HTC’s Verizon Bound 1080p Phone Rumored to Have Quad-core Snapdragon S4, 1.5GB RAM, and 480ppi Display

The HTC “dlx” or better known to most as the upcoming 1080p 5″ device, may sport a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, a non-removable battery, and a pixel density of 480ppi, according to HTCSource. This rumor also suggests that the phone may end up being DROID-branded on Verizon, since the source of this information claims that the phone has a “red techno” background and the now-famous “DROID” notification sound. The phone we have seen in pictures (above) is also said to be the device we have all been waiting for.

There is a chance that we  could see this phone next week at HTC’s NYC event.

Does this sound like your dream device?

  • droidbeat

This is the one I’m waiting for. HTC will vault back into the most desirable smartphone slot with this. I just hope it has Jelly Bean, since most of us may not live long enough to see VZW update it.

  • Bionic

This is the ONLY HTC phone that has EVER impressed me. That being said I want to know whatever size battery is in this thing. It would take a hell of a device to sway me away from Motorola.

  • AhsanS

    Sticking with the RAZR HD.

  • Hatyrei

Holy Cow…. :),. I hope they released it soon…I’m kinda tempted of buying iPhone 5 cuz my friends are doing it so :P,. lol ,. Also the red accents remends me of Verizon’s Motorola Q :)

  • AnGeLFaCe777

I hope HTC put big battery in this device. It has great specs.

  • heat361

Hope they have an unlocked version

  • cruzfl0w

Great specs, but how will the battery hold up. HTC is known for great build quality, but have always lacked in the battery department. What good are all the specs in the world of your phone dies in two hours. If it tones down sense and has a great battery life I will sell my GS3 for this beast.

  • SKAVENG3R

I want my onscreen buttons. Why? They are changeable you can add one take one away change the color. It gives you options and that why I like ANDROID.

  • Chris

I say you guys try not to get too excited over this. I have a feeling it won’t be exactly like this, and I don’t want people disappointed.

I’m super excited to see how it actually turns out though!

  • Diablo81588

I can’t help but think 480 PPI is beyond excessive for the viewing distance of smartphones. Why not go with 720p? I’d findi it hard to believe you could tell the difference between the two. You would save battery life, and have a blazing fast UI. Seems like every time these manufacturers bump up the speed, they add more higher res content to slow it back down.

    • a.youth.in.Asia

Some people thought that 326ppi was too much for the iPhone… This is the Super Retina HD + …it blows the iPhone away !

      • Jackson

Super Retina Amoled HD + extra display

  • UrDoGG

Make the screen 4.5″, remove the hardware buttons, don’t market it as a “droid” device, and put stock JB on it. Then we can start talking dream devices.
Seriously though, 480ppi? Thats pretty awesome.

    • droidbeat

      1080P and 480 ppi makes it a 4.6 inch screen, assuming it’s a 16:9 ratio as usual.

      • UrDoGG

        werd.

    • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Whats wrong with Droid branding? Most devices only have the Droid logo in the boot screen and extra ringtones and notifications so why would that be a deciding factor?

  • http://www.matthewdlyons.com/ matthewdlyons

    Interest piqued.

Wow! This bitch is baaaaad! This is the year of choice! iPhone 5, Note 2, HTC Baller Shite, Lumia 920, Razr Maxx HD and yes yes yes the Nexi to boot!

        You mean English please.

  • http://twitter.com/NolanAntonucci Nolan Antonucci

    1080p (1920 x 1080) over 5″ is actually 440 ppi (ppi calculator: http://members.ping.de/~sven/dpi.html).

Even if it’s 1920 x 1200 (like the Transformer Infinity and the new 8.9″ Kindle Fire) over 5″, which I hope it is, it’s ‘just’ 453 ppi.

These resolutions are still remarkable, but we might be approaching the overkill level as our eyes are now limiting the amount of detail able to be viewed.

    • a.youth.in.Asia

But watching porn on this phone will be AMAZING!

  • George264

16GB seems a bit too little. And I’m sure I’ll never use 2GB of RAM, but I want that extra RAM. It could actually make Sense smooth :D

  • Mustang5Oh

If these specs are true then HTC will be back in the game!!

    • dangolds

I’m not so sure about that. First off, specs alone don’t sell. If this is really a droid-labeled device, its marketing will be limited to whatever Verizon does with it, and this will be happening at the same time that Verizon will be trying to push the Razr HD and Razr Maxx HD models. Samsung and Apple, by contrast, do most of their own marketing and will be able to better differentiate the GS3, Note 2 and iPhone 5 in the minds of the general public. Second, while a number of folks on here might like a 5-5.5 inch device, that’s not a size that uniformly appeals to the masses. It’s a relatively niche market that exists because of the Note. With the Note 2 coming out and likely receiving heavier marketing, this could really limit HTC’s traction here. I think HTC would be better served refining the One series and getting it uniformly branded across all the major US carriers, similar to what Samsung was able to do with the Galaxy S line. HTC needs that kind of recognition to get customers thinking about their devices as often as they think about the Galaxy and iPhone lines. Only then will HTC be really back in the game.

      • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Who says it has to be a 5.5 inch device? The SGS 3 has a 4.8 inch display and if it was an edge to edge display it could be over 5 inches. I expect it to be around the size of the SGS3. As far as advertising it will come down to if Verizon decides to push this device or the Razr HD.

  • http://twitter.com/Dadzillasaurus Robert he

Battery life and weight were the only things I hated about my rezound (and of course the locked boatloader). So happy to see soft buttons instead on on screen. I absolutely hate the extra button pushes to bring up something that should already be there (along with that oh so irritating re-rendering of the screen). The phones are going to have “chins” so you might as well put something useful there.

  • serrastone

That amount of ram is a joke. Shouldn’t phones be getting more ram, especially when they have a processor like that? My S III even has 2gb of ram!

  • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I am drooling over this phone!!!! This will definitely be going on my Christmas list! lol

    • dangolds

Not me – 1080p is cool but the phone is too big for my taste. I have a GS3 and even that’s bigger than I’d ideally like. Throw in the droid branded nonsense and the risks to battery life others have pointed out with a phone of this size and pixelation, and I don’t have a strong desire for this at all. But hey, different strokes for different folks I suppose.

      • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Size of the screen doesn’t necessarily always correlate to a bigger device, the Droid Razr had a 4.3 inch display but yet the new Razr HD has a 4.7 inch display and yet the device is the same exact size. If the SGS3 had an edge to edge display it would be over 5 inches so I would expect this device to be only a smidge bigger than the SGS3. I currently have the Razr and the only really Droid branded stuff on the device is the boot screen and a few extra notification sounds and ringtones. Plus since I have the Razr now my idea of battery life is about 12 hours and since this device isn’t made to be the thinnest on the market, its just there to have a great screen and performance I don’t see a reason why it couldn’t easily get 12 hours.

Even if it isn’t your taste maybe it will one day evolve to where 1080p can be done in a screen size of 4.3 inches.

Gnote 2 is still my dream device !!

I think this may be enough to keep me on VZW, if not I want to see the Global version of this device. 1080P, Stellar camera…. looks like it should be pretty great

  • 216monster

If its Droid branded I will buy it the day of release! (sorry moto)

  • violator702

They could’ve at least given it 32gb of internal storage if it’s not going to have an SD card slot.

    • Justin

I agree, especially if it’s 1080p – those full HD videos take up a LOT of storage space.

      • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

and data plans aren’t getting ANY cheaper on Verizon!

        Unlimited Data FTW!

        • El_Big_CHRIS

FTW indeed! I’m keeping that ish until I die, Verizon ends it, or Jesus comes!

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Exactly, Verizon will have to pry it from my cold, dead hands!
On another note, in rebellion for Verizon doing away with Unlimited, anyone who has unlimited left should stream hours of netflix, pandora and iHeartRadio for the rest of the month!

          • LionStone

Haha, I do that ‘every’ month! :-)

          • El_Big_CHRIS

lol I’ve been doing ever since they ended it. My avg has been 30-40 gigs per month. I got my mom an iPhone and I turn off wifi so she streams via network too. Gotta milk that cow like they do data.

          • http://www.facebook.com/tony.dunn.75 Tony Dunn

My last billing statement I used 142 gigs of data. I’m currently at 54 right now with a week left on my statement.

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I’m currently at 20gigs but its been a slow month due to me having to send back FOUR different HTC devices for data issues! Lets just say I don’t have an HTC anymore! I may have given up the HD screen and Beats on the Rezound but I would rather have a device that actually works. I’m now loving the signal on my Razr!

          • Evan Knofsky

What do you do to use so much data? I would love to help :P

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I use most of mine through the Motorola Webdock and Motocast. But those are both motorola only things but before I had the Razr I would always watch YouTube on full 720p hd and I used to love to leave my Rezound streaming iHeartRadio or Pandora all night because it put me to sleep and if I woke up during the night it helped me go back to sleep. Streaming 8-12 hours of music every day adds up fast! Then there was netflix and I used to be addicted to Words with friends! lol

    • rodney11ride

I would bet its a nexus due to the non SD card slot. And I would also bet there is a 32gb version

      • violator702

I believe all the phones in HTCs One series didn’t have SD card slots either.

        • trob6969

Yeah, but according to the DLX code number its probably the rezound 2 and IF so it should have a removable battery AND SD slot…if so, I would buy this phone and probably keep it for a long time because I can’t see specs getting better than what it has for a long time.

          • violator702

The source did say otherwise on both accounts. Hopefully, we’ll find out soon enough.

          • trob6969

We’ll probably find out this wednesday when HTC holds its ‘unveiling’ press conference.

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

So its technically the Thunderbolt 3? There was the Thunderbolt then the Rezound was its successor and now this!
I agree, if it is truly quad core and 1080p it will beat any phone for a long time and particularly the iPhone, this makes the iPhone look like last decade crap!

  • http://thebeeobee.com/ thebeeobee

Seems like another typical terrible HTC phone idea. The droid branding is the only thing it has going for it, as verizon will probably push it pretty hard in promotions.

  • Philip Pongvarin

needs to have removable battery… i use my phone a lot and always carry an extra bettery

  • TheFirstUniverseKing

If there’s no SD card slot then this phone is a no-go. No matter how good the specs are, any future smartphones I purchase HAVE to have a slot. I have a 64GB card that I’m not planning on giving up anytime soon.

    • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Especially on a 1080p phone, a single movie is what? around 4 gigs or so depending on the level of compression? Plus since Verizon has officially done away with Unlimited data plans I see this as a way for Verizon to get users to use more data which in tern equals more money for them!

    • trob6969

Yep, no SD equals no sell to me. However, if this phone were to have expandable memory AND removable battery it would render every other phone on the market to mediocre status.

  • Alvin

Phone like this should of had 32GB memory but I ain’t being picky. Out of all the devices this is my next phone as long as the battery has a good size. Overall I’m liking what VZW has to offer for the Holiday season. Some really great choices.

    • Justin

I agree, VZW is definitely working on some amazing phones. If only I didn’t have to pay full price to keep my unlimited data :(

  • James_C_L

You lost me at “non removable battery” then I was really out when it might be “Droid branded”

  • Kerry Davies

Its really a joke for phones with this much power to have less than 2gb of RAM, and Im not a huge fan of 5in screens. 4.3 to 4.7 is really as big as i want to go, unless they can remove all the casing to make it thinner. Come on HTC no on screen keys! Along with all this power they really need to figure out with MOTO did and create better battery life. If all this goes into a phone ill be ready to pay full retail, but intill then im sticking with my nexus.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10215724 Raj Bhatt

I’ll be all over this if it is running vanilla Android.

EDIT: hmm, not a fan of hardware buttons though…

    • 2001400ex

Why? Hardware buttons rock. Why use screen space for the menu when you don’t have to?

      • Diablo81588

It potentially makes the phone physically bigger. Although I’m still not a big fan of the ICS+ menu button.

        • 2001400ex

But look at the picture, the bezel looks the same size-ish as the Note 2. I agree if the phone is bigger as a result, but if the bezel is there anyways…

          • Diablo81588

The Note 2 doesn’t have on screen buttons.

  • http://www.kovdev.com/ koveleski

If this is what they reveal at their NYC event, I’ll be angry that I’m not there to see it firsthand.

  • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh Tripathy

Holy mother.. Bite me! There has to be an international version with the same specs that’s not branded by some hideous carrier and with an unlocked bootloader.. I’d pay big money for this!! My One X suddenly looks mid-range! 480 ppi and that S4 Pro is like a fantasy come true..

    • a.youth.in.Asia

      The One X isn’t mid-range???

Why the hell does this thing have soft button instead of on screen?

    • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Soft buttons in my opinion are better than on screen. I like being able to always know where they are going to be there and in the same exact place.

      • http://twitter.com/JCBunch88 Jonathan Bunch

Yes but I like to move mine around or add new ones :)

      • MKader17

Have you used a device with on screen keys and had problems with the statement you made?

        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I just don’t like the fact that if the screen locks up or freezes you can’t do anything. I can’t count how many times I have been doing one too many things on my Razr and the screen freezes / locks up and hitting the home button or the back button is the only way out without hard resetting.

          • MKader17

I would just get rid of the razr never had any problem with that on my Nexus. I’ve been to the point that it took a bit to recognize the touch, but the same thing happened on my OG Droid.

      • nightscout13

You should *facepalm* after you re-think that one.

        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

We are all entitled to our opinions and just because I like them doesn’t mean you have to!

          • macewank

i think his point was that the on screen buttons don’t ever move.. and don’t really ever disappear either. unless you’re playing a video in landscape mode. which gives you more screen real-estate.. which is good.

i can’t think of a single benefit to soft buttons like this.

          • Captain_Doug

It’s funny when people don’t understand that it gives you more screen instead of less.

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I realize it gives more screen real-estate but I’m just thinking of all the times my phone has frozen while trying to play a performance intensive app and the screen locks up, what then? On my Razr the buttons keep working even if the screen is locked up and frozen.

          • Captain_Doug

power button? that usually helps me.

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

On the Razr that just makes it worse, especially because I use Face Unlock so trying to lock it and then unlock it is pain when its deciding to be slow and freeze. Whats best is when I hit the home button and I have a widget on the homescreen from SystemPanel that terminates all running apps. Once it terminates its a speed demon but theres a few rogue apps that can cause this thing to come to a stand still.

          • Captain_Doug

sounds like you have some out of control apps. The RAZR should be able to handle it. Do you have it underclocked? I guess that’s besides the point…

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

i honestly think its something to do with the OS on my device or some Motorola crap that came reinstalled because everyday I have to restart this phone at least once or twice because of either performance issues or signal issues. When it starts getting lagy I will open System Panel and I found Lookout to be a major cause of high CPU usage so I disabled that and it helped a little but nothing major. I can kill all the apps and yet it will still keep laging until I restart. Then theres signal issues, for some reason it likes to be very picky about when it wants to get data and what type to get. It will be working fine and then all of a sudden in a spot where I have had service before it shows no bars and no data in the notification bar but yet if I go into settings<more<Mobile Networks<Network Type and Strength it will show that its got 4G at around 96db. However if I goto the browser it says cannot connect.

Also, I'm stock and not rooted, but if Motorola doens't hurry up and get the Jelly Bean update I might just consider it. It also seems nice because I could overclock my phone to get a little bit more performance out of it.

On a side note, Moto’s on screen keys stay on the bottom (or the side, if it’s in landscape). You can see that in one of the vids they had up at the press release. Also, how would you not learn where they were after a short period of time. I already know with my Nexus 7 that when I switch to landscape, they will be on the bottom, or in portrait, again, at the bottom…

          • nightscout13

I absolutely understand and respect your right to an opinion. I get into that can of worms with many people. I’m totally fine with disagreement.

Because HTC thinks they know better than everyone else.

    • aQuickBit

I think the best soft button was the little magnifying glass. I use the sh*t out of that button. I have no idea if you can have that as an on screen or not but I loved being able to search for anything instantly.

  • Trevor

This phone sounds spectacular as long as the battery is up to par. I’m just not a fan of HTC’s skin. Hopefully they manage to keep the phone’s footprint to a minimum despite the 5″ screen, too.

Please HTC put a large battery in it.

This is by far the best specd phablet out there. But personally, j think the Galaxy Note II will end up beating it in the experience department. All this might end up being is an overpowered and oversized phone.

I doubt it. The Exynos is nowhere near as efficient as the S4 Pro. Integrated LTE and 28nm A15 is unmatched at the moment.

They just tend to use smaller batteries than other manufacturers. Its not really that their devices are less efficient.

          • Butters619

          • brandnew234

That’s what I’ve read from some user’s, I have no personal experience with the HTC One X.

          • Butters619

I can get 2 days if I am on wifi and it sits on my table. You get about 3 hours of on screen time. Subtract from that if you are doing anything over LTE.

          • nightscout13

2 days? most users? give me some of those mushrooms….I want to hallucinate too

Not enough or an HTC device

  • Mannequins

If this has an unlocked bootloader and gets cm10 quickly and easily this might be the device I use my upgrade on. Right now i’m rockin’ the s3 with cm10

    • thedonxr

Are you using the M1 that came out? Is it stable enough to be a daily driver?

      • Mannequins

I’m using the latest nightly. It’s very stable and everything is butter quick. would The M1 be better than the latest nightly?

  • nevildev

Definitely IF it has a battery that can handle that insane screen…otherwise pass for Droid Razr HD Maxx.

I sure hope unicorns pop out of it with those specs!

    • WAldenIV

This. Those specs are too good to be true.

If unlock able and they remove the s-on and off Crap.

    • KleenDroid

If we can unlock this phone it could be a hit.

    • Jigga_Z

HTC phones are relatively easy to get S-Off on (I mean real S-Off, not the HTCDev website). I can’t imagine someone won’t figure it out.

      • SteveG12543

The Rezound took forever to get S-OFF and I’m pretty sure the Inc 4G still doesn’t have it.

        • romma

Now that they have the new Dev-Unlock program, they have taken a page out of Moto’s book with bootloaders. No one has cracked the Inc 4G yet. Once I get rid of my Inc 2, I fear I am going to miss the good ole days of s-off.

          • Captain_Doug

agreed. I don’t think I’ll jump on another phone unless I know it’s already been cracked.

  • thedonxr

Depends if the dev community is on board…

    I…..have…no…..words.

Edit: Why not go for 2GB of ram?

    • Captain_Doug

yeah. I was thinking about that. Usually ram is dual channel so what is that? 768mb X2? Weird.

      • Diablo81588

Could be a cost saving measure. A display with this kind of PPI is bound to be expensive.

      • 4n1m4L

Tbolt had 768. Almost make sense for a Tbolt 2 to have twice that

    • michael arazan

More ram is better especially for video rendering which leads to smooth video playback and no buffering,

  • http://twitter.com/cheese cheese

    480 ppi omg

    • Trevor

Seems like overkill to me. Does higher ppi affect battery life? I’m fine with the 326ppi or whatever it is for the GNex, personally.

      • Justin

Higher ppi (480ppi vs 326ppi) will affect battery life because there are more pixels for the GPU to render… Then again, from what I’ve read on the S4 Pro, it’s extremely efficient, so it may not even be a noticeable difference compared to a 720p phone.

        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

It also comes down to how efficient the backlighting of the display is. Since its going to be a massive 5 inch plus display it will use more battery simply because it will require more backlighting than a 4.3 inch display.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Gulyas/709632554 Daniel Gulyas

Since it is bigger, they may be able to cram a bigger battery in there too though… It goes both ways.

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Hopefully they do! I had the Thunderbolt the day it was released and that was bad! Then I got the Rezound it was better, now I’ve got the Razr, if Motorola could make the Razr last as long as the Rezound and its a third of the size I would like to see what they could do in this! But they are gonna have to try and make this device thin to make it pocket friendly, if this is as thick as my old Rezound people will complain but if its thin and light it will be perfect.
