Chrome Beta Update Introduces Material Design Styling

chrome beta logo

Chrome Beta on Android just received an update that introduces a new icon and Material Design styling. If you aren’t seeing the update through Google Play, feel free to grab the .apk file from below and sideload it.

The update jumps Chrome Beta up to build 37.0.2062.39.

Outside of the Material Design makeover, the update also introduces a simplified sign-in that keeps you signed into Google services on the web. This also works for multiple accounts, which is awesome, and can be seen in the screenshots below.

Not sure if it specific to me, but I now find that the Lastpass in app auto fill feature no longer works in Chome Beta. I know its a beta etc but just a small annoyance I found. You get redirected to a page attached.

  • tylerc23

I’m not seeing much Material Design :( but it does feel faster

  • Noel

Do not like the new software keys….hope we will have the option of keeping the old keys. The new keys do not look Android at all.

  • Jim L

Anyone else notice that there is no more page count up in the top right box? Big fail.

  • bethcwhitehorn

Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job I’ve had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this – 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail

How do you get the scrolling search animation?

  • Rahul Shah

Question: Why to install Chrome BETA when Chrome is already there ?

    • miri

Chrome Beta is one full version number ahead so it gets new features first and is generally a lot faster. Can get kind of buggy at times (it is a beta), but that’s rarely an issue.

      • Rahul Shah

        Thanks for the insight.

  • Paul Hansen

It does seem to be rendering more cleanly. Less herkey jerky

  • Trysta

Haven’t a lot of these changes been in the beta for a while? Like the cool search animation.

    • miri

      No.

  • d

Idk if this is a glitch or what but I can’t access some mobile sites.
Like if I type m.youtube.com it will bring me to the full site. And no I don’t have the option for desktop viewing checked off.
    Anyone help?!

  • Kree Terry

So how will the tabs button in chrome be affected after the l release? Since all chrome tabs are in recents will the tab button go away or will it remain for easy access to all open tabs since in the recents view tabs can get lost in the list.

    • JSo

As of right now, it’s still one tab on the Android L preview.

  • https://www.heartbleedbug.com/ Intellectua1

Oh yea, I’m excited. One thing I did notice is the blacks on your screen shots are deeper than the blacks displayed on my G3 in incognito mode.

  • Kyle

when I open a new tab I just have the little thumbnails of most recent sites visited, and no Google logo and search bar?

    • JSo

Hit the back button, I think

      • Kyle

yeah never mind, I closed the tabs and closed it from the recent apps list and reopened it and it refreshed itself with both the Google logo and the smooth L style scroll effects. wicked sweet

  • Samvelavich

Don’t know if its supposed to be like this, but the new update got rid of the Tab counter in that little box. :(

  • possomcrast1

Everything is a lot more smooth and snappy. Needless to say, I’m impressed- especially since I’m still running 4.4 and I imagine it will be even faster when I get Android L.

Installed the apk, went to the tab view, accidentally did the card flip easter egg and got excited that I discovered something new!

Turns out this easter egg has been in Chrome awhile…

    Disappointment.

    • Suicide_Note

      Card flip Easter egg?

      • http://www.twitter.com/cltnwd Colton

open a tab, go the tab view, then swipe up rapidly and the card will do a flip!

        • Suicide_Note

Ah, okay. Thank you, sir. I wasn’t aware of that one.

    • PoisonApple31

After you get the tab to flip and see the chrome logo on the back of the tab, then touch the tab, did it always flip back in the opposite direction like that, or is that animation relatively new?

      • http://www.twitter.com/cltnwd Colton

        Mine doesn’t flip back after??

        • kunit

It will only flip back if you tap the recent tabs (the square) while the tab is still in motion it seems.

  • http://www.twitter.com/cltnwd Colton

Stop/Refresh button is gone from address bar :(

    • miri

Drag down from the menu button to get any action in one gesture.

      • http://www.twitter.com/cltnwd Colton

GS4 here, physical menu button unfortunately

        • miri

Drag up from the menu button then. Should still work.

        • JSo

I don’t know what the dragging gesture he’s talking about is. Do you have the three dots next to the search bar? Hit that and the x is in that menu. If its your physical button that brings up the menu then it’s there.

        • DanSan

yea no idea what they’re talking about. using it on a GS4 as well and just completely confused.

there arent any dots anywhere on my screen. just the search bar and the button to show the tabs.

          • JSo

Its the menu that you use to get into the app settings. If you have hardware keys then its probably long press on one of those or something.

          • DanSan

Yea that was the only place I was seeing it. not a huge deal, first time trying out chrome beta and i really like it.

      • PoisonApple31

Thank you. So used to Samsung that I didn’t even know that was an option!

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Wait it is…wtf? Why would they remove that?

      • JSo

It’s in the three dot menu. But yeah, they removed it from inside the search bar

        • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

It is, but that’s an extra press and drag away. :P

          • archercc

            Cant you swipe there?

          • Justin W

            |press and drag
It’s still additional work over what it was previously. You can press and hold the three dot menu and swipe down to the refresh/stop line, but still more than it was.

    • Trysta

Thanks for the tip. Will not be updating in that case. I prefer the beta version of chrome and having the stop/refresh button easily accessible is required for a good mobile browser. Sometimes I wonder if Google ever shows these updates to anyone outside of their inner circle. They should have atleast one person completely external to the team look at these designs before they are made public to catch dumb things like this.

    • Dave Molina

it’s in the menu now next to the star for bookmarks

      • http://www.twitter.com/cltnwd Colton

I know i just liked it where it was faster to use

  • JSo

Well I guess it’s time to go beta

    • Suicide_Note

Once you go beta, you never go back.

  • MaterialWorld

Maybe I’m drunk but it feels faster..

    • Danny

It feels super quick here as well

    • Bryan Mills

      It’s 5 o’clock somewhere

      • MistaButters

Actually it won’t be 5 o’clock somewhere for another half an hour.

        • Bryan Mills

          Party pooper over here

          • Paul

A better phrasing might be: “It’s after 5 o’clock somewhere.”

    • JBartcaps

I’m sober and it feels faster

      • Bryan Mills

        It’s always been faster

    • http://www.twitter.com/cltnwd Colton

Maybe I’m faster, but it feels drunk

The animations make it feel faster. If you turn it off its around the same speed. Still cool though

  • Will P

No refresh button in the address bar? Has the beta always been like this?

    • Justin W

      No, it’s new with this.

    • Dave Molina

it’s in the menu now next to the star for bookmarks.

  • rodney11ride

    installed

  • Andrew Olker

Just installed it. This looks wicked awesome. ALL PRAISE DUARTE!

  • ArrTooDeeToo

I don’t care how slick it looks, I won’t budge from the OG stock browser just to have the quick control pie.

    • Shane Redman

      wow…i forgot all about that

    • https://www.heartbleedbug.com/ Intellectua1

Disable it as soon as I get my phones. Chrome or Die!!!

    • LSH99

Without question, my absolute favorite feature in all of Android. SO upset that it’s gone. It’s absence is especially glaring with the move to bigger screens. Anybody know if it is possible to get it anywhere (on JB and/or KitKat) without rooting?

    • grumpyfuzz

Maybe google will update the aosp browser to have material design when source drops for L. Exrtemely doubtful though lol

  • Bryan Mills

    Thanks for the apk, breh

  • Alex Coldstone Simon

i think the screen is different when you open a new tab. used to be just some recommended sites and recently visited. now its a google search box with a logo. if you scroll up then you get what it used to show.

    • JBartcaps

It’s still recommended sites for me

      • chris

yea me too, what gives? i want that cool animation…

    • JSo

Yeah, mines showing the google logo and search box centered on the screen with the recent sites below. Looks A LOT cleaner.

    • http://www.twitter.com/cltnwd Colton

Mine was like that on the latest normal Chrome (non-beta). Now I sideloaded the beta and it’s back to recommended sites. Hmm.

  • Shane Redman

DIG, MAN DIG! FOR THE LOVE OF ANDROID AND CHROME, DIG!!!
