HTC’s New Blinkfeed Ad Makes Me Want to Hide From My Friends

YouTube Preview Image

After HTC announced the new HTC One and its unique take on a home screen, also known as BlinkFeed, it’s safe to say that Android purists didn’t exactly warm up to the idea of having a non-removable panel of social and news feeds. But HTC was selling this to the average, everyday user, and rightfully so. To many, having a single home screen feed that can be filled up with your social networks, latest news from top sites, and calendar appointments, is incredibly convenient.

Unless it turns out to be anything like this new commercial that HTC released last night. In the spot, a girl is checking out her phone while riding on the subway. As she browses through BlinkFeed, her friends start appearing in the car along with her as if it’s some scene out of The Shining. There are sports broadcasters, football soccer players, and others all robotic-ly spouting out the word “like.” Shivers, down my spine. And that potato looks nothing like Elvis.

” To many, having a single home screen feed that can be filled up with your social networks, latest news from top sites, and calendar appointments, is incredibly convenient.” You can do that now on WP8 :)

  • C-Law

Why in the world would HTC film this in a dark subway with flickering lights? HORRIBLE IDEA! Do it outside in the sunlight and it would be so much better. As is, it’s gonna creep people out, just like this author

  • blakjakdavy

I’m gonna go against the grain of most comments here. I don’t think this was that bad. It communicates blink feed to Joe consumer, while actually putting the phone in a person’s hands. It answers the questions “what is it and why do I want it?” This is where past HTC ads failed. They didn’t explain why anyone would want the device, and their phones were rarely shown in human hands. Apple and Samsung have used this formula for a long time: show off a feature, and show a person connecting with the device. I’m glad to see HTC have cottoned on and I really hope the One succeeds. If a nexus version of the One were to happen with the same body but on screen buttons…SO MUCH WANT.

  • Mustang5Oh

I bet if it were Samsung’s commercial you would be bowing to it calling it fantastic!

  • TC Infantino

Oh God! They made it look a lot like Windows 8! Kill it with Fire! HTC, not the best move.

  • Alan Paone

That was really werid, and didn’t make me want Blinkfeed at all :/

  • FAL_Fan

That’s truly ONE of the dumbest things I have ever seen…

  • Jonathan Paul

That is awful i dont want any of that information, and the fact that it is a big feature of the phone, just completely turned me off, Sorry HTC, wont be getting that.

  • NexusMan

Don’t like the spot but I’m not British nor in the UK, so perhaps it plays differently over there.

  • LionStone

There ya go HTC, they don’t all have to be hits… now about 10 more commercials! :-)

  • http://profiles.google.com/zkolev Zack Kolev

My favorite content is on Google+. Is that on the BlinkFeed?

  • Mason Lammers

Hahaha, I don’t know why but this article made me laugh. Touche Droid-Life making my work day a little better!

  • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

This is the first time I’ve seen the BlinkFeed “scroll” animation. That alone would make me want to toss it at a wall.
Once again, implementation has killed an interesting concept.

Functionally, this is a ripoff of the Windows 8 People app, which does the same thing for Facebook + Twitter + LinkedIn.

One one……..PHAIL (Pretty Horrendous And It’s Losing)

  • Sue Laforte

Just crossed htc one off my upcoming buy list. Galaxy 4 moves to top of the list.

  • Josh

I swear, lately HTC has been like a train wreck in slow motion, it’s horrific but you can’t look away.

  • Chris King

I don’t know if I’d like it but who knows ever since I downloaded opera beta I find myself kinda addicted to their news feed

  • Jaron1226

    The F did I just watch? O_o

  • TSY87

my goodness that phone looks good.

  • ZeeX1

Even more stupid than the idiotic super bowl commercials! 2013 marketing is going down the drain for some reason!

  • wm snyder

If you google blinkfeed you will find many pple want this to be ported. i for one think it is good its like a ticker but with all the stuff i’m interested in, with instant access ,all in one place, so when i pick up my phone it is there and i don’t have to open up all my apps just to catch up and it is eye pleasing

    • Shane Redman

I probably wouldn’t mind it as a lock screen widget

      • wm snyder

        exactly that would be Kool!

  • http://www.facebook.com/steven.elliott.524596 Steven Elliott

You guys say it’s unique, but in my opinion it isn’t. It’s similar to Windows Phone Live Tiles.

  • Liderc

lol, nice headline just had to come here to say that.

  • Bionicman

the decision to make it permanent with stock sense launcher is very strange. hopefully they’ll include an option to disable it in the future. i shouldn’t have to install a launcher to disable something i dont like on the phone.

  • spickle

    ew that’s terrible.

  • Tirionfive

Why does every Android manufacturer (Short of Google) think that they have to have their logo on the front. It’s ugly and rather distracting. I have the Gnex and I love the fact that it has no branding on the frontside. It’ll be a sad day when I have to move away from this device. Apple and Google Nexus are the only ones that seem to get this concept. NO ONE WANTS TO SEE YOUR BORING LOGO 24/7 ON THEIR MAIN FACE!

    • Austin Warren

How else will people know what phone you have? It’s called advertisement.

      • Tirionfive

Works real well when the only person that can see your logo is the person holding it… At which point they already know.

      • wm snyder

I would rather tell them then having my face tattooed with their logo

      • C-Law

But he’s talking about the logo on the front! Most of the time, you only see the back of phones when they are being used or its sticking out of a pocket. You only see the front if you are basically right above it or touching it. You aren’t gonna get that close if you’re a stranger. Front advertising makes no sense to me

        • Austin Warren

When I cup my Note 2 the back is covered and only the front is visible.
Looks as if the HTC lights up so makes since to put it on front.

    • FAL_Fan

Dude really? It’s for all the people around you that are trying to look at your phone while you’re using it…screen creepers…

  • Sirx

“Today, HTC kicks off their special ‘!Red Rum’ marketing campaign to take on powerhouse Samsung.”

“This new ad campaign isn’t misguided or creepy at all!” -HTC Head of Marketing

  • Butters619

Did they want it to come off like a Horror movie?

    • Lactose_the_Intolerant

Yep, that’s why they added the creepy twins!

  • nightscout13

    Freak show

  • Justin Barrett

Notice the twins staring creepily? RedRum…..

  • http://twitter.com/silkyjay2007 John Cantrell

    no thank you

  • Stephen Partington

After using the Sense 5 port to the DNA, blink-feed isn’t that bad. It isn’t great, but it is not horrible. I think it hsould be a widget you can set up as an alternate screen you cna go to, this would siut me best.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dominick-White/642535026 Dominick White

How is sense 5 on the Dna?

      • JetBlue

        It’s a port.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dominick-White/642535026 Dominick White

i know taht, was mainly asking how is it working on the Dna, seeing if there were any slow downs or any other issues

    • JoshGroff

No, that would be too logical.

  • zepfloyd

and yet HTC wonders why its marketing isn’t resonating…hmm

    • Austin Warren

      Yeah, that was pretty horrible.

      • daqatafibuv

my neighbor’s sister makes $65/hour on the laptop. She has been without a job for five months but last month her income was $14848 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Go to this web site and read more-,- http://www.google.Giℊ60.ℂℴm

I really like HTC but HATE this Blinkfeed crap. It’s almost as in-your-face as Droid Life ads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • itznfb

Watch it with no sound. It’s pretty creepy.

  • Alchemy08

that potato looks like a turd.

  • http://www.shenye.co.uk Shen Ye

    That was a weird potato.

  • JetBlue

Can’t you remove Blink Feed with another launcher?

    • cortesjues

yeah you can, but most regular people don’t know that

      • JoshGroff

        Most regular people won’t care.

        • cortesjues

          Good point lol

        • http://twitter.com/Craigboy Craig Boyte

          Unless they don’t like it

          • JoshGroff

In which case they’ll get a different phone or ask someone they know how to change it, in which case the whole replacement launcher scenario would come into play.

  • http://twitter.com/JohnnyACE562 GRAND MASTER SEN$Ei {{-_-}}™

    Looks too much like Windows Phone. {{-_-}}

    • Thomas

      Hmmm…

    • http://twitter.com/fr8cture Eric

Looks nothing like windows phone….more like a mash up between flip board and google now inverted.

      • cortesjues

That’s exactly why i like it, i just wished that it was removable from stock launcher….

        • wm snyder

          port?

      • http://twitter.com/JohnnyACE562 GRAND MASTER SEN$Ei {{-_-}}™

        Well, I wouldn’t know because I don’t use Windows Phone. (Nor do I know anybody sane who does.) {{-_-}}

      • FAL_Fan

Well, conceptually it is the same.
