Sprint Says It’s a “New Day for Data” in America, Introduces 20GB $100 Data Package

On Friday, Sprint’s new CEO, Marcelo Claure, said during a company-wide town hall that we should expect major pricing changes for his company’s wireless plans come today. He has delivered by announcing that Sprint will now offer a family share data plan with up to 10 lines and 20GB of data for $100 (line access charges gone through 2015). For that amount of data, you are looking at prices that certainly cut under AT&T and Verizon.

The details in this one are all over the board and include a special 2GB per line bonus for a limited time, so hang with me while I update this post and break it all down.  (more…)

Verizon Quietly Introduces New Single Line Plan – 2GB of Data for $60, Dropped Down to $50 With Edge

Yesterday, Verizon quietly introduced a brand new single line plan that certainly isn’t the worst deal you will find in the wireless industry. At $60, the new plan offers unlimited talk and text along with 2GB of data per month. You can lower that rate further by buying a new phone through Verizon’s Edge device payment plan and shave off another $10, bringing your monthly service bill to $50 (plus the Edge payment).  (more…)

Unlimited Data Users Losing Another Upgrade Workaround at Verizon Come August 24

Unlimited data users on Verizon, at this stage in the game, know most of the tricks when it comes to upgrading phones at a reasonable price. In other words, since Verizon took away unlimited data plans years ago, users of those plans have had to find loopholes in the system to allow them to keep their plans without having to fork out full retail prices for phones. Unfortunately, one of the most commonly used loopholes is about to be closed up. Come August 24, Big Red will force upgrades used on smartphones to keep data packages for the remainder of a contract, according to sources of ours.

Let me explain what this means.  (more…)

FCC Chairman Not Excited About Verizon’s Plans to Throttle Unlimited Data Users

Last week, we exclusively reported that Verizon planned to begin throttling the top 5% of unlimited data users with 4G LTE phones come October 1, a move which Verizon has since confirmed. The throttling is a part of Big Red’s “Network Optimization” policy, which up until now has only affected 3G customers with unlimited data. As you can imagine, this news didn’t exactly excite those with unlimited data plans who have been long-time Verizon customers. According to a letter sent to Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead, FCC chairman Tom Wheeler isn’t excited either.  (more…)

T-Mobile Launches Own “Best Ever” Family Plan, 10GB of Data Plus Unlimited Talk/Text for $100

T-Mobile’s John Legere is just as sick of seeing AT&T ads for their “Best ever prices” family plan as you are. To try and directly compete with that plan, T-Mobile will launch their own best ever-like pricing, with a new family plan that runs just $100 per month for four lines, yet includes the same 10GB of data as the competitors, along with unlimited talk and text.

For comparison, T-Mobile put together a chart to show you how this new plan beats out not only AT&T, but also similar plans from Verizon and Sprint. Since the chart was created by T-Mo, you have to take it for what it is. However, it does show the major points here, like price, which is $60 lower and the 2.5GB of data per line, with no overages. T-Mobile is still giving away unlimited data and text in over 120 countries with this plan, plus they are letting you stream music from many of the top music services without it counting against your data.  (more…)

During T-Mobile’s newest Uncarrier event, titled 5.0, the company is making its latest, potentially industry-changing moves that start by offering customers a 7-day free test drive of their network with an iPhone 5s. They also announced that their Wideband LTE is now in 16 markets and VoLTE is in 15 total (here is the full list).  (more…)

Thursday Poll: Tiered or Unlimited Data?

Back in April of 2012, almost a year after we started to see tiered data plans takeover the wireless market, we asked our readers to vote in a poll, letting us know if they were still on unlimited data or part of a tier. Since then, the industry has continued to change, with the introduction of shared data pools and unlimited plans that offer up a limit on fast data before throttling you.

We know that many of you are doing whatever you can to hang onto those old, grandfathered unlimited data plans while others have had to jump ship, whether it be to upgrade or because they found what they considered to be a good enough deal. So some have let tiers take over, others have at least gone the unlimited-plus-throttling route. What we want to know today, is where you fall? Are you still hanging on to full unlimited or have you had to switch it up?

Feel free to let us know what your current plan looks like in the comments.
