New DashClock Extension Shows Hangouts Info on Your Lock Screen

dashclock hangouts

A new DashClock extension was released this morning to allow Google Hangouts information to be displayed through the popular lock screen widget. The extension is about as simple as it gets in terms of info that it displays, but if you were looking to add Hangouts info to your ever-growing-list of DashClock add-ons, this is currently the way.

We should note that it does require root access, so this extension will not be for everyone. We’ll be adding this to our rolling DashClock extension list, which you should check out if you haven’t already. And don’t forget to join the DashClock beta program to keep up-to-date on the latest releases.

How to spot a crackflasher: When your Uptime since last reboot dialog is placed higher than unread messages 😀

  • Chris Hollenbeck

One of the best selling phones last year (40 million) and still isn’t supported. 🙁
    Galaxy 3

  • zzz525

What’s the extension for your last reboot time?

  • timrcm

Am I the only one who doesn’t care for DashClock? I want iOS-style lockscreens notifications, dangit. Having to expand it defeats the convenience of having it. I might as well just pull down my notification drawer.

    • zzz525

      Then get an i*hone

      • timrcm

Don’t get TOO jumpy or anything, I do realize what website I posted this on. I simply prefer the iOS lockscreen notifications for being able to see everything with a quick glance. That doesn’t make up for the 4819247 things I -don’t- like about iOS.

I know you shouldn’t “have to” get a ROM to make android perfect. That being said, I’m on a fairly old version of AOKP (though I bet it’s still in most recent versions), that has an option to auto-expand the lockscreen widget.

  • PyroHoltz

While I think this is cool, I want the ability to show Google Now Cards on the DashClock. I know I can just pull down the Notification Curtain to see select important cards but I think it’d be a nice addition.

  • fartbubbler

    I’m addicted to DashClock extensions

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Keep forgetting this GS4 has 4.2.2… needs me some DashClock

  • Clemens Schartmüller

AppLauncher for DashClock can also display notifications with the premium version!

    • John Burke

      As do:

      • Clemens Schartmüller

The only difference is that those apps mostly don’t need root access 😉

        • John Burke

Agreed, none of the ones I listed require root

  • Sqube

Yeah, gonna go ahead and not install this until someone explains why it needs root.

      Hangouts doesn’t provide an API

The author pointed out on the Store page that (due to the lack of accessible API) it literally is just reading the statuses right out of the Hangouts app itself. That kind of inter-app communication is probably the sort of thing that most applications aren’t allowed to have bc so many malware or keyloggers might use it

      • Sqube

Makes sense. But combine that with the news about the sweeping vulnerabilities that (IIRC) allow bad guys to take your app, insert malware into it and have it just sit comfortably on the store, I’m a little trigger-shy about things like that right now.

I know it’s probably vastly overblown, but it’s making me nervous. We’ll go ahead and not talk about any of the other apps on my phone that already have root. >.>

      • Royal2000H

IIRC, if it registers itself as an accessibility service (and you enable it in settings) it can read your notifications and put it in dashclock. Why not do that rather than go root?

  • sc0rch3d

awesome but no thanks. company policy locks down lockscreen functionality. 🙁

    • mechapathy

      You must work for Apple.

      • sc0rch3d

if i had an iphone, i wouldn’t be commenting here. if you had a brain, you would know that enterprise security reigns supreme over customization.

        • mechapathy

What are you, twelve? It was a joke. Calm down with your accusations.

          • sc0rch3d

gotta love people that back out of their jokes with a childish insult to follow. keep on trucking spongebob

          • mechapathy

I’m not backing out of anything. A joke isn’t an opinion, it’s an observation. It’s still funny to me, and I’m not apologizing. Backing out? Not so much. And saying something like “if you had a brain…” was childish.

Root access possibly to get around DashClock’s biggest flaw – each Extension that monitors Notifications requires its own Accessibility Settings?
    No thanks.
That’s what’s keeping me from using DashClock over WidgetLocker…that and limiting Extensions to 5 instances.

    • Clemens Schartmüller

However, this is surely NOT DashClock’s fault. It’s a given security restriction by the platform Android.

      • John Burke

        Not sure about that.
Why can’t DashClock have one Accessibility Settings the way Tasker does?

Anyhow, not going to argue, I simply don’t like how DashClock Extensions each require their own Accessibility Settings for Apps that monitor Notifications so I unfortunately can’t rely on DashClock for my Notifications. Simple as that.

  • Jaime Lefebvre

Why in the world does this ask for SuperUser permission? Uninstalled as fast as lightning.

  • Jeremy

Where do you get these wallpapers? Every post you put up you have a killer looking wallpaper.

  • mechapathy

    Uh. Root access? For…what?

  • SirSoloDolo

Seen the account balance and thought you were that broke

EDIT: I know it be stupid to have your bank account balance on your lockscreen xD

  • Hothfox

Disappointed that the icon is not the new Hangouts icon. For what it’s worth, Lightflow takes care of Hangouts in Dashclock pretty well, and uses the new Hangouts icon.
