A minor Gmail update is waiting for you in the Android Market that brings text copying to Gingerbread users and label color syncing to everyone else. And yeah, that’s pretty much it. Go get it now! Market Link.
wow.. finally copy and paste in gmail… for gingerbread only?? of course, I should have known better
Good thing there are only two devices on the market with Gingerbread, right?
Text copying eh? Must of been real hard to create the code. I mean, it only existed for 5+ years.
OG Droid running Liquid Gingerbread 1.2, the new update works like a charm.
How is 1.2? I didnt like the first release at all.
rooted incredible running omfgb 1.1.1 with gingerbread 2.3.2 and it works absolutely fine… copy and paste works as well as label colors… very nice
installed it .. it didnt work.. force closed every time… uninstalled it till they fix it.. wow would have thought better from google..
iinstalled it didnt work.. force closed every time.. unintalled it till they fix it
I am on MIUI and when I try to update Gmail, i get a failed install due to the package not being signed properly…anyone else?
A Gmail update with new features for Gingerbread?
Well, I’d kind of need the Gingerbread update, first. Get on that, HTC!
I just updated and now my SMS won’t work. Thought it was Handcent, uninstalled that. Stock won’t work either. Anyone else?
Also, on DX Liberty 1.5.
I updated on DX Liberty 1.5, everything is fine.
Since you brought it up, I would like to ask. I forget this because its been so long since I owned the og droid: for devices with unlocked bootloaders, once the source for the latest android version is released, can a custom rom be made for that device that is source built? Or do you have to wait until a tweaked version of the official update for said device comes out for it to be considered source built?
(I had a hard time putting that into words, hope it made sense)
like for example: if I get thunderbolt, can somebody make an actual gingerbread rom for it, or will it just be a rom that features elements of gingerbread in it?
If it has an unlocked bootloader, then a custom rom can be made from source. I’m running gingerbread on my Incredible right now thanks to Cyanogenmod 7. It’s fantastic and makes me run around the house like a wet puppy at least once a day.
I have OG Droid, My market does not ever let me know a program has an update, It doesn’t show UPDATE beside it until I actually search for it. (LIKE THIS GMAIL APP) And the checkbox in Auto Update doesn’t work. And my apps will Download, but never install. I have to open it up and do the download again or else it won’t work.
Tried rebooting your phone? Battery pool? I had the same issue when I had an OG. Battery pull seemed to fix it some times.
Try clearing market cache & force closing manually
Still not cloud print.
We are aware of you fondness for delay. However, I’d like to humbly ask the following. When will the Droid, Droid 2, Droid 2 Global, Droid Pro and Droid X get Gingerbread? I release that Gingerbread is getting stale, but I’d like a taste before it’s rotten. Also, as you “plan” for Ice Cream, please note that our favorite flavor is vanilla. As you embark on your tablet journey together tomorrow, please note that your credibility when it comes to XOOM update promises is “blurred” by your ability to update your current products.
Sleepless in Froyo
PS: I would have simply copied this from my Gmail, but… well read the story above.
Here’s the sobering reality. Might as well remove DROID from that list. It’s not ever happening officially. Accept and move on. The rest I would put at May, around the Bionic release, if ever. There is no consumer demand for 2.3 outside of ‘us’. 2.2 was important because it brought JIT and Flash. There’s no motivation here for them to do it any faster. If you want faster, immediate updates…buy a Nexus or start petitioning google to have more updates be available in pieces outside of the carrier in future versions. Otherwise, the Manufacturer mode is here to stay. And the more phones there are on the market the worse and slower it will get. …It is what it is….
Michael, what kind of Android phone do you use? I am not sure about the stale thing. Gingerbread just started rolling out to the Nexus. My experience with my original Droid, 2 updates 6 to 8 weeks each. Droid X six weeks for Froyo update. Best guess for Gingerbread, end of April….beginning of May. With both of these phones I had 2 updates in less than a year. I don’t see that as any worse than iPhone or RIM. Zepfloyd was right on about the 2.2 update and the probability that original Droid won’t get 2.3. But having 2.2 on it will keep it a pretty useful phone. Personally, I don’t mind that Google doesn’t maintain a legacy stream with older phones. The software and hardware are evolving so fast, when I am ready to purchase my next Android phone I want it to be the latest and greatest. Not compromised by the hardware constraints of prior phones. If I buy a top level Moto or HTC cutting edge Android phone and get a couple of good updates out of it, that will keep me close enough. Then I will be ready for the latest/greatest.
Droidfan, I use a Droid X now, but my Droid is still activated. You and zepfloyd both make excellent points. I’m just too damn impatient and frustrated by the fact that updates are delayed by Blur “integration” and ridiculous bloatware. As zepfloyd said, it is what it is. I just wish “it” was different. I think Moto and VZW do a horrible job keeping customers in the loop. However, I am probably in the minority. Like you, my day-to-day phone will probably only see a couple of updates before it’s replaced. However, I reserve my right to complain.
Michael…we should have a section on here for you named “letters to important people.” Thanks for the laugh…I almost pissed my pants!
A new weekly series????
I have to say that I agree fully with Michael since I have the Droid2 running almost blurless Tranquility with Froyo 2.2 (not even 2.2.1) and it sucks how Moto/VZW just don’t care about maintaining and updating software. On the other hand I have my unlocked bootloader OG Droid running SSv5.0 Gingerbread!!! Yes, Gingerbread… and I do have the copy paste feature there. So now please explain how is it that independent freelance developers mostly doing their work on their spare time manage to do better than companies that are supposed to give us good customer service since we are actually paying good money for that service?
Find it lame you need to have Gingerbread to use copy/past. Why can’t this be for all versions?
Works for me on Froyo…
Not long pressing…you have to go to menu.
I can copy and paste, you just go into the menu button and then hit more or something like that and one of the options is select text.
Oh my god when is the launcherpro update going to come out? Come on, Fede!
How is the color labels different? I thought I had color labels in the previous version.
You can now use your custom defined colors… if you made any.
I have custom colors labels and they have been syncing and seen fine in gMail for a while… so I dont get it???
That’s what I’m saying… I have lots of labels, but I use specific colors for 2 of them. And they have been syncing for quite a while.
It’s not that they weren’t syncing before, it’s that they weren’t the right colors. If you picked custom color, the label would show up in the app as white or some other substitute color.
still not sure what your saying, I have screenshots of my gmail that shows correct and matching label colors… and i have like 8 colors I use
If you used the ‘add custom color’ option in the desktop webmail instead of one of the swatches, gmail will now use that color combo. If you used one of the swatches, nothing changed for you.
