DROID 2 Update to Version 2.3.20 Rolling Out Soon, Possibly at Midnight

The Droid 2 update we talked about back on the 18th is finally ready to be downloaded to devices.  Well, almost ready.  As you all know by now, the new Motorola devices allow for “pulling” of updates and if you check your D2 About>System Updates page, you might not be able to grab it just yet, but wait until midnight and that might change.

The update includes:

  • Improved battery life.
  • Heightened proximity sensor accuracy to enable faster screen response.
  • View the Weather widget in both landscape and portrait orientation.
  • Simpler setup, improved user interactions, and better notifications for Visual Voice Mail.
  • Background Email Sync during display inactivity for better user experience.
  • Support for email domain suffixes containing more than three characters.
  • Keep text messages organized with chronological in-box screen.
  • Edit text messages after you’ve inserted a video file.
  • Improved audio sound during recorded video playbacks.
  • Stream Guided Tour videos on device in Help Center application with ease.
  • Faster location tracking during GPS navigation.
  • Faster transitions between Wi-Fi and 3G in data connection.

  • New ability to add pictures from your Gallery to a contact.
  • Export all your contacts to the SD card.
  • View details of Social Networking contacts.
  • VZ Navigator is now preloaded on device.

I did the update but all it keeps saying is blur service username and password incorrect, I didn’t know I had one ….. now it shuts off all the time

  • NoRootLuck

Cant root my Droid2 after the update!?!

Is there anyway to get a screenshot app without being rooted on Droid2?

  • Stephen D

“Enhancements: VZ Navigator is now preloaded on device” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. This is quite the update though.

  • Mr.Steve

    I can't pull the update!

  • kriven4437

anyone got a mirror for this update tired of waiting

  • Droid-ice

I was so happy at frist got me jumping up and down though it was the 2.3 gingerbread but is not just a little chang to the lock screen and clock and stuff…. browsing speed is the same……… oh on there a minute let me go back and check.. holy cracker moly is 3 time the speed lol.

  • DansD

    Lost root with 2.3.20

  • Tkampka

well, I was rooted. Now after update, no root, crapola

  • I'll stick to my fission rom.

    • Mmmmmmmm

same here.. Im sure the updates will be included in Ang's next update, if not already.

  • El El Kool J

Ok non of those “Enhancements” are actually enhancements.. export contacts(D1) view details of social network contacts (FB/twitter/tweetdeck/hootsuite etc..) VZ nav (garbage) Gallery to a contact.. (contact to gallery is already a feature) well on the D1 it is

  • rals

Can't seem to pull the update

  • Can anyone tell me if this update fixes the facebook widget, to allow you to only sync your existing contact, not every damn “friend” on facebook?

  • B-Do

I noticed that there is “heightened proximity sensor accuracy to enable faster screen response”. My last three Droids (the original), started hanging up when the phone was on my shoulder (after 2.2). The proximity sensor didn't pick up that the phone was on my face, and my cheek would disconnect the call. Verizon upgraded me to a Droid 2.
Can someone tell me if they are able to talk while the phone is on their shoulder after this update? I don't want to download if the same problem is going to come up.

    • I've had that issue in the past, but I haven't had it with the new software yet.

      • B-Do

        Thanks man, I appreciate it!

  • Stupid Verizon and their navigator. I hate hate hate hate the fact that they continue to take up my precious phones memory with these crap apps I want nothing to do with. If i want the app i will download it, plan and simple.

    • Atavanhalen23

  • Lovn my X

Ok can some one help me with this. I downloaded Tango but realized that it really doesn't work as good without having a front camera(Stupid me). I have to the Droid X and I thought that it came with it just like the EVO. Can some explain this to me? Thanks

    • The Evo has a front facing camera, the Droid X does not. You could still do video calling and the like, but you won't be able to see the other person without using a mirror.

  • Is anyone else having trouble with their Yahoo Mail syncing after the update?

    • After pulling the battery it's working again… or Yahoo fixed something. But it's working.

    • kellex

Some of us didn't get the update yet. 😛

      • I can't believe that many people haven't gotten the update. After I pulled it on my D2 I downloaded it on my girlfriend's D2 as well right after…

  • Well I already have VZW 2.4.5. 🙂

  • Nairo

Thus far seems alot smoother when swiping thru screens…..

  • Bob

So if this update introduced VZ Navigator to the D2, does that mean that it gets rid of Google Navigation or will it just have both? Does VZ Nav become one of those annoying apps that you stays running in the background and app killer can't shut down?

  • droidn

Does this mean VZ Nav is going to be on the DX at the next update for it? Probably so…WEAK!

    • tjpeco

Hate to burst your bubble, but VZ navigator is already on the DX.

  • Jduro923

That's just great!…..now when the hell are they releasing a update fix for the Droid X. My DX was running perfectly before this Froyo 2.2 came around. Don't get me wrong I love the thought of my device being able to support Adobe Flash 10.1. But c'mon Motorola/ Verizon get with it.

  • is this Gingerbread?

    • This is a System Update…not an Android Update.

  • Update received, not installed yet, will likely wait until the complaints do or don't roll in first. 😉

  • Patricia Edmonds

Just got the update 🙂 So far so good…

  • Zerog20

Just got my update I fail to see anything new other than vz which is more annoying than anything

    • They fixed Exchange e-mail sync and changed the lock screen. And it actually does switch between 3G and WiFi much faster.

  • I63mike_saechao

I got mine it make 1% out of 10 for me nothing much really.

I know this is off topic but if anyone hasnt seen it verizon has gone off the deep end and started selling iPad package deals on there website…..im going to t-mobile where steve jobs cant try to sell me something with i at the begining

    • Pandemic187

You're going to go to a terrible provider just because they don't have a phone you'll never actually see regardless of your provider as long as you don't buy it? Oh, well that makes sense…

  • Jmill

Just got the update, but it failed to install on rooted Droid 2. Hmm….

    Update Status

    The software update failed!

  • DBK

Just got it. So far so good. Anyone know how to cleanse the phone of the evil VZ Navigator? First time Droid user here, so I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

    • Root 🙂

      • DBK

I’d prefer not to. Is that the only way? Damn……..

        Thanks anyway.

  • Droid2diord1

First…. lol. Just got the download and was able to pull it from the cloud Just make sure that your not on a wi-fi connection, it made a difference for me.

  • well so much for rumors that Gingerbread is going to be 2.3

    • It's a system updage, not an Android update.

    • From the comments above:

“System Version = 2.3.20 with this update. Android Version will still be 2.2. Hope this helps. :)”

  • Craym87

2.3? How did they settle on the naming?

  • hahayeahright

Relax 🙂 If you're rooted, you can just wait for this to be applied to a ROM. No need to worry about losing root 🙂

  • chuck

ok im lost sooo the d2 already has 2.3??? i thought 2.2 was froyo, and as of the otherday i was reading 2.3 will be gingerbread so whats up here?

    • Michael_NM

System Version = 2.3.20 with this update. Android Version will still be 2.2. Hope this helps. 🙂

      • So what happens with me…. R2D2's are on software verison is 2.4.5…..

        • marley

          beep boop beep beep.. ziiing.

          • The350zWolf

            Ha LMAO 8^D

  • LukeDukem

“Export all your contacts to the SD card”
Huh? They are already on the cloud.. Google Contacts

    • Evileclipse420

Im pretty sure all your contacts are stored in the same partition as apps on your phones local storage as well. Should open up more space to apps that arent configured to be stored on the sd card yet.

      • LobbyDizzle

Yeah, contacts take up a lot of space. I have so many friends!!!

    • El El Kool J

ya the D1 already exports contacts to the sd card into a .vcd file. just go to contacts menu import/export export to sd.. so not an update just a feature they must of left out on the D2?

  • First

    • Atavanhalen23

You are so off its not even funny.

  • Xeneize480

Export all your contacts to the SD card? Wait D2 was not able to do this? My DX does =)

    • Mmmmmmmm

holy sh*t, holy Sh*t, holy Sh*t…. Im breathing heavy.. ahhhhhhh

  • mathees

omg VZ navigator! preloaded! and they wonder why we root our phones…

    • LukeDukem

exactly why in the world would you want VZ navigator when you have Google maps? I am dumbfounded by this.

      • What about all of the people that have way more money than brains? Oh yeah, they bought an i*hone lol.

    • EC8CH

      Memo to VZW:

No one wants your crappy overpriced Navigation software.

  • Tbaybe02

  • Hm. I have a friend who will be stoked on this news…I just cant wait for the incredible hd.

  • Kbjhon

    • Michael_NM

Yes that's correct. First after me. 🙂

      • Sprotthedestroyer

I'm the lowest. Hehehe. Wait… that's not good is it? Oh well

  • Michael_NM

Cool! Dr. Droid working very late! I hope this is coming to the Droid X too! 🙂

“Soon” is, of course, the operative word…

    • Chris Nimon

They can stay in the pool as long as they stay in the shallow end 🙂

  • Dinofan01

what does this mean for root users? sorry ive never had an update as a rooted android user.

    • Dinofan01

oh and hopefully theres a fix for the muisc app crashing randomly.

      • jason6g

rooted users will have to do one of two things. revert to stock to grab the update, or wait for developers to include the new goodies in their roms. I typically wait till a descent rom is put out then theme it to my likings. as updates come out, you can also grab the various changed files and mix and match the new with the old (ie. replace your current camera.apk with the camera.apk in the update)

        • Numbskill

So even if i’m running on the stock rom, if i’m rooted i won’t be able to pull system updates?

Do i need to flash an sbf and re-root afterwards?

(as of 8:00 am PST my phone is not finding the update)

    • Ortrizchief

no more updates for root phones is only for original
