Verizon Moto X Unboxing and Hands-on: Both Black and White Versions

verizon moto x

Here she is, folks, the Moto X. We’ve been hanging out with Motorola for much of the day, hearing their opinions about their new flagship, spying on custom made versions of the phone (including ones with wood backs), and itching to spend some real quality time with it. That (quality) time hasn’t exactly come just yet, but we did have a moment to sit down with the white and black versions on Verizon, unbox one of them, and snap a bunch of pictures of the other.

Throughout the rest of the day, we’ll have continued coverage, including that of MotoMaker, the customization web tool that Motorola is using to let you design your own phone (an AT&T exclusive for now).

For now though, enjoy the quick look.

    International please moto -.- Knobs….

I know the people have a problem with the price. I would too. But this isn’t the exact same mashup from last year. I’m not looking to defend this phone but as I was one of many of the ranters thinking this phone will fail (still will think so). I did lighten up alittle because all of the editors seem to really like the phone.

    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/08/performance-preview-the-moto-x-sports-a-great-gpu-respectable-cpu/

That’s the initial performance numbers for the Moto X so far. It’s using a dual core Snapdragon 600 with a quad core Adreno 320. looking at the numbers, browsing, gaming, I don’t know what people are complaining about other that maybe the price. It’s got two chips outside of the SOC that might be something people really like. They are claiming 24 hours battery life and to be honest, how many people here would give up a 1080p screen for longer battery life.

the real question is, can this software implementation be done on samsung or htc one and get the same battery life numbers. If the answer is no, then you know it has something to do with two chips. If the answer is yes, then this topic is mute and you should be buying that phone.

But most of you complaining of specs is kinda stupid.

  • run40

Hey Kellex. Did they say anything about being able to send the phone back in to change the back and accents after you’ve owned it for awhile? It could be a nice way to keep your device fresh. Obviously, with a fee.

  • J Robert Bonser

I love all these people that think they are going to be able to hold on to their unlimited data forever. I got news for ya. Aint gonna happen. One way or another, you will lose it. I used to be like that until I finally got so sick of the absolutely terrible battery life on my gnex that I upgrade and took the limited data. I have NEVER once come close to using it up.

  • Kelvin Tso

    Droid Maxx here I come!

    • LiterofCola

      There with ya

      • Steve B

        Enjoy your turd.

        • LiterofCola

          Mad? Tell me about it.

          • Steve B

Nope, just feel sorry for you.

          • LiterofCola

How funny! Cause I’m feeling sorry for you 🙁

      • Kelvin Tso

you don’t want a Large Farva?

  • iggy

man the optimization of the software better build a private island and turn the phone into a jet to fly you there for that on contract price with those sepecs. What a joke, this is what I expect form Apple not Moto/Google.

  • reynold

Technically not a customizable phone unless you’re on AT&T. Can’t believe the thing is $200 on contract. I don’t even want to see the off contract price. Well done Motorola. You’ve trololololl’ed all of us! Note 3, please don’t disappoint!

  • Justin Larmay

Looks pretty similar to the one as far as build. Any comment on which feels better? Moto x is smaller than the one isn’t it?

  • Al-Burrit0

Its seems to be that they teamed up with SOL Republic for accessories which I like so far. I actually like everything, but the price.

  • EC8CH

    @2:55

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

  • Tony Byatt

    The next Nexus it is…

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

    BEST PHONE EVER. NO SARCASM.

  • LOL I mean where do we start?… First off I love the sudden disappointment from everyone in regards to this particular phone. People were defending it to death, placed all their hopes into it, wished for that low off contract price, and we even had a poll of almost like 5,000+ who said they were getting this device. Flash forward to today, people are so upset. You knew what the specs were, you should have guessed by now that this was going to have quite the price tag on it as well. All of a sudden, nobody wants this phone. Some of you android users are hilarious. Now me on the other hand? I still plan to pick up a Moto device as my next phone. That will be all..

    • InvaderDJ

I think it is the price and timed exclusive on carriers. You’re right, every knew the specs. The problem is the specs for the price. This is a DROID Mini that costs $100 more on contract and has a white version. That’s a problem. We don’t have confirmation on the off contract price (I think at&t has their off contract pricing but I’m not even sure of that) but with $199 on contract I can’t imagine it being less than $500 off contract which is way too much.

The specs could be fine if the battery life and performance is as optimized as Motorola says it is, but that price was the critical factor and Motorola did not hit it.

      • anezarati

yeah i am fine with the specs, but there are better options (spec wise) at the same price point, on contract.

      • Yeah I’m not a fan of the whole timed exclusive crap or that fact that this seems essentially like the Droid Mini + on screen keys + $100. I’d hope that the off contract price is pretty decent as there are those who don’t mind paying in order to save their unlimited data and others who just want a new device.

What I dislike is the sudden “oh now I don’t want this phone” vibe from everyone here, even though they hyped it up (and themselves) so much that now they are just left with disappointment.

I’ll wait to see the Droid Maxx and the Moto X in person before I throw money at any phone. I personally want a Moto device again, but I know everyone has different taste in what they want

        • InvaderDJ

I’m personally going to wait to see how the MAXX turns out and how badly Verizon molests the HTC One.

I’ve resigned myself to reupping my contract, but I’m not going to settle for a phone I’m not happy with for the price of a contract.

        • aQuickBit

What blows my mind is that the Droid Mini offers wireless charging, has 28 hours usage, and has a ridiculous pixel density…for $100 less. I *almost* feel like that is a better option. I will never get it because of the capacitive buttons, but still, you can’t say it is a POS phone.

          http://www.droid-life.com/2013/08/02/comparison-moto-x-vs-droid-ultra-vs-droid-maxx-vs-droid-mini/

    • Max_Hardcore

Lol it’s Droid Life and Android Users what did you expect? I think this phone looks really nice and the Specs are pretty decent. But I have to agree with the main issue: The Price. I mean might as well just wait for the HTC One if you are on Verizon (or the Ultra series or whatever its called) and if you are on Sprint or ATT might as well get the S4 and One for nearly the same price. If this phone was $99 it would be awesome.

Not a bad first effort for the first Google inspired Moto product but if they plan on selling it for that much they might as well make sure it is inline with the top products out right now. But overall this phone looks pretty nice a good foundation for the future work between Google and Motorola.

  • nina

the phone is beautiful. the pricing and specs are terrible-

  • DanWazz

    So depressed… can’t watch.

  • BOB Dudek

WELL..(at the least) ..it better perform like a circus rat on juice.

  • Mario

And once again Verizon bends me over…

  • aDROIDfreeworld

$650 off contract for Verizon’s 32gb = pound me in the a**. I won’t give up my unlimited data for this one – gotta go, my gnex is calling me.

  • hoosiercub88

The best thing about this? nobody can bitch about the front of a white phone being black because it’s not.

  • Mvrcel Lgt

lol, this will be 395$ OFF contract in Europe….nice one motorola.

  • chris125

I’ll just buy a cheap used s4 and stick with that. No point in paying these prices.

  • Steve B

Wow, this is the nicest design I’ve seen in a smartphone. Nice job Google and Moto.

    • LiterofCola

      I lol’d

  • Spider210

    MotoX = MotoFAIL #SadFace

    • aQuickBit

Thing is though, I’m guessing it is going to have amazing developer support for it. XDA is going to be filled with a plethora of goodies for those who purchase it.

  • chris125

moto is turning into the new apple. Low specs and high price….. Motofail

  • Razma

anyone else get a huge deflated feeling when you saw the price. $199*, *=on contract

  • Zach Armstrong

    Really Disappointing

  • Jake

Verizon couldn’t resist slapping their logo on the back.

    • Dan

Every carrier has their logo on the back.

  • Google fails on price

    Gs4 it is

  • Mike Lee

    Yeah right!

    • Razma

      …my…pride…….

    • hoosiercub88

Nice try, but your grammar hurts my eyes.

    • LiterofCola

      you failed

  • Google fails on price

    Lmfao what a joke

  • ceejw

I would have seriously considered this phone if I could customize it like the AT&T version but only black and white kills it. HTC One it is.

  • emoney

i guess i’m in the minority, but the moto X is exactly what i was looking for.

    • Eddie Rodriguez

a phone with moderate specs selling for top of the line price?

      • emoney

i don’t need top of the line specs for daily use, and I prefer the design of this phone to what’s currently available at VZ.

        • Eddie Rodriguez

I agree on not needing top of the line specs. would have loved to buy 2 of these. for me and my wife. but at a competitive price. this is overpriced

          • emoney

fair enough. i would also have preferred to buy this at a much lower price, but my phone is really old and barely useful

          • LiterofCola

Wait till the 20th and pick yourself up an Ultra or Maxx, you’ll get a bigger screen

    • Al-Burrit0

I’m with you,the price is high though. I’m in no contract right now so it won’t really affect me. Might wait for a black friday sale or any other.

  • zurginator

That Moto logo (on the box) is sick.

  • Colin Huber

I have to say, this phone LOOKS very slick.

  • Spider210

200 contract? I’ll keep my DNA

  • MafiaMM

    $200 on contract? Ha….hahaha….HA! Google, you failed…

    • Jackson

      Im soooo sad

Sorry man, his nipples are long gone now.

        • BenderBendingRodriguez0101001

You obviously know your way around a bending unit. How about we go out for some beers?

      • BenderBendingRodriguez0101001

        I have no nipples dumba$$.

        • Nathaniel_Graham

OK, so then calm your shiny metal ass down.

  • Jonathan Bunch

    Beautiful phone!

  • Dcdanger

The $300.00 price hypebeast balloon just busted

    • Ugh

I’m shocked you only have 3 upvotes as of my writing. This is on par with Viva Movil or the XBone (xbox one for those of you who don’t follow game sites) in terms of awful reveals.

      You just lost 5 customers, Moto. W. T. F.

And now I have to try & convince my mom & siblings to hold off until we hear about the Note 3 or whatever the next hypey Verizon-allowable phone that will be released.

      • aQuickBit

They lost 5 customers and earned at least 500,000 more. I don’t think they care :

  • kixofmyg0t

Doesn’t feel midrange does it Kellen?

  • Phil

yes not very impressed at&t gets the customization and the 32 gig

  • jnt

I predict over the next few hours major flame wars between the lovers of this news and those that are underwhelmed. 🙂

    • LiterofCola

      In 3, 2, 1…..

    • jose

Why wait? This phone sucks. It’s too expensive and I hate every single one of you. Die in a fire

      🙂

      • jnt

        yes!!

  • JB

    Yes, a quick boot animation!

  • Anonymous

$200 for a customized mid-range phone ON contract = fail

  • Johnathan

“the customization web tool that Motorola is using to let you design your own phone (an AT&T exclusive for now).”

    >___>

  • FIXED VIDEO.

    • Phil

what is the off contract price we need info!!!!!!!

      • jose

Like $800. $900 if you want da woodz.

    • ToddAwesome

so much hype. and now, so much meh.

  • Phil

    Only at&t gets the 32gig 🙁

  • Jason Downing

    Video isn’t private anymore!

  • yellowflash94

So umm that $300 off contract yea……..what you verizon people thinking? It is built in the US off contract arond the $400-300 market was already a long shot.

  • Jeff C

$200 on contract? i like unlimited data more than a personalized phone

    • Jason B

All the while Apple iPhone 5s (not 5S; just plural) sell for $600-850 off-contract with sub-par screen resolution (640p, yay! Retina FTW; *facepalm*) and specs.

There’s something about “perceived quality” and price. If Motorola priced it low, high-end phone buyers would think it’s a cheap phone and disregard it completely. High-end phone buyers != informed, tech-savvy buyers most of the time.

Perception is everything. Happens all the time in the auto industry too.

  • Zach B.

what a giant load of meh.

  • ToddAwesome

    hypeBUSTED.

  • BigWormBigPerm

do you have to have AT&T or T-Mobile to see the video?

    • michael arazan

Verizon is charging people to watch the video = P

  • Weber

    Hallelujah

  • Eddie Rodriguez

200 on contracts lol. what a disappointment

    • Matthew DiGiacomo

      are you serious wtf

      • El_Big_CHRIS

Are YOU serious? How can this phone with specs like that compete with the one and the s4? If iwas gonna give up my unlimited data, which Im not, then I’d choose an S4 or a One over this. /rant

        • Matthew DiGiacomo

Wait what? I agree with you..

    • NeedName

Seems that Android “fans” only want ‘third world made POS’ for the lowest possible price made by children.

Very disappointed reading all the hate for this phone from “Android fans.”

It’s THE FIRST smartphone made in the USA — GET A GRIP people!

      • Eddie Rodriguez

No one said that at all. But top of the line price for a mediocre phone, on contract and with bloatware. Nope, don’t want that.

        • Alex

What everyone fails to realize is that CHEAP PHONES DON”T SELL! If a customer walks into their carrier’s store they see: iPhone 5 for $199, Galaxy S4 $199… and then — as you all would love — Moto X $0 on contract. Then people ask “why is this one so much cheaper? It must be slower, made out of cheap materials, have a worse screen, etc.
They priced the phone for both its physical components and perceived value.. While I would love a better screen and processer just as much as everyone else here, 24 hour battery life, an amazing feel in hand (highly underrated), and customization options that make it look awesome AND really feel like MY phone are worth that “premium” price.

And for those of you that want to talk about the Nexus 4, how many Nexus 4’s were sold in comparison to Galaxy S III’s and iPhone 4s’s??

          • run40

Your spot on with the price. This will be interesting from a business perspective and seeing how much this phone can gain from the general consumers.

People need to chill just because this isn’t their Jesus phone. But, it is understandable seeing that people who visit tech sites want bleeding edge.

          • Ryan

You’re probably onto something with that. $200 for the 16GB model may actually not be all that bad. I’m still waiting for news on the off-contract price since I’m not losing my unlimited data. I’m hoping it’ll be no more than $450, but until there’s a confirmation, won’t know for sure. I saw something that supposedly by accident from AT&T, one of the models off contract will be $575, not sure which. I’m already saving a bit as it is, and I’m waiting for the customization to leave out of the exclusivity bullcrap, which has got to end, especially if AT&T has a full exclusive on the 32GB model. That’ll piss me off more than anything about carriers. I mean come on, its the same damn model of phone with bigger space, why does there need to be exclusives? Its stupid..

      • ajaxman93

Made in the USA, where’s the freedom then? All we ask for is an off contract price and they don’t deliver.

      • Taylor Abrahamson

Notice how they didn’t actually say that the phone was “made in the usa” anywhere? Because it’s not. They just said “Assembled in the USA”

        • NexusMan

Because it is. They have never hidden that fact. The internals are actually sourced from several places around the world, including USA, and they are all assembled in USA.

        • n11

Is anything made from scratch in NA?

      • LiterofCola

I don’t give a flying squirrel’s turd where my phone is made as long as it’s made right.

      • RockMarz

        theyre total numb nots

    • toldyouso

Been saying it all along.. WHY would this phone cost as much off contract as a new droid on contract when it has the same specs. Bunch of fools for thinking this was going to be 300 off contract. Makes the s4 that much sweeter.

    • NexusMan

Yea…what a disappointment for it to be priced in a similar manner to other flagship phones. NOT.

  • Spider210

    Oh jesus PRICES??

    • ToddAwesome

Need to know off-contract. Most people around here it seems wanted it off-contract specifically hoping it was $399 off-contract. With $250 on I highly doubt $399 – probably more like $599

        • Tyler Durden

Being made in USA I expect a $3000 off contract price.
