Gmail Update to Version 4.9 Brings Streamlined Google Drive Attachment Feature

InsertFromDriveAndroid

A new update to Gmail brings a streamlined Google Drive file attachment feature, which should make sharing files from your account to another person a few seconds faster.

Before, users would hit “attach file” through an email draft, then select to share a file from Google Drive. Then, they would browse their Drive folders to find the file which they wanted to share. Now, users can select “Insert from Drive,” from the email draft,  completely skipping the part of attaching a file from within Drive. Convenient.

In addition, the Gmail team announced that the autocomplete feature when inserting contacts should be faster and more accurate when composing a message.

To utilize this new feature, download the update from Google Play or sideload the updated apk file from the download link below.

Completely useless if it still inserts a link and makes the recipient dl from drive. Otherwise, as usual, Goog slow rolls a vital feature. #perpetualBeta

    • Ugh

Just tested it out and it’s still a link that loads an albeit better formatted page, but still locked in Goog’s server… #pitiful

How is the file attached? As a Google Doc/Sheet format, PDF, can the user choose, etc.?

    • James

forget it. from the GIF it looks like it attaches as a google doc. i guess that makes sense from google’s perspective, but it’s not much use in many work environments.

      • T4rd

That’s because they inserted a Google doc. I’m sure if you select a pdf or docx, it will attach as its native format, as the pdf above that Google doc insinuates.

        • jnt

Does it actually attach or just add a link to the file on Drive?

          • T4rd

I can only go off what that gif shows in the article since I haven’t got the update yet, but it looks like it actually attaches the document as it would from your local storage device.

          • kwickstr

Similar to its big brother (http://gmail) this feature appears to be a link…. which is a good thing from my perspective.

        • James

Again, that’s not how it worked in the past, which is why I asked.

    • Miguel

I’m pretty sure as to whatever format it is, this wouldn’t make sense otherwise.

      • James

In the past, Docs were attached as PDFs automatically. That’s why I asked.
