Verizon Moto X Unboxing and Hands-on: Both Black and White Versions

verizon moto x

Here she is, folks, the Moto X. We’ve been hanging out with Motorola for much of the day, hearing their opinions about their new flagship, spying on custom made versions of the phone (including ones with wood backs), and itching to spend some real quality time with it. That (quality) time hasn’t exactly come just yet, but we did have a moment to sit down with the white and black versions on Verizon, unbox one of them, and snap a bunch of pictures of the other.

Throughout the rest of the day, we’ll have continued coverage, including that of MotoMaker, the customization web tool that Motorola is using to let you design your own phone (an AT&T exclusive for now).

For now though, enjoy the quick look.

I know the people have a problem with the price. I would too. But this isn’t the exact same mashup from last year. I’m not looking to defend this phone but as I was one of many of the ranters thinking this phone will fail (still will think so). I did lighten up alittle because all of the editors seem to really like the phone.

That’s the initial performance numbers for the Moto X so far. It’s using a dual core Snapdragon 600 with a quad core Adreno 320. looking at the numbers, browsing, gaming, I don’t know what people are complaining about other that maybe the price. It’s got two chips outside of the SOC that might be something people really like. They are claiming 24 hours battery life and to be honest, how many people here would give up a 1080p screen for longer battery life.

the real question is, can this software implementation be done on samsung or htc one and get the same battery life numbers. If the answer is no, then you know it has something to do with two chips. If the answer is yes, then this topic is mute and you should be buying that phone.

But most of you complaining of specs is kinda stupid.

Hey Kellex. Did they say anything about being able to send the phone back in to change the back and accents after you’ve owned it for awhile? It could be a nice way to keep your device fresh. Obviously, with a fee.

I love all these people that think they are going to be able to hold on to their unlimited data forever. I got news for ya. Aint gonna happen. One way or another, you will lose it. I used to be like that until I finally got so sick of the absolutely terrible battery life on my gnex that I upgrade and took the limited data. I have NEVER once come close to using it up.

  • Kelvin Tso

    Droid Maxx here I come!

    • LiterofCola

      There with ya

      • Steve B

        Enjoy your turd.

        • LiterofCola

          Mad? Tell me about it.

          • Steve B

Nope, just feel sorry for you.

          • LiterofCola

How funny! Cause I’m feeling sorry for you :(

      • Kelvin Tso

you don’t want a Large Farva?

  • Justin Larmay

Looks pretty similar to the one as far as build. Any comment on which feels better? Moto x is smaller than the one isn’t it?

  • reynold

Technically not a customizable phone unless you’re on AT&T. Can’t believe the thing is $200 on contract. I don’t even want to see the off contract price. Well done Motorola. You’ve trololololl’ed all of us! Note 3, please don’t disappoint!

  • iggy

man the optimization of the software better build a private island and turn the phone into a jet to fly you there for that on contract price with those sepecs. What a joke, this is what I expect form Apple not Moto/Google.

  • Al-Burrit0

Its seems to be that they teamed up with SOL Republic for accessories which I like so far. I actually like everything, but the price.

  • EC8CH

    @2:55

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

  • Tony Byatt

    The next Nexus it is…

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

    BEST PHONE EVER. NO SARCASM.

  • http://twitter.com/Mr_Esquire_K Iron_Catastrofe

LOL I mean where do we start?… First off I love the sudden disappointment from everyone in regards to this particular phone. People were defending it to death, placed all their hopes into it, wished for that low off contract price, and we even had a poll of almost like 5,000+ who said they were getting this device. Flash forward to today, people are so upset. You knew what the specs were, you should have guessed by now that this was going to have quite the price tag on it as well. All of a sudden, nobody wants this phone. Some of you android users are hilarious. Now me on the other hand? I still plan to pick up a Moto device as my next phone. That will be all..

    • InvaderDJ

I think it is the price and timed exclusive on carriers. You’re right, every knew the specs. The problem is the specs for the price. This is a DROID Mini that costs $100 more on contract and has a white version. That’s a problem. We don’t have confirmation on the off contract price (I think at&t has their off contract pricing but I’m not even sure of that) but with $199 on contract I can’t imagine it being less than $500 off contract which is way too much.

The specs could be fine if the battery life and performance is as optimized as Motorola says it is, but that price was the critical factor and Motorola did not hit it.

      • anezarati

yeah i am fine with the specs, but there are better options (spec wise) at the same price point, on contract.

      • http://twitter.com/Mr_Esquire_K Iron_Catastrofe

Yeah I’m not a fan of the whole timed exclusive crap or that fact that this seems essentially like the Droid Mini + on screen keys + $100. I’d hope that the off contract price is pretty decent as there are those who don’t mind paying in order to save their unlimited data and others who just want a new device.

What I dislike is the sudden “oh now I don’t want this phone” vibe from everyone here, even though they hyped it up (and themselves) so much that now they are just left with disappointment.

I’ll wait to see the Droid Maxx and the Moto X in person before I throw money at any phone. I personally want a Moto device again, but I know everyone has different taste in what they want

        • InvaderDJ

I’m personally going to wait to see how the MAXX turns out and how badly Verizon molests the HTC One.

I’ve resigned myself to reupping my contract, but I’m not going to settle for a phone I’m not happy with for the price of a contract.

        • aQuickBit

What blows my mind is that the Droid Mini offers wireless charging, has 28 hours usage, and has a ridiculous pixel density…for $100 less. I *almost* feel like that is a better option. I will never get it because of the capacitive buttons, but still, you can’t say it is a POS phone.

          http://www.droid-life.com/2013/08/02/comparison-moto-x-vs-droid-ultra-vs-droid-maxx-vs-droid-mini/

    • Max_Hardcore

Lol it’s Droid Life and Android Users what did you expect? I think this phone looks really nice and the Specs are pretty decent. But I have to agree with the main issue: The Price. I mean might as well just wait for the HTC One if you are on Verizon (or the Ultra series or whatever its called) and if you are on Sprint or ATT might as well get the S4 and One for nearly the same price. If this phone was $99 it would be awesome.

Not a bad first effort for the first Google inspired Moto product but if they plan on selling it for that much they might as well make sure it is inline with the top products out right now. But overall this phone looks pretty nice a good foundation for the future work between Google and Motorola.

  • nina

the phone is beautiful. the pricing and specs are terrible-

  • DanWazz

    So depressed… can’t watch.

  • BOB Dudek

WELL..(at the least) ..it better perform like a circus rat on juice.

  • Mario

And once again Verizon bends me over…

  • aDROIDfreeworld

$650 off contract for Verizon’s 32gb = pound me in the a**. I won’t give up my unlimited data for this one – gotta go, my gnex is calling me.

  • hoosiercub88

The best thing about this? nobody can bitch about the front of a white phone being black because it’s not.

  • Mvrcel Lgt

lol, this will be 395$ OFF contract in Europe….nice one motorola.

  • Spider210

    MotoX = MotoFAIL #SadFace

    • aQuickBit

Thing is though, I’m guessing it is going to have amazing developer support for it. XDA is going to be filled with a plethora of goodies for those who purchase it.

  • Steve B

Wow, this is the nicest design I’ve seen in a smartphone. Nice job Google and Moto.

    • LiterofCola

      I lol’d

  • chris125

I’ll just buy a cheap used s4 and stick with that. No point in paying these prices.

  • Razma

anyone else get a huge deflated feeling when you saw the price. $199*, *=on contract

  • chris125

moto is turning into the new apple. Low specs and high price….. Motofail

  • Jake

Verizon couldn’t resist slapping their logo on the back.

    • Dan

Every carrier has their logo on the back.

  • Zach Armstrong

    Really Disappointing

  • Google fails on price

    Lmfao what a joke

  • Google fails on price

    Gs4 it is

  • Mike Lee

    Yeah right!

    • Razma

      …my…pride…….

    • hoosiercub88

Nice try, but your grammar hurts my eyes.

    • LiterofCola

      you failed

  • emoney

i guess i’m in the minority, but the moto X is exactly what i was looking for.

    • Eddie Rodriguez

a phone with moderate specs selling for top of the line price?

      • emoney

i don’t need top of the line specs for daily use, and I prefer the design of this phone to what’s currently available at VZ.

        • Eddie Rodriguez

I agree on not needing top of the line specs. would have loved to buy 2 of these. for me and my wife. but at a competitive price. this is overpriced

          • emoney

fair enough. i would also have preferred to buy this at a much lower price, but my phone is really old and barely useful

          • LiterofCola

Wait till the 20th and pick yourself up an Ultra or Maxx, you’ll get a bigger screen

    • Al-Burrit0

I’m with you,the price is high though. I’m in no contract right now so it won’t really affect me. Might wait for a black friday sale or any other.

  • ceejw

I would have seriously considered this phone if I could customize it like the AT&T version but only black and white kills it. HTC One it is.

  • zurginator

That Moto logo (on the box) is sick.

  • Spider210

200 contract? I’ll keep my DNA
