Download: Gingerbread Keyboard for Rooted Devices (Updated)

What a day it has been! We finally have our 2.3 Gingerbread release and everyone is happier than a boy on Christmas morning.

While all this joy is in the air, Droid-Life has been exclusively gifted with a Gingerbread Keyboard Port! Thanks to Peter Alfonso of Bugless Beast, we are sitting on some 2.3 goodness.  So after the jump, we will have instructions and the ‘how to’ on getting this on your phone!

In the subject I mentioned this is for rooted devices only. Why? Because stock phones don’t have the rights to install .libs. Sorry non-roots! But hey, time to start looking into the subject of rooting?

Update:  Check out our hands-on of the new Gingerbread keyboard!

*Should work on ALL rooted 2.2 Android devices.

*Droid X and 2 users, see note after instructions.  (Some DX users are seeing miniature versions.  Again, MAKE A BACKUP.)

*Won’t work on 2.1.  You need the newest Voice Search app from the market.

*Good idea to make a back up of your LatinIME.apk from your /system/app folder in case something goes wrong.

1. Download .zip file HERE (This is the new fixed version.)
2. Place on root of SD Card and boot into Recovery.
3. Install .zip as you would themes etc.
4. Reboot and select “Android Keyboard” under Input Method and you are good to go.

*Note* – DX users, “In Clockwork, go to mounts and storage>mount system and then back to install .zip from sd card”.

I hope you all enjoy everyone! Anyone wanna take a gander at what else is next from 2.3?

Please show love to Peter by following his work on his Twitter.
And be sure to check out all of his work on his website! We love this guy!

    not working:

    E: Missing file:
    E:Verification failed

  • Ds1

Works great on my droid, very nice

  • Jimmalachi

I can't replace words with suggestions from the dictionary. Instead of replacing the selected word with a new word, the keyboard just inserts the new word where the cursor is, making one big mess.

  • Onevision83

Can this run on Cyanogen? If so, how do I install a theme in it?

  • official updated pete gingerbread ver. is out

    • CCx Silent

Thank you very much. But for some reason when I install (first one you released). It FC's once I reboot. I have restored my rom and tried again a few times, but I keep having the same problem. Any Ideas? I am running stock rooted rom

  • Jawshua

Ahhhh! I hate how you have to be rooted for this stuff!

That's okay I know some stock keyboard won't beat out my ShapeWriter slide keyboard cause it's the absolute best!

  • El El Kool J

    And replace swype! No way…

  • just talked to pete himself, he's gonna fix his port once exams are over this week…

  • Yahoo123

is the note for the dx the same for the d2

    • HiHoSilver

  • HiHoSilver

For those with the tiny keyboard issues try this: http://bit.ly/dRIwKf It worked for me on a droid 2 running fission 2.2.2 SP1 RSB

  • alex

Just got mine on my og…with this one and swype..the best keybords on the og..very happy

  • Would this work on 2.2.1? (I just dont want to mess anything up)

  • Adm930

Doesn't work for me either on my Droid X, I select the Android keyboard and it force closes…So annoying

    • CCx Silent

Same thing happens to me on my D2. Ive restored and reinstalled a few times, but to no avail

  • Hey @Tim-o-tato , can we get more specific instructions on installation plz?

    • adam

  • Android KB – http://www.multiupload.com/V6M
    DroidX KB – http://www.multiupload.com/RFU

Install as you would any theme…

    • RoadsterHD1

Thanks dude, this is real cool….

  • Laz

Keyboard looks awesome and works but the prediction doesnt. I notice that it will predict my contacts though. Running latest miui on d1

  • For everyone on a DX that didn't make a backup, just into rom manager under WJD designs and he has the stock multitouch keyboard in black.

  • Please get this updated to us with a working zip. I really want to use this as my primary keyboard. Thanks 😛

  • arirang

If limited auto-correct is a show-stopper for you then reinstall your ROM to restore default keyboard. No need to wipe data or cache.

  • Retrokid223

what theme is that in the status bar?

    • Laz

      Looks like miui to me

  • Keithsmnr

Zero problems just needs a dictionary, anyone have a dictionary file?

  • StuntinX

Dont know about you guys but i gotta mini keyboard after flashing on my X. Love the theme for it tho

  • so after i installed through recovery.. my power button stopped functioning, i then had to do a battery pull since i was stuck in recovery mode (couldn't get back to the reboot screen). I then had to restart my phone by plugging it into my charger. Then I restored a backup and power button is working fine again.. anyone else have this problem?

  • Me

    Thanks Pete!

  • Cnix11

    How do you install it?

    • Follow the directions above…you will need to install it from the recovery console.

  • Xeneize480

how come here looks big and my phone looks small??? =(

  • FortitudineVincimus

Oh, BTW.. I hope this means he will be prompt about making his customary odexed and deodexed rom versions of 2.3

  • FortitudineVincimus

why is there a “Settings” button IN the keyboard?

  • RoadsterHD1

Where can we get the dictionary for this?

  • Beegore

Thanks droid life. You messed up our phones again.

  • Jager07

Shabing! Installed ok the first try. Still like Swiftkey *much* better, though.

    OG Droid running SS 4.9.1

    • Jager07

However, same issue here with the auto-correct not working. :/ Lame.

  • Mr Blurryfingaz

mount and storage> mount system and back out to apply zip from sd doesn't seem to work on the droid 2. Its still miniature.

  • shanklin07

This is a good look! Thanks Pete, and DL.

  • GlitchZero

FC's as soon as I touch anything on the keyboard, on a rooted Desire Z. Looks nice, though.

  • RoadsterHD1

    • Mrwolf

      • RoadsterHD1

FINE…. but we need a dictionary!!!

  • Nailerdog

Some of messed up and didn't back it up. Can someone please post the stock keyboard file fotr the DX?

  • Jeff

Diggin the keyboard layout in the horizontal.

  • Slow88lx

Any support thread from the author? It seems this is working less that 50% of the time. I personally am getting a never ending loop of FC's, reinstalled twice. I assumed this was going to add a keyboard not replace….should have read better and backed up. I tried a Titanium backup I had of the 2.2 keyboard, but no luck. It's only ok right now because I started Swyping my ass off.

  • Armijo

yeah same here, droid x using apex seems really small but still way accurate.

  • adams

cconstant force close, how do I fix that?

  • Mr Blurryfingaz

They wanna know how to make it bigger tim….

  • i just installed it and it doesnt seem to auto correct very well, all of it's suggestions are the last names of contacts rather than words used in conversation… anyone else?

    • theineffablebob

It doesn't do auto-correct well because it no auto-correct libraries are included.

    • NorCalGuy

While reading the above arrival you will notice at about * number 5 it says that auto correction is not properly working…

  • Where is the “enter” key on this keyboard? Am I missing something? Also, how do we get to that tiny window that lets you do detail movement through text?

Other than that, this is a home run.
