Google No Longer “Supports” the LTE/CDMA Verizon Galaxy Nexus? (Updated)

cdma nexus gone

Update:  So rather than make you read through this long drawn out mess, we decided to post a summary to get you up to speed since a number of folks are still coming to this specific post.

This afternoon, a reader of ours noticed that the Android Developer pages were updated to show that they no longer support CDMA devices. Without any word from Google on these changes, we started asking important questions and posted this story since that affects the LTE Galaxy Nexus, XOOM LTE and Nexus S 4G. Could this change the way updates are issued? What about factory images? What does it mean to no longer be “supported?” All questions that we feel we deserved answers to.

Once enough of a stir was caused, a statement was issued by an Android engineer. Basically where we stand now, is that according to Google’s standards for AOSP, CDMA devices cannot be officially “supported.” It’s an odd situation and one that even some of our readers who create their own AOSP ROMs are having a hard time wrapping their brains around.

Thankfully Google has assured us that the LTE Galaxy Nexus and all other “Nexus” devices will still receive timely updates, remain unlocked, etc.

You can read their full statement here.

Wow, so I’m not really sure where to start with this head-scratch-worthy news. Thanks to a reader, we have now realized that the LTE/CDMA version of the Galaxy Nexus that thousands of you purchased, may no longer be considered a “supported” developer device by Google. You will notice in the screenshot above that the device “toro” – which was the codename for the device – has been removed from the list of supported devices. There is also a note above that which reads “No CDMA devices are supported.” Not sure it could be any clearer than that.

Update:  As some have pointed out, the “crespo4g” has also been removed which is the Nexus S 4G with Sprint (another CDMA device).

Update 2:  “stingray” is also gone – that would be the LTE/CDMA Motorola XOOM.

But to make matters even more interesting, we dug a little deeper into a cached page from January 28 that clearly shows “toro” as still being a part of their plans. It also included special CDMA radio instructions for developers which have now been removed. Picture below.

And just in case you needed even more proof, here is the factory image site which says that the LTE Nexus builds are there for “reference only.” We also pulled the cached page of it from January 28 which of course, does not mention “reference only” anywhere:

Why would this happen and what exactly does it mean? Only the Android team, Google and Verizon (probably just those two since it’s all CDMA devices) know for sure.

Could it have anything to do with the Google Wallet situation? We know that the app was updated and made available to basically all Nexus devices within the last couple of days, but not the Verizon version. Maybe there was a breakdown in negotiations which took the phone out of their “Nexus” title requirements. Seems doubtful. Then what could it be?

I think one thing we all want to know is how this impacts updates in the future. One of the main reasons we purchased this phone was to be at the front of the line when it came to new OS deliveries. Will this impact that? Will we still see factory images after major releases? What else changes?

Would love some further explanation from not only devs, but maybe even the Android team on how this status impacts CDMA phones going forward. Why would CDMA not be supported at all? Because it’s a dying technology and its reach is limited? GSM is clearly a more global option.

Update 3:  As our friends at Phandroid have pointed out, this could be Google’s way of streamlining their “supported” devices. GSM is a more widely adopted option across the global, so limiting their official support to those phones probably makes more sense. This more than likely has nothing to do with updates or anything that should completely ruin your day.

Update 4:  Google has issued a statement. It definitely has to do with CDMA tech and its conflicts with AOSP code.

Hopefully we will have some answers soon. Try to stay calm, for now.

way to go verizon. Only you could f*ck up a Nexus

    • Tim242

STFU you idiot. You don’t know what you are talking about. Notice, the SPRINT NEXUS S IS INVOLVED AS WELL. This whole thing is being blown out of proportion.

  • Nsbjj

Reading this on my RAZR Maxx with a slight smile…

    • Topsitee

surprised your lips aren’t locked down like your phone

    • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

How can you read this with that horrible display?

    • Tim242

Smiling about what? This means nothing. You haven’t a clue. Enjoy that awful display.

    • Anonymous

Wow…you got attacked and you basically said nothing.

Fanboyism must be nice. Yea…noticed it starting with the Galaxy S 1 line. Actually…it started with the Droid 1. When the Incredible launched on Verizon the forums were alive with fanboy fights.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Just wait until more mainstream tech media (The Verge, Engadget, BGR) gets wind of this.  Google will have to say something…………….won’t they???? :(

    • shdowman

      I’m sorry….did you say BGR???

  • Anonymous

Meh, if this goes through, I’m done with Android.

    • Tim242

      I hate drama queens.

  • [[[...babysmoker...]]]

I wonder if this has anything to do with Motorola’s forthcoming “developer” device. I am horrified.

    • Tim242

Google already stated that preferential treatment would not be given to Moto.

  • http://twitter.com/brkshr Lawrence Brooksher

The devs will keep us updated on AOSP.

  • http://twitter.com/Thing342 Wes Jordan

Hold your horses. It doesn’t really make sense for Google to have phones that only work on what is considered to be a dying technology, and 2 carriers as dev devices, no?

I don’t think it’s about Google Wallet, as 2 Sprint Phones (The only net in which Wallet is officially supported) were also taken off.

  • http://twitter.com/AmongTheDamned Taylor Durden

Yea, this is total crap.  Calm down people.  Just because the image isn’t available doesn’t mean they aren’t supporting it anymore.  Why would they quit supporting the Sprint version before it is even released?  Everyone needs to stop jumping for these conclusions until there are known facts.

    • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

I’m guessing either they’re simply stopping developer support for the LTE version, which isn’t such a big deal, or they’re dealing with the Google Wallet issue.  Either way, we all need to calm down.  This doesn’t mean we lost direct Google support for updates.

      • http://twitter.com/AmongTheDamned Taylor Durden

I don’t even think it goes that far.  Google Wallet possibly, but I have a feeling there was information in there about LTE or Verizon’s apps.  It could even be that they are replacing it later or don’t want it confused with the Sprint version.  There are a bunch of different possibilities and none of them draw the conclusion the Google is dumping the Nexus on Verizon or Sprint.

  • http://twitter.com/LucasNJohnson Lucas Johnson

I’ll wait for an official word from google before i make any decisions about how i feel about this.

  • Dwjr82

Wtf? I really cant believe this. I rooted and rommed to death my og andbdroid x. I wanted a phone tgatvi could just use and expect frequent updates for minor bugs. This is false advertisment and diffetently grounds for a lawsuit. Or at the very least a refund!!!

    • Tim242

You drama queens make me sick. This means nothing…nothing is changing. Roms nor updates are going away. Stop jumping to conclusions. Btw, this phone was advertised as stock Android, not unlock and root. Verizon does not want you to root, that’s why you void your warranty by unlocking. Geez, so much ignorance around here.

  • http://twitter.com/sirkirby Chris Kirby

This cannot be true. If it is, then I definitely expect a lawsuit. The ONLY reason i bought this phone was because it was an official nexus developer device. Does this mean toro builds will no longer be a part of the ASOP? If so, that will certainly hurt custom rom development.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

They’re most likely closing the Google Wallet loophole.

    • ddevito

      I hope you’re right

    • Tim242

Nope. That makes no Sense. Xoom, and Sprint Nexus. This means nothing.

  • Abbie Rosario

So what does that mean for the Sprint version of the Galaxy Nexus?

  • http://twitter.com/xhaxol Vetal

if it turns out to be true looks like I have at least 4 friends with the Gnex that I will teach to load and run roms.

  • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

so we’ll still get our updates, they’ll just come from Verizon?

  • Anonymous

    Don’t f with me!

  • ddevito

Suckaaaaaaas thats why I am waiting for a nice Moto quad core

    • Topsitee

no such thing as a nice moto

  • http://www.facebook.com/jcortedano Jose Cortedano

Seriously after 2 years of waiting for a verizon “nexus” they do this?

  • http://twitter.com/kejar31 Justin Rogers

I call BS… they are also not listing Stingray (3g / 4G) Xoom.. So if you beleoive that Google is just up and dropping the the Stingray, Crespo4g and Toro devices your nuts.. It would completely damage the trust on the Nexus name

    • Tyler Davis

Happy belated birthday..glad to hear this is your stance, can’t wait to see more Gummy work.

    • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

exactly. Their LTE is the only one in America right now. So at the moment they’re only supporting phones in Europe. I doubt that.

  • Anonymous

Has it been updated yet? No? What’s that? Oh, they’re busy with hardware updates every month. Seriously, get your head out of your ass.

  • Anonymous

Wow I think I just heard the boners wither away of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus “Elitists.”  I am sure your next “latest versions” update straight from Goog… oh no now Verizon will still be awesome.  There will be some awesome applications like Slacker Radio, VideoSurf, VZ Navigator, Vcast Apps, and some other excellent applications to add to your “user” experience.

    • Topsitee

      your spewing garbage

    • mons

I haven’t been running Google’s version anyway.  Unlocked bootloader = custom roms.

  • Matt M

People should probably chill out before jumping to conclusions

  • GCurry

Which company actually represented it as a “pure Google experience” device.   Is that implicit in the Nexus naming?  Who named it?  Since I bought mine from Costco, what responsibility does Costco have, as opposed to Samsung, Verizon, Google?  Wonder whether anything in the packaging said anything about this, or everyone just let buyers believe what they wanted to believe?

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

This just means it’s not an official developer device.  It doesn’t mean we lost direct Google support.  It actually makes sense from Google’s standpoint.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stuart-Pollock/510494412 Stuart Pollock

You people really make me laugh, I mean come on now. Do you really think that Google can class the LTE version as a developer device for a worldwide OS that is only able to be used on 1 carrier in 1 country? You’re too amusing

  • M1ghtysauc3

    Razr Maxx, here I come.

    • Topsitee

RAZR MAXX HD 1080 X for you my friend

    • mons

As infuriating as this is, I still don’t see why you would go with something with a locked bootloader

  • Anonymous

Before you jump ship, lets not forget what we already have: unlocked
bootloader (something VZW customers have been waiting for since the OG
DROID), and all the ROMS and special tweaks that have been outed and
those that yet to be outed, hint, hint CM9! I recently upgraded to a
G-Nex from an OG DROID, and I can tell you that I much rather prefer a
CM9 build than anything stock Google can offer. So don’t get your
panties in a bunch folks… we will be alright!

    • Xfloggingkylex

Except Verizon has had unlocked bootloaders, just no with Moto.  And, CM9 is coming with or without the Nexus, let alone if Google continues Dev support.  All the CM team needs is the ICS source code.  And yes, CM>all but the problem here is people were sold on a Google experience and if this turns out to be true, isn’t the case.

    • http://twitter.com/forgiven_thief Aaron Knapp

Provided the new builds of google can be integrated into the ROMS being put out, we should be fine. Some of the best roms for the TORO were ported from maguro, the GSM Nexus. So, i am not too worried. The thing I am concerned about is whether when android 4.1 comes out if it will break camera functionality or other drivers. When gingerbread and honeycomb got ported to the gtab, it borked some things… but in theory the drivers for the GSM should work on the CDMA version… in theory.

  • Jim McClain

no wonder costco droped the prices so low

  • Trevor-kai Craig

    I’m sad. . .

  • http://Twitter.com/eggoespada Eric Gonzalez

I’m not gonna flip out until we get an official word. If this is true though, I’m not sure what I’m going to do. Reason I got the Nexus was to have the latest and greatest from Google as they intended it. I don’t have the time to root and flash ROMs to catch up in software.

  • Anonymous

im still sitting on 2 upgrades….glad i didn’t cash them in now

  • Anon

Guys relax. You do realize the Nexus S 4G (another CDMA device) was also removed along with this? This issue is not specific to the Galaxy Nexus situation, there is something bigger at hand. Perhaps it will be up to carriers to push updates now?

    • Xfloggingkylex

And you do realize that is EXACTLY why everyone is getting pissy.  Do you really want VZW making sure your Nexus is up to date?

  • Anonymous

Glad I go to AOSP for updates.  CM9/AOKP (whichever is better at the moment) for me.

  • Sean Rowe

We need to demand it be made a developer device. We paid for a developer device and that is what we should have!

  • Anonymous

Wow.  If this is true then I’ll be paying my ETF and getting out of Verizon.

    • John

      No you won’t but that’s ok ;)

  • Lmrojas

Everyone got trolled by either verizon or google. This.sucks

  • iamCC

If this is for real I will probably burn down the Verizon store closest to me.

  • Anonymous

No…No………….Oh my Google. I was having a great day, until now.

  • Cam

More likely we just Got Verizon’d. Up the butt. With a BlendTec.

  • http://profiles.google.com/tonycerdais Tony Cerda

Daaaaaang! If I owned one of them Galaxy Nexus phones, I’d be pissed!

    • http://www.famularo.org/ Jason Famularo

Yup, that’s how I feel. I was expecting priority updates.

      • http://profiles.google.com/tonycerdais Tony Cerda

Aww man dude! I don’t even know what to say to you. I feel for you =/

        • http://www.famularo.org/ Jason Famularo

The phone is still awesome. Google Wallet (mostly) works too ;)

  • Anonymous

: I’m afraid this may be Verizon’s last move against Google that I can tolerate. Sprint more fits my lifestyle anyway as far as pricing, the way they market products, and being that they use similar technology. If this comes out bad I will be so furious with Verizon I’ll take my family plan elsewhere. And I’ll let them know exactly why too before I go.

I should be able to use Google Wallet if I want to. It’s a Nexus device. I’m entitled to updates by Google and for Google to have this device as they envisioned it. Apple doesn’t let them get any say. Why does Google have to? Especially on their one device… we couldn’t just have one could we Big Red. That’s all we asked for… :(

        Ouch…

    • Anonymous

Nexus S is also involved in this too. I guess this article has been updated a few times. CDMA tech is involved. So its not just the Verizon G Nex.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I noticed this morning that the LTE version was taken off the “factory images” page. Why the heck would they do this under the radar instead of simply issuing some kind of press release about this?

  • Anonymous

for the record, I have NEVER accepted an OTA update since Ive been with VZW.  I only depend on the devs.

    • Anonymous

      Ditto…

  • Curtis Martin

I’d like to personally thank Cyanogen for doing what Google and Verizon in their infinite wisdom cannot.
