Google Now has a Built-in Pedometer – Tracks Miles Walked and Biked From Each Month

Last night, and possibly because the month of October came to a close, Google Now started showing a new card to a number of our readers. That new card is a pedometer that has been tracking their steps and miles biked over the last couple of months, behind the scenes. I say “behind the scenes” because this is a card that we have yet to see or hear about. In fact, I took a quick look through Google Now settings and could not find this feature mentioned.

Pretty cool though, right? As you can see in one of the screenshots, it actually compared September to October and split up the activities depending on activity type. There is a mention under the results that reads “Based on your device’s location which is periodically sent to Google.” A Learn more link sits below it, but doesn’t provide any useful info.

Has your Google Now pedometer card showed up? Feel free to post ‘em in the comments.

Cheers Zeas, NCSUgolfer01, cory, Stephen, Dale, Jose, Grady, Matthew, and Brian!

How do you turn this card on? I updated my google search and see more card options but not the pedometer card?

Last night I noticed another card I haven’t seen before. Is the shipment tracking card something other people have seen?

I had an outstanding Amazon order shipped by UPS and based on my gmail, google now seems to have created a card I can tap which brings me to the UPS tracking page.

mine showed up said I had traveled 4 miles though I have certainly walked more then that…now the card is gone

  • senvooo

Now that looks like its gonna be really cool. WOw.

You could have seen the card in the movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXtudZl5mzM&feature=youtu.be&hd=1 at about 15 seconds :-)

When I opened Goggle Now this morning I saw the pedometer card. I had walked 41 miles in October. It’s not correct for October, I usually average 60 miles walking in a month I will see what number it gives for November.

I think this is a pretty cool feature. I bike a lot and it tracks it for me.

  • ddevito

I got a card saying I walked (which I did) and cycled (which I didn’t)

  • http://twitter.com/Charlie23 Charlie C

I’m seeing the new card as well. Pretty cool, but I don’t believe the data.

  • Artune

I run 3 miles every other day and in October I ran over 25 miles tracked by Nike plus running app and google now said I ran 21 miles so that’s close enough. I think you guys need to have your GPS on to be properly tracked, not just location services. I only had my GPS on when I used the Nike plus running.

  • samagon

I didn’t get any card showing how much I walked, does that mean I didn’t?

  • https://plus.google.com/117125023630262605212 Kelly

Yup, it said I walked 2 miles in october, though a lot of the time I don’t have it on me while walking within the office etc, so I may have to start carrying it around to see if it reflects the changes

  • pholocity

i do like how it anticipates your drive time to get to a meeting that’s not in your office. It’ll tell me you should start driving for your 11AM meeting when it’s 10AM because of traffic; and it shows me the traffic and the best route. NUTS

  • http://www.theandroidsite.com benmarvin

Most of my walking is done to and from my car, so I guess that’s why the card hasn’t shown up yet.

  • panicswhenubered

lol It says I walked 1 mile in September, and 0 miles in October. wth?

Edit: I bike 40+ miles a week, and run at least 10 miles a week, and got no idea how much I walk, but it’s not 0 miles!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Frows Robert Ranney

mine showed a whopping 0 miles

  • jcorf

Yep, saw it this morning when I woke up.

  • duke69111

I did not get the walking card, but I got a new “Photo Spot Nearby” card.

    • michael arazan

just got it earlier this week, google now is trying to figure out where i work, it’s kind of intrusive, especially for workers of the government

      • mbaldwin85

        THIS
I’m sure that the Marine Corps doesn’t need/want Google mapping out everything while I’m on base. Then again, you should see what kind of things people put on foursquare

  • hldc1

29 miles walked in October, which I believe. 3 miles biked in October? Hard to believe, since I don’t even own a bike and haven’t ridden a bike since I was in middle school.

    Still a cool feature though.

  • bobbymay1

I walked 49 miles in October, probably due to the fact that I live on one of the biggest colleges in the country.

    • Jim McClain

      GO BUCKS

  • Brian Saunders

Apparently I walked two miles more in October than I did in September. I was momentarily freaked out when that card popped up, but it was quickly followed with a “Holy s#*t that’s awesome”.

  • Christopher Reeks

Mine showed up this morning and I had 13 miles for September and 9 miles for October!!! Not bad.

  • literocola

Mine said that I walked 12 miles in October, which I’m sure is a gross over estimate. This will be really cool if they can figure out a way to make it more accurate, but until then it is kind of a waste of space.

  • carluverdrm2004

I biked 2 miles in September? False, I haven’t been on a bike in years? :X

  • Kizipotamus

I opened Google Now this morning to find this. It’s pretty awesome!

  • Greg

I had this card show up this morning, walked 42 miles in October, up 22 miles from September.

  • Matthew Morrison

    houston rockets yessir!!!

Since updating, its now showing photo spots and places to check in, but no pedometer. I always have location and GPS on and I walk about 5 miles a night with my Endomodo app.

  • Brian

    About location history card

The Location History card appears once a month. It provides a very rough approximation of how far you’ve walked, cycled, or driven during that month compared to the previous one. These estimates are based on occasional samples of the accelerometer in your [phone/tablet], which are then compared to typical movements involved in walking, cycling, or driving.

This information isn’t available unless you’ve turned on location reporting and history for at least one of your Android devices. If you’ve turned on location and history reporting on more than one device.

What is the card called? I don’t see pedometer anywhere and have updated everything and always run my gps.

  • http://twitter.com/hexagram86 David

    Skynet!

  • drathos

I saw this this morning, but it wasn’t accurate for me. It said I’d walked 5 miles in the month of October (2 less than the previous month), but I guarantee that I walked at least 5 times that amount.

  • poeddroiduser

4 miles of biking even though I haven’t ridden a bike in years due to bad hip!

  • http://twitter.com/anjiecai anjiecai

Freaked me out when I took turned on my phone this morning

  • roberthenderson

No, but I would love that information

  • steven sullivan

    Just noticed it this morning.

  • s2k_848

Mine popped up this morning and said I walked 23 miles for the month October, it should be no less then 70 miles just during the work week, since I walk every for at least 3 miles during lunch.

  • akazerotime

I have a card that just says “Location history – Based on your device’s location which is periodically sent to Google” but no pedometer yet.

  • Rodolfo

Apparently I walked about 21 miles (??? seriously doubt it. I ride my car to the corner bakery) and biked 4 (haven’t touched a bike)

  • Bob A. Booey

If you also have google finance you will get Stock updates as well!

    • https://plus.google.com/117125023630262605212 Kelly

      noticed that as well!

  • Daniel Maginnis

We will see how accurate it is. I regularly take my nexus to school with me riding my bike. Its 3 miles each way. The card showed I only rode 10 miles.

  • LeDerp

I gots it. I need to walk more!
Although i dont wear my phone at the gym but i like the general idea.

  • Devilsephiroth

And I thought a pedometer was for tracking nearby pedophiles.

  • gadgetryan

Was your GPS on? My card didnt show up

  • onDroid

I saw some new cards this morning too. It is now showing stock stats for the stocks that I own and also is suggesting a forbes article of a review of a game that I recently searched. I do not have the pedometer though. Any way to make that show up?

  • http://www.facebook.com/yufull Yu Full Chong

Mine showed up and I walked 52 miles in October! Pretty proud of myself.

  • connor

I walked 8 miles in October ..it’s probably because I took a trip to Europe and walked everywhere!! http://imgur.com/oMdYV

  • PetiePal

Pretty awesome I saw this this morning for the first time.

  • Mike Hawk

Anybody else think of pedo – meter? Like short for pedophile? No… just me? Fine then.. *crawls vack in hole*

    • Kevin

You’ve ogled 10 underage girls this month. Pedometer score: 4/10.
