FYI: You can get a 32GB Moto X on Various Carriers Outside of AT&T and Engraving

moto x camera

Back in August, Motorola removed the ability to engrave custom Moto X devices from MotoMaker, but with the launch of the service for all four major U.S. carriers, they have re-added the feature. On top of custom engraving, you can also purchase the device in a 32GB storage on any carrier, not only 16GB. Before this morning, Moto X devices on carriers besides AT&T were stuck with 16GB models, so this is big news for Moto X buyers.

As we mentioned earlier this morning, we are still waiting for those sexy wood backs to show up. Before we buy another Moto X, we are definitely holding off for wood.

Cheers K!

So what happens to all of my personal information & docs when the battery dies and I have to ship my phone to the abyss? This questions is rhetorical; it’s why I can’t pull the trigger on this phone. It seems Moto cut too much for this sweet SOC setup. Bottom line, I need more than 32GB of storage; and if said storage is non-removable, the battery better be. And that OLED?? /bleh – Clearly Moto’s new features work with an LCD (MINI?)… Too bad – Thankfully, my Bionic keeps on truckin’.

Just got this response from Motorola support

  • pulled the trigger!

  • NeilM

I got a 32gb motox from verizon, lost my unlimited plan, but they have a “data max plan” only for those losing unlimited plans that gives me 6gb/month for $30 (instead of unlimited for $29.99). I had to go through a phone rep and its a black phone (no motomaker colors).

    • M3D1T8R

Yeah, they’ve had that scam plan for a few months now, trying to entice people to give up their unlimited. If they would offer a reasonable price for data like any other utility, like $1 per GB (which would still cost me around double the $30 I’m paying now for unlimited), I _might_ consider it, for the upgrade discounts. As is, no way.

      • NeilM

Unfortunately, it was the best deal for me. We’ve got 5 phones on our plan and switching to the family plan would have been worse since we have 2 phones w/ 4gb plans, and 2 w/ 2gb plans. Paying for a phone off contract ends up costing me more, so this was the best compromise.

    • NeilM

Looks like I got a redemption pin from Motorola for the phone, so I can build it via motomaker

Seriously want those wood backs. Don’t think I can hold out much longer given the nexus.

    • H2oman25

I’m in the same boat. I keep checking the Moto Maker site and Google News tags to try and figure out where those damn things are!

      • IONEUTUE

Ditto. All I see are purple links and my hands are hurting from refresh.

        • Chad

Same boat. Just want wood backs.

          • NexusMan

Same here. Holding out for that wood! But it’s taking too damn long!

          • triumphtriple

I knew there was a pun in this thread somewhere! It was hard to find…

  • Try THANKYOU10 for a 10% discount.

    • THANKYOU10 works on Full Price phone too for 10% off.

      • M3D1T8R

You mean from Verizon? Doesn’t work from Motorola. So doesn’t work for this. Wish I could use it for Dev. Edition!

        • No, this screenshot is from the motomaker site, not the dev edition checkout.

          • M3D1T8R

Oh, cool, it does work on Motorola site, thanks. 32GB Motomaker version off contract for $494.99. Darn it, why can’t it work on the Dev. Edition?? I would definitely jump on the Dev Edition at under $500. Now I’m not sure the extra $55 is worth an unlockable bootloader. Also prefer black or a dark colored back to the white of Dev, but not a big deal. That $495 really is tempting me now. Gonna think about it for a day or two and see if the coupon still works then!

      • Jaxon Wright

How does this not have more upvotes?

        • bd1212

Seriously. I missed out on this earlier and kicking myself for not reading deeper into the comments. My Moto X order from earlier is already being built so I can’t cancel it, so I just had to place a new order using the coupon code and will have to return my other Moto X when I receive it.

          • Unfortunately, i didn’t get to use it either, just tested it as I pretended to buy another. But since i didn’t get to use it i called in and asked them to apply it to the order. it was too late, so they gave me a $25 Google Play Credit. I had originally bought 2 phones. one 16 and one 32, so 10% for both equals $25. I was happy.

          • bd1212

I’m speaking with them now to see if I can get the code applied to my first order, but I’m not having much luck. Will update back if I get anywhere with Motorola support.

          • Forgot to also mention that i called into the VZW customer service asking them to honor the VZWDEAL promotion code. They wouldn’t no matter how much i fussed. but they did offer my at least $25 off of each phone. basically they gave me a credit on each line.

      • Chief

Thanks for that tip, just saved me $18 bucks on my wife’s birthday present!

      • THANKYOU10

Didn’t work for me, it just says “NOT APPLIED” what am I doing wrong?

        • I don’t know what to say. Try, Try again!

          • THANKYOU10

            It’s kinda weird, I don’t get the “Taxes: $39.60”, but I don’t get the discount either…

          • bd1212

It depends on where you live.

        • M3D1T8R

That’s what it said when I tried to use it on the developer edition. But it applied it on the normal motomaker version.

          • THANKYOU10

Does it work on any carrier? still couldn’t make it work…

  • jmsbwmn

This would be my ideal phone if it only had an SD card slot. ARE YOU LISTENING, MOTOROLA? 🙂 Let the Nexus devices be too cool for SD cards. The rest of us like having space for stuff.

    • M3D1T8R

Yeah. Or just give me a 64GB option, and I’d have already bought one. Here’s the small changes/upgrades I would like to see in next year’s Moto X:

      64GB+ option
      Speaker on the front
      Headphone jack on the bottom
      A bit larger battery, 2600mAh+
      Improved camera hardware (Sony sensor?)
Slightly larger screen 4.8 – 4.9″, at 1080p res, in same great device shape design

Along with the obligatory CPU/GPU upgrade, and maybe 3GB ram standard or optional, that’s it. Would buy that off contract for as much as $700.

  • jmsbwmn

    C’mon, Moto, give us wood!

  • M3D1T8R

Sorry for double posting this from the previous article on this, but the info might be helpful for people trying to choose colors. FYI, many of the different color choices have different “smoothness” feels to them. I tested them all at the att store moto x display recently, here is what I found:

    Black is most grippy

    Grippy colors:

    Royal blue

Woven white is a little bit rough.

All the other colors are smooth.

Essentially the darker shade colors generally have more grip than the
lighter ones. I like the grippy feel in hand the most, feels like it’s
not going to slip out of your hand as easily.

    • kixofmyg0t

See I found that the solid colors feel like chalk….it’s weird. I’m not a fan at all.

    • bd1212

Which black do you mean is the most grippy? Woven black or regular black?

      • M3D1T8R

Regular plain “black”. I remember being a little dissapointed that woven black is smooth feeling, becuse I like the look of it. Makes sense though if you think about it, different process.

  • Patrick

Does anyone know if there’s a way to use Edge to pay for a custom X? I’m not eligible for an upgrade now, but I got an “exclusive offer” to use Edge if I trade in my phone now, so I might as well take advantage of it since I’m still rocking the first Razr Maxx.

  • shelderman

Its only available on tmobile off contract still

  • 640k

upgrade transfers are NOT working due to moto maker being an external site. now that the X is completely external, you can’t even get the device with an upgrade transfer. does anyone know a way around this??

    • Chris

Same problem. Has anyone had success doing an in-store transfer then receiving the PIN to use online?

      • 640k

Moto actually suggested that i do this. would like for some store reps to chime in.

      • 640k

FYI to anyone paying attention, a vzw store rep can provide you a purchasing pin with an alternate upgrade. I did this last night and it worked perfectly! The only caveat was no online coupons could be used.

  • Tyson

I liked my MAXX in a lot of ways, but I decided to sell it this morning for a Moto X off-contract. I am taking a dollar hit, but for me, I love that the Moto X is going to get faster updates (already has), is customizable (got the Royal Blue back with yellow accents), and has a smaller form factor. I found that the Droid MAXX was digging into my hand and was uncomfortable to use for long periods.

  • joejoe5709

I got myself a G2 over the weekend, but paying close attention to this for my wife who might move from an iPhone.

  • Moto X Woven White already showing up as not available! http://t.co/bcF1bJeBt0

  • AndrewScottRox

Folks just want to get their mahogany on.

  • Lee Mclaurin

“Before we buy another Moto X, we are definitely holding off for wood.”
    You so nastee.

  • Ron_Swanson

People are still considering this phone? Um…..why?

    • MikeSaver

Because phones aren’t made out of spec charts.

      • Ron_Swanson

But what makes this more appealing than the G2, HTC One, Nexus 5? Just wondering, because I dont see it…..

        • Jaxon Wright

touchless control, active display, moto assist, camera shortcut (that could be replicated through tasker, though)

        • Curtis

          Me personally:

          G2 – Where dem buttons?
HTC One – no particular reason (I don’t really care for the two front facing speakers, but thats not a deal breaker)
Nexus 5 – On VZW contract for a while more

Moto X is one of the sexiest phones I have ever used and to boot I have not seen it lag since buying it at launch.

          • M3D1T8R

As a current DNA user, I’m interested how the real life battery life compares to the Moto X. I had an X for a couple days, not really long enough to fully compare to my DNA. Screen on time comparison?

Also, do you find the smaller screen size and resolution to be something you’re okay with now after some use? Or do you still miss the larger screen/res? I loved the feel of the Moto X but I have fairly large hands so I would like to see next years Moto X hopefully with just a slightly larger screen, like split the difference vs the DNA, so 4.8 or 4.9″, and maybe 1080p. If they could do that but keep it near the same physical size (reduce bezels a tiny bit more), I think that would be the sweet spot for me personally.

          • Curtis

I really loved the screen on the DNA I was nor have I since been as impressed with a screen. This should be qualified by saying I came from a GNex and the screen on that thing left something to be desired. The move from the DNA to the MotoX was for certain not as drastic and thus, not as impressive to me. The screen is fantastic on the X and I have no complaints.

The battery life has consistently given me a full day with moderate to heavy use (Web browsing for 1+ hrs, using nav for 30 mins, using camera once I am at home taking video etc. and generally texting/chatting and a few phone calls, I do play some games on it, but not heavily, feedly constantly throughout the day). Screen on time this charge was 7h. Generally it’s not that much probably avg. 3-4. But unless I do not charge it the night before I can make it through a full day easily. If I follow the previous scenario and don’t charge I can make it to lunch the next day (1.5 days).

As far as in hand comparisons go I have larger then normal hands even for a 6′ 1″ adult male. I thought the DNA was a nice size and fit comfortably in my hand. I did have some trouble pressing the lock button to shut off the screen with one hand, but I think that was more button placement than anything. It has taking some adjusting to go to the X, but switching to anything new will take you through that process so I do not count that against it. I must also say that what the phone lacks in size it makes up in screen real estate. I personally have never owned a phone with better edge to edge display coverage. When I watch a video or play a game, I have never been more impressed with a bezel to screen ratio like this one. It shouldn’t be a secret though that things will be smaller on this screen so there is that.

Good luck. My opinion, you can’t go wrong with either device. The DNA was awesome, my kids broke the screen twice and so I decided to try a different phone.

        • G2 is enormous N5 isn’t on VZ, not real interested in an HTC phone due to company instability.

          • joejoe5709

The Moto X is awesome and easily my second choice. But I just couldn’t resist a G2 for 49.99 (actually got it for free with the promo code) versus the 149.99 for a 32GB Moto X. That’s just too much money for that phone. If it were also 49.99, I would have considered it. As it was, the G2 is a far better buy. And yes, specs DO matter to me. I’m sorry to say, but I can’t guarantee future-proofing like I can with the G2.

But that depends on the person of course. I’m already extremely frustrated with LG’s software. Why can’t they have a mostly stock experience as a foundation and just add in their features like Moto does? Is that so hard? It’s sometimes really confusing and things are spread over several different menus. I haven’t quite felt the need just yet, but if LG’s Kit Kat is still a frustrating experience I’ll probably throw a ROM on there. The MotoMaker feature is really cool, but I could personally care less. I’d probably make a relatively conservative color scheme anyway. And eventually I’ll throw a case on the G2 to give it some needed flair.

And the HTC One has the cool speakers, but otherwise it’s the worst of both worlds. $149.99 for 32GB and a heavily skinned Android experience. And it’s huge.

        • MikeSaver

LOOK: The sleek design appeals to many over the industrial, Maxx, or glossy backs of a G2 of Galaxy s4

FEEL: Believe it or not, bigger isn’t always better. If the massive success of that iPhone thing has shown anyone anything, a lot of people like a phone they can use with one hand and it feels great

CUSTOM: Unbeatable here. I can make the Moto X look however I want, and now even add engravings.

FEATURES: Active display, Moto Assist, Touchless control, quick capture just a number of small features that greatly complement stock android, speaking of which..

STOCK: It runs bascially stock android, the best android experience there is. It adds few features that arguably improve the experience, but none take away from it. Can’t beat that.

SMOOTH: The x8 computing system has the software and hardware working perfectly together. Users all say this device runs smooth as hell with no jank. I’ve heard G2 users say that the jank is still there on that device, despite the crazy specs.

Battery Life: We can argue if quad core is even necesssary in a phone (Moto engineers have come out and said it straight up isn’t) but one thing that the “lower specs” on a Moto X help is with battery life on a phone with just a 2200 batt. I’ve asked on these comments about what kind of batt life people get and the results have me very impressed, with around 18-20 hours on average with decent usage.

SUPPORT: Since this is made by Google, I would HOPE they could continue to support the device past just the first year and since it is close to stock Android, I would hope that the updates would have a faster turnaround time. no guarantees there though.

PRICE: Its $99 of $150 on contract for an amazing phone, or 500 or 550 off. Not bad.

          • Curtis

No jank here. I won’t stand for jank!

        • MikeSaver

also this is what kellen said back in September about the “inferior specs”

“Is it really a mid-range phone? We know that the specs sort of lead you to believe that because the processor isn’t a Snapdragon 600 or 800 and the display isn’t 1080p, but Motorola added on additional companion cores to help the phone do things that phones running more powerful processors can’t and won’t ever be able to do. Also, is the iPhone 5s mid-range? It doesn’t even come close to 1080p, yet people still think it’s top tier. The Moto X should be a fine 2-year companion.”

        • Raven

The smaller size for me. I wouldn’t want a phone any bigger, in fact I would rather have it even a little smaller with the same specs. Why do they always gimp the specs on the “mini” versions of all of the flagship phones?

  • Liderc

Didn’t you guys say the engravings didn’t look that good?

  • MikeSaver

Droid Life said they knew the 11th date was coming according to their sources, but couldn’t announce it. I believe they also know when wood backs are coming. I suggest they start a series of riddles with allusions to michael jackson albums and the like to give us a hint as to when they will come out

    • rthvk

      KitKat reference much. 🙂

Those G+ posts were just torture

  • Pedro

Now that you can get on VZW, I wonder if you can get DroidLife engravings.

  • Iziris

    Come to the UK please!

  • hmmm

Anyone else notice that you can no longer customize with Woven White back? I swear you could do that before but it says “not available” now. I wonder if they did that so you couldn’t make a developer edition look-alike.

    • Kree Terry

They didnt want you to make a dev edition look a like so they got rid of the white back? I seriously doub that . It was there before the major roll out so my guess is they just have high demand for it.

  • Wolfgang71

I went through the process of customizing a phone for Verizon just to see how the experience went. I chose everything including engraving, colors, welcome message, and even wallpaper. When I got to the check-out, I was surprised to find that the color changed from the one I chose to another color. Just beware that there may be some glitches in the MotoMaker application. Be sure to verify that you are getting what you want before payment. Just FYI.

    • try_IE

Try using Internet Explorer. It did the same to me when I was trying it out with Chrome. I noticed I have issues with many sites running improperly quite often when I use Chrome or Firefox.

      • MikeSaver

      • JBartcaps

HAHAHAHA what Microsoft store do you work for?

      • M3D1T8R

Uh huh…Netscape works even better. (lol)

  • David Moylan

“we are definitely holding off for wood”….just sounds so dirty!

  • carluverdrm2004

I didn’t expect to engraving part…. had to scramble to decide on what to engrave! I had everything all ready…. and they threw that wrench into the mix! Haha…… went with #OkGoogleNow.

    • EC8CH

Think they’ll change it to just “Ok Google” with the kitkat update since that is what triggers voice search from the homescreens on 4.4?

      • carluverdrm2004

Hahaha. Nah. Maybe if it were a Moto X thing, but I believe that’s a Nexus 5 exclusive for now, anyways.

    • MikeSaver

I heard reports it was coming back last night. I decided to just not put anything. I’ll probably regret that but whatever

      • carluverdrm2004

I almost did that. But It was free, so what the heck.

    • Liderc

Don’t think they allow you to use names covered by copyright like Google. Not 100%, but would double check with them since you kind of disguised Google within Ok and Now.

      • MikeSaver

I tried Google and it accepted it

      • carluverdrm2004

Well, it’s far too late now. Haha. We’ll see if they let me do it when I receive my device on Friday. ;D

  • Ryan Gullett

Is the Verizon 30 deal still working? If so…its this exact moment where I am not that thrilled I am sitting with a all black 16GB moto X. Curse my greed.

    • Khary Anderson

      same situation here. I’m pissed

    • MikeCiggy

      no, no working coupon reported

  • normmcgarry

I had the Moto X for a while. The Droid Maxx is so much nicer.

    • EC8CH

Big Droid Zap fan are ya?

      I keed I keed 🙂

      • normmcgarry

3600mah battery + wireless charging make it a better phone for me. It’s all opinion though. So far I’ve been pleased with the updates being piggy-backed right behind the Moto X, which was my big concern. I don’t care about Droid Zap, but the only difference in software seems to be Blur-like icons rather than Moto X’s more stock icons. Bloatware doesn’t bother me because, well, I don’t mind just not using it.

        • EC8CH

Wireless charging is the one thing I wished the X had.

Maxx definitely has a market for people who need that battery.

        • MikeSaver

      • Nathan D

I once tried Droid Zap between my two devices. I received an entirely different picture. I didn’t know they could screw it up that badly.

    • JBartcaps

I just don’t like the design of the Maxx, which is why I chose the X

    • Kenneth cox

not a fan of the deisn or size, 5 inches is a little too big imo.
