All of today’s news surrounding the Fitbit Air and Google Health is pretty exciting because it feels like a major shift for Google into the health and fitness space. While they’ve been here for some time with apps like Google Fit and their acquisition of Fitbit, all of it felt separated in kind of an awkward way.
Going forward, Google Health is the hub for everything health and fitness related, so whether you have a Pixel Watch or new Fitbit Air, an Android phone or an iPhone, Google has the place for your health to be tracked.
But with this big change comes a potentially bigger change for Fitbit users. Those who have been with Fitbit for a decade+ are about to wave goodbye to the Fitbit app. Google Health is the replacement for Fitbit, even as the brand still lives on through the new Fitbit Air and older Fitbit models that are still available.
Updating Fitbit app to Google Health
Going forward, Fitbit users will no longer open the Fitbit app to track steps or sleep. Instead, they’ll reach their fingertip to the Google Health app.
Google has at least promised that this will be an easy upgrade. In fact, Fitbit users will get an automatic update to the app with new branding and Google Health icon. All of your data will remain in the new Google Health app and you’ll continue using your Pixel Watch or Fitbit device without the need to set anything up.
This really is an upgrade or update to Fitbit, where you’ll find the new app UI that has been in public preview testing for months. It’s pretty nice, certainly modernizes the Fitbit/Google Health experience, and prepares it for the future with Google’s Health Coach and Google Health Premium, if you subscribe.
While this all may sound like such a big shake-up to Fitbit users, the update to Google Health should happen automatically without the need for you to do anything.
Google says the new Google Health app will begin rolling out on May 19.
