3 Android Apps Worth Owning: AfterShip, Reddit News Pro, theScore

Last week, in our first “3 Android apps worth owning” feature, Tim told you about Fenix, Zooper Widget Pro, and Mailbox, all of which are apps that the DL team can’t live without because of their ties to Twitter, phone customization, and organization. In this week’s version of the same feature, I’m going a little more personal, choosing instead three apps I use on a daily basis and can’t imagine not being included in the first apps I install on every single new device.

From better shipment tracking for all of the products that are sent my way, to keeping up on the latest in reddit, to staying up-to-date on my favorite sports teams, these are three apps worth owning (two of which are free).

AfterShip

I track a lot of packages on a daily basis – a lot. From new phones and tablets and accessories that are on their way to my house to be reviewed, to what seems to be a constant stream of personal items (read: shoes) for my wife and I, to the never-ending Amazon Prime orders, I get more packages than most humans ever should. To keep track of these, I have moved onto AfterShip, as it organizes all of their tracking numbers into a single location, provides me with notifications of each along the way as they make their stops, and does things like auto-detection of carriers by pulling in copied tracking numbers from my phone’s clipboard.

And keep in mind that I have subscriptions to UPS and FedEx premium tracking services, but rather than trying to keep up with older emails or logins to each website (FedEx, UPS, USPS, etc.), AfterShip does it all for me in a single location. Of course, I also let Google Wallet and Google Now track shipments, but they seem to miss more often than I’d like.

If you track packages on the regular, get AfterShip now. It’s free.

Reddit News Pro

By no means am I a heavy reddit user. With that said, I still need my fix of /r/Android, /r/sports, and a few other subreddits from time to time. My go-to app for the last few months has been Reddit News Pro. After its most recent redesign that introduced touches of Material Design, along with a Falcon Pro-esque (the original FP) double-navigation panel setup and a handful of themes (I tend to favor apps that have dark themes), I have yet to even consider looking for another reddit option. And I know there are dozens out there, it’s just that the mix of swipe gestures, beautiful UI, and constant updates has made this app well worth its $3 asking price.

theScore

If you were to ask me for my favorite sports app, I wouldn’t even hesitate in saying that theScore is it. At one time, I was fully invested in ESPN’s ScoreCenter (now Sportscenter) app, but it’s terrible redesigns and bugs and ads (holy hell there are lots of ads in that app) have kept it off most of my phones for over a year. TheScore, on the other hand, is clean, powerful, packed with customization alerts and settings, and provides me with the quickest real-time updates of almost any app I have ever used. Seriously, the 2nd quarter of a Blazers game ends and theScore has a notification there almost before the buzzer sounds.

The only thing this app is missing is cloud profile support, so that if you change phones, you don’t have to fully setup all of your favorites, notifications, etc. I would hope that they are considering it, but either way, this is the sports app you need to be using.

Oh, they also update the app quite frequently, adding in special sections for hot sports events of the time, so that you never miss a story.

Does no one use BaconReader? IMO the best free reddit reader out there.

BaconReader is light years behind Reddit News.

I had issues with USPS. It said update pending and USPS website is updating.

Is anyone else surprised that ESPN Sportscenter (formerly Scorecenter) still isn’t available for the Nexus 6? What’s so special about this sports app that it cannot be run on an N6? I’ve contacted ESPN, and they “know about the issue” and are “working hard on a solution” (or something similar). So what gives? Are they afraid of the big screen?

The problem with theScore is that it doesn’t have a page with all the scores on it that’s right there and up front. That sucks.
SC is much better for quick scores for all sports.

The best part of theScore is its ability to follow individual players in whatever sport.

Eh, I used the score for a while, but I recently switched to Yahoo Sports. Much simpler, faster and cleaner. Has a great “Trending” section as well as “My Teams”. The real kicker is it has a true black background, which is great for AMOLED screens.

There is one major issue with theScore app. It is a huge CPU and battery hog even when the program is not open. I have a OnePlus One and if I have it installed my CPU load goes wild when checked with CPU-Z. It runs in the background even if you have not opened it. I’ll pass until they fix it and it doesn’t run in the background.

NO NO NO! The best shipping tracker app is –

    Deliveries Package Tracker
    by oRRs

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.orrs.deliveries

    – Background Notifications:
You don’t have to always open the app and check for new statuses. For natively supported providers, “Deliveries” offers the option to send you a notification when there is a updated shipping status. Please note that by default, background notifications are only delivered when on WiFi. You can make your own choice in the preferences though!

    – Sync:
Synchronize your deliveries across your different devices via our synchronization service.

Reddit is fun use to be my go to reader. I would try the others and come back to it, but Reddit News has won me away. The last update is simply that good.

How’s Reddit news compared to reddit now? I have reddit now and its pretty damn good.

agree about the ESPN app. completely sucks now. And says it’s not compatible with my Nexus 6. I use the CBS Sports app. Really great.

Cool function – if you copy a tracking number to your clipboard and open up Aftertrack, it asks if you automatically if you want to add it.

It’s a well made replacement for Slice which was destroyed with its latest major update in December.

I love reddit news, its just missing a few features like a proper card view with a bigger image preview like in reddit sync.

Very much agree on the Score needing a cloud profile, as an avid flasher of all things Android, setting that app up every time is a pain.

Even more, it needs a Material refresh. The dark Holo theme is looking very dated these days.

I prefer package buddy. I like the map view of all the stops my packages make. It’s fun watch them jump close and closer to me on the map!

Another +1 for Package Buddy. It lets you scan bar codes within the app when you’re about to ship an item.

AfterShip has scanning as well. 🙂

    2. Ted Pavlic Avatar

Package Buddy also lets you manage your shipments from the Desktop browser. Does Aftership do that?

It’s one giant discussion board split into ‘subreddits’ for practically anything, like cats, cars, pictures, grandmasdish etc…

Another +1 for theScore. Been using it since my Blackberry days. Best app for just merely checking scores. I do use Sportscenter for my notifications, but 95% of my sports interaction with my phone is checking scores, & theScore does that the best.

Sports and Sports Entertainment are not the same thing. Keep them separated. There should be enough dirt sheets floating around on the web that you can keep up to date with.

Has battery usage been improved for The Score? When I last tried it over a year ago, it was a battery hog; even on days when I had no notifications and didn’t open the app, it was one of the top battery users on my phone.

Other than that, I did like the app. If that has been fixed, I may need to give it another try.

With Reddit News Pro, can you submit links and comment on entries, or is it simply a Reddit browser? I tried Reddit Sync Pro because of its gorgeous UI, but ended up going back to Bacon Reader because I couldn’t comment on anything.
