Google Keyboard Update Brings Back the Blue Color Scheme in Theme Changer

Haters of white, Kit Kat themed keyboards, the blue is back. In an update to the official Google Keyboard, a theme switcher has been introduced that will take you from 4.4-white to Jelly Bean-blue in a matter of taps. There are also some bug fixes tossed into this update, but the big deal here is the color battle. Seriously, that’s all there is to it.

The update is rolling out now, though potentially as a staged rollout, so the .apk file can be had below.Β

To access the theme switcher, head into Google Keyboard Settings>Advanced settings>Color scheme. The quickest way to access keyboard settings is by pulling up the keyboard through a text box, long pressing on either “comma” or the voice-to-text mic, and then sliding over to the settings button.

Haters gonna Hate! Google keep on doing what your doing! I like the White

  • Colton

my complaint is that since the s4 went to 4.3 and has emoji support…i want the full emoji keyboard from google.

  • Colton

    Blue Dignity, White grid

  • jbdan

It’s so dim and dated the blue, are there really that many that prefer it? Guess so since it was added… I’m so πŸ™‚ they axed the other ics/JB blue ui elements

  • Raven65

I switched the color scheme option to blue on my Nexus 7 (2012) but the keyboard is still white. Do I have to restart the tablet or something for it to take effect?

  • Josep Reyes

is it posible to remove the emoji “smiley face” icon? I never use them and keep hitting it by accident..

  • a) youth.in.asia

They can give the keyboard the option to switch the theme but they can’t give Chrome browser users the option for edge-swipe or address bar swipe…

    • Gnex

      Or smooth scrolling lol

  • Liderc

Oh man, thank you Google. I’ve been dying to have this back truthfully. I like the blue 10x more than the white.

  • mcdonsco

Anyne know when they will bring back the freakin enter button in messaging? please?

  • NexusMan

    Good. hated the grey “white”

  • Love the blue over white!

  • Tim242

I thought I missed the blue. But, it just looks weird. Going back to white.

  • J Dub

How about changing the color of the long press characters? The numbers can hardly be seen in any light condition.

    • Jeff C

Just installed on my Moto X, it changed that back to blue too. I’m happy!

  • strikeir13

I want Google to add the long press symbols like the keyboard in the old gapps packages used to have…

  • Rodeojones000

People dislike the white of KitKat?

I kid. Nice to have options.

    • Adrynalyne

      Its a race thing.

  • Corey Foltman

    I want green back

  • Franklin Ramsey

Please tell me they fixed the issue with dont isnt and others not auto correcting properly.

    • Rodeojones000

      Don’t isn’t
      Don’t isn’t

Never had an issue with this, but just because I just tried. Both tapping the keys and using the swype feature. Auto corrected each time.

      • Franklin Ramsey

On both my tablet and my phone (as well as in reviews for the keyboard) if you type dont it used to correct to don’t automatically. Doesnt switches to Doesn’t automatically and I see they fixed isnt switching to isn’t automatically now, Dont still doesn’t switch though.

        • Rodeojones000

          Don’t doesn’t isn’t won’t wouldn’t couldn’t shouldn’t

Weird. They all work for me. Always have. I’m a bit of a grammar Nazi, so I would have noticed if the apostrophe was missing in the past. Not sure if it matters, but I’m using a G2 and I installed the Google Keyboard from the Play Store. My phone doesn’t come with it automatically.

    • JordanMcRae

Ya looks fixed. That was the worst bug ever.

  • Daniel

But will they have a system-wide theme changer to let you set the highlight color and text/icon color for other things throughout Android like the notification bar, etc?

  • D.B.Evans

Still waiting for option to show navigation arrow keys. I know not everyone wants them, so make them an optional addition. For those of us who do want navigation arrows, their absence throws this keyboard out from even being considered as an option.

  • Andy Stetson

It would be extremely pleasing if all google apps had theming built into them. or better yet, goog builds i the theme chooser!

  • Chris

YESSSS. I purposely have not updated the Keyboard since they added the White! Now I can finally get new updates and my precious blue! So happy lol πŸ˜€

    • Elena Rico

      Same here xD

  • conrad owens

I hope this is the 1st step in giving us global theme settings ! I want the blue back everywhere πŸ˜€

  • Godzilla

    Swiftkey, that is all.

    • jboogie1289

      ^^^ This ^^^

    • Chris

I switched from SwiftKey to the Google Keyboard lol

    • Tim242

Swiftkey just doesn’t do it for me.

      • Godzilla

        But guys do?

        • Tim242

          Oh yeah!

  • viewthis66

i would find it extremely pleasing if all keyboard developers give the user the option to have a dedicated top row for numbers.

    • Kevin

i was just about to comment something like this… i want a comma button always showing too.

      • viewthis66

i agree… or at least the option to choose which punctuation you want at the immediate right of the space bar.

        • Kevin

i have the g2 and the layout is perfect but the accuracy is terrible.

          • viewthis66

interesting… i have the note 3 and use the samsung keyboard only because of the dedicated number row at the top (it’s ok on the accuracy). i would however like to use other keyboards like switkey but i can’t stand long pressing. i would just like the option to activate the top row or not. that way everyone one is happy.

          • Kevin

i think swiftkeys latest update allows that actually, i havent tried though.

          • viewthis66

i haven’t seen that it does that. it gives you the ability to have the keypad on the left or the right in the sub menu, but i didn’t see anything about adding a top row while in the main qwerty keyboard. i could be wrong though and if i am please let me know.

          • Kevin

instructions from another tech blog: The newest version of SwiftKey also adds an optional row of number buttons, giving you immediate access without switching to a secondary keyboard. This feature won’t show up automatically with the update, but if you want to take advantage of it head into settings by holding down the β€œ123β€³ button, then tap Theme & Layout and enable the β€œNumber Row” option.

          • viewthis66

you’re awesome. going to try this now.

          • JoshGroff

I don’t like the way they implemented it though, they left in the long press number row and put it on top. Just a minor complaint though.

          • viewthis66

ok the option reads “Number Pad on Left”. There’s no option for “Number Row”. I have version Is that the correct one?

          • Kevin

hmmmm looks like its 4.5 beta

          • viewthis66

oh i see… i believe i have the beta invite email somewhere. i’ll give it a shot once i have some time.

          • Tim242

You just download it from their blog.

          • viewthis66

hey thanks for the chat… take care.

          • Tim242

I like the Samsung keyboard on the Note 3. However, I can’t use it. It tries to auto correct in fields where it shouldn’t.

          • viewthis66

I haven’t ran into that much but I hear you. I’m constantly teaching the auto correct by pressing the arrow. Learn what I type often, get it right going forward and we’re all good.

      • Trueblue711

What’s wrong with hitting the comma button after pressing the space bar?

        • Kevin

          • Trueblue711

On Google Keyboard, after you press the spacebar, it shows the most common punctuation in the suggested word list, including commas. Since you’re probably not using the comma to end a sentence, you’re probably going to hit the space bar anyway (unlike with periods) so the comma button will always be shown when you need it. That’s why I don’t think it’s necessary to have a dedicated comma button.

          • Kevin

Mine does not appear to show punctuation, not in this comment I’m writing nor in the test sentences I tried

          • Trueblue711

Is the word suggestion list showing? If not, enable it. Some apps (perhaps your browser) hide it when opening the keyboard so try also typing a text or something.

This feature is actually one of my favorite things about Google’s keyboard.

          • Kevin

I have word suggestions, but no punctuation… Tried hangouts and here

How hard was it to take a screen shot while swirling your finger on the screen?

    • ragnarok180

I’m also they type of person that tends to wonder in what type of situation photos were taken. Like pictures where you see a close up of a lion. I realize this is a Photoshopped image but I just wanted to illustrate the point.

  • cns2007

I’m probably in the minority, but I preferred the blue theme of ICS/Jelleybean.

    • conrad owens

I miss the blue as well :/

      • Chris

    • OhYeah!

I miss the gingerbread green. Easier to read than the blue.

    • ReturnOfTheMack

The only reason I’m happy for this update is because if I’m using the google keyboard I on jellybean I want the theme to match.

    • zurginator

I don’t dislike the white, but I abhor how miss-matched things are. Some things are now white, some are still blue… there is no rhyme or reason to it.

    • j

I missed the blue.. but now I’m used to the white.. aaand, blue is kinda cheesy πŸ™‚

    • jrbmed08

I want my blue back too!

  • mfr118

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind having the punctuation back on top like the old Gingerbread days.

    • bitpimpin

You still can… Just go to the keyboard settings and then scroll down until you see “Next-word suggestions” under “other options” and uncheck it

      • mfr118

Holy crap why didn’t I realize that for the last 2 years. Wow I just went full slow adult. Thanks man!!

        • bitpimpin

Don’t sweat it… Took me months of frustration to figure that one out too πŸ˜‰

  • Adam Emshwiller

downloaded on my Moto X from the play store . πŸ™‚
