Verizon Says Its Galaxy S22 Line is Getting Android 13, But It Isn’t (Updated)

Samsung - Galaxy S24 Launch Date

Oh these carriers. They got us excited for a moment, but it’s clear that even as Verizon says the Galaxy S22 line is getting Android 13 starting today, we know it isn’t. All of the S22 phones on Verizon are getting an update, though, just not the One UI 5 update.

Verizon updated its Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra pages this morning to show that the Android October update is here, as well as the big upgrade to Android 13 and One UI 5. The release date is labeled as September 28.

However, the build numbers are still very much of the Android “S” variety, not Android “T” or Android 13. The new October builds for each device are as follows, where you’ll notice the “SP1A” part is in reference to Android “S” or Android 12:

  • Galaxy S22 Ultra: SP1A.210812.016.S908USQS2AVI1
  • Galaxy S22+: SP1A.210812.016.S906USQS2AVI1
  • Galaxy S22: SP1A.210812.016.S901USQS2AVI1

So that’s cool, that Verizon thinks the Android 13 update is close enough to put out an entire changelog and tell its customers about it. This just isn’t it yet. This redditor also claims to have grabbed it and confirmed it is not Android 13.

UPDATE: Verizon has updated their page to note that this is the October security patch that also fixes that missing text message bug the S22 and S21 series were experiencing.

Resolved an intermittent issue where the device didn’t receive text messages.

Before they realize the error and pull it, this is what the page looked like:

Galaxy S22 Ultra Android 13 Update

The changelog is ridiculously long, by the way. Even if we believe the One UI 5 update doesn’t bring a ton of new and useful features, Samsung and Verizon are doing their best to tell us otherwise.

We’ll let you know if it really goes live.

If the S22 on the thumbnail has a case on it, can anyone tell me what it is?

My hope is that this update fixes the issue where the s22 won’t receive texts unless you restart your phone, which is why the changelog is wrong and they hurriedly pushed this out.

I have not been having that issue at all until very recently. Annoying.

Looking forward to Android 13/One UI 5 if for nothing else other than lingering bug fixes. Last year the Android 12 update rolled out to the S21 line the week before Thanksgiving. It would be nice to get 13 a little sooner this year.

I was so overjoyed when I saw the my S21 got the update. UI5! Android 13! But it was all a joke. Nope. My phone was still UI 4.o and Android 12. The Verizon customer service person, and I mean you, Felix, said it was a Samsung problem, and I should contact them. I have to wait for Verizon to issue an update. I can’t use the updates directly from Samsung. However, now that their update didn’t work, suddenly, they direct me to contact Samsung.

I saw the update tonight and installed. The term SOBs might have been muttered after it booted.

Better question is does the update fix the bug causing users to not receive texts until they restart their phone?
