Rumor: Gingerbread for DROID X Rolling Out this Sunday?

As the title clearly points out, this is just a rumor for now, but one that we’re hoping to know more on very shortly.  The DROID X could start seeing official Gingerbread (Android 2.3) from Verizon starting Sunday at midnight (to business clients first), with the full rollout happening all of next week.  This seems a little early to me and comes as a huge surprise, but a friend in the business has already said that the build is finished and it is now up to Verizon/Moto to decide when to roll it out.  Again, let’s not get too excited until we have more.  Feel free to cross your toes for a bit though.

Update 3/25 – 10:43AM:  Still waiting for that confirmation.  Apologies for the delay on info, we fully expected to have it by now.  Again, let’s not hold out too much hope for this.

Oh, and to get an idea as to what this 2.3 Blur will look like, check out this post.

Screw the update…. I’m running Rubix Focused 2.0.1 and it is FANTASTIC!

  • Tarnette

Do we have to unroot to get the update. I think the answer is yes just want to make sure!!!!

“This seems a little early to me, and comes as a huge surprise”
    I just LOL’D!
Wasn’t this dumb os “released” last november?
    Still excited.
Maybe now my phone won’t reboot by itself every 5 minutes. 😛

I have mixed feelings about this. Part of me wants the newest and greatest but i am gun shy after froyo. I had more issues with my Droid X after the froyo update than before. I also after 9 months finally rooted my X and not sure if i am willing to give that up for Gingerbread. And then there is the whole thing about whether this is even true. How many times did we hear that froyo is coming on this date and then that date and 4 month later after every phone but the Droid X already had it, then we got it. I will believe it when i see it.

  • Mr. Joe

    What about the pro =(

  • I would honestly rather use a damn feature phone than put up with that disgusting mess they call blur. I’m sure I’m not the only one here that prefers a custom Froyo build than any 2.3 coming from Motorola. Why oh why can’t I get a Nexus S with Verizon 😐

  • Joe

I just tried to check for an update and it told me that Check for update is unavailable at this time… Try again Later…. ?

I hope the droid X does get it this week. I’m tired of mine. The random locking up when texting, or trying to wake it up, and the reboots. I know other people who have the droid X, and have the same problems. I can upgrade in July, and I will not be getting another android device, no one updates their stuff. Gingerbread has been out for awhile, and nothing. Just like froyo.

    • Falkor164

um gingerbread has only been around a couple months and if it comes to x this fast it would one of the first devices calm down.

      • Dane

Sorry I’ve been waiting for a fix to stop the lock ups. But in general carriers seem slow to push the updates out.

  • RonsterWVU

With this news… I’ll be expecting it to hit my droid x some time around June….

    BLUR is ugly as sin.

    • The new one (i.e. the Droid Bionic version, if that is indeed the next version of blur) does look pretty slick

forget it…anyone want one….ebay…selling mine…i bought a thunderbolt….even on 2.2….it is so jesus compared to my crappy droid x im selling….I didn’t infer i was christian…it doesn’t lag at all…fast…better battery….and no blur….sense is so much better…im only an htc from now on…

I will be very pissed if my brand new Atrix gets Gingerbread AFTER a phone that is like 8 months old.

    • Buckgrad

Better get used to it. Droid X launched with Eclair, and everyone seemed to get Froyo before us.

    • kretz

you’re not going to get an os update a month after the phone is released

    • Shouldn’t you be pissed off already because you have AT&T?

  • Yes Please!!

  • Anonymous

That would be a nice surprise, but I am not counting on it happening any time soon.

  • Buckgrad

Will believe it when I see it…but that doesn’t mean I won’t be checking for updates in the meantime.

  • Honestly, gingerbread doesn’t seem like it will perform any differently than Froyo. All I want in the update is the updated Motoblur that the Bionic has (with he cool fading away notifications pull down, etc.) and the awesome retro TV affect the screen does when you put the phone to sleep

  • Uncle Paul

Believe it when you see it. the Bootloader is cracked too.. Had my DX since launch day and getting tired of it now… YAWN..

    • Tim242

It is the nicest hardware you will find. The Bionic has nice specs, but is thick and no metal.

  • I Just want a freed up device. Maybe moto could give us that in an OTA

  • cucabueno

i’m trying to get a few thoughts on why Moto is so devoted to BLUR when most of the users don’t like it, nor want it, and in fact, HATE it.

Is it because it’s important to differentiate their android devices (the experience) from other manufactures?
Is it to make it harder for developers to unlock features that the carriers want to be locked?

  • tjhrulz

I dont think it is true, but I want it to be. I REALY REALY REALY want it to be

    • tjhrulz

But does the same go for the droid 2?

  • Mth2134

+1 to sanjay if this be true. Aaaargggghhhh.

    Um…pirate personality break thru?

  • EC8CH

Silly Droid X and your locked bootloader 😛

Sent from my OG Droid running Gingerbread for months now

    • YourMomsFace

No, running a crappy ROM made to look like GB.

      • EC8CH

        Build Number GRH78C is gingerbread

Running a crappy skin on your X makes froyo look like a crappy bowl of dogshit 😉

      • EC8CH

Oh and by the way, roms for the OG are the real deal. It’s the ones for the X that are hack jobs that can only be done after Moto gets around to sending out an update. That’s why this article is so important for X owners, and anyone with an OG could care less if Moto ever sends out an official update to GB.

  • Mikezahorchak

When I check for and update it keeps saying “Check for update was not available at this time Try again later.”

  • Monkey_love2008

I was just about to go to Verizon to buy the Thunderbolt ($119.99)… Should I just keep my Droid X???

    • If you have the money, I would say still go get the T-Bolt. It has the newest Snapdragon processor so it will be faster than the DX not to mention you have 4G, if it’s in your area. On top of that, you should be able to get CyanogenMod 7 and other custom kernels and ROM’s because you can unlock the bootloader. DX will probably never get CM7.

      • Monkey_love2008

I got the email from Verizon so I can get the TB for $119.99 with a 2 year upgrade. I love my Droid X but I want the unlimited 4G which is supposed gone before the Bionic comes out. I figured I can always sell it later. I’m moving to a 4G area in the next few months… I don’t know what to do!

        • Ghghgfh

If it’s not dual core, it’s not anything.

          • Apostrafee

dual core is overrated and pointless, its just cool to say

  • I won’t be getting my hopes up over this rumor, I need to see to believe. I also do not trust twitter contacts, wasn’t P3Droid part of the Nenolod bootloader-gate? However, I may be mistaken.

    • You are absolutely mistaken. P3Droid had nothing to do with it. He was just re-tweeting along with others.

nenolod acted all on his own.

  • lets hope this is true, glad I returned to stock last week.

  • mikex

    What is different in gingerbread?
