it. It’s everything my Gnex used to be*. I am in love again!

        * After using the Gnex for so long, I really don’t like the hardware buttons, and miss the on screen menu. I can add it back, but then that’s just silly.

      • Adam Truelove

It’s because of 4.2.2′s memory management. Go back to 4.1.2 and it’ll be MUCH snappier.

        • duke69111

yea, my g nexus was a beast on bugless beast 4.1.2.

      • Erik Jensen

Use Forever Gone or LagFix to “repair” all Asus units., like Asus Transformer, Nexus7 …It will work better than new. Promise! Olso remember to disable Google Current (setting-apps) that make a lot of lag when it syncronise.

      • Ivon Liu

        Try XenonHD with Fancy Kernel.

    • Rocketjrb

I downloaded a cache cleaner and it did wonders. Run it every month or so and it should help.

      • KleenDroid

It will be even better if you go into recovery and clear cache and dalvik.

    • TSY87

right there with ya buddy! I’ve been prowling craigslist trying to scoop up an s4 for a good price to hold me over till the note 3 or HTC T6 comes out.

      • ion

        What’s good price to you?

    • Hothfox

It seems to be working well on mine. Took a second to launch the Gallery (it updates both the gallery and the camera, though I don’t see any changes in the gallery), but the camera works just fine.

      • Syntastic

I noticed a definite change in the gallery after this installed. Every time I would open my gallery before, it would show 4 different picasa folders (I’m assuming they’re the folders for G+) named profile photos, scrapbook photos and two completely empty folders. The gallery would hang on those four for a good 2 or 3 seconds before loading up the rest of the folders. After this camera update, the two empty folders are gone and the gallery opens up immediately with no lag. Huge improvement.

    • KleenDroid

Clear your cache and dalvik in recovery.

You will feel like you got a new phone.

      • kronos002

I take it you must be rooted for that to work?

        • MichaelFranz

Custom recovery yes, might be able to do it in stock recovery, but i am not sure. 90% of people with a GNEX have it unlocked with a custom recovery on it

          • Jeremy Martin

95% of all statistics are made up on the spot. :)

          • Ryan B

And 34% of those turn out to be true.

          • Willie D

80% of those statistics are believed 100% of the time

          • Alvin

87% of people around the world are believed these posts was meaningless

        • slider112

60% of the time, it works every time.

      • Raj Bhatt

I do this constantly. I’ve been doing this since the OG Droid so I know what I’m doing. It just seems like the device can’t handle normal tasks these days. Planned obsolescence maybe?

        • evcon

I remember hearing somewhere that the flash memory used in the GNex is low quality, thus it degrades. I don’t know how it all technically works but it sounded legit enough to me to commit to buying a One.

      • Blue Sun

Your phone will be… wait for it…

        Amazing!

    • Kyle Miller

Its more than two years old at this point. Time to move on. I have and it did hurt but I needed to. Most phones only last two to three years anyway as far as speed goes.

      • Raj Bhatt

It will be 2 years old on December 15th I believe. Still, I am just waiting until my contract end date to see if VZW has released anything decent. If not, I might give TMO a shot. I don’t want to, but VZW isn’t giving me much of a choice.

        • Robert Macri

Same here… hoping for a Note 3 or something good from Motorola before moving on. I’m stuck on Verizon because my wife has two years left on her line in the family plan (she just got the s4).

          • Raj Bhatt

My wife’s contract ends in October on our family plan and then we will be free to do what we want, but I am going to give VZW a chance until December or so. I am hoping that the newest Nexus will be released in November and that perhaps Verizon will get it.

          • Willie D

You dont HAVE to stay on the plan. If one of the family members leaves, or is the primary, the next line moves up to the primary. If there is only 1 line left on the family plan, that device/line gets the benefits of the family plan solo.

          • Robert Macri

Interesting, thank you for the information.

        • Dan Lowery

I’m thinking the exact same thing. The GNEX on Verizon has been such a mess… good thing we can root! Nexus 5 on TMobile might be my next move.

      • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Unfortunately most users who still have unlimited data don’t have $700 to blow on a phone!

          True that!

Silly. Yet they will pay $300 subsidized and think they got a good deal. Then they lose their unlimited that the sales girl says you dont need anyway… lol.

I never really used all that much data till I got my S4. If I didn’t have unlimited now I would be screwed.

come on people. .. why do you think they are going to tiers? Do you think they are being nice and wanting to save you money?

I paid full price for 2 S4′s and would do it a hundred times over.

sell your current phones and pay the difference, it wont be much.

I’m not even entertaining the idea of giving up unlimited on my line but the thing is it is very hard to justify going out and spending $700 for a phone when Verizon is running ads all day long on popular radio channels and TV about how you could get the same exact phone for only $99 or $199 on contract and who honestly cares about the contract? I like Verizon’s service and their customer care so I know that is who I would like to stick with for a few years to come so what’s the harm in signing a 2 year contract? I would sign one right this second if it included unlimited data because it would be a guarantee that they cannot alter or change that plan for at least 2 years!

Heck, I can’t even convince people to stop “buying” the free phones they offer you when it’s time to upgrade. I explain to them that they are all at least 6-12 months old and will be obsolete and entire year before they can get a new one but they can’t stomach the “insane” $99 or $199 to get a more recent model.
I’m just afraid that they will no longer honor the unlimited plan after I upgrade, meaning I would have spent the extra $500 for nothing.

Some people just don’t understand the fact that the phone they buy actually retails for almost $800 depending on the device! I was in Walmart the other day and looking at some stuff in the electronics department when some lady was checking out with a new iPhone (I don’t know which model exactly). The cashier said it would be $600 and I thought she was gonna pass out, then the person behind her commented about how she would never pay over $50 let alone $600 for any phone (she was checking out with some cheap pre-paid phone in her hand). People are gonna be in for a wake up call if carriers start following T-Mobile and go through with ditching contracts all together!

totally agree. I’ll sell my Gnex and get the next great phone whenever I want since I am not falling for the subsidized upgrade, lose your unlimited data ploy. Just stay on my plan and bring my own phone

Lagfix seems to help mine… although it may be a placebo.

I know what you mean. It seems to give an immediate speed increase which disappears after a reboot.

That’s how I felt. I bought a used one off of ebay and it was ok for a while but then really started to lag badly no matter what rom/kernel I was on and even if I had it OC’d to the max all the time.

So have you tried it? :)

    • Rabid Rotty

Works great chppy opening the first few times, but do a reboot after works just fine

GNex here too: I’ve just tested it (quickly), and I must say I don’t see that much difference with the previous version of the app. The menu design is a little different (it’s not on a full circle any more), they’ve added a new menu entry for the location option, and you can take a photo by pressing the volume button of your phone. That’s all I see for now… So unless I missed something, I don’t think it should make a big difference for your phone.

Anyway, it installs as an “update to a system app”, so I guess you can always uninstall the update and get the original version back if you need it.

(Hopefully they fixed some bugs with the photo sphere functionality, which tended to crash before the image was fully saved the last times I used it.)

I tried it on mine, but PhotoSphere crashes when it tries to save. All other features seem to work perfectly. My Gnex is running ShinyRom 4.2.2 btw.
