Here is the New Google Play Logo

google play logos

Google updated the Google Play logo moments ago across the Play store, so we thought we’d share in case you didn’t notice. It’s a subtle change, but no longer says “Play” in it and is also much darker with a bigger “Google” font. Who knows if the removal of “Play” means anything or if they just want the triangle icon to mean “play,” but this is what we’re looking at.

Update:  They switched it back to the old logo at some point in the night.

Just sharing.

  • RebelwithoutaClue

    They should call it tasftaam.
The App Store Formerly Known as Android Market

  • Justtyn Hutcheson

And so we creep closer and closer to a Google event. New store logo, new Nexus all but confirmed from LG, but they are doing a great job of keeping Kit Kat under wraps for now.

i think this is just a simple marketing. they give us the “google play” and logo to get us used to it as a new brand. now that we are used to the logo. it speaks for itself and they can minimize it to just “google” and logo. plus good points by people already, it’s supposed to look like a “play” button that we’ve been using for decades.

  • Soumyajit Chakraborty

    haven’t got it yet

  • cheese

This is a symbolic ‘LOL’ from Google to Apple. It’s a reference to how little has changed from the iPhone 5 to 5S.

  • Brian_2112

The colored logo there is a stylized version of the universal play symbol (sideways triangle). Why have the word when the symbol says it all?

Personally, I’d say the marketing slogan/tagline could be “just push Play”, but Aerosmith might have a problem with that. “F***IN’ A!!!”

  • cjohn4043

How can so much innovation come from one company? Magical, and shiny.

  • justin

    Wow….weekend made

  • iNomNomAwesome

It never occurred to me until now that the triangle is supposed to be a “play” button.

  • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

The icon probably does imply or mean ‘play’, but I hope not. I have absolutely hated the fact that they call the ‘android market’ Google Play since they made the change. It is the dumbest name for an app market/app store that they could’ve used (not literally, but you get the point). Google: please, remove ‘play’ an
d just call it…call it…call it anything besides Google Play. (rant over)

  • Turb0wned

    Much better icon.

  • Trying to keep up with Apple’s innovation today.

    • Franklin Ramsey

Well this is about as game changing as apple’s announcement, so it didn’t take much.

  • Jpx

I really do hate the name for the store. ESPECIALLY when it comes to things like Google Play Music… Wtf. And I thought they couldn’t make it any worst… Boy was I wrong, when they came out with Google Play Music All Access I cringed. Great app though

    • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

Well said…well said. Google Play is the dumbest freaking name they could’ve used. I hardly even call it Google Play when speaking to others because it sounds so dumb that I’m embarrassed to call it that in front of non-Android users. You defend and operating system so vehemently, and they reward you making you call their app market such a stupid name. No bueno. (OK, rant over)

  • fritzo2162

I kind of like the old one better :

  • jak_341

    Bring back the Android Market!

  • Kane

So Firefox, Yahoo, and Google all have new logos that look exactly the same.

  • Col_Angus

Kinda like Yahoo!’s logo change. They tilted the “!” 9 degrees!!! Innovation!

  • Rolo P

  • Joe

Should have made the play icon “champagne.”

    • Eric R.

  • Omar Amer

not sure if DL has caught on that the triangle is a “Play” symbol…

  • Google Play was stupid for the Stores name, it would be fine for the Music or Video app but not the overall. Android Market just fit so well.

  • Duckie1217

Play Button guys. Some of us grew up with VCRs.

    • cheese

wait, some people are so young that they don’t know what a Play button looks like from the VCR/walkman days and prior?

    • meijin3

Even YouTube and Netflix (I think) as well as Xfinity TV, not to mention DVD and Blu-ray players use the play button icon. Everyone better know what that means 😛

    • Raven65

Yes, it’s still used on CD players, MP3 players, DVRs, every computer/tablet/phone/Xbox/PS3/etc. video player app. It’s still completely relevant, but I still think “Play” is a horrible name for the former Google Android Market.

  • Ralph Bretz

Still like the Android Market way better

    • ReturnOfTheMack

Same. I understand it was changed to reflect that the content is not just for use with an Android device but I have never really liked the new name. Even just calling it the Google Market would have been better.

    • calculatorwatch

My homescreen icon still says “Market” under it

    • EvanTheGamer

Google needs to listen to its dedicated fan base and reinstate the Android Market! Stop messin’ around Google and give us what we really want!

      • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

  • mentallo

    The schiznit

  • Godzilla

I love that this is news, somehow.

  • Aardvark99

Not nearly enough whimsy. Call Marissa Mayer.

  • LionStone

    Much better, cleaner.

  • Cory_S

Still play interesting than the iPhone 5s

  • joejoe5709

Okay. I don’t think I would have noticed, really.

  • JamesU513

I’m not seeing this anywhere (Store, music)

  • Bradley Ruiz

    Mine looks the same 😛
    Where are you seeing this?

  • Radgatt

    I like it.

  • Cody Johnson

Well, it definitely looks like a play button, so “Google |>” meaning “Google Play” makes sense to me.

    • Andy Stetson

Exactly, way better than “Play Google Play” like it was before! That bugged the crap outta me! Had my OCD redundancy senses going bonkers!

  • Donut Do

It should say App Market so then I wouldn’t have to answer to dozens of people asking me how they can add apps to their android device.

  • Camilo Martinez

I think Google would do themselves a big favor if they made the “Play” colors flat, like they are in the Play Store, rather than use those ugly gradients. It would certainly help people make the connection.

    • possomcrast1

It would also look pretty cool.

    • Jeff C

yea, i never made the connection that it was a play sign until now. although that can be blamed on me not being too swift

      • RebelwithoutaClue

Don’t be ashamed, until I read the comments on this article, I didn’t see the link either. But I usually don’t have a clue anyway.

    • jaybar

      • Camilo Martinez

I should have specified the colors, too. More like this:

        • jaybar

          that looks hideous

          • Camilo Martinez

Well, to each his own. By unifying their color choices, it would help solidify their brand. The Play Store logo jives with the wallpapers and design choices made when the 2012 Nexus 7 was released, but the store itself has since adopted different colors.

          • Higher_Ground

yeah but I see what he was going after, those are closer to the actual colors they use for apps, books, movies, + music

        • meijin3

          Lol, did you use Paint?

          • Camilo Martinez

I might as well have. I was in a hurry, so I just used the paint bucket tool in Photoshop to replace the colors on jaybar’s image. This was really just meant to illustrate the concept.

It’s also worth mentioning that I don’t actually know how to use Photoshop.

        • NemaCystX

If this is a jab at Apple, well “Played”

    • Higher_Ground

I also think it wouldn’t hurt to use sharp edges for the symbol since it’s almost always a really small image to begin with. It would make it easier for people to get the “play” connection IMO.

  • possomcrast1

This makes a lot more sense. Previously you could mistakenly read it as “Play Google Play”.

  • Justin

  • breadable

    Thank Kellen!

    • vwbeetlvr

Why do people keep calling him Kellen? Isn’t it Kellex?

      • Hayden7200

I’m pretty sure his real name is Kellen and his username is Kellex. I’m not sure where Kellex came from though. Sounds like a good question for a Droid Life Q&A Session!

  • S4Lags

Trying to keep up with Apple’s innovation today.

    • Ian

      I’d say its on par

    • EdubE24

      Love the user name!

  • BobButtons

    I like it.

  • Dave

Good. The Market never should’ve including the non-allinclusive Play branding.

  • Jonathan Paul

Is this in response to the Apple announcements?

    If so: Well played Google

  • It’ll soon be the Google Store.

  • DanielP

    • RaptorOO7

      INNOVATIVE and NOT APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • bluz

      verizons new logo “VERIZON 8===D”

      • michael arazan

need an asterisk at the end to simulate the customer’s bunghole its going to rape.

On a serious note, Play is childish, and I miss the android market

        • blackjaguar25

You’re using an OS named after candy, bro. If childish is a concern, Android isn’t for you. Google is still professional. They just like to have fun and be creative.
