Google Play Movies and Play Music Apps Updated to Support Chromecast

play music all access

Even though none of us own a Chromecast yet, Google has gone ahead and updated the apps for Play Music and Play Movies for compatibility. Now, once you get your fancy new dongle, you can stream your music and videos right to the big screen with the press of a single button. There is also some bug fixes listed for both apps, so even if you aren’t a dongle man, go grab it anyways.

Were you able to snag a Chromecast before they sold out?

i got two from amazon. can’t wait to get them on friday.

  • fartbubbler

    ordered and waiting (impatiently) !!

  • Detonation

Ordered from Amazon. Should be here on Saturday

  • LionStone

Is this like having a GoogleTV for $35 bucks? I don’t know how much different GoogleTV is but all of a sudden my TV comes alive connected to the content on my phone. I’m guessing that I can provide the wifi source from my phone to the Chromecast dongle? And share from the same phone…it works that way for the HTC wireless media player I have. But the Chromecast is way better because your phone can sleep and the content won’t stop and it won’t kill your battery.

    • Chippah

No this is not like having Google TV – Google Tv is worlds more robust.
you can stream all your nas content, have a real browser, on the new LG googletv units you can use voice search on the remote as it has a mic built in.

However, Google needs to Add Chromecast support TO Googletv..

  • jnt

Would someone mind answering the question as to how Chromecast needs to charge? I saw one article that said it has to be plugged in via usb which could be a problem, but the videos have showed it free-standing – so maybe it just has to charge via usb?? I know a lot of HDMI adapters have to be plugged in to be powered for other devices…

  • Mathew Colburn

So I ordered mine at 1:13 and it says august 7. It better come before that.

    • Justin W

You were given August 7th, don’t expect it to ship sooner. You’ll be setting yourself up for disappointment.

  • ShadrachCA

What I would really like is for Chromecast to allow me to use my phone as a remote for my Nexus 7 or the Chrome browser running on my laptop. I typically play music using GPMAA with my N7 or laptop plugged into my stereo and it would be nice to have control over what’s playing as I move about the house or am outside.

    • ddh819

look up music remote in the play store

      • ShadrachCA

Thanks, I’ll give it a shot. I still feel this functionality should be native when you have multiple devices connected to the same Wifi, particularly given what Google is doing with Chromecast.

  • Uncle Paul

Google confirmed to WIRED that you could run Hulu, Rdio, and HBO Go right out of the gate… AFTER they Killed off HBO Go on googletv.. This is why people get pissed..

  • Uncle Paul

So, on my nexus 10. I want to shoot a youtube video to my new LG GoogleTV.
Will there be a Chromecast app for googletv to make this happen?

If they force me to continue using the mediashare app or buy this dongle im going to be pissed. and it also reinforces the fact that google is half-assed in many of thier releases.

    • LionStone

Well since you have GoogleTV, you should have Youtube with your account that is the same as on your phone, unless I guess you just recorded it on your tablet and haven’t uploaded it yet. In which case, I’d just upload it off the tablet, then bring up Youtube on the TV and watch it. I don’t have one so I can’t test it but it seems to me it should work if that’s what you’re talking about?

    • Travillion

On the top right of my mobile Youtube app (Nexus 7 or GNex) there is an icon that when pushed sends it straight to my HDTV. Don’t recall when/why/how this feature was introduced, but you may already have your functionality built in.

  • Mched

Ordered mine about 20 minutes ago and ships by Aug 2nd

  • Eldizzly

Dang it! mine isn’t shiiping until Aug 7th

    • Jason Downing

Mine is shipping Aug 2nd… does it say the 7th on your receipt?

      • Robert Macri

        July 27th on my receipt.

  • trixnkix637

Just ordered mine. Aug 7th ship by date. God bless Google.

  • Andy Stetson

Boo, mine isn’t shipping until Aug 7 :(

    • Steve Benson

I was refreshing the page until it finally went live. The second I was able to, I ordered. Hopefully they ship without headache.

    • J Davis

Mine ships Aug 2nd really can’t wait..

    • Fozzybare

best buy is already putting them up for sale.

  • Apostrafee

Yes mine is shipping July 27th…..so it says

    • Steve Benson

      Same here.

My favorite thing about the Music update – increased size for the contextual menu buttons. No more accidentally playing a song and wiping out my entire queue when all I wanted was to add the song to the end of the queue!

  • jamdev12

In some future update do they plan to allow you to play games on our tv while using your phone or tablet as a controller?

Also I’m wondering if I can use the Chromecast as a device to mirror a display, similar to what you can do with AppleTV? Anyone?

    • Robert Macri

You can mirror Chrome from a PC. I don’t think you can mirror your phone/tablet.

  • Jason Parr

Curious, did anyone try their nexus Q on this update yet?

    • ReturnOfTheMack

Nexus Q support was removed in a previous update for both apps and I would be surprised if it was restored.

      • Jason Parr

Right. I know it was removed. Guess I had false hope that I could update the app…….doh! :-/

        • 4n1m4L

support was removed but the icons persisted. haven’t had a chance to examine the most recent ones yet.

        • ReturnOfTheMack

I would imagine a custom ROM for the Nexus Q could bring it back from the dead. CM is available but it will be interesting to see if any future releases add any similar capability.

    • Steve Benson

In case you didn’t know, Nexus Q is all but dead.

Google just needs to make it official. Consider Chromecast your official Q replacement, for much less $$$.

      • Jason Parr

Right. I ordered 2 of them. It is just the principal, that is all. Such a cool looking device with zero function. Seems kinda dumb. I can’t even sell it on eBay.

        • Steve Benson

Yikes, sorry bro. At least they look cool :)

  • Billy Buttons

Play Music really needs to let you manually update the artist images. So many of mine are wrong and it’s irritating as hell.

    • Kyle Miller

It does as far as the album covers are concerned.

      • http://hifichallenge.wordpress.com/ Steven Shreve

The artist banners are generally atrocious. The one for the Sneaker Pimps is of the girl who only sang on the first record. The one for Depeche Mode is of the band in 1981 and features Vince Clarke who was only on the first DM record. The one for Motorhead features an old pic of the band that hasn’t been accurate for probably 30 years. It’s awful.

        • Billy Buttons

The one for Hugh Laurie isn’t even of a person but of some random retro looking compilation album.

          • http://www.unappreciatedscholars.com/ Steven Shreve

Oh it’s so bad. These are really just a few examples of the asinine selections for artwork. And the “Related Artists” sections are just as laughable in many cases.

          • EC8CH

The one for Justin Bieber is actually a girl.

            oh wait….

            Nevermind.

          • J Davis

LMAO Better watch what you say about Justin, I hear Tim O. is a big fan… JK Tim

    • duke69111

I added a couple of songs the other day and every song took the same album cover, even though they’re not from the same album. It really is very annoying.

      • JD_26

ya this happens a lot to me as well. i guess it takes and avilable image in the folder where the songs are .. dunno if theres a workaround ..

  • litobirdy

How does no one know about all the android on a stick devices out there that is better than this. Its full blown android on your tv instead of a video streaming device. For $50 you can get a pretty darn good android stick device and control it with your mobile device

    • Ian

It’s not as simple as “control the android stick device with another mobile device”. Most of the time you have to invest in a wireless mouse and keyboard and the user interface is more cumbersome. Sure, its full android but using full android to emulate workflows like watching tv is not idea. This device is streamlined.

    • Josh C

This thing seems like a glorified hdmi cable for your phone/tablet/laptop. I can already do this via my wireless router on my Sammy TV. Maybe it is only advantageous for non-smart TVs?

      • Ian

You’re probably correct. My tv is dumb, therefore this $35 device saves me from having to reinvest thousands to upgrade.

        • Josh C

Yes, definitely worth the $35. Just trying to figure out if I can justify buying it lol.

          • Keith0606

don’t forget if you have netflix the three months free is supposed to work for that also… aka you don’t have to be a new neflix subscriber so in reality that’s $24 in netflix savings so you get this thing for like $11 bucks.

          • Justin W

Aaaaandd that’s partially why I’m buying it. I can use this around the house, and my “smart” TV won’t play Play Music for more than 5-10 minutes without power cycling (using too much memory locally since it has to be done through the browser), so this is the perfect device. Plus, I can use it with Netflix and YouTube, etc.

  • Seth Merritt

Call me crazy, but I love the flurry of app updates after announcements. It’s like hanukkah.

    • ReturnOfTheMack

      Christmas in July. :)

      • Jarren

        Liike Ramadan during…. well, Ramadan

        • ReturnOfTheMack

          Ramadan in July?

          • michael arazan

More like rumspringa going from old stale ways and seeing something new for the first time and exploring something you never knew of

          • JD_26

yup it changes every yr i think ..

  • Mordecaidrake

I ordered one the second I saw the price and what it was capable of. It’s almost a portable GoogleTV. I suspect GoogleTV will soon die and this will take over as it’ll work with any device that has Chrome installed.

    • Jérôme Besnard

I agree. I was waiting for a revived Nexus Q that would have Google TV. Instead I just need $35 to do on my TV what I’ve been expected to do with my phone, tablet and Chromebook. Life is good. Thank you Google.

      • Mordecaidrake

Makes me regret my Vizio GoogleTV purchase I made a few months ago.

      • Justin W

This is essentially (in my view) a “new” Nexus Q. It’s inexpensive and more usable than the OG Nexus Q also!

  • Uncle paul

Will there be a Chromecast APP for GOOGLETV?
    that is the Question.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

I’m trying to figure out why you would need it?

      • EC8CH

I kinda think this is what google tv should have been in the first place.

      • Uncle Paul

Why would i NOT need what? So I dont have to use stupid Media share to shoot video from my other Android devices to my LG Google tv…

Google is starting to really piss me off how messy they are getting with all these devices and stuff that dosent work, – or does work great, then they break it. HBO Go for instance, worked then they broke it.

  • Wes Jordan

I don’t think they are still sold out. I was able to order one without incedent.

  • Dominick White

So, that’s the reason for the update I got today
