Motorola XOOM Live and Available from Verizon (Updated)

The Motorola XOOM is finally available from Verizon.  You can purchase one right away online or head into a store first thing in the morning to experience the first ever Honeycomb tablet.  We’ve got one in our possession right now and in the 5 minutes we’ve had to play with it, are super impressed.  The screen is beautiful, Honeycomb is a lot more polished than we had imagined, and the build quality is top notch.  If you haven’t made the decision to purchase one, I highly suggest that you at least sneak into a store and give it a good 15-20 minutes to see if your mind can be changed.

We’ll be giving it a proper run-through as the day wears on, so keep it close!

Update:  Here is a quick dark room, late night gallery…

Cheers to everyone who sent this in!

Does Best Buy have working demo units, or do I have to go to a VZ store to try one out?

    • Anonymous

My local one did not, but I have no clue if it’s the same everywhere

  • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

I’m definitely buying one this Summer, but hopefully by that time, the full retail price will be $699 or even $599 with no contract, which would make it even sweeter. But regardless, I’m still going to buy one.

    Looking forward to it!

BEST BUY LET ME WALK OUT WITH MY XOOM AND NO DATA PLAN WHATSOEVER.

  • Worm4603

so is anyone getting $50 back from Best Buy, I keep hearing that people who pre-order got a gift card, just curious.

    • UC Student

What happens with the pre-order is that Best Buy asks you to plunk down 50 on a gift card as a commitment for the pre-order and you can use the gift card towards your purchase or something else.

Dude. Totally want one. $799 though… ouch.

When is the wifi-only version coming? And also, what about the samsung galaxy tab 10.1 (supposedly vanilla honeycomb and very comparable to this, right?), LG G-Slate, etc.?

They don’t have barometers, but do both record full HD video (vs. xoom’s 720p). Plus, it looks like the galaxy tab 10.1 is coming with 16GB of internal memory, which is enough for me, and may result in a price tag < $800.

And… maybe even by the time it's released, it'll be capable of supporting flash, MicroSD cards, etc.

I've been sick, waiting for this day for like… ever (it feels like) but now, I think I'm going to have to wait for a few others. Sigh…

And if all else fails, wifi XOOM FTW.

Also, I’m not feeling particularly witty this morning, but… [[ insert sarcastic comment here relative to the uselessness of a barometer ]]

At Best Buy picking up my XOOM and they said that you ARE NOT required to buy a data plan, but that the tablet won’t be “activated” unless you do. Little do they know that we know it can be activated via wifi.

    • Anonymous

Little do you know; the activation is the assigning of a MDN to your data card.

      • Anonymous

Which you can easily do over the phone or in a Verizon store, and my rep will waive the activation fee. I actually want the data plan, but I really wanted to see if I could get out of Best Buy without one.

Now we need the Toshiba Tablet to launch so I can decide which tablet I don’t need that I want to get. :]

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=500860219 Tino Wallace

I want to see a review as well. It’s hard to pony up for a tablet at launch after seeing what happened with the pricing for the Galaxy Tab though…this device is alot better than that, but still.

  • Tony Steve

So I can’t find any info on this any where our I’m just blind, but what’s the battery life like on this warlock? Battery life is my deciding favor between xoom or ipad.

    • Octotron

I believe I had read that at 65% brightness and a continuous video loop it played for 7-8 hours.

Moto purports a 10 hour battery life. Very comparable to the other tablet.

I have an iPad… I would not bother with buying another one. Definitely go Android from here on out. There is just simply so much more that the Xoom will be capable of. Looking to sell my iPad and get into one as soon as the wifi version is out.

      • Anonymous

8 hours 20 minutes to be exact, and that was also with tasks running in the background and wi-fi connected.

  • Chatty Cathy

I’m still unclear – can you make phone calls on this Xoom?

    • Anonymous

…no? Not regular, verizon calls anyway. but you could do some VoIP stuff w/ skype i imagine. there’s a mic, but it’s really intended to be used w/ the camera for video chat. why would you want to make calls on a tablet anyway, or expect to be able to?

  • DroidzFX

Just dont read the article. Stop your bitchin!

On topic the Zoom is sick cant wait for Wifi only

  • Anonymous

    Is the wifi version available?

  • digsoreos

Is Honeycomb on the Xoom deployed without being Blur-ified? If so, expect the Xoom 2 to be Blurred to the max. Motorola probably just didn’t have time to add their flavor this time around. Probably like with the original Droid vs. the Droid X.

    • http://twitter.com/strifejester Justin Ellenbecker

NO BLUR this is a STOCK HONEYCOMB device

  • Wanker

I just wish I knew what features the new iPad will have, I know the hardware will probably not be as good as the xoom but the xoom will very limited number of apps designed for it for a loong time…

What happened to the thunderbolt coming out today

    • Octotron

Looks like another delay. VZW isn’t saying anything. I believe Best Buy tweeted that it thinks it will be the 4th now. Who knows at this point…

      • Tcal

Isn’t not yet announced? How could there be a delay without a proper announcement?

        • Octotron

VZW told Best Buy what day it would be available and allowed the to take pre orders for it. Then, they changed the date but did not release what the change date would be. Best Buy ran off of internal data about what day they would be able to start selling and it has been pushed back again by VZW. Of course VZW did not actually have a specific date, they never do until right before it is released.

The end result is we had several dates for a release and it was SUPPOSED to be released around Valentines day, but it has been delayed yet again.

  • RaptorOO7

Droid = Android. If its Android news then its relevant. XOOM, nice but still want the TB and I will wait until the XOOM ships with 4G installed anyways not really big on sending my gear in.

    • Anonymous

      Droid = Verizon + Android

      • Anonymous

droid is a certain brand. the lg ally is not a droid. neither is the fascinate nor the continuum.

    • Tcal

Droid does not equal Android; one is an OS, the other is not.

  • Anonymous

Any info on the WiFi Only version?

  • Dshudson

is anybody going to get this contract to save the 200, i cant see myself using the data, i have my dx rooted and i always have it on me for tethering?? Opinions pleaase

    • Guest

I plan to get the minimum dataplan just cause you never know when data on the device may be needed while out and about. Even with tethering and hot spots from your phone. That and once the unit is 4G then it will more than likely become my hotspot device. I have a DX also so will not be getting a 4G phone for awhile.

      • Dshudson

I have an upgrade ready, I purchased my DX at full retail, so I will be buying the Thunderbolt when it comes out, with that said, I want to know, can i just run the hot spot on my TB to the XOOM? Does verizon charge for hot spot with the Thunderbolt? I am buying the XOOM in 59min! I always have my phone with me, so I think it makes more sense to get a phone with 4g, not a XOOM with 4g.. no?

  • Anonymous

95 minutes, and it will be mine!

  • Jeff

Honestly, in my opinion – If you buy this for $600 with 2YR Contract. By this Christmas we may seen QuadCore Tablets. So…is it really worth it? I currently own a Droid X and a iPad 16GB Wifi. I think i’m going to wait as much as I want this!!

    • Dshudson

Christmas is a long way away buddy, sure you can wait that long?

      • Anonymous

his ipad will hold him over til then. Fail

        • Jeff

Fail? HaHa. Rooted Droid X+JailBroken Untethered iPad…I think I can wait. The Droid X does everything I need for On The Go. The iPad does my e-mail and my RSS feeds and general browsing. I think I’m good.

      • Anonymous

The iPad should hold him over just fine.. It’s a damn good device!

    • Tcal

Worth it for me! Its faster than my laptop!

    • Anonymous

If you buy this on contract you only have to wait 14 months before you start saving money. You might not be able to buy the first quad core tablets, but you’ll be close. To explain/show my math:

      $600 + 24*$20 = $1080
      $800 + 14*$20 = $1080

So any more months on the non-contract version and you’ll be spending more than the $1080 for the contract version. I’d say that’s pretty reasonable unless you’re planning to spend $800 a year on tablets. Also, if you can cancel your contract for less than the full value of the remaining months you can save money even earlier. Or transfering your contract over to a new device you bought at full price would probably work too.

  • Laura

So what! The verdict on getting the custom Best Buy warrant?

Is it a good idea or a rip off?

    • Anonymous

I’m assuming you’re talking about the Black Tie protection, and there is no question that I’m getting the 1 year, especially since there is no deductible.

    • Alvinm 77

They even take back you product if its water damaged.

  • Alvinm 77

Before I pick one up I need some opinions. Is the Xoom productive in anyway or just a big multimedia device? What’s can it do that my Android phone can’t? …. Honeycomb is nice but I’ve yet to see how this product is gonna change my life (and for $800+ it better change my life)

    • Anonymous

Agreed. It has potential but at this point it’s only a little more useful than an iPad, which is itself just a giant ipod touch. This will only be worth its cost once it gets some more apps, ones that are productive.

  • Anonymous

If I was filthy rich I would get one, but I’m gonna wait till the end of the year when quad cores are annouced, nonetheless, this is a good piece of hardware, look forward to the unboxing and review

    • chubbz

The quad cores will still be around $800 new and then you will most likely say how poor you are. THEN you will wait for something something better….which you still won’t want to buy.

      • Anonymous

I u can read u will see that I never said im poor, ihop is having a special on two pancakes today, next week is four, and the week after is six, i want four pancakes, get the picture

    • Champlification

If you’re waiting for the next best thing, you are going to be waiting forever. There is always going to be a next best thing. When the quad cores come out, there will be something even better on its way that you will want to wait for.

I’m not saying that you should buy a Droid 2 just because it’s available right now, but buy an upcoming device the day it comes out so you can get the most out of it since most devices now-a-days are going to be obsolete in like 6 months or less.

Basically, if you are waiting for more than 6 months for a device, while missing out on all of the devices inbetween, you are just wasting 6 months of your life, in terms of enjoying technology. That’s how I feel about it.

      • Anonymous

isnt this website called DROID life? Maybe it should be called verizon life…

    • @dmv11982

It started when Droid was the premium android phone and has evolved as android has become the premier mobile platform…if you are not interested, don’t read the blog.

      • Mr. Joe

So true! OH WAIT then what’s that Android life I see in the corner? A place to talk about how popular the iPhone is in an Android world?

        • Octotron

The truth is that the Droid line is VZW specific. We attempt to bring VZW specific news and posts to Droid-Life.com as there is not a constantly weekly release of a new “Droid” branded phone. I hardly see the flaw in bringing more and specific information on a wide variety of things provided by the same network that almost all of us currently have our contracts with.

          • Anonymous

Is there a reason none of this recent news surrounding the Xoom has made it’s way to Android Life? Hell, there hasn’t been a post there since Valentine’s Day…

    • NewsWorthy

I’m sorry, did I miss something? Are there any Droids on any other carrier besides Verizon? Also, when the rumors of the XooM/Everest first started, it was purported as a Droid Tablet. As the rumors evolved and we got more and more information about the device, the Driod Moniker was dropped.

    • http://twitter.com/strifejester Justin Ellenbecker

ummmm DROID is a Verizon only brand and that has been said many times that it will focus on not just the DROID brand but all Verizon Android devices. If you want a mix visit an.droid-life.com or phandroid.com, cuz no offense kellex your non verizon updates are kinda few and far between lately and there is a lot of other stuff out there for Android news.

      • Reeper

You my friend along with Xoom Sucks are dumb asses. This site is the business and I think he does a good job of reporting on everything. It just so happens that as of late Verizon has a lot going on and everybody else is a little stagnant.

    • Brandnew527

      You just got eaten alive.

Your right cancel all other articles that don’t have a Droid in them, with the bionic being the next Droid you can wait another month or so before before you would get another artical out of DL. Come on ppl really simple don’t like the title of an artical don’t read it.

If anyone heads in store. Please try and confirm that a 1 year contract is available and if it is, is the price still $600. I ask because online it offers a 1 year for the price of a 2 year.

Never mind. They updated and now its $800. iBlame Apple for all this. Stupid i*hone.
