Rumor: Samsung Galaxy SIII Will Have 4.8-Inch Full HD Display, Quad-core Exynos Processor, and Simultaneous Global Launch

With all of the big MWC announcements now out of the way (none of which are headed to Verizon), it’s time to put our focus back on Samsung’s yet-to-be-announced Galaxy SIII. A couple of rumors surfaced over the last few days from the folks at BGR and may shed some light on what we can expect to see in the next few months (assuming these are accurate).

How does a 4.8″ Full HD display sound (potentially a HD Super AMOLED Plus)? When we hear “full HD” we immediately think 1080p display. Does anyone actually want a 1080p smartphone? Eh, that’s a good question that I’m not sure any of us have an answer to. We are just now settling into 720p displays, but hey, we’re willing to give 1080p a shot even if we can’t read any of the text or make out any of the icons without zooming in.

The phone will also reportedly rock a 1.5GHz Samsung Exynos quad-core processor (potentially the 4412 that was demoed last week), 2MP front camera, 8MP rear camera, Android 4.0+, LTE, and a ceramic casing. The ceramic casing is an interesting idea, and is one that we saw from HTC yesterday with the One S. This new ceramic material that is being used on smartphones is said to be 4 times harder than anodized aluminum and should hold up a lot longer over time. Sammie moving away from plastics? That would be a welcomed change.

The other and most importnat piece to this rumor has to do with release. Samsung will try and launch the phone simultaneously in over 50 markets. You may remember last year’s Galaxy SII launch debacle that forced U.S. owners to wait until the fall before being able to purchase it. Most of the rest of the world had the device for months before we touched it, but things may be different in 2012.

Feeling these specs? Too big? Too awesome? Can’t wait?

4.8″ screen with 1080p resolution? Good luck getting from the front door to your car without having to charge it already :P

  • Daniel Suraci

Have to say I was going to upgrade to a Galaxy Nexus next week, but with the update that just got pushed out to Droid X’s making my phone functional again, I think I’ll wait for this glorious beast.

  • jdrch

Given that it’s shipping with LTE, I don’t see why it wouldn’t come to Verizon.

  • jdrch

Does anyone actually want a 1080p smartphone? YES. I have 20/10 vision and work quite well with the Tiny text settings on my 720p #GalaxyNexus. I also prefer browsing desktop versions of sites instead of crappy mobile versions. Therefore, the more a phone can clearly display onscreen, the better for me. I really appreciate how Samsung is really pushing the specs envelope here.

  • RationalDemocrat

if this comes to verizon, I’m gonna samsung in my pants

  • Liderc

That looks good minus the Samsung logo, but somehow I doubt this is real.

  • Dshudson

I will get rid of this stupid GNex so fast I wont remember i had it at all.

  • manny108

I just hope this phone comes to Verizon…

  • bogy25

Where ever the phone shown above is going I WILL CHANGE TO THAT CARRIER!  Please be real please be real!

  • Jdstell
  • cooksta32676

Is a 1080 screen going to end up eating more data if you are on tiered data?

  • Androider4Life

Beautiful….I would like to see it on VZW, but I just got the GNEX and wont have an upgrade.

    • PC_Tool

This is why I love the family plans.  I have 4 lines on mine and should have 2 upgrade slots open by the time this hits VZW ….if it ever does.

Rumor, thats a weird way to spell dream

  • http://youtu.be/GvPlAyTG4ik?hd=1 Hitler vows to destroy Android

This is a half inch smaller than the note, effectively taking away that 1280x’800′ res… the 16×9 ratio will fit more hands than the notes 16×10 ratio.. this may be the perfect size large display that fits most hands, based on my medium hands and the one handed Nexus and the two handed Note.. Smaller than the Nexus but a bigger screen, win,win imo

    • cooksta32676

If you measure an Evo or Razr, large phones, a 4.8 could fit in the same footprint with a reasonably small bezel.

  • tmax

Are any of these new phones coming to verizon??

  • James_C_L

even if they do, im sure it wont be the exynos chip

  • EdCenter

geez, how long before people start making jokes about how the size of one’s android phone is the user compensating for their lack of, ahem, size?

    – Incredible 2 user, ex Droid X

    • PC_Tool

      Apparently, you just did.

      Congratulations.

    • CORYK333

And on that note…..let the jokes begin

  • http://twitter.com/bobboman_2000 Thomas Koeppel

way too fricken big, if i want a 4.8″ screen i’ll just go grab a samsung note…3.7″ is best 4″ is ok, 4.3″ is pushing it but 4.8″ hex no

    • kretz7

I rarely criticize people, but that just makes no sense…at all.

    • cooksta32676

It could still fit on a phone like the Razr or Evo with a very slim bezel. The phone doesn’t have to be massive…

    • Bionic

      your nuts.  3.7 sucks

  • rcpa

I absolutely want a 1080p smartphone.  Not for when I look at the screen, but for when I connect it to my monitor and use the Ubuntu for Android desktop.

  • cooksta32676

Who wants to get in line by the store and camp out with me, while we make fun of iFans?

  • Splice78

LTE? If so yummy if not its a step backwards

  • Fdrnyc

How about BATTERY????? If it doesnt have a battery like the Motorola RAZR MAXX, it’s a fail!

    • Captain_Doug

I’d be happy with anything over 2000mah. 2500mah would be ideal.

  • eddie

This better come on verizon since none of tht phones from mwc is headed to verizon

  • http://twitter.com/Fysi Richard Ashton

It’s from BGR. That instantly makes it not going to happen.

    • JCDerulo

Didn’t they have the first pictures and specs of the GNex?

      • r0lct

        Every dog has his day.

  • http://www.facebook.com/japultra Jason Nguyen

    FULL AWESOMENESS!!!

  • trumpet444

Cant be too big. Make it 5.8″, I dont care.

  • Tom Luley

Good God I hope they fix the radio…

    • AE35

Yes. It seems to be the biggest flaw of Samsung phones starting with the Fascinate. I won’t touch one until I know the radios and GPS work properly.

      • AlexKCMO

That’s interesting you say that.  I live in a black hole of cell phone reception and had to buy an extender (the kind that doesn’t do data).  My wife’s Fascinate owns my Droid X to hell.  I get 0 data in the apartment, she gets it in most places.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mtate0408 Michael Tate

it’s got to have a long lasting battery like the Maxx … if not … it’s a fail.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

I dunno. Samsung has what it takes to compete on every level. I think they’ll come thru. They have a reputation to uphold. I mean best Screens, Best SOC,.. Android Market leader… They’ll bring the heat

  • thebluegod

4.8 inches? No thank you… I’m looking for a phone, not a weird tablet/phone Samsung is trying to sell.

    • cooksta32676

It will be smaller than the Nexus. There will be nearly no bezel, and should actually have a small footprint. In reality probably not that huge, like a DX to an ip4s.

    • http://twitter.com/_elemenopee_ Kavin Nguyen

Yea if it’s bezel-less like it’s rumored to be then the chassis wouldn’t be that big.

  • @wade_county

Guys this has a smaller footprint than the G alaxy Nexus, and alot of 4.5″+ phones. This is a good thing. While the screen is bigger its maximizing the real estate of the phone. Less bezel ftw.

    • wade_county
      • http://twitter.com/55938 MrSix

Screw that. In my opinion there’s such a thing as too little bezel. With no bezel i’d end up tapping whatever stray icons or links are on the sides of the screen just trying to hold the thing.

        • wade_county

Yea, I see what you mean. Especially on the sides. Maybe they can adjust certain content where the edge of the bezel can’t react to touches? To me, top and bottom bezel (esp. now with ICS) seem easier to eliminate now.

          • cooksta32676

I’d bet they use a non conductive metal rim on the edge of the glass to avoid accidental touches. Now really fat thumbs may still bump it. I’m sure they’ve thought it through…

        • Raven

I bet the glass is sunk in the bezel just enough to help avoid wrap-n-taps and to protect it a bit more.  I love this idea.  I think thick bezels are a total waste of space.

          • http://twitter.com/55938 MrSix

Hmm seems obvious now that you mention it.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Sounds Fantastic…. The 4.8 might kind of be pushing it though. I picked up the Note at ATT and put it right back down. But I’ll bite… Looking forward to the new build materials too… about time the dump the ridiculous plastic. The most important thing is battery life as usual…with Moto leading the way I think Sammy is ready to step up to the plate and Deliver.

    • cooksta32676

The rumor says smaller footprint than a Nexus, just hardly any bezel.

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

        hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…. Now that’s intriguing!

      • Captain_Doug

I hope. 2.6″ X 5.2″ X .4″ is ideal(for me). Although 2.6″ is a max. Everyone makes such a big deal out of thinness but anything under .5″ is fine with me.

  • Michael Forte

It’s funny, every new rumored phone from Samsung has a huge, bezel-less screen in these concept photos, but it never turns out that way.

  • hkklife

First of all, I doubt this OR the Note/Journal will ever hit VZW at all or at least in a timely fashhion. But I sure would LOVE to see a spec-bumped GNex on VZW with this screen!

Secondly, 1080p would be phenomenal just from a content standpoint. This could end up being the default resolution for the larger smartphones, most tablets and nearly all desktop computers in the near future. That said, its well past time PC manufacturers get past those lousy 1024×600 netbook and 1366×768 laptop displays. Quite embarressing when a 4.8″ smartphone has 4x the pixels of a 16″ laptop.

    • speraider430

Well said, I hate that my 13″ laptop has less pixels than my Gnex…

  • Looollool

too big, i’m an android guy but when are manufacturers going to realize that apple is the only one to get it right with size.  many people do not want big phones and 4.8in is too big.  4.3in was just right but anything above that is too big

    • EC8CH

“apple is the only one to get it right with size” by still selling nothing larger than 3.5″??????

    • http://www.facebook.com/japultra Jason Nguyen

I would never go back to a 3.5″ screen.

      • justincase_2008

Yeah use with big hands like the bigger phoens. My D2 fells like a kids phone in my hand.

    • cooksta32676

If you measure it out, it would fit on the same footprint of an Evo or Razr, just with minimal bezel.

    • CORYK333

Hmmm, which one is it…..”apple got it right” OR “4.3in was just right”?????

  • 1bad69z28

All I can sy is “Wow” can’t wait to see the rest of the specs and the interesting previews from Droid life on the this beast.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Verizon will never get this, unfortunately.  Also, if this thing runs Touchwiz (which it will) the only thing that could save it is if it’s supported by the dev community (Kang, CM9, etc.)

    • PC_Tool

      Save it? Hardly..

The only reason I bought the Galaxy Nexus was *because* Verizon didn’t sell the SII.  If they sell the SIII, I’m buying.  The G’Nex will get handed down.

    • Calvin Williams

Touchwiz is amazing. I miss the extra features it adds. It’s also one of the fastest and most battery efficient manufacture skins. I almost left verizon to get the GS2 AFTER I got the Gnex. I hate the gnex.

  • -= )v(urphy =-

4.8??? Bigger is not always better

  • ddevito

Sammy’s still set on beatin the world

  • fvqu

Everyone hopes for a phone with a bezel as small as that, but it never happens.

  • Michael_NM

    Simultaneous means nothing to VZW…

  • EC8CH

Oh… this is from BGR…. *snickers*

  • Captain_Doug

As long as the device isn’t wider than 2.6″. Deal. I’m okay with 720P. 1080P seems a little unnecessary on a 4.8″ screen. If it was thats a ppi of 458ish. Anything above 300 is peachy for this guy.

edit= if it was a 720P screen it’d have a ppi of like 305. Still decently awesome.

    • cooksta32676

Doesn’t the human eye Max out at 375ish?

      • Captain_Doug

Somewhere around there. That’s why 458 is just overkill. I think the Rezound and Nexus screens are amazing. The colors on the spectrum is a little funny even though they advertise more realistic colors. I am super interested to see what LCD2 is all about… hint hint Droid Life!!!

  • DamnNatureYouScary

    Way, way too big.

    • Smtxom

       That’s what she said

    • Calvin Williams

Do you see how small the bezel is?

  • Skip Z

Come on Verizon pick this up

    • FortitudineVincimus

STOP POSTING ABOUT PHONES THAT ARE NOT COMING TO VZW!!!!!!!!

      • feztheforeigner

But it will be coming to Verizon…?

It’s the Galaxy line, they always attempt to release these on every carrier: Verizon will have the option and if they don’t have a better Samsung device they will release it.

(Verizon passes on the Galaxy S II because the Galaxy Nexus is better in every conceivable way, no one would have bought the Galaxy S II)

        • Calvin Williams

          GS2>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Gnex.

          • feztheforeigner

            You’re a Touch-Wiz Idiot

Since when did touch wiz become a plus?

    • PC_Tool

      Since TouchWiz 4.0.

  • Destroythanet

I’ll be pretty pissed if Verizon passes on this.

    • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

      They will.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1097190148 Brandon Girod

There is no reason they would pass on the SIII.

        • SadVerizonCustomer

well there is no reason why they passed on the SII… the galaxy nexus sucks

          • Taglogical

            *GASP* OH NOH HE DIT’NT!!

      • AE35

They will pass if it looks anything like this because there is no room to put their huge ugly logo.

“Also gives handjobs, prints money and solves the national debt!”

Setting everyone up for disappointment, I see.. 1080p..? Really..?!

  • EC8CH

    Sweet.

I’d like to see them release a follow up to their Galaxy Tab 10.1 with equally impressive specs.

    • Tommy Thompson

      They will be.

      • EC8CH

hurry up then, I’d Samsung to take my money mid May :-)

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Hopefully that’s not the Tab 2 10.1 the y announced the other day… because that’s essentially the same device as last year
