Dude Takes HD Pictures of Nexus 5, Provides Kit Kat Details in Q&A (Updated)

We’re pretty sure that today is finally the day (PLEASE, be the day). At some point, Google should announce the Nexus 5 and tell us the dirty details on Android 4.4 “Kit Kat,” which hopefully also means we’ll either by able to buy the device or at least pre-order for a release within the next week. But as we wait for all things to become official, we have one last major leak to talk about. Thanks to a throwaway account over at reddit by the name throwawaynexus5guy, we get a set of better quality pictures of the phone, a screen showing an update to Android 4.4.1, and a Q&A session which gives us a few new details to look forward to learning more about.

As far as the pictures go, we aren’t necessarily seeing anything new in terms of hardware, however, you can see that the camera housing does indeed stick out a bit from the phone’s body. There doesn’t appear to be anything else on the phone’s back that could protect that, so it’s something we’ll all need to be careful of once the phone is in hand. Hopefully, Google and LG made that housing rock solid.

The only other thing we can really take from the pics, like I previously mentioned, is that an update may be waiting for us out of the box. The redditor who posted these images said that the 139.3MB update that can be seen downloading is an update to Android 4.4.1. He said that the update didn’t appear to introduce any radical changes, which seems odd looking at the size of the update.

Now, about that Q&A:

  • When asked if the phone would have always-on-always-listening features like the Moto X’s Touchless Control, he smiled. In other words, you may be able to talk to your Nexus 5 and perform actions just like Moto X owners do.
  • He mentioned that one of the big new features he noticed was a “complete backup solution” that could save “apps data, saved games, settings for each app, etc.”
  • He said that the phone “doesn’t feel cheap like a Samsung device,” “feels great in the hand” and is “similar to holding a G2.”
  • He thought that after updating to 4.4.1, that he was prompted with a Google Drive offer that could have been around 100GB of storage.
  • As far as the camera goes, he didn’t test it, but was told that it’s an improvement over the Nexus 4, but not on the level of the Galaxy S4 or iPhone.
  • The display is apparently “great” for the price.
  • The speakers sounded great, not “tinny” or weak.
  • He also said he was 99% certain we should see the phone unveiling today.

We could be moments away, assuming Google is ready to pull the trigger. Also, keep in mind that this is info from one guy on reddit, not a final ruling on anything.

So, any final thoughts?

Update: He’s back with screenshots!

I wonder what kernel version the Nexus 5 will officially use

Was it the dude on the couch?

  • Scott

I can’t see anything super special about 4.4 yet?

    • Godzilla

It’s not supposed to be a mind blowing release, just some “somewhat cool” new stuff

    • HYPE

White status bar icons!!! SMS is gonna be built into hangouts!! (oh wait the new app integrations will update on all other versions of Android too).

Yeah, there’s nothing all that amazing about it from what we’ve seen so far. Don’t give yourself a headache trying to figure out just what exactly everyone is obsessing about and dying for this to finally be released. I am equally confused.

People just love hype. Provides temporary meaning to otherwise meaningless lives.

      • JRomeo

White status bar updates are actually bad………… Currently the 3G/4G/H status bar that lets you know you’re connected to the internet is blue…….. whenever you aren’t connected, it’ll change to White………… so on the new kitkat O.S. how will we know the difference?

    • d-rock

Have you seen a feature list yet? I haven’t…if you have, post it. Screen shots of 4.4 mean nothing.

  • Godzilla

  • googlesheep

Imagine if Apple released a device with the camera lens sticking 2mm out of the back. We’d be cracking jokes about that for weeks. But a Nexus device does it? Just keep on being sheep and obsessing about how soon you can buy it. Oh how the Android community has fallen. 8MP CAMERA!!!! 2300MAH BATTERY!!! THE CAMERA STICKS OUT!! TAKE MY MONEY.

    • I’ve actually seen nothing but complaints about that.

    • Stroodles

Wait how much does the iPhone 5s cost without a contract? Oh right 649 – 849. Way more then this device will cost. I will take the camera that sticks out a little that I wont even notice to save hundreds of dollars and have a good open OS.

    • JRomeo

ok, notimpressed is the King of sarcasm…

    • timrcm

Kind of like how we all bashed the iPhone 4/4S for having a glass back, then called it the most amazing and beautiful thing on the planet with the Nexus 4…

I recommend spigen slim armor or i-blason transformer series

      • Jeff

The Spigen is one I’m looking at, since I want as little case as possible, but am just looking for something in case the camera sticks out too much, since I don’t want the phone laying on the camera all the time.

        • Godzilla

My spigen slim armor eliminates the camera hard on of my S4

I think it could be HTC again on Asus

      • Droidzilla

As a Nexus 4 owner, I’m very happy that the Nexus 5 was made by LG. The 4 is a quality device. That said, I’d love to see Sony get a crack at it. They’ve made some great hardware that was hampered by piss-poor software (sounds like LG pre Nexus 4).

        • ive had a LG phone before and it was crap, the hardware buttons failed, then the Nexus 4 came out which is fine but glass back was a HUGE let down. the Nexus 5 is ugly as crap to me. I agree Sony needs a shot but I would rather Moto come out. I loved my Droid R2D2.

      • Adam Truelove

Wait what? Samsung I get. They kind of suck. But LG makes quality stuff. Their software just sucks.

      • athom07

always listening *from the homescreen* – but we actually already knew that. People want to know if it will work while the phone is off and unlocked similar to the Moto X

        • Godzilla

          good point

  • Defenestratus

I’ve been slowly losing interest in the nexus 5 since I picked up the note 3 and grown accustomed to Touchwiz’s insanity. However the ability to neuter stupid S-voice for the built in goodness of On demand google now is mighty tempting.

    • decidedtochangename

That’s how I felt about the Note 2 until I got a Moto X. Feels good to be free of TW again. Though I do miss the feature that keeps the screen on when it sees your eyes (smart stay?). The rest of it I happily can live without.

  • Steve B

Kellen, there’s more images up from the same guy. More KitKat goodie. Google Experience launcher FTW!

  • Jerry Huster

It kinda all makes sense that today would have been the day all along…KitKat is a favorite trick-or-treat candy…today is Halloween…it’s sort of a “duh” moment from a marketing perspective. If they don’t announce it today, I’d really be surprised.

  • David Caccavo

this phone is honestly making me think about leaving verizon and paying a full price for data plan on another carrier. it looks/sounds absolutely incredible. if Santa Clause is real, he’d have a Nexus 5 in verizon red waiting underneath the xmas tree

    • WHY

Have absolutely no idea what people see in this device that so many are talking about switching carriers etc etc just to get it. You’d even be willing to pay more for data than you do on Verizon. Why? Please explain. The Nexus 5 has a sister phone in the G2 which is basically the same damn thing, even better in some respects. 13mp, 3000mah battery, and if you can flash a ROM then it really shouldn’t matter to you whether you like the LG skin or when an official 4.4 update comes out considering the dev community will have one out sooner.

I can just see a bunch of people leaving Verizon and dropping unlimited data just to get this thing and within a few weeks to a month realizing it absolutely wasn’t worth it.

Man, Google has done a really good job whipping people up into robots just like Apple fans. The Nexus 5 has some lacking outdated specs in some pretty obvious areas but people are acting like this phone prints money and will sexually gratify you on command. People always made fun of the iSheep for standing in line to get an iPhone with outdated specs but now it’s okay to be that way about a Nexus device. It’s a pretty weak device offering compared to other flagships currently available. Why on earth anyone would be willing to change carriers, pay more for data / lose unlimited, just to chase after this device, is beyond me.

      • Rock_Kickass

Depends on the carrier, I went to T-Mobile (good coverage in my area and I get to keep unlimited) and my bill is half that of verizon. Couple that with a phone that I won’t have to do any work or take any risks (rooting and roming) to get the latest android version, and I have a win-win scenario. Just because it doesn’t work for you doesn’t mean it won’t for anyone else.

      • Someone hates freedom…

        • cns2007

Ignore this guy. He’s signing in with different usernames just to bash anything and everything about the phone. A waste of time.

      • Droidzilla

Is Verizon so scared that they’ve taken to comment trolling? I wouldn’t doubt it as we dorky McNerds basically steer how people purchase smartphones and plans. How about simply making your network more open, Verizon? Give me T-Mobile plans, pricing, and a full Nexus experience (with devices bought on the Play store) and I’ll gladly come back. Otherwise, I’m staying gone and taking everyone I can with me.

      • Matthew Wilkinson

I dumped verizon to get the Nexus 4. Best choice I’ve made as far as phones and carriers go.

      • David Caccavo

        1) as we’ve seen with other carriers, limited data is the future. didn’t one of the other carriers recently just end unlimited data for those grandfathered in? i can’t imagine VZN sitting back and not doing the same. Granted, i will miss not having to worry about my data usage, but have never used less close to the 4GB plan i would switch to (saving me $25 a month on a plan with my wife). So yes, leaving unlimited sounds stupid now, but is more of a moot point in 6 months when everyone is kicked off.

Living in a major city, i dont think i would ever regret leaving VZN in general. i assume i wouldnt have a major drop off in service going to AT&T or even T-Mobile.

        2) Yes the G2 looks pretty nice and is more or less the same, but it is skinned and i am not one who knows how to root and load stock. i’m sure i can learn since there are great tutorials out there, but i don’t want to go through the hassle of having to re-install bc root was broken due to an update. Stock really does look nice now a days PLUS having updates from Google directly rather than 2 months later from VZN would be nice.

        3) Just because i like the way something looks it doesnt mean that i am a “robot.” i wouldnt blindly buy it without going to the store and checking it out, waiting on a few reviews. but if i could buy it for $350 AND keep my unlimited for a low level “top tier” device, why wouldnt i? and look what Motorola did with the X, which has lower level specs? its not all about the newest and best anymore if the software isnt done right.

        • David Caccavo

also, unlike Apple fans, we have can have this discussion and recognize that the competition offers some positives. i.e.: apple does do some things right, or used to at least. my ipod has basically become unusable since the ios7 update.

  • Tid Bit

The guy states: “doesn’t feel cheap like a Samsung device,”

LOL. I’ll take my S4 over that any day.

also LOL : he states “great” for the price. …nice backhanded compliment akin to “she looks beautiful, for a dog”

    • Godzilla

I love my S4 too but how can you judge the 5 without playing with it?

    • jimbob

I have an s4 and also love it, enough to upgrade my wife to one 2 days ago even with all of the other options out there right now (through the Verizon keep unlimited loophole using a feature phone line on our account). However, it really does feel kinda cheap. Its all creaky and stuff, and I am constantly am afraid I am going to break it anytime I don’t have a hard case on it.

I’d still buy it again but seriously, it feels cheap.

    • Bionicman

the weird thing is didn’t reviews say the LG G2 felt a little “plasticky” similar to Samsung devices? now all of a sudden LG phones are built better because its a nexus? hmmm

      • crazed_z06

Yea, i thought that was funny. The G2 feels cheaper than my Note 3 easily

  • JRomeo

Every Single google announcement in the month of October pales in comparison to the upcoming Nexus5 announcement…….. Google should make all those other announcements AFTER the Nexus5 unveiling…. it would help us with our anticipation craziness.

    • Defenestratus

Nobody would pay attention. They’d all be too pre-occupied playing with their new nexuses. 😛

      • JRomeo

the announcement of the Nexus5 is botched………… they should have announced it already by now because it does not benefit them to delay the announcement any further… it actually benefits them to have already announced it last week! even if only to say coming soon…

  • muddy46
  • jimbob

Cannot wait for this to launch on Veri……..oh f*ck it. Stupid, worthless, money-grubbing, customer-hating, #$&&$#&!

    • BobButtons

G2 with CM will be the closest you can get. Wish developers could rip the OS off this, tweak it and release it for the G2.

    • Don Crist

      My thoughts exactly!

    • mattybeee

I am so in need of a new phone – and VZ is just F******G ME!!!!!!!!!!

      • MikeCiggy

Don’t you wish they’d take you out to dinner first.

        • mattybeee

Or at least they can at least “tell” me they love me!

        • jimbob

          Or lube.

  • I couldn’t care less about the Nexus 5 but dammit, I WANT KITKAT!!!!! hahahaha Can’t wait to be rocking this on my GS4. 😀

    • kitkat

Yup. 4.4 itself is the only interesting thing at this point. Nothing all that amazing about this device.

      • yodatom10

as long as all 4.4 devices(at least nexus) get full backup support ill be happy

      • There’s nothing amazing about any Nexus device really. They’re not intended to be show stoppers. They’re just intended to showcase Android in stock form. The only Nexus devices that were truly top of the line at launch were the Nexus One and arguably the Nexus 10.

    • Godzilla

      my Nexus 7 is ready

    • Steve B

      Gimme them KitKats

    • MikeCiggy

I agree. The N5 is very exciting and cool but not something I’ll be buying. What I am really interested in is Kit Kat and the new look and features. My Note 2 is ready for some stock Kit Kat goodness until CM get’s a stable version out.

      • My GS4 is a Google Play Edition so thankfully I have no need for custom ROMs. haha I’m happy to wait the 2-3 weeks for KitKat to show up officially on the phone, especially because I have a 2013 Nexus 7 to hold me over until it shows up. 😀

    • jimbob

Problem is, since the Galaxy Gear now works on the GS4, VZ has no incentive to update the GS4 again. Plus, its been updated twice in the past couple weeks, so VZ probably figures they can wait a long time before needing to send out another one.

We need to hope there is some new capability built into Kit Kat that VZ thinks will allow it to make more money by updating.

      • Well thankfully my GS4 isn’t a Verizon-branded one, then. 😀

  • A.Miller

If the camera still sucks, I’m going to be so disappointed.

    • Godzilla

he said it didnt suck, just not S4 level

      • A.Miller

He also said he didn’t use it.

      • decidedtochangename

Well the camera is the only thing on my Moto X I’m not blown away by and the only real reason I’m looking at a N5.

  • Godzilla

And by the way, are any of us shocked that the always on features of the X are now not so exclusive? Exactly why I didnt buy one.

    • Steve B

Not shocked at all. It’s a shame we can’t have the active display as well. I’ll gladly take the LCD over Amoled any day though.

    • JRomeo

how are we so sure that a smiley face means the feature is included? for all we know he smiled because we were gullible enough to think the Nexus5 had the feature because it doesn’t……… or maybe he smiled because it does have that feature…….. time to start the rumor mill again……. ugh…

      • Godzilla

Because it makes perfect sense that google would want such features on as many phones as possible. Also, this has bee rumored for a while.

      • Franklin Ramsey

Or maybe he smiled because he had gas?

    • decidedtochangename

I’m sure Google gave them the features on the dl.

      • Godzilla

yes, i agree. “here test this out for us”

  • Adam Johnston

If they announce that the Moto X is getting 4.4.1 as well, I’m going to have a tough decision to make

    • JRomeo

Nexus gets it first, Moto X gets it a few months later because it has to go through the carriers review process first.

      • Adam Johnston

I hope it’s not a few months that would be very disappointing to me, and would seal the deal for the Nexus purchase. I just want timely updates.

        • JRomeo

any phone sold through the google play store (especially the Nexus) gets updates immediately when they’re released…. for all other phones, the updates get delivered to their respective companies (tmobile, verizon, sprint, at&t, etc), and those companies add bloatware or whatever it is they add (some more than others) and then after the few months have passed, you’ll finally get the update……… for example the Galaxy S4 on the play store and HTC One on the play store got their updates waaay before any one else who bought the same phone through their carrier. And furthermore the Nexus got it even before those other play store phones.

          • Adam Johnston

Oh I get that. The distinction I’m making here is that Google owns Motorola, and should in my opinion have a significantly faster update cycle than other phones. I realize the middle man here is the carrier, but I’d like to think the update time would be shortened at least a little bit with the Moto X

          • JRomeo

I generally agree with you……… except that since the carriers are selling the Moto X (not google directly or not motorola directly) therefore you still run the risk of delays……… because carriers want to add their stuff or modify things, for example, checkout http://www.droid-life.com/2013/08/01/a-look-at-verizon-bloatware-on-the-moto-x/

  • Godzilla

A full backup without root? yes plase!!!

    • Ketan Gandhi

Yes, I would love that too..! no more using helium either…

    • Butters619

As long as the lens itself sits slightly lower than it shouldn’t be a problem. One X has a giant camera nipple, but the plastic lens is slightly recessed so it doesn’t get scratched.

    • Ian Smith

been waiting for this one. i almost have zero reasons to root now….

      such convenient

  • Brian Menius

Camera lens looks like it was made for the NeoHybrid case I have waiting. Bring it!

  • Dee Lee

Quit giving us the leaks just give us the Nexus 5 already. Halloween already here so give us the KitKat and Nexus 5 for our Treat or this just another TRICKS on us again.

  • sr_erick

Any details on the type of display tech this device is using? Active display is by far my favorite Moto X feature and it would be difficult to go back to not having it if I were to purchase a Nexus 5.

    • screen

      IPS LCD

      • sr_erick

So I’m guessing that might rule out any sort of active display since the power requirements may be too great.

        • JT3

Yeah, in a way, I’m bummed about that too… but then again, you’ll actually be able to see this screen in daylight, so… it may be a fair trade. I hope it at least has the knock-knock feature of the G2.

          • decidedtochangename

People keep saying that but I haven’t had any problems in daylight with my Note 2 or Moto X. Sounds more like people just repeating what others say.

          • Weber

Really? I have a hard time seeing the screen on my Moto X in daylight.

          • TJWaterskier

I can see my amoled Moto X screen very well in direct sunlight.. on my DNA LCD this was not the case… however on my Transformer Prime LCD it’s perfect. The screen tech doesn’t matter.. the NITs matter

  • Boss As Hell

Hopefully that camera will sit flush with most cases.

  • kfath1978

for the love of god and baby jesus please release this today!!!

  • notbuying

Meh. Interested to see what 4.4 brings but the device launching along with it does nothing to interest me.

  • litobirdy

If you click on the reddit link, it has a few more pictures and the google search bar now says Say “Ok, google”

    • voiceless

Voice controls with the screen on and device awake are available on almost all devices. The new “voiceless control” like the Moto X has is mainly a big deal because the device can be locked and screen off but still listening.

Yeah that’s pretty much exactly how all of you Nexus nerds look obsessing about this mediocre device. Really starting to resemble the Apple community that we all used to make fun of for drooling over devices with mid-range specs from last year.

      • Julien Roberts

You’re right, snapdragon 800s with 2 gigs of ram were so totally last year…

      • aQuickBit

The only reason I’m upvoting you is because Bruce Wayne did. And Batman is NEVER wrong. Ever. So as much as I disliked that comment, I love and respect Batman more….so you win this time.

  • Pierito

    And so it begins…

  • stockandroidguy

This sounds like the best phone made to date. Yeah I said it

    • notimpressed

LMAO. Yeah that 8mp camera and 2300mah battery really blow the industry away. There is nothing all that interesting about this device. Except the camera lens that’ll have scuffs all over it in a month.

      • ChrisI

I agree. Outside of just the price, which ends up being just a couple hundred buck difference, I don’t see how this device beats the GPE devices. I mean, you’re already gonna pay $350+ for the N5, I just can’t see this being a better option than the flexibility and expandability of the S4. I’ve had 8mp camera since late 2010. Step your game up. You tout all these breakthrough, awesome, incredible, fantastic features of Google+ picture arena…why not make a phone with a great quality camera? The marketing makes no sense.

        • A.Miller

Is the camera on the GPE S4 just as good as the regular S4?

          • guest

            not even close

MP isnt all that matters. However, let the iSheep get woo’d by meaningless numbers

          • A.Miller

So what’s the difference? Samsung software?

          • jnt

That doesn’t make much sense, since the iPhone never touts (nor has) a lot of megapixels.

It’s very good because it has quality optics, but not quite as good as a stock S4 – Samsung’s software tweaks add some stuff, for better or worse… though I think it tends to be for better.

        • Lance Bell

megapixels don’t equate to quality of the actual camera sensor.

          • ChrisI

I’m aware of that 100%. I will let Google prove me and/or you wrong then, as well as the cacophony of sites that will do picture quality comparisons.

          • jnt

But they sure can add a lot if you have a good sensor and good software

        • Col_Angus

Don’t wanna be that guy, but the iPhone 5s has an 8MP camera and takes better photos than many phones with higher specifications. I guess my point is, megapixels arent everything.

        • d-rock

Because it’s $350. It was never supposed to be top of the line hardware. The Nexus program is so developers can get a cheap phone and be able to code in the latest platform for Android. These things sell for VERY little profit compared to what manufacturers get from the other devices.

          • ChrisI

Because all the people on here are coders and developers? Please. I’m a fanboy just like all of you, wouldn’t dream of buying an iPhone. Totally support Android’s platform. Stop acting like the people on here are using this device truly for what it’s intended for. Why would you need a SD 800 chipset to code? Spare me this “developer” excuse.

          • d-rock

It’s not an excuse. You sound like your expectation is that google gives us a godly phone at an ungodly price. I had a Nexus 4 and might get a Nexus 5 if it really impresses and some of the rumors aren’t true. Non the less, don’t expect a $600 quality for $350. If you do, then I’d like to know what you’re smoking because I want to avoid it!! I love the Nexus program but they were never intended to be world beaters and people keep complaining that they aren’t. Look at the realities of the industry if you need a reason. If you want to ignore that, then sit here and complain needlessly and wait to win the lottery because its just what’s fair.

        • Ketan Gandhi

Good, that’s 2 less people to contend with when I buy the phone…!

          • Milind Shah

we’ll have more time before it gets sold out ;P (hopefully that doesn’t happen)

        • TylerChappell

If you think that a removable battery and microSD slot are features that are worth $250+, then you sir, are a complete and total moron. You LOSE, you get NOTHING, GOOD DAY SIR.

        • npompei

You’re an idiot – Read my quote from above:

When are people going to realize MP has basically nothing to do with how good a camera is?! You all have Best Buy syndrome “Hey look here, this one has a gazillion megapixels, that must be SO much better than the one with 999,999,999MP’s. Seriously people – cameras these days need to do 3 things well – handle low light, speed and stabilization. That’s it. The software optimization is key. If it can produce a clean picture in low light along with the shutter speed and imagine stabilization you have a winner. Period. Stop with the megapixels!

        • John Garlits

Well, about $300 difference, so you could nearly buy two N5s for the price of a GPE, right? Use one as a backup, negating need for more storage and battery life? LOL, j/k. Wait, that might be kind of fun. Dual-monitor phone setup? With the right software, that’d be kinda cool.

        • A.Miller

So, what are the best cameras phones for Android?

          • Ghost

LG G2 and Sony Xperia Z1.

          • jnt

Gotta add the S4 to that list, I’ve used them all and the S4 still takes some of the best pictures I’ve got.

          • A.Miller

Thanks. I am hoping the N5 is passable. Camera and close to stock are my two biggest wants.

        • DoctorJB

But my 4.0ghz Pentium 4 is still the fastest computer ever made, right?!?

        • Flat_Stanley

Well, historically Nexus phones have had extremely poor cameras. Whether it be software optimization or not, they have a reputation to fight against.

        • jnt

I agree completely on speed and stabilization. But you’ll have to forgive me – and I know I’ll get down-voted – but I think this low-light trend has gotten a bit out of hand. All low-light photos suck – some (like the HTC One and LG G2) suck less than others, but they all suck. And I’m not sure any more if the trade-off is worth it…

The trade off is this – you have to have a larger sensor to make low-light photos better. But when you have a larger sensor, you take in more light. And when you take in more light, you have to have software adjustments to compensate in scenarios where there’s plenty of light – and that’s where the problems occur… both with a flash and without. You end up with photos that have a tendency (depending on the software) to blow out and over-expose parts of the photo – heck, even the iPhone 5S does this at times. This happens on the HTC One (the low-light “pioneer”), the Moto X / Droid lineup, the G2, and the 5S – all touted as stronger low-light photo-takers due to their sensors. The 5S handles it the best and the most consistently – but even still it blows out and over-exposes at times, more than the 5 did. And if you use a flash? The 5S does pretty good because of it’s warmer led mixture. The HTC One does ok because it’s bulb is not bright at all. But the G2 and the X/Droids take pretty crappy flash shots (the G2 much less-so than the X/Droids).

If they’ve managed to get the balance right on the Nexus 5, then that would be awesome. But I’ve literally used every top of the line device over the past year (short of the 1020 – sorry, WP lovers), and the Galaxy S4 still takes some of the best shots I’ve had – and the extra megapixels definitely help, since the software does a good job keeping things in balance. The flash shots the S4 takes are better than any other phone I’ve used – balanced, accurate, and crystal clear – and I’d take that over a “not as bad as the other phone” low-light shot any day.

Anyway, I know I sound like a Samsung troll, and I promise I’m not – I hope the N5 has somehow perfected this. The G2 is a 12mp (or is it 13, can’t remember…) camera, and it helps. No, MP’s aren’t the most important thing, but with a combination of good software, they can really add a lot to a photo. So if LG / Google haven’t perfected this on the N5, I fear that 8mp shooter will be subpar to decent, at best.

      • Richard Yarrell

Note 3 bitch slaps any Nexus 5 so easily It’s comical.

        • Philip J. Fry

        • Eddie d

This is the same troll i see on google+ lol. Hes a huge samsung dick rider 🙂

          • mark

            It’s samsuck

        • squiddy20

If you’re a spec whore, sure. But Nexus phones don’t need dual octo-core processors clocked at 3GHz with 8GB of RAM and 20 gpu cores in order to run smoothly. Unlike the Note 3, which some accounts claim still lags occasionally even with its uber-powerful spec list. Specs aren’t everything Dick Yarrell.

        • mark

          Hows the update coming along?

      • jwildman16

Lens isn’t exposed, just the housing is.

      • meijin3

        Stop it, Ron. :'(

  • T4rd

Google failed so hard launching this phone. You know it’s bad when the phone you haven’t announced yet is in the hands of several people and they’re doing Q&As on it with high res pics.

Lol @ immediate downvotes for the truth. Calm down guys, I’m not bashing the phone or something.

    • Drooblz

But yet they have barges floating around the US and no one has a clue what they’re for…

      • ToddAwesome

        Skynet is here, embrace it.

    • muddy46

NOt to mention that a teardown has already been done on this phone… http://www.fanaticfone.com/google-nexus-5-display-screen-leaks/

    • We know you aren’t bashing the phone. But you are completely disregarding the fact that Google LOVES the attention this phone is getting. They didn’t have these leaks for nothing. They don’t need to have an event today because the info is already out and people already know if they are getting it.

      • T4rd

I don’t think I subscribe to the idea that Google intended to let leaks of the phone do the advertising for them. That just sounds like a horrible strategy to me and comes off as trolling to the people who are actually interested in the phone.

  • Kevin

new device and new OS without a conference though? no one ever reported invites, did they?

    • BiggiePhat

      One word: Verge

      • Kevin

i suppose it could happen again.

      • Kevin

there’s also no Sandy this year though

  • Cliff Wynne

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again… SHUDDAP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!!

  • New_Guy

    The downloading update should say:

“This could take up to 5 minutes.

Afterwards your phone should be magic…”

  • jbdan

Maybe that housing is just some kind of protective cover/cap? Take it off and camera looks more like N72013? Today is the Day!!

And who knows about the camera, we don’t really know yet ….updates can add improvements as well.

  • Touchless control was one of the best features of the moto x, and that was the main reason I was still considering it (the other being the form factor). I’m just hoping the 32GB happens, and maybe a 64GB if they’re feeling crazy. Goodbye Nexus 4 glass back!

    • Ketan Gandhi

Yep, I hope this makes it into the N5… And i think it is pretty much confirmed that there will at least be a 32gb flavor (there was an expansys listing of both the 16gb and 32gb version)…

  • envoy510

Was hoping for a better camera, but I’ll still buy this device. And, to have a better speaker after 2 years on a GNex!

    • palomosan

Exactly, been on a Gnex for two years, can’t wait, anything will be better than my gnex camera.

      • A.Miller

I’m hoping that you are right.

I’m feeling like the GNex was just an awful device. Does everyone agree with that?

        • blackjaguar25

Sir, you are two years late to that party.

          We all know it does.

          -A GNex owner

          • A.Miller

Why was it so bad? I can’t understand because when it was released we all thought it would be great!

  • litobirdy

wtf, the camera housing is NOT FLUSH with the back of the phone? thats kind of disappoiting, you lay the phone down with no case, um what were they thinking

    • Jeff

Yeah i’m gonna call that a big fail.

    • anthony jones

That’s the zoom lens sticking out. 🙂

    • sc0rch3d

it’s just happy to see you

    • rukkus78

i’m hoping at least that the actual lens is recessed from the large metal ring around it.

    • Butters619

As long as the lens itself sits slightly lower than it shouldn’t be a problem. One X has a giant camera nipple, but the plastic lens is slightly recessed so it doesn’t get scratched.

    • Danrarbc

      Remember the Incredible?

  • yodatom10

give me that backup solution i have 400 apps and loads of drive storage its time to put it to use !!

    • jimbob

400 apps?? How do you even have time to use them all? I feel like I have a lot when I get to 50 or so. Maybe I’m just not getting the most out of my device.

      • yodatom10

lots of games. don’t necessarily use them all but i have the space. never know when i might want one

    • TheOtherJames

      Alas, poor Helium.

      • yodatom10

        and titanium backup

        • Raj Bhatt

Titanium has been worth every penny for the last 5 years though.
