Google Spaces launched in May of 2016, and as detailed this week by Google, the platform will be deleted (along with all of its content) following a complete shutdown on April 17.
Launched as a place for groups to share content, including links to stuff online, documents or even YouTube videos, both the app and web client will become read-only on March 3. That means you won’t be able to open up a new Space or add new content to existing Spaces, plus new members won’t be able to join.
Here is what’s posted to Google’s support page, detailing the closure.
A few important details:
Spaces will be read-only on March 3rd: This means you can’t create new spaces, posts or comments. Also, new invitations can’t be sent, and new members can’t be added to spaces.
Between now and April 17th, you can:
- See, save, print, and delete your content.
- Delete any spaces you created, leave any spaces you joined, and remove people from your spaces.
- Report abuse in Spaces, and block other Spaces users.
After April 17th, 2017: Spaces and their content will be deleted.
Our goal with Spaces was to create a better small-group sharing experience, and we’ll use what we’ve learned to improve other Google products and services. Thanks again for your support.
Sincerely,
The Spaces team
RIP, Google Spaces.

Greatest app I have ever used for saving my content for myself to come back to. Well structured, organised with beautiful design. I’m really sad to see it go … Maybe it didn’t fulfil it’s original intent, but it surely fulfilled my every need. 🙂
Sounds like it was a less functional Slack.
What is this? Another messenger?
My family actually uses this for sharing pictures and videos and it works pretty well. I’m sad to see it go, but I am not surprised. They never really updated or improved things much since the launch, so I figured it would get killed eventually.
Shared albums in Photos works well.
We (my family) used Spaces for a while and it was OK but could/should have just been part of Google+. Spaces was mostly redundant. Not that Google isn’t the master of half-baked redundancy.
Spaces was a great product, in theory, but no one used it. This is not surprising news.
Shocker!!!
What is with google’s obession with becoming a social network
It’s part of the plan to evolve to SkyNet.
So was this the remake of Orkut remake of Wave, Replacement for G Plus?
Hopefully I am not the only one who had never heard of this.
I legitimately have never heard of it.
I got paid 104 thousand dollars previous year by freelancing on-line and I did that by working part time for several hrs /day. I’m using a money making opportunity I came across from company that i found online and I am so excited that i earned such great money. It’s very newbie-friendly and I’m just so happy that i found this. This is what i do… https://twitter.com/StinnettMargar1/status/835382203185967104
NO YOU DIDN’T!
YOU’RE A LIAR!!
One of the more useless apps I’ve ever had the pleasure to use.
They’re kicking their product killing into overdrive.
Probably a good thing.
This is a good thing. Google has the “too many boiling pots” problem right now with seemingly no guiding vision from the top as to what they’re trying to accomplish overall.
