Has the Verizon Unlimited Data Keeping Extravaganza Part 2 Begun? (Updated)

verizon logo note 3

About a month ago, just as Q3 was coming to a close, a handful of our readers noticed that while walking through the upgrade process with Verizon, that they were able to keep unlimited data and not have to switch over to one of Big Red’s new tiered plans. As word got out on that cold September weekend, a flood of upgrades happened since customers of Verizon had been told for over a year that if they upgraded, their precious unlimited data plan would be history. We called it the Unlimited Data Keeping Extravaganza. It was a glorious time.

But as that weekend came to a close, the question remained, “Will Verizon honor all of those upgrades and leave everyone with unlimited data?” After all, we see glitches in systems all the time – assuming this was a glitch at all – and companies tend to use that as their excuse to wipe out discounts or in this case, unlimited data plans. But that wasn’t the case the first time around, as Verizon confirmed to us that they would honor those upgrades that went down during the weekend. They called it a “software glitch,” but were clearly not all that worried about the situation, having locked people into new 2-year contracts.

Update:  They appear to have patched the “software glitch” again. Party is over, folks.

As of this morning, a number of readers are seeing a similar situation play out, us included. If you walk through the upgrade process on Verizon’s site, it certainly does appear as if you can keep unlimited data (see image below). At no point during my upgrade was I told that I would not be able to keep my $29.99 “unlimited email & web for smartphones” plan. When Verizon’s system doesn’t have this “software glitch,” users will see messages all over the place, notifying them that their plan no longer exists and that it will be going away in favor of something like a 2GB $30 plan.

unlimited data keep

So as of right now, and according to our experience and dozens of others on Twitter, it appears as if that “software glitch” is back and you can keep unlimited data with an upgrade.

With that said, who knows how Verizon will handle this. They already honored upgrades once, we do not know if they would be willing to again. If you’d like to give it a try and missed out on the last extravaganza, the opportunity is yours. Proceed with caution. Also, understand that Verizon would probably love nothing more than for you to lock into a new contract, which this will do. Can we even call this a “software glitch” at this point? Seems like a brilliant move to keep customers, if you ask me.

Oh, and don’t forget to use coupon code “VZWDEAL” on devices like the HTC One or G2.

Let us know how it goes.

  • Biyobe

Dang it!! In-store guy said they are not able to honor as the system requires them to choose the plan and it drops you down to the 2gb $30 plan…. he recommended I retry and have it delivered and active at home.. but of course; by the time i get back to the office they’ve patched it… crap!! Congrats to those who got in on it!!

    • s0uth

      aw that sucks. boo.

    • litobirdy

      even WITH your screenshot?

      • Biyobe

Yep… said it didn’t matter because the transaction isn’t “finalized” until you get into the store and pick it up (the time the card gets charged)… and since it wasn’t charged, when they set it up in the system they have to select a plan and unlimited is no longer an option

        • litobirdy

ugh man. I was on the phone with a rep for like half hour. He sounded like he wanted to help but he said Verizon hasn’t gotten an Alert about the glitch. that last time they Did recieve an alert. So they don’t have “proof” about the glitch this time. If they did have an alert, chances would increase of maybe overriding it back to Unlimited.

          • Biyobe

ya i’ll have to keep an eye on this and see if anything comes out they’ll honor.. but not sure it would still matter with an in-store pickup. online w/delivery I think they treat that as you’ve already paid for the phone and a selected plan so when you get it you’re only activating what you paid for versus picking up in store and then they do the normal setup process. i didn’t think of asking “can i just pick it up and activate at home”?

          • litobirdy

Don’t even think that even matters, even if you use same sim card.

          • Biyobe

dang… well it was an attempt… i guess i stick with the N2 for now and hope it glitches again :)

          • litobirdy

Yea guess i’ll stick with my GNex until another glitch and choose delivery but then again, if you chose delivery.. Activate, then drops to 2gb. what if verizon says soryr we can”t switch to unlimited even on old phone.. hmm?

          • litobirdy

Did you try calling verizon support while at the store and telling them you have the screenshot and that the verizon rep in store can confirm that as well and maybe that way they can override it back to unlimited for you?

          • Biyobe

No didn’t think of that option… may have to give them a buzz and see what I can do…

          • litobirdy

please keep me updated. I still haven’t canceled my order. Waiting to see other comments that have tried to go in store. But so far I only see you replying

  • RavnosCC

I upgraded, kept my data (so they said) but then got this email:

    “Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for choosing Verizon Wireless.

Your order is currently in queue to be processed. In most cases orders are processed within 3 business days. If your order is unable to be processed for any reason you will receive a more detailed e-mail. If your order is completed successfully, you will receive an e-mail confirmation that your order has been completed and shipped.”

SO I guess it could go either way, playing the waiting game…

    • laheelahee

      keep us posted

      • RavnosCC

phone should arrive tomorrow, I got a receipt in the “mail” that indicated I signed up for a 2gb plan, which I did not, and promptly fought on the customer service side, they assured me that my unlimited was still active, so I’m going to wait and see when the phone arrives tomorrow, definitely transferring my gnex SIM to the new phone though.

  • MSlab

I tried to grab a Note with no luck so I remain with my G-Nex…

    • TubbyMofo

      So say we all.

      • http://hagure-metaru.net/ Hagure

        So say we all.

  • DJyoSNOW

Every time (which is often) I’ve had to deal with VZW. I’ve explained I’m wasting your time and now your wasting my time. I don’t give a flying F personally. Since I’m sure there cancellation and call ins have gone through the roof. Serves them right for being so SHADY with there ordering system. Since they trick you and the new plans go into effect once activated.

  • http://brgulker.wordpress.com/ brgulker

Anyone have any experience with Aio? Prices and network coverage seem really good. Not totally unlimited data, but better than others.

  • Joshua Mason

No longer working for me, was working 30 min ago

  • Mitch F

Anyone had luck picking there’s up yet? Little nervous they’re going to try and switch me to 2gb.

  • Marco Mendoza

I have a Motorola X for Verizon for 300 bucks if anyone is interested brand new

  • litobirdy

DID ANYONE SUCCESFULLY PICK ONE UP AND KEEP UNLIMITED?

    • http://blog.k12.com/ Scott Holm

I’m going to my local store to pick my order this afternoon. I’ll try to remember to come back and let you know how everything went.

    • Jordan Everakes

Yes. I bought at like 930am, in store pick up, new phone with unlimited by 10am. had the guy check before i bought at the store, and logged into my verizon still has unlimited. boom. new G2

  • William_Morris

    Yep… missed it too.

  • Shawn Spring

I tried just now, and it asked me to remove the unlimited data. :(

  • Rodeojones000

Damn, from the most recent comments it looks like I missed it. I wanted to read a quick review of the G2 first before deciding between that and the Moto X.

  • Voop

No go :( seems closed, glitch fixed

  • SJ

Just checked. Would NOT let me. Said my unlimited was incompatible.

  • Danny

    Looks like it is over…

  • Ivo Shandor

bring on the N5 announcement! :^D

  • jzapletal

I just tried it and it forced me into tiered data, so this window may have closed…

    • DJyoSNOW

I think they are being SHADY: The way you order plans are never discussed, until activation. So when I called in to ask about it they gave me the run around. After three calls they said no you have to change to the new plans.

  • Aaron

Anyone else have this not working for them? It just “suggests” the new shared plans and won’t let me do anything other than it

  • litobirdy

Who can I call? I went to pick up my G2 and store said it’ll drop to 2gb plan.. I called *611 and supervisor said, sorry it was a glitch, we don’t offer unlimited

    • Ivo Shandor

this is exactly what i was afraid of. Anyone else having this problem?

      • Steven Libretti

what if you activate the phone on another line that does not have unlimited data?

        • litobirdy

Both my lines have unlimited data

          • Steven Libretti

bummer. someone further down suggested to use your existing sim card rather than the new one

  • RussyJo

When i get to the Review changes screen like the one pictured above, under “data” at the top it says unlimited, like in the picture. But in the “features” section it says “NEW Data package 2gb/$30……why does it say I have limited AND unlimited data?

  • Jim Kalista

I missed the bus… Damn Kris kross

  • http://www.nosmellnotell.com/ Oak_Aged

Did anyone else successfully go through the order process to keep unlimited but not get a confirmation e-mail? It’s been over an hour for me and still nothing.

If you cancel your request all your selections will be cleared. You will return to the null page.

  • Benjamin Mackie

Maybe we should all band together, and somehow say like ‘If verizon doesnt allow us to maintain our upgrade, we are leaving when our contract runs out’. Make a big group and make some rucus

  • connor

    worked for me

    • Chris

How long ago did you try it?

  • Benjamin Mackie

Any1 else think they just keep opening it, letting a few in, so hopefully a few will get confused and get off of their unlimited plan?

  • Vanagon

Question: I ordered a Note 3 on my wife’s plan (2GB) and plan to use it on my line (unlimited) from my GN (RIP, you sweet, sweet device). I am using the trick that Kellex posted here to try and keep unlimited data.

So, once I activate it on her line, how long should I wait before I activate it on mine? Do I activate it on her line with the SIM card they send, or just use the one in her current phone (S3)?

    Thanks!

    • Chris

What I did was went to the store and got the rep to activate it on a second line, then immediately de-activate it, re-activate the old phone, and activate the new phone on my number.

      • Vanagon

Do you think I have to go to the store for that? I really just wanted to do it from home and not have to deal with a CSR.

        • Chris

I read somewhere a while back that you can do it all at home. I’m just honestly not sure how. Maybe someone else will see your comment and can help.

    • ERIFNOMI

If you’re on a shared plan you can move upgrades between lines, even online without any interaction with Verizon staff. That’s how I did it.

But, I don’t see why you can’t just get the phone, not use the SIM card they keep sending out with new phones for some god damn reason, and slap yours in there. That’s the entire purpose of the SIM card. Verizon just wants to keep treating phones like they’re tied to the plan/phone number and not the SIM card.

      • Vanagon

Yeah, sorry about that. I meant I transferred my upgrade to her phone on our same plan.

When you did it, did you just activate it, then deactivate right away?

        • ERIFNOMI

No. What I did was sign into the main line on the account (not my line). From there I hit upgrade device. I moved an eligible upgrade from a second line to my line (3rd line in this example I guess) and continued with the upgrade process. Now that second line has the upgrade date that used to be on my line and my line is in another 2 year contract. What I’m going to do is go to the Verizon store when they tell me I can pick it up, tell them to fork it over, and slap my old SIM card in my new phone and hang around until I know everything works.

Phones don’t need to be activated in the same way they used to on Verizon. Once they have a SIM in them, they’re assigned that phone number and Verizon’s end sees that your phone is whatever the SIM is in (not that it matters).

          • Vanagon

            Gotcha. That makes sense.

          • ERIFNOMI

If you go to a Verizon store though, there’s a good chance the rep will have no idea what they’re doing and dick around for 20 minutes trying to activate it without a SIM. Though, LTE phones are standard now so maybe they’ve gotten the hang of it. My past experiences have been frustrating.

    • DanSan

I did the same thing with a dumb phone on my account when i got my S4. upgraded the dumb phone, activated the S4 on that line. made a phone call, made sure it went through and it showed her number. turned the phone off, went on the website, activated the phone on my line which had unlimited. I had to call verizon to reactivate her old dumb phone because the website wasnt working. took 5 minutes and i was done.

I used the new sim card in the box when i activated it on her phone. I reused the sim card from my gnex when I swapped it to my line

  • Tim Swann

I wish I had my twitter feed open when you first posted this. I would have been able to get what I wanted. #ScrewBigRed

  • Alex Goings

I couldn’t think fast enough… I clearly should have gotten an iPhone 5s to sell…

    • Chris

That was my plan too. But I read the article like 10 minutes too late..

    • Greg

why didnt i think of that? dope!

  • AndrewScottRox

I’d like to see if the google experience launcher rumors are true. That will play a major role in my decision to ditch Verizon and my unlimited.

  • Greg

I am too slow, deal is gone. I was hoping to be locked into unlimited data. I couldn’t deside between the G2($99), moto x($199) or Droid maxx($199). If either motorola phone was $99 it would have been an easy choice. Oh well, ill just wait for amazons penny sale and active them on my tiered lines to keep unlimited on my other lines.

    • ERIFNOMI

Not to salt your wound but the VZWDEAL code worked on the Moto X and dropped the price to $149.

      • trlovejoy

Same here. With no upgrade fee and $30 activation (or was it the other way around?) came in just under $200 and no mention of any plan change. Got order confirmation at 12:31 edt with a second confirmation at 1:00. If they jerk me around on the data plan the Moto X goes right back to them.

        • http://blog.k12.com/ Scott Holm

Same here. I’m going to pick mine up this afternoon, it totally let me slide through the upgrade process without mentioning any changes to my plan. Will you let us know how it goes when you try to pick up/activate your new phone? If they say anything about my data changing (I’ll try to confirm it with them), then they’re going to keep the phone and I won’t be paying for it.

        • Greg

I must have confused the X price with the Maxx, I had 3 different phones in my cart. know the Maxx price didnt drop after the VZWDEAL code. Still, I dont know if i could pull the trigger on the 16GB Moto X. Hopefully they honor everyones unlimited.

  • Greyhame

    This didn’t work for me.

  • WCM3

Looks to be dead now guys. :(

  • Sid Dickerson

Called my brother to tell him to pounce on this. He couldn’t talk because he was ironically at lunch with the VZW executives discussing their investment partnership. (we works on Wall St). Felt like I was doing something wrong.

    • laheelahee

      lol
      +1

  • Ivo Shandor

Forget it, it’s definitely over. Waffled between the G2 and the X for too long. In case it comes back I’m open to suggestions…..

    • Greg

I hesitated on that hard choice too. I dont know that the X is worth $199 while the g2 is only $99. I was tempted by the Droid Mini for $49 but the smaller battery and 16GB storage option detered me.

  • WillyWoo

No longer working for me, looks like they updated the system to provide a new UI for upgrades – probably a consequence of the “Unlimited Data Fiasco”

    • John

Yea just tried myself and seems like they closed the hole.

      • WillyWoo

It seems I’ve been an hour late for both of these…

  • mike dunham

I was soo close to ordering a Moto X, had it in the cart and in-store pickup but could not bring myself to order. I cannot see myself paying $50 more for the next 2 years to stay versus leaving and spending less. Oh and that it is only 16gb with no moto maker. Hurry up N5 lets see what you are all about!

    • laheelahee

well if you do leave, you could always sell your unlimited.. or give it to me :)

    • laheelahee

if you do decide to sell, can you email me?

  • 640k

    Its not working for me.

  • skaman

I went through the process at 11:43 and it was fine but I balked and didn’t buy. Tried again and it didn’t work. Its done. Its like the Sopranos, its over, let it go. Time to find a new show.

  • Rob Black

Snatched up a Moto X!!! Finally…my Droid X can rest! Haha, went from one X to another! This is the best forum!!

    (I just hope I don’t get screwed)

    • Jason Downing

damn… Still on a DX? Congrats haha

      • Rob Black

Yup! I’ve been squeezing the life out of that thing! She’s been a rock solid device though!

        • Jason Downing

that’s awesome.. .mine is still sitting on the shelf in my closet. next to my gnex now

          • Malcolm Love

My Droid X is also in my room collecting dust next to its recent buddy the Galaxy Nexus lol

          • Jason Downing

            because you are now using…?

          • Malcolm Love

            The Droid Maxx

  • Steve

Doesn’t work for me, shows that I must choose a different data plan.

  • Brooks Barnes

No luck for me….deal appears to be gone

  • jt O’Brien

Okay so my dad wants to upgrade his iPhone to a new iPhone, I know that this is funky with SIMs and whatnot so is it safe for him?

  • iceburgh

    It’s gone.

  • Jim Vitatoe

I tried it again this time and it didn’t work , didn’t work last time. Could it be that I’m on an individual plan? When I try it switches me to a 6 gig $30 plan or if I try to buy it full price in tries to switch me to share everything.

  • Gonzo

“You currently have an Unlimited Data package on one or more lines on your account. The Unlimited Data package is no longer available. To continue, please select a new Data Option for all of the lines on your plan. You will not be able to go back to your current Unlimited Data package.”

  • Eric

    AAANNNDDDD ITS GONE

  • Nicolas Fuentes

    is this still working???

I tried to run through the process and at the bottom of my list, it shows me ‘features that are incompatible’ and my unlimited data is there $30 along with unlimited RTR ??? for $0′

Maybe I’m doing the upgrade process wrong? What steps were used to get this to work? (man I wish I would have hopped on the first run through)

  • http://blog.k12.com/ Scott Holm

I just ordered a Moto X and saw no indication along the way that my unlimited data would disappear. Will pick it up at my local store this afternoon!

    • terry12s

Awesome!! I did the same thing and ordered the Maxx!!

  • Roger K.

I wasted my time trying to decide G2 or Note 3 — oh well. I’ll wait for the next “glitch.”

    • jimbob

Did the same but with gs4 also in the mix. couldn’t decide because its for my wife. Stupid indecision cost me
