Motorola Updates Modality Services With Better In-vehicle Detection

motorola modality

Motorola just pushed out an update to a new app for its current line of phones called Modality Services. Modality Services should help your Motorola phone (Moto X, DROID ULTRA, MAXX, or Mini) “respond more intelligently to motion, phone orientation (e.g. face up/down) and stowed state.” In other words, Modality Services know if your phone is moving, how its lying on your desk, and if you have it in or out of your pocket.

The update specifically helps with in-vehicle detection by using ambient audio signals.

As is noted in the listing for the app, it is best to keep Modality Services up to date because it works with Active Display and Motorola Assist.

Just updated my phone today and I hate it. Is there a way to uninstall it? I can’t change my background from white in text messaging. I liked it the way it was before. All my shortcuts on my lock screen are gone too! Wtf? Made the battery worse. It also wont let me play through bluetooth anymore. Worse update. I don’t want it or the phone if I can’t have my paid features back.

Just got this update this morning. I pulled it out & surfed around a bit while using the bathroom at work just now and at some point it switched to driving mode. I wonder if it mistook other people’s flushing toilets as road noise? I did hit “I’m not driving”, so hopefully it’ll “learn” that this was incorrect. I’ve never had a problem with it properly detecting when I was driving before this update (probably due to the Bluetooth connection in my car), so I hope this isn’t a step backwards.

Its been great so far. Only once I jumped out of the car to have it voice blast a text msg as I walked up to the receptionist. Otherwise, really accurate.

    • TheDrunkenClam

Wait it will read texts to you while driving? How do I set this up?

      • 4n1m4L

Open assist. Go to the driving tab. Talk to me. it will even let you select from a pre determined reply, a voice reply, and no reply.

    I Love motorola

I’m hoping this improves voice detection while driving. I’ve found that Assist won’t pick up my voice at all if I have a window open.

Gah. Incompatible with my non-kit kat Droid Maxx. Someone get me wifi tether.

  • Prateek Biswas

Does the Location need to be put on High Accuracy for this or Battery Saving is fine?

  • TBolt

please Moto … i need an update to Moto Assist that prevents the phone from thinking I’ve said “OK Google Now” when I’ve said nothing close to it. i’ve noticed this happens in the car a lot.

    • Bill H.

Do you think it would help to retrain the phone?

      • TBolt

I have … a few times. No better, I’m afraid.

    • Tom Z

I found the answer is to re-train the phone. Make sure you say “OK Google Now” exactly the same every time; pitch, cadence, etc. This fixed my false triggers.

      • TBolt

I will try again. Odd that the on-screen instructions mention recording the phrase “in a different way.”

        Thanks all.

Off-Topic.. has anyone else’s Moto X had issues with Bluetooth after the 4.4.2 update? I’ve got the Verizon variant, and it no longer wants to do A2Dp and sometimes won’t connect/sync up with other BT devices at all. I have a BT4.0 adaptor on my desktop computer that I used to stream music through with the phone to my Bose speakers. It won’t work anymore, works flawlessly with my Nexus 7, my Note II, even the iPhone 4 that I have laying around, but refuses to work with my Moto X. I was in my grandparents vehicle the other day as well, they have a 2013 Kia Optima Hybrid with Bluetooth, and it supports the A2DP protocol, phone connect and alas it won’t work. It worked before when I tried it after they first got the car.

    • tu3218

A2DP works great on my Moto X with my car, and my bose bluetooth speaker. Running 4.4.2 stock on Verizon.

    • 4n1m4L

a2dp works fine, but bluetooth message access (MAP) quit working with my lincoln. Waiting for i/o and hopefully a new android release with a fix baked in.

If you are having trouble with bluetooth connections try uninstalling the updates dealing with MODALITY. or disable AUDIO EFFECTS in settings->apps->audio effects and reboot. This solved my bluetooth issues that were never present until the update. good luck and if it works respond here letting others know if it did or did not help..

Great job Motorola my Droid MAXX is the best phone I’ve ever had. Thanks for your support.

  • Walter Partlo

My moto X always thinks that I am driving while I am biking. While that is flattering Motorola, it is not correct.

    • RoadsterHD1

pull down the notification bar and click “I’m Not Driving”

    • WAldenIV

I would think that a good thing. It will prompt you to hear your texts.

      • Walter Partlo

I usually keep a mic’ed earbud in one ear, and just use google now to hear and answer texts.

    • MJ

I always had a similar issue with it always thinking I’m in meetings, occasionally driving also, but mostly meetings. I was always telling it I’m not. Then when I actually was in a meeting and set it face down on the table, it would not go into meeting mode. After a few weeks of that nonsense, I turned the feature off.

      • Daniel Maginnis

Meeting mode should be tied to your Google calendar appointments. And will only go in to meeting mode if set appointments are made as “unavailable.” That way if you have say an anniversary set in your calendar it doesn’t think you’re in a meeting all day. At least that’s what change logs state.

        • MJ

That makes sense, but I thought I read somewhere that if you set the phone face down it would go into meeting mode. At work everything is done though Outlook, so my Google calendar does not have any work related meetings in it.

          • thedonxr

You can export your work calendar to your google calendar if you feel like having everything on your cell phone…

          • Daniel Maginnis

I think the only thing face down does is stops the phone from flashing notifications on screen as if it were in your pocket.

  • tu3218

I wish it would add the ability to use Moto Assist to acknowledge driving, without the need for having GPS on. I understand why its needed, but hate leaving it on.

    • WAldenIV

If you don’t see the icon in the notification bar it isn’t actively doing anything and has no effect on battery.

      • tu3218

That is true. But I guess when the screen is off, you don’t know what could take over. But I guess it’s worth a shot to see if I experience anything abnormal.

  • http://thebeeobee.com/ thebeeobee

It’s crazy how much they support this phone after release!

    • morgan boyle

support for this type of software is part of a larger, long term plan. this wont go out of style soon.

  • Cael

    I want a camera update.

    • TheDrunkenClam

I’ve been using Google’s camera. I deactivated the Moto Camera.

  • BK

I haven’t had any problem with this on my Moto X, but I’m also not going to complain about an improvement.

  • Rashad

    Good job Motorola!
